Identity and space in the early works of Margaret Atwood: surfacing and the journals of Susanna Moodie

    No full text
Margaret Atwood identified her literary endevours with the study of (feminine) identity as early as 1961, when she published her first book of poetry, Double Persephone. Ever since identity and femininity have remained among the main concerns of her work The psychological quest for self-awareness was alternatively considered in the context of history, geography, culture, society and ecology. The quests in Atwood;s works most frequently feature feminine search for self-knowledge and are often related to geographical and social space of Canada. This essay traces the inscriptions of human thoughts in the images of the landscape in the early works of Magraret Atwood with the scope to examine how the landscape both breeds and reflects such categories as gender, identity and the sense of the self. In the novel Surfacing (1972) the quest for psychological harmony is figured as a physical journey through the wild land, while the poetry collection. The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970) features a fictive journal of a Cannadian immigrant and her search for the self in a foreign land. In the poems of this collection Atwood examines how the landscape challanges the identity of the viewer and traveller and subsequently provokes her/his psychological transformation. As they describe the landscape of the new land in which Moodie travels and quests the lines of the poems reveal the stages of her transformation and the appropriation of a new identity. The relation between the psyche and the landscape will be analysed within the framework of Sigmund Freud and Jacque Lacan's theories of psyschoanalyses and culture

    The Neomythologism of Pavel Pepperstein

    No full text
Using examples of Pavel Pepperstein's visual and literary works (the novel The Mythological Love of Castes, the short story collection Spring, and the poem "Who Saw Lenin"), this article shows the remythologization of Soviet discourse, primarily the figure of Lenin. On the other hand, attention is also paid to ancient myths that the author "decodes" and "reconstructs" in a new way

This article describes the phenomenon of the appearance of comic strips about Russian immigrants in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which formed a kind of culturological type, interesting for comic strip researchers, sociologists, culturologists and narratologists. Since it seems interesting to us to consider comics as a text united by a system of cultural markers/codes that are specific to immigration in general, and to Belgrade immigration in particular, it would help us to understand the context of everyday life that has developed not only among Russian emigrants of the First wave, but also the context of the country which accepted them. Immigration has not only occurred, but has been subject of a high degree of mythologization, which created quite specific typological models

First Person and the Other World

The paper examines 30 texts (from interwar period to recent examples) unrecognized so far in Serbian folkloristics as belonging to the same corpus and representing a distinct genre. It is first-person narrative about the experience of temporary death and vision of the other world. This genre became first introduced in Russian folkloristics under the emic term obmiranie and since the pioneer work of N. and S. Tolstoi it became the topic of intensive research, especially in last 30 years. South Slavic examples, however, were only sporadically mentioned and most of them remained virtually unknown in this sense. The scheme of the genre, as discerned by Tolstois (introduction-circumstances of death; seeing the other world, travelling; returning to life) applies to Serbian narratives too, which confirms that we deal with a specific genre. While there is a couple of emic terms, etic term we propose is eschatological memorate. Motifs in these examples show the persistence of the traditional concepts of post-mortal existence, but at the same time they overlap with concepts stemming from Orthodox chap-books. The relation between written and oral tradition is therefore taken into account too as important for the transmission and for forming the wordview of the narratives. Finally, these narratives to some extent resemble NDE narratives, as popularized by R. Moody, but there is a strong difference since folk memorates retain traditional folk Christian worldview. However, we don’t have examples of modern NDE, except for those from a couple of new age healers

It is common knowledge that loanwords constitute a significant portion of the Classical Arabic vocabulary. In this paper we examine how loanwords are represented in Teufik Muftić’s Arabic-Bosnian Dictionary (formerly Arabic-SerboCroatian Dictionary), which is known for its thorough and comprehensive listing of Arabic vocabulary. Our hypothesis was that the Dictionary can give us new insights into this layer of classical Arabic lexicon, with some specific morphological and semantic rules that govern it. In the first part of this study we described a historical framework in which language contacts took place. We have listed 100 examples from the most common donor-languages, in proportion to the extent of their impact on Arabic. During the early stages of its development, Arabic was mostly borrowing from Persian, Greek, Syriac and Latin, and less from Hebrew, Ethiopian, Sanskrit, Acadian and other languages. Each word was cross-checked in various relevant dictionaries and historical reference books, although these sources were not always consistent, when it comes to etymology. The words are then excerpted from the Arabic-Bosnian Dictionary and analyzed from different standpoints. The analysis of the Arabic part of the excerpted words has shown a high degree of adaptation at both graphophonological and morphological levels, to the extent that some loanwords are not even treated as words of foreign origin in Dictionary entries. Some loanwords that are fully-adapted became roots for further derivations, while many of them developed broken plurals in Arabic. The analysis of the Bosnian part of the Dictionary has shown a rich polysemantic structure of most loanwords, while words that did not exhibit any secondary meanings are fewer. It is also noticed that many loanwords are present in both Arabic and Bosnian part of the Dictionary, where their came via different routes. The most common thematic groups are the following: religion, science, administration, botany, agriculture, professions, clothing, artifacts, philosophy etc. We tried to define the status of loanwords in Classical Arabic and pinpoint some of their morphological and semantic peculiarities, which are presented in the Dictionary. However, many issues remained unresolved and call for more extensive analysis. For instance, subsequent studies could provide an in-depth analysis of loanwords in Modern Standard Arabic. A comparison can be drawn between loanword in Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic

Institution of waqf in the Ottoman Empire was founded on the Balkan territories just after being conquered. Built on a waqf land, in accordance with Sharia Law, waqfs enjoyed special treatment. Waqfs immovable and movable property changed its status during their existence, but in a period of the Kingdom of Serbia, legal relations between waqfs and Serbian authorities became complicated, so it lasted until the Law of Islamic Community of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was issued in 1930. We can say that the history of waqfs in the Principality of Serbia followed the destiny of Muslim population in accordance with historical and legal changes in Ottoman Empire, having in mind Hattisherif of Gulhane being proclaimed, 1839, so struggle for national liberation from Ottomans started in the Balkan Peninsula. This work includes research about history of the institution of waqf and status of it in the Principality of Serbia 1830-1878 during the period of Ottoman Empire power stagnation

Grammaticalization of the numeral 'one' in Serbian as a Balcanic Slavic language in comparison to French

This dissertation focuses on the properties of the Serbian word jedan and its similarities to the French indefinite article un, on the one hand, and to equivalent words in Balkan languages, most notably Bulgarian, on the other. The theoretical framework chosen for the examination of the similarities between the word jedan and the French indefinite article is the Grammaticalization Theory. Grammaticalization is a process by which units with grammatical meaning are, over time, derived from units with lexical meaning. In this way, the indefinite article is derived from the numeral ’one’. This process proceeds through several stages, usually represented in the form of grammaticalization scales. These scales can be viewed diachronically, as representing stages of historical development, or synchronically, as implicational scales, in which a function associated with a given point implies the presence of those associated with all lower points..
