Labor of Care and Contracts: A Study of Surrogacy after the Transnational Ban in India
No full textCharacterized by the interplay of care and contracts, surrogacy is an exclusive form of gendered work. The paper is based on a micro-level ethnographic study exploring the lived and embodied challenges of commercial gestational surrogates in Gujarat, India, who were undertaking surrogacy work after the ban on transnational surrogacy. The experiential accounts collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews bear the challenges, stigma, and shame involved in surrogacy work. Not only is surrogacy work devalued, deprived of dignity, and shrouded in secrecy, but it is also corrupted by contracts, complicated by alienation and relinquishment of the gestated child. Surrogates disguise their work and stay in surrogacy hostels. Poverty in India compels many women to engage in surrogacy to eke out a living and improve their living conditions. Surrogate mothers are poorly paid, deprived of health benefits and legal security, they receive only twenty percent of the total cost of the surrogacy arrangement, and are also treated as fungible and disposable. The paper adopts the ethics of care perspective to analyze surrogacy arrangements. Such a perspective is directed toward promoting a responsible and humane attitude toward commercial surrogates. It is motivated by the need to uphold the dignity of the surrogates, their legal rights, and the social recognition of their work. No full textDoes the quest to reduce architectures negative impact on the climate have to involve “designing for discomfort”? In this text, I consider whether a turn toward pleasurable experiences in the realm of everyday life can also be a tool for pursuing change. As I argue, this is possible through meaningful architecture that perpetuates a sense of local identity andoffers a multi-sensory experience. These can affect the well-being and health of a society – aspects that I believe are necessary to address the health of the environment and the planet. I base my reflections on research in the fields of everyday aesthetics and somaesthetics, and demonstrate their practical dimension through the analysis and interpretation of a selected project. The case in question is a house in São Paulo, which serves as an inspiration to look for similar but more generally accessible architectural forms. In the end, the examples described turn out to have not only features that affect multisensory perception and well-being, but use natural materials and can affect a favorable microclimate.Czy dążenie do redukcji negatywnego wpływu architektury na klimat musi wiązać się z „projektowaniem dyskomfortu”? W niniejszym artykule zastanawiam się, czy zwrot ku przyjemnym doświadczeniom z obszaru codzienności także może być narzędziem dążenia do zmiany. Jak przekonuję, jest to możliwe dzięki architekturze, która utrwala poczucie lokalnej tożsamości i oferuje doświadczenia wielozmysłowe. Te mogą wpływać na dobrostan i zdrowie społeczeństwa – aspekty, które uważam za konieczne, aby zajmować się zdrowiem środowiska i planety. Swoje rozważania opieram na badaniach z zakresu estetyki codzienności i somaestetyki, a ich praktyczny wymiar ukazuję poprzez analizę i interpretację wybranego projektu – domu w São Paulo. Importance of the Relationship Between the Independent Financial Advisor and the Small and Medium-Sized Entrepreneur
No full textThe purpose of the article. The purpose of the paper was to determine the importance of the relationship between the independent financial advisor and SMEs. No academic or practice-oriented research has been yet undertaken in this field in Poland. The presented study aims to reduce the identified research gap.
Methodology. The fulfillment of the research objectives will be based on the analysis of a survey conducted among SME entrepreneurs who reported a need for the services of an independent financial advisor.
Results of the research. The study, carried out in 2024, involved 50 participants from the SME sector from the Greater Poland voivodeship (province in Poland). Building a long-term relationship between an independent financial intermediary and an SME was primarily driven by trust and competence. The main benefits SMEs gain from working with an independent advisor are time savings and a safer arrangement of financing transactions. Long-term drivers in working with an independent financial advisor were important to SME sample, whereas short-term factors, including the cost of the advisory service itself, were relatively less important

No full textThis study focused on the gender gap in sickness absenteeism in Central and Eastern European countries from 2010 to 2023. Eurostat data and the shift-share analysis (SSA) method were applied to assess the impact of regional, sectoral and local factors on changes in sickness absenteeism. The findings highlighted variations in the length of sickness absence among European countries, in relation to CEE region’s overall developmental status. Additionally, the study confirmed the significance of the research and the growing issue of the gender gap in sickness absence in CEE countries. The results of the SSA analysis indicate that gender inequalities in sickness absenteeism decreased in most countries during the period studied, but the COVID-19 pandemic increased these differences in some sectors. The study provides important information for policymakers and employers seeking to promote equality in the workplace and improve the health and well-being of employees.Niniejsze badanie skupiało się na analizie różnic płciowych w absencji chorobowej w krajach Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej w latach 2010–2023. W celu oceny wpływu czynników regionalnych, sektorowych i lokalnych na zmiany w absencji chorobowej wykorzystano dane Eurostatu oraz metodę analizy shift-share (SSA). Wyniki badania ujawniły zróżnicowanie długości absencji chorobowej w krajach europejskich w kontekście ogólnego poziomu rozwoju regionu Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Ponadto badanie potwierdziło istotność podjętej tematyki oraz narastający problem różnic płciowych w absencji chorobowej w krajach tego regionu. Wyniki analizy SSA wskazują, że nierówności płciowe w absencji chorobowej zmniejszyły się w większości krajów w badanym okresie. Badanie dostarcza istotnych informacji dla decydentów politycznych i pracodawców, którzy dążą do promowania równości w miejscu pracy oraz poprawy zdrowia i dobrostanu pracowników

Get PDFSocial activity, understood as activity in both non-governmental organisations and informal groups, not only fulfils critical social functions, but also plays a measurable economic role, generating employment, providing professional experience and responding to key community needs. Effective management of such organisations relies on a competent team and, above all, on a leader capable of setting a strategic direction, making key decisions and ensuring overall effectiveness.
This article identifies the competencies considered essential for leaders of social activity based on the perspectives of activists who work with them in both formal and informal contexts. The research question is: What should be the competencies of a leader of social activity, in the opinion of social activists?
The international CIVIC INCUBATOR project (2024–2026) provides the empirical basis, funded under the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme. As part of the project, public consultations with representatives of informal groups were held in Łódź on 13 December 2024. Using the design thinking methodology, participants developed Persona – a conceptual profile of an effective grassroots leader – which was the basis for analysing the desired characteristics, skills and behaviours. The study highlights the growing convergence of leadership competencies between the third sector and business, while emphasising their clear focus on social impact.Aktywność społeczna, rozumiana jako działalność zarówno w organizacjach pozarządowych jak i grupach nieformalnych – pełni nie tylko ważne funkcje społeczne, ale także odgrywa wymierną rolę gospodarczą, generując zatrudnienie, zapewniając doświadczenie zawodowe i odpowiadając na kluczowe potrzeby społeczności. Skuteczne zarządzanie takimi organizacjami opiera się na kompetentnym zespole, a przede wszystkim na liderze zdolnym do wyznaczania strategicznego kierunku, podejmowania kluczowych decyzji i zapewniania ogólnej efektywności.
W niniejszym artykule określono kompetencje uważane za niezbędne dla liderów aktywności społecznej, w oparciu o perspektywy aktywistów współpracujących z nimi zarówno w kontekście formalnym, jak i nieformalnym. Pytanie badawcze brzmi: jakie powinny być kompetencje lidera aktywności społecznych w opinii społeczników?

Przestrzeń pozasceniczna w „Fenicjankach” eurypidesa i jej funkcja dramaturgiczna
Get PDFEuripides’ The Phoenician Women belongs to the category of tragedies in which the offstage space – that is, events occurring beyond the immediate visual perception of the audience – plays a significant role. These events are crucial not only for the development of the drama but also for the poetic vision conveyed by the author through them. In depicting actions that, due to their nature, could not be shown ad oculos to the spectators, Euripides employs messengers’ speeches and dialogues among the dramatis personae, thereby drawing upon the audience’s imaginative faculty and utilizing the commentary layer of the drama. Thus, the spectator participates in the expansion of the tragic stage space, conjuring in the mind’s eye poetic images of the offstage world. Given the rich textual representation of offstage space in The Phoenician Women, the present analysis will focus on two scenes: the teichoscopy (lines 98-201) and the first part of the Messenger’s speech to Jocasta (lines 1090-1138), which alludes to the former

Get PDFIn 2025, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Latin conference Concilium Latinum Lodziense, held annually since 2004 at the University of Lodz by the Department of Classical Philology at UŁ, the Polish Philological Society, and the UŁ Foreign Languages Center. This article presents a brief history of the conference along with the themes of its individual editions. W tym artykule ukazana jest krótka historia konferencji wraz z tematyką poszczególnych edycji.
