Ageism in the discourse on the elderly during the corona virus pandemics in Serbia

    No full text
As the older citizens were presented as the most vulnerable at the start of the pandemic, they suffered the most severe measures in the fight against the virus - they were locked in their homes, initially without the possibility to go out, then with minimal walking time; they were allowed to go to supermarkets between 4 and 7 am: They were humiliated and discriminated against. Such discriminatory practices against older citizens in the dominant discourse of the President of the State are presented as protection and true love for "grandparents". The aim of this article is to see how the elderly are represented in mainstream discourse and what discriminatory practices lie behind the apparent concern and love for retirees. The objective is also to identify the linguistic means by which ageism manifests itself in discourse, to explain the discursive construction of the concept of aging, and to determine what are the main ageisms that persist in Serbian society. The ageisms found in the corpus of citizens' comments on various news reports that deal with Covid and of the President of Serbia's remarks during press conferences show that several ageisms are dominant in the discourse of Serbian society: The elderly do not respect the antiepidemic measures and are irresponsible; the elderly are the main culprits of the pandemic; the elderly are unreasonable and unable to make important decisions; the elderly do not know how to manage their own money; they are selfish and want to live forever; the elderly are privileged; the elderly have lived long enough. Ageisms are expressed in the discourse of society by various linguistic means: Insulting names, hyperboles and superlatives, attributes with negative connotations. Society discourse often emphasizes the difference between them (undisciplined and privileged) and us (disciplined). The President of the state usually uses pathos in his discourse in order to convince retirees of the state's love for them and assure them that discriminatory measures have only been taken for their own sake. Besides the pathos, the speech of the leaders of the state also includes warlike metaphors, rhetorical questions, and other linguistic means which signal the proximity and the unity with the people. The discourses of the state and the society treat the elderly as if they are completely helpless. The discourse of the elderly mainly aims to recognize implicit and widespread ageisms, as well as pathos and infantilizing discourse, and to reject the discursive image of the elderly created by society and the state. By reproducing this discriminatory discourse full of ageisms, we normalize discriminatory actions, so this discourse should be questioned and rejected, instead of being accepted as a normal discursive representation of the elderly. Society should not cultivate discriminatory discourses; we have to ask ourselves what is the social reality of certain discourses and determine whether the specific discourse is only a cover for discriminatory practices and restrictions on the rights of certain social groups

The book of poetry hysterical fans and its preface by Theodor Chakarmov

    No full text
The most famous book of poetry by the Yambol poet Teodor Draganov, Hysterical Fans, deserves to be the subject of wider scholarly interest. This article aims to show the functional and pragmatic characteristics of its preface, written by the poet Theodor Chakarmov. The functional characteristics of the preface that make it a pretext for a manifesto, as well as its interpretive functions are analyzed in the text. Attention is paid to the place this book of poetry takes in the context of both the Bulgarian and European avant-garde. The text will answer the following questions: who and what are the influences on the author of the preface and the author of the main text, what is the nature of their aesthetic thinking, what is the "appropriate" readership for the book, and what features of the preface and the volume make them suitable for analysis in an international context

The writing process of a Ph.D. proposal: Corpus analysis and an interview with the author

    No full text
This chapter is an example of a doubly innovative methodological approach to the drafts and revisions of a Ph.D. proposal. The authors used corpus analysis on five separate small-scale corpora to detect changes in approaches and attitudes toward the topic, mainly by focusing on single-word and multi-word term analysis and combining a qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were extracted by using Sketch Engine. The authors also sought to destabilize the relationship between the researcher and the author of the texts from which the corpora were derived by making the author of the texts a second author who provides an introspective analysis of the research findings. This was achieved through an unconventional interview method that drew on dialogic engagement

Telic Verbs and Bounded Situation in Chinese

Based on the results of corpus analysis, this paper examines Chinese telic and resultative verbs, and their relationships with “bounded” situations. Guided by empirical and quantitative analysis, its purpose is to shed some light on the distribution of these telic verbs in narrative discourse, as well as their possibilities and ways of expressing “boundedness” without the help of other aspect operators. The results of our research show the necessity to further classify this verb class into non-resultative and resultative telic verbs, since there are significant differences between them in syntactic and discourse behavior in expressing “boundedness”. Finally, a contrastive analysis of these verbs in the Chinese original and their translation equivalents in the Serbian language reveals the main ways in which the Serbian language renders the meanings of “boundedness” and “resultative” features of Chinese telic verbs

    The phraseological construction

The main aims of this paper are the presentation of the Spanish phraseological construction [Vmov + prep + [los cerros de Úbeda]] and the nuances of its meaning in Spanish together with the identification of its equivalents in Serbian. For the purposes of our analysis, we use the theoretical framework developed by the Construction Grammar. The data has been obtained from two relevant corpora of the contemporary Spanish language, CREA y CORPES XXI, both developed by the Spanish Royal Academy and available online. Our goal being the identification of equivalents of the Spanish phraseological construction in Serbian, first we address this key concept in the introduction. In effect, one of the main problems in Phraseology, both from a theoretical and practical point of view, is that of equivalence. Apart from Phraseology, the problem of equivalence has also been analysed from the perspective of Translation Studies. Thus many scholars in both disciplines mentioned above have proven through research that lexicographical equivalence is not the same as the (con)textual equivalence (Torrent-Lenzen, 2009, 2012; Timofeeva 2012; Mellado Blanco, 2015; Sevilla Muñoz, 2015). Moreover, Mellado Blanco (2015: 155) has found a key difference between lexicographical and textual equivalence. This difference lies in the fact that lexicographical equivalence does not pretend to reach or include all the possible translations of one particular phraseological unit from L1 to L2. Such findings lead to the inevitable conclusion that a definition of a phraseological unit offered by either a monolingual or a bilingual dictionary will not necessarily always represent an appropriate solution for one specific translation. The complexity of the phraseological meaning is the reason that lies beneath the fact that is it by no means an easy task to detect its equivalents, especially in a different language. As observed by Torrent-Lenzen (2009: 544), phrases possess the ability of adapting their meaning to context and by doing this, following Sevilla Muñoz (2015: 96), they acquire a meaning that is unique. Through analysis of the use of the Spanish phraseological construction in context, we observe that it possesses a wider range of meanings than the ones usually presented in monolingual dictionaries. More precisely, we have found that the Spanish phraseological construction [Vmov + prep + [los cerros de Úbeda]] has five meanings. Following one of the main aims of our paper, we then identify their contextual equivalents in Serbian. For the presentation of the senses in Spanish and their equivalents in Serbian, we use the lexicographical model defined by Penadés Martínez (2021). Although we use the model previously mentioned, it needs to be specified that we have adapted it for the purposes of our analysis. In analysing the Spanish phraseological construction [Vmov + prep + [los cerros de Úbeda]] we further find in the examples from the corpus representing real use that it presents modifications. On some occasions, these modifications can affect the structure of the appropriate equivalent in Serbian. In line with another key concept within the field of Phraseology, that of cognitive entrenchment, one of the conclusions of our analysis is that the modifications of the phraseological construction and its variation do not impede the communicative process and, therefore, do not stand in the way of it being understood

    Learning as intersubjectivity

    No full text
This chapter introduces key concepts that served as cornerstones in the design, implementation, and research of networked learning projects with a focus on academic writing. These projects provided a context for critical thinking, conscientious being, and the development of meta-knowledge, which are the ultimate goals of higher education. This chapter reveals the successful pursuit of these goals to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries which would require a holistic approach that engages persons academically and professionally, intra- and interpersonally, and above all reflectively. Research of the same calls for a transdisciplinary approach, and the rationale behind the adoption of reflective and dialogic methods is explored. Where personal and academic development may involve the tensions and discomfort of growth, this chapter suggests the value of mutual learning within heterarchical communities of practice and those that seek to cultivate mutual autonomy. Learning how to learn together is understood as a starting point and a final destination in this experiment of critical pedagogy that is experienced differently by each participant but commonly shared by all

The Odyssey of Pedagogies of Technoscientific Literacies

    No full text
A current pandemic which has pushed much work online has revealed a lack of literacies in information security, surveillance capitalism, and the unresolved problems of algorithms and control (e.g., Zuboff, Berners-Lee). Yet there is a decades-old tradition of pedagogies that address the complex interactions of the interdisciplinary technoscientific world (Morin, G. Bateson, Rheingold, Dewey, Freire, Cooper) and the need for ethical approaches (Quéau, Markauskaite and Goodyear, Haidt, Gardner). Some of them emerged from the field of cybernetics (Morin, N. Bateson). Recent events show the need for further popularization of digital literacy, interdisciplinary approaches, intellectual and creative rigor, questions of service and liberty, and dialog on what constitutes ‘good’ professional praxis. This paper considers the always unfinished work of pedagogy to ‘rise up’ above names—here, of humanist technoscience—to consider what belonging together means. Through a largely hermeneutic approach, the problem of the technoscientific and its history in cybernetics is remembered in such a way as to remind us of features of our shared creative odyssey towards ‘something of greater significance’ (Dewey) and to show that uncritically downloading the latest app or giving up on the question of taking professional care is for the lotus-eaters

Prenominal genitive attributes in German phraseology

    No full text
Prenominal genitive attributes rarely appear in phraseologisms in the contemporary German language. They are most frequent in proverbs, and much rarer in idioms and idiomatic phrases. These attributes are characterized by diachronic resistance in all phraseologisms, and often by syntactic reduplication in proverbs. Very often they occur together with phonetic recessiveness, among which alliteration and homoioptoton, as a distinct type of homoioteleuton, are the most common

    Open Access Repositories in Serbia

    No full text
Created from the need to store and use deposited digital information, Open Access repositories provide access to digital content from anywhere at any time. They also provide full open access to all deposited content. Open Access repositories in Serbia have been present since 2012. When the Repository of the University of Belgrade was established, until today when institutional digital repositories are rapidly developing. In this paper we have presented the growth and development of Open Access Repositories in Serbia. Data on active Open Access Repositories in Serbia were obtained by searching the ROAR and Open DOAR services. By searching the contents of the Open DOAR Directory on the Internet, we obtained various statistical data (type of software, language representation, subject and increase in the number of repositories), which we analyzed in this paper. We have also presented three most important aggregators of scientific literature in Serbia (doiSerbia, Sc Index and DoiFil) that provide complete open access to all content without restrictions. Their development has improved scientific publishing in Serbia and improved the visibility of national publishing scientific production at the global level

Funkcija elipse, aluzije i ironije u tumačenju lirike

    No full text
Starting from the assumption of the significance of verbal omission in the artistic literature this paper is based on the study of interpretative function of ellipsis, allusion and irony in lyrical poetry. Relying on relevant theoretical sources (C. Brooks, K. Guillen, L. Hutcheon, A. William, P. de Man, S. Newstok, H. Van Tress etc.) the paper considers these concepts both as rhetorical figures and structural procedures. Ellipsis is here theoretically considered as intrinsic deficiency, allusion as extrinsic deficinecy, and irony as intrinsic-extrinsic deficiency of possible verbal content. Special attention is paid to (non)verbal context and it's semantic influence as a widespread discursive tool in modern literature and art. As explicative examples the autor took poems of several promminent modern Serbian poets (M. Nastasijevic, S. Raickovic, A. Ristovic). At the end of the paper, the author exposes the theoretical and metodological cosequences of his study
