Transformer-Based Composite Language Models for Text Evaluation and Classification

    No full text
Parallel natural language processing systems were previously successfully tested on the tasks of part-of-speech tagging and authorship attribution through mini-language modeling, for which they achieved significantly better results than independent methods in the cases of seven European languages. The aim of this paper is to present the advantages of using composite language models in the processing and evaluation of texts written in arbitrary highly inflective and morphology-rich natural language, particularly Serbian. A perplexity-based dataset, the main asset for the methodology assessment, was created using a series of generative pre-trained transformers trained on different representations of the Serbian language corpus and a set of sentences classified into three groups (expert translations, corrupted translations, and machine translations). The paper describes a comparative analysis of calculated perplexities in order to measure the classification capability of different models on two binary classification tasks. In the course of the experiment, we tested three standalone language models (baseline) and two composite language models (which are based on perplexities outputted by all three standalone models). The presented results single out a complex stacked classifier using a multitude of features extracted from perplexity vectors as the optimal architecture of composite language models for both tasks

The Principle of General Contextualization in Serbian Diachronic Linguistics

As opposed to literary history, the development of modern Serbian diachronic linguistics has for many decades been unrelated to auxiliary historical disciplines like historiography and other historically oriented sciences, which has largely resulted from a growing gap between social sciences, humanities and philological sciences, as well as from a general decline in the volumes and character of collaboration among professionals in these two compatible research areas. Notably, however, this precarious situation is not limited to Serbia alone, with examples of similar developments in Slavic studies found in other countries as well. Both branches of language history, i.e. that addressing literary language and that addressing vernaculars, must turn more attention to auxiliary historical disciplines, to not only ensure higher accuracy of the results, but also to improve the general scope of academic practices. With the nature of the surviving medieval linguistic corpora in mind, studies in literary language history could especially benefit from a closer and more profound connection with the whole range of history-oriented sciences. This would help eliminate the main disadvantage of isolated linguistic research by placing the research object in a more general context, providing a close connection between research procedures and knowledge from other research areas. As a result, the researcher would be presented with a more complete picture and a greater potential for pertinent interpretation of facts. The paper proposes to apply the abductive method adopted from historiography which has strongly contributed to modern studies by enabling major intellectual shifts and growth of scholarly knowledge. It has been, as far as the Serbian environment is concerned, particularly significant in analyses of the early medieval history. The paper demonstrates the potential of this logical procedure on the study of a late 12th-century manuscript fragment that has helped determine the most probable place for the fragment in the history of Serbian spiritual and written culture

This paper investigates the manifestation of otherness within the fictional world of late-Victorian London depicted in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The analysis begins with an overview of specific socio-cultural factors of the late 19th century that were instrumental in shaping the Gothic image of the British capital, firmly grounded in the idea of otherness. Then, relying on Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, which can elucidate the properties of otherness, the focus of the study shifts to examine how this concept is represented in Stevenson’s tale about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It is concluded that otherness is predominantly located in the notorious London district of Soho and in the figure of Jekyll’s evil double, Edward Hyde. The aim of the analysis is to explain how these two indicators of otherness are portrayed in Stevenson’s text and to clarify how the novella’s major characters, considered to be representative of the fin-de-siècle London society, react to them

Serbian language in the Serbian educational system

    No full text
The paper discusses the status of the Serbian language in society, especially in the education system of the Republic of Serbia. The Serbian language as a teaching subject is quite marginalized and neglected in our educational system, from elementary school to university teaching. Nothing is better outside the education system. We will try to recall those important facts, which we have mentioned before, but we will also refer to the works of well-known language experts and thus, in our opinion, once again draw attention to this important educational, national and identity problem

What Vvedensky's Animals Are Talking About

    No full text
The article examines the language of animals, who are, in one way or another, connected to death and the afterlife, and thus let in on their secrets. Our task is to investigate the speech characteristics of animals, birds, insects, and fish and how they relate to Vvedensky's ideas of conducting a poetic critique of reason, discovering new types of connections in the world, feeling its disconnection and fragmentation of time, and, finally, proving that reason does not understand the world. The language of animals is analyzed in the context of the new cosmogony conceived by Vvedensky that should take us back to the starting point - to the creation of the world, to harmony, in which man, plants, and animals talked to and understood each other

The SERBOVERB Language Resource and Its Multifunctionality

    No full text
Serbian verb inflection is known for its complexity and unpredictability, posing a challenge for L2 Serbian speakers. Existing dictionaries are not well-suited to address the needs of L2 speakers. To overcome these challenges, the author presents SerboVerb, an electronic resource and application that offers a dynamic approach to processing Serbian verb inflection. SerboVerb includes a conjugation, dictionary, and gamification module, and offers paradigms for more than 34,000 verbs. The resource has been developed through a research project between the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès (France) and the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philology (Serbia). The author describes the structure and multifunctionality of SerboVerb, highlighting its potential to provide a more accessible and user-friendly resource for L2 Serbian speakers seeking to resolve their communication problems and improve their language skills. By offering a multifunctional and comprehensive approach to Serbian verb inflection, SerboVerb represents a significant step forward in electronic lexicography

PDIA in the Balkans: The Western Balkans Alumni Association (WBAA) as Positive Deviance

    No full text
This chapter aims to portray why and how WBAA, as an organism, organization, entity, agent, actor, network, … produces emergent effects as a regional entity is a Positive Deviance, as recognized in theory, and more specifically within the Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation by Harvard’s Center for International Development. Positive Deviance is one of the core principles in the PDIA strategy—by “creating (and protecting) environments within and across organizations that encourage experimentation and positive deviance.” First we will briefly elaborate on PDIA and its concepts and describe and encode the distinctiveness of WBAA arguing why and how it is a positive deviance for our Balkans. The expected outcome: to inspire leaders, institutions, CSOs, citizens, academia, … to take the regional approach, moves beyond the silos of a country/domain, has functional bridges with developed countries (for knowhow, funding, coopetition, alignment), and shows “how” coopetition within Western Balkans is to be done. If volunteers can do it, others can surely follow

Еxpressing finality by means of infinitive constructions in the contemporary Italian language ; Выражение целенаправленности инфинитивными конструкциями в современном итальянском языке

    No full text
This doctoral dissertation deals with infinitive constructions expressing finality in the contemporary Italian language. The main goal of this research is to determine and analyze infinitive final constructions at the semantic-syntactic level in the contemporary Italian language. Since the syntactic analysis was carried out within the theoretical framework of generative grammar, the secondary goals of this dissertation are as follows: а) to determine the types and subtypes of control that occur in infinitive final constructions; b) to examine the conditions for different types and subtypes of control in subordinate constructions; c) to determine which arguments of control constructions can control the phonetically unrealized null subject of infinitive final constructions; d) to analyze the morphological and semantic values of implicit subjects. The method of content analysis was used in the research which was conducted from a synchronic perspective. This research is based on the examples taken from CORIS, a corpus of written Italian, the examples excerpted from Italian print and electronic media and the examples reviewed by Italian native speakers. The analysis has shown that all subtypes of obligatory control (exhaustive, partial and split) can occur in infinitive final constructions in the Italian language and that their occurrence is conditioned by: a) the verb semantics of the control construction; b) the verb semantics of the infinitive construction or c) the verb semantics of the control and infinitive construction. The research findings indicate that all subtypes of non-obligatory control (implicit, arbitrary, long-distance and speech act control) can also occur in infinitive final constructions in the Italian language. The dissertation reveals that the controllers of the implicit subject of infinitive final constructions can be subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, adverbial complements of place and sociative complements of the control verb, as well as that the morphological and semantic value of the implicit subject are equivalent in the constructions of exhaustive and split control
