The subject of emigration in the context of post-Yugoslav wars in contemporary Slovak Vojvodina playwriting
675
This study focuses on Slovak Vojvodina drama in the last decade of the 20th and the
beginning of the 21st century, with an emphasis on the theme of emigration as one of
the important topics in current dramatic production in Serbia. It analyses dramatic
texts from the collections Nová slovenská vojvodinská dráma ([New Slovak Vojvodina
drama], 2004, 2014) and the journal Nový život written by Slovak author Ľubomír
Šárik, Slovak Vojvodina author Jan Hrubík, and playwright Vladislava Fekete, origi-
nally from Vojvodina but living in Slovakia. The authors in these dramas respond to
the complex socio-political situation in Yugoslavia, particularly Serbia, in the 1990s
and its subsequent impacts on the following decades, including the prominent issue
of Slovak emigration from Serbia. The portrayal of the thematic and motivational
layer of emigration varies in value depending on the creative potential of the author
and their contextual placement. It ranges from unique dramatic story backgrounds
(Ľ. Šárik, J. Hrubík) to the existentially heightened description of the immigrant’s
border situation, including those from the Slovak enclave in Serbia (V. Fekete). This
research opens up space for a more active intercultural dialogue between Slovak,
Slovak Vojvodina, and Serbian drama.
Mad scientists in H. G. Wells's early fiction
This article analyses six mad scientist characters from H. G. Wells's early fiction. The analysed mad scientists are as follows – the Bacteriologist from "The Stolen Bacillus", Hapley from "A Moth – Genus Novo", the Time Traveller from The Time Machine, Doctor Moreau from The Island of Doctor Moreau, Griffin from The Invisible Man, and Cavor from The First Men in the Moon. The article uses a broader definition of the mad scientist, one that includes not only evil scientific geniuses but also other, more benign characters, as long as they are eccentric enough to be considered mad. The said mad scientists are divided into three different categories, depending on whether they are evil, benign or neither of the two. The article shows that the analysed mad scientists reflect the early Wells's disbelief in the power of science to change the world for the better. It is also argued that Wells's varied body of mad scientists enriched and diversified the mad scientist trope in the history of the SF genre

The Polaire Brotherhood (La Fraternité polaire) in Belgrade
The Polaire Brotherhood (La Fraternité polaire) was an occult society active in interwar Paris. Some of the important names of the French occult scene of the period were among its members. According to the reports in the bulletin of the society, there was also a branch operating in Belgrade in the 1930s. However, this has not previously been confirmed. Archive materials used for this paper attest to the existence of the Belgrade group for the first time. Its most important figure was Ksenija Atanasijević (1894-1981), a prominent philosopher. Therefore, attention is also paid to her involvement with Theosophy and co-masonry and the place of esotericism in her work. The activity of the group reminded of the Theosophical - it included meetings, lectures and meditations. They were also familiar with The Oracle of Astral Force (the Fraternité's key method). The existence of a branch of the French brotherhood in this period can be understood in the context of the French-Serbian cultural relations. This interest in the "alternative"helps us get a better understanding of the history of Serbian intellectuals
The image of Hungarian Literature as a polysystem in Serbia: A brief overview
The paper offers a general overview of the place that Hungarian literature occupies in the polysystem of translated literature in Serbia. Unlike established philological disciplines with a longer tradition (English, German, French or Russian philology), which offer several different historical overviews of the history of a given literature, thus enabling the experts, the students and the general public to gain a more systematic insight into the respective literatures, there has only been one history of Hungarian literature published in Serbia so far. Given the fact that it was published back in 1976, and that many aspects of its methodology and insights have become outdated, it is an urgent necessity to produce a new work on the subject, specifically for the Serbian readership
Engagement and constructiveness in online news comments in English and Russian
We investigate the relationship between Engagement and constructiveness in online news comments by analyzing the frequency and type of Engagement expressions in a corpus of English and Russian comments, following the Appraisal framework. The comments in question, 10,000 words in each language, were posted in response to opinion articles in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail and the Russian online news channel RT. In the context of online news comments, users generally characterize constructive comments as posts that tend to create a civil dialogue through remarks that are relevant to the article and do not provoke an emotional response. Through quantitative and qualitative analyses, we conclude that the language of constructive comments is more explicitly subjective in both languages. The main difference in the use of Engagement expressions in constructive and non-constructive comments lies along the lines of certainty/uncertainty and reliability/unreliability. As for cross-linguistic differences, it seems that English constructive comments place emphasis on the reliability of a commenter's knowledge, while Russian constructive comments employ more modals of necessity, which have a prescriptive function
Semi-condensation constructions in the Serbian language
The term semi-condensation itself, more than the phenomenon it names, is unknown not only to Serbian but also to linguists in general. In contrast to the widespread and almost universally accepted term „condensation of the sentence”, about the occurrence of semi-condensation, as a rule without terminological determination, in Serbian syntax one can only come across a few passing comments. By semi-condensation of dependent clauses, we consider the translation of a dependent conjunctive finite clause into a non-finite construction in which the conjunction or part of the conjunction of the dependent clause and the predicate are retained as the equivalent of the nominal predicate from the finite clause. The paper showes that semi-condensation, considering whether it is realized with a dependent conjunction or only with the first part of a complex dependent conjunction, is realized as: a) conjunction, and b) „semi-conjunction”. The conjunction is achievable only with subordinating concessive monolexical conjunctions iako, mada, premda i makar (albeit, though, although and even though). Semi-condensed conjunctive concessive structures, since dependent conjunctions are only conjunctions of dependent clauses, we consider to be verbless clauses. „Semi-conjunctive” semi-condensers arise only from dependent clauses with complex conjunctions, and not all of them, but only from causative clauses with the conjunction budući da (since), comparatively equivalent with the conjunction kao što (as), and comparatively differential with the conjunction nego što (than) – by these conjunctions being reduced to their first component: budući, kao i nego (since, as well as and than). Since their „conjunctive component” is not a complete conjunction of a dependent clause (it cannot itself introduce a dependent clause into a complex one), semi-conjunctive semi-condensers, unlike conjunctive ones, are not clauses – but non-clausal sentence members, namely predicate appositives (with budući i kao – since and as) and comparative complement (with nego – than).

The basic idea is that the new world order, despite
all the virtual blackouts, does not bring anything new, even today,
and that all the effort of its construction consists in a disguise
that will confirm the monism of power, and not the meaning of
the transcendent idea of freedom. Multipolarity will again end in
monism because, says Heraclitus, “the latter, turning over, becomes
the first, and the former, turning, the latter”. If so, why should
we even think of a new order? Obviously, there are opposites
whose confrontation leads us to this, but it is futile to immerse
ourselves in them because the outcome is always the synthesis of
one power. A great deal of energy is wasted in the process, as the
goal is a world without energy that lends itself to the attributes of
power. This paper is also an attempt to move theoretical thinking
from the ruling picture of the world towards a set of concepts
of the neoplatonist language, which uses different concepts to
try not to overlook the hidden strongholds of the deep order. In
this, the thought of Kosta Stojanović plays a crucial role, which
enables a better understanding of energy and its relationship to
the world order. Without new concepts, whatever happens, we
always stay in the old framework. The belate is pointed out as a
key geopolitical term
