Theodosios' poetics and its roots in the antiquity

    No full text
Theodosios of Hilandar is one of the few medieval writers whose work includes explicit poetic views. These views are in line with Horatio's well-known statement on the function of literature (prodesse et delectare, utile et dulce); however, the way in which these views reached and were incorporated in the Serbian medieval literature is very specific. Theodosios' view is that the lives of exceptional people are written and read for the benefit of the readers/listeners - 'these works are beneficial to the listeners per se and that benefit is the writers' reward'. In addition, the moral instruction obtained from the reading of hagiographic works can be very pleasant. By stressing the motives of 'benefit' and 'pleasant instruction' in his prose works, Theodosios joins the advocates of the approach to literature and its function which had an undisputable legitimacy since the antiquity and throughout the Middle Ages, even in the centuries that followed. The roots of that approach can be found in the classical Greek (Aristotelian) poetics which was adopted and further developed by Hellenistic writers, particularly by Neoptolemus (3rd century BC) and which, through late antiquity (The Academy of Athens in particular) and early Byzantine period and, later, Aton literature - reached Theodosios

Form as an expression of function

Tekst predstavlja analizu estetske kategorije to prepon, prikladnosti, od ranog antičkog perioda do savremene revitalizacije istog pojma pod novim imenom - funkcionalnost. The paper offers an analysis of the aesthetic category to prepon, suitability, from an early antique period to contemporary revitalization of the same notion under the new name - function. The twentieth century architecture is the place of rebirth of the aesthetic category that gave intonation to the concept of beauty in pre - philosophical antique Greece, as well as to the philosophy of Socrates, Plato and Xenophon. Author's main theses are that the architecture is natural and logical birthplace of to prepon, that two main streams in contemporary architecture: organicism and geometrical rationalism have the same key notion in common - function and that suitability, or function as aesthetic category can be treated as a prysm for the central currents in contemporary art

This paper is a part of the larger work on Stevan Raičković's poems and the book on contemporary Serbian poetry. The second part of the same investigation into the law of lyric is published in the collection of essays on Raičković Poetika Stevana Raičkovića (Institut za književnost i umetnost Beograd, 2010). Raičković states that he has not changed his poems in The Collected Works of Stevan Raičković, but there are many significant changes of his poetics to be traced in this edition. He has reedited his collections of poems and established poetical value of diaries, memories and notes throughout his oeuvre. There is a shift in his poetry from the poetics of pure lyricism to the poetry of life experiences and from verses to the notes. That shift is more important than changes of the form and other alterations of the verse in Raičković's works. The most important change reveals the basic law of poetry unrestricted on verse

Understanding disaster: Postmodern age in apocalyptic perspective

Beginning with the basic concept of the apocalypse as the one of destruction leading toward salvation, the author sets out to elaborate the history of ancient literature, as well as the archeology of the postmodern condition, with the aim of delineating a few of the relevant literary and historical moments in contemporary Serbian prose writing, ranging from Radomir Konstantinović up to Goran Petrović and Vladimir Tasić. The issue of the postmodern condition is thus brought into relation with the historical and literary dynamics, highlighting the arche-traces of postmodern strategies present with Dositej and Njegoš

Adjectives as a separate word class in the Japanese language: Features and definition problems

The aim of this paper is to examine adjectives in the Japanese language in a general way: their morphological features, functions and meanings as well as the differences and similarities between the two groups of adjectives in Japanese, which will be referred to in this paper as 'I' adjectives and 'NA' adjectives. We will also be looking at their relationship with Japanese verbs and nouns. As adjectives represent a distinct word class it was necessary to define them in the wider context of word classes and to this purpose we briefly referred to the Japanese linguistic tradition. We have also uncovered some of the practical problems that arise during grammatical analysis of typologically different languages, such as the Serbian and Japanese language. Through dealing with the linguistic and non-linguistic factors that influence the choice of terminology used in the description of a language, the investigation of this problem makes possible the further understanding of adjectives and word classes, not only in the Japanese language but also in general

Political Aspects of Shakespeare’s History Plays: Modernist and Postmodernist Readings in a ’Conflict of Interpretations’

    No full text
This paper analyzes different approaches to the political contents of Shakespeare’s history plays in the modernist and the postmodernist theoretical framework. While the modernist critics were undoubtedly aware of the complex political strategies transposed in drama, they mostly tended to analyze the presupposed dominant features of the Elizabethan ‘discursive formation’. Postmodernist approaches to the history plays, within a wide theoretical scope which includes deconstruction, new historicism, cultural materialism, feminist criticism, Bakhtinian criticism and psychoanalysis, express a more skeptical attitude in interpreting political contents and emphasize different instances of implied marginal and subversive meanings in the history plays. It is argued that the hermeneutical concept of the ‘conflict of interpretations’ developed by Paul Ricoeur in De l’interprétation: essai sur Freud (1965) has its special instance in the understanding of the political aspects of Shakespeare’s history plays in the twentieth century. A special attention is paid to the most recent postmodernist approach, which has been emerging under the name of presentism. It tends to relate the political contents of the plays to the political context of their twenty-first century critics/ readers/spectators

Lessing's aesthetics and the idea of subjectivity

In the text Lessing's Aesthetics and the Idea of Subjectivity has been analysed the meaning of the term 'enlightenment'. In this context the author offers an unusual interpretation of the term enlightenment - through the prism of the idea of subjectivity - as the power of human mind to cast the light and give intonation to it's object. In this paper the thought of G. E. Lessing has been recognized as the birthplace of this connotation of the term enlightenment. Using the analysis of Lessing's key thesis in his famous Laokoon, author develops her thesis that an important aspect of the idea of subjectivity in eighteenth century has been formed within the Lessing's philosophy
