    Get PDF
One of the unsolved mysteries of Reymont’s biography is his acquaintance with Antonina Szczygielska, whom he probably met in Skierniewice in 1893. The anonymous letters kept in the Ossolineum Library were considered by Barbara Koc to be written entirely to Szczygielska, which turns out to be incorrect. This article takes up the topic of Reymont’s relationship with Szczygielska, which – according to previous researchers – was even an engagement. By illuminating the research task with new sources and arranging the facts entered in Reymont’s notebook notes, the attributions, dates, personal and local identifications are questioned. Oświetlając zadanie badawcze nowymi źródłami i porządkując fakty wpisane w notatki brulionowe Reymonta, podaje się w wątpliwość atrybucje, daty, identyfikacje osobowe i miejscowe

Marcin Broniowski, autor szesnastowiecznego dzieła pt. Opis Tatarii (Tartariae descriptio). Nowe ustalenia biograficzne i historycznoliterackie

The Polish traveler and diplomat Marcin Broniowski (died on September 21st, 1592) was the author of the work Tartariae descriptio (written in 1578), containing an interesting description of sixteenth-century Crimea, as well as the Crimean Khanate. On the basis of new discoveries in the Polish archives I reconstructed not only many basic elements of Marcin Broniowski’s biography, but also the exact chronology of all his visits to Crimea. My observations allow me to better describe Marcin Broniowski as a Polish diplomat and envoy. In the next three sections of my article, I intend to discuss all early modern editions and translations of Broniowski’s Tartariae descriptio, as well as an influence of this work on the knowledge about Eastern Europe and the formation of European geographical thought.

The article is an attempt to present the image of Władysław Stanisław Reymont as depicted in the publications of the literary critic Jan Lorentowicz. The transformations in Lorentowicz’s statements are traced–ranging from objective, albeit harsh, articles dedicated to the work of the author of Chłopi (The Peasants), to memoirs of a distinctly critical nature published in 1934 in “Kurier Poranny” and later reprinted in Spojrzenie wstecz (1935). This paper is dedicated to analyzing the harmful narrative embedded in these works, which is full of irony and exaggerations – particularly focusing on the distorted portrayal of Reymont based on exaggerated anecdotes from the period of close acquaintance between the two writers (1896–1899), when they shared an apartment at 6 and 12 rue Rollin in Paris.Artykuł stanowi próbę przybliżenia wizerunku Władysława Stanisława Reymonta zawartego w publikacjach krytyka literackiego Jan Lorentowicza. Prześledzone zostały przemiany w wypowiedziach Lorentowicza – od obiektywnych, choć surowych artykułów poświęconych twórczości autora Chłopów, do wspomnień o wyraźnie krytycznym charakterze, opublikowanych w roku 1934 w „Kurierze Porannym”, a następnie przedrukowanych w Spojrzeniu wstecz (1935).

Religijne aspekty nowelistyki Władysława Stanisława Reymonta w czasie I wojny światowej. Kilka dopowiedzeń

    Get PDF
The author would like to recall W.S. Reymont as a “chronicler of war”. The volume of short stories published in 1919 entitled Behind the Front (re-published in 1925 as A cracked bell) was already the subject of interest both to researchers of World War I literature and to reymontologists (B. Utkowska, M.J. Olszewska, M. Jazownik). In the article, in accordance with its title, the author – often referring to the findings and analyses of the aforementioned scholars – tries to shed new light (“a few additions”) on the war short stories of the author of The Peasants, emphasizing their Christian dimension (in line with the intentions and religiosity of Reymont himself), as well as their anti-Germanism and anti-Jewish accents. By showing the heroism of the Polish peasant in the face of the brutality of war, he emphasized its source: the Christian, Catholic faith. The narrator usually does not distance himself from this faith, being a kind of eyewitness and a member of this rural community. Writing about war as a work of Satan and an emanation of evil, Reymont simultaneously emphasizes its inevitability.

Percepcja Londynu i Paryża w Dzienniku nieciągłym i korespondencji Władysława Stanisława Reymonta

The article analyzes the way Władysław Stanisław Reymont perceived London and Paris during his trips in the years 1894–1903 based on selected fragments from his diaries and correspondence. The author shows that the writer’s reception of both cities was ambivalent – on the one hand, they were fascinated by their size, cultural richness, and monuments, while on the other hand, they were overwhelmed by the noise, crowds, gloomy architecture, and a sense of alienation. Reymont, raised in the countryside and aware of his lack of social skills, often felt alienated in metropolises, which influenced his emotional and changeable assessments of the places he visited. Both in London and Paris, he exhibited the characteristics of a flâneur – a wanderer who absorbs the city through his senses, noting details of architecture, landscapes, and the behavior of the inhabitants. Both cities, depending on many factors, alternately became myths of uniqueness for the visitor, as well as symbols of moral chaos and disappointment, and their perception reflected the writer’s unstable inner world.Artykuł analizuje sposób, w jaki Władysław Stanisław Reymont postrzegał Londyn i Paryż podczas wyjazdów w latach 1894–1903.

    Get PDF
Starting from an analysis of the actual status of The Peasants by W.S. Reymont as a novel traditionally included in high school curricula, the author presents a comprehensive reading project focused on a selected fragment of the work. This project is structured around the love triangle between Antek, Jagna, and Maciej, and thus around fundamental dilemmas of humanity. The article explains the rationale behind the proposed reading strategy, outlines its philosophical assumptions and principles for designing such educational projects, and discusses the criteria for selecting fragments from extensive literary classics and constructing their contextual framework. Through an analysis and interpretation of a chosen excerpt, the article demonstrates the stages of designing school-based reflection on issues of “longue durée” and those belonging to the “canon of universal problems”, and, consequently, the principles of school reading. The solutions presented exemplify a concept of humanistic and anthropological education advocated by the author and validated through practice – an approach focused on the subjectivity/agency of both learners and teachers.

Bengali and Dutch: A Phonological Contrastive Analysis of the front Monophthongs

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the monophthongs of Bengali and Dutch, analyzing the similarities and differences in the phonetic characteristics between the two languages, particularly focusing on front monophthongs. The study determines the challenges faced by Bengali-speaking learners of Dutch (BLD) and Dutch-speaking learners of Bengali (DLB) as a foreign language. Using a quantitative-contrastive phonemic analysis (Haque, 2015; Haque & Jannat, 2022; Haque & Sharfuddin, 2023), the study mathematically demonstrates that BLD learners face greater difficulty in acquiring their target language, as Dutch has twice as many front monophthongs as Bengali. Additionally, no front vowels in both languages share identical phonetic qualities, and there are no mutual phonemes. These phonological differences indicate significant challenges for learners in acquiring their target languages

Mental Health in the Context of Training Future Interpreters: The Case of Slovakia

    No full text
Mental health is increasingly recognized as a critical issue in interpreter training. Interpreters frequently encounter cognitive and emotional stressors (Moser–Mercer et al., 1998; Valero-Garcés, 2005). Despite growing awareness, interpreter education often lacks structured support for emotional regulation and stress management – skills essential for maintaining performance and well-being. In Slovakia, the mental health of interpreters gained attention following the Ukrainian refugee crisis, which saw many interpreting students thrust into crisis situations with little preparation (Hodáková and Ukušová, 2023). This chapter, based on survey data from 116 students and 12 interpreting teachers across Slovak universities, highlights the urgent need to integrate resilience and personality-focused training into interpreter education. Recommendations include expanding Nitra’s \u27Mental Hygiene\u27 course and embedding personality-based activities into practical interpreting training, especially for future public service interpreters

A Hybrid Medium—Life (and Love) in John Ashbery’s Poetry

    No full text
The article focuses on the form of John Ashbery’s long poems, with a view to discussing it as a vitalist formula. Ashbery continues the American romantic vitalism by bringing it close to perspectives provided by contemporary post-secular thought. In this context, Ashbery is a poet of what the Polish post-secular scholar Agata Bielik-Robson calls “life enhanced”—a position achieved by human subjectivity that becomes conscious of its immersion in materiality, while also retaining an individuating distance from the orders of nature and death. However, given Ashbery’s American transcendentalist heritage, his is a modification of the post-secular position. In it, life is a quality of the poetic medium which develops a hybrid connecting negative transcendence, essential to Bielik-Robson’s “life enhanced,” with the immanently materialist flow of experience. On one hand, Ashbery’s hybrid mediums can be associated with the immanence of the flux of experience described in William James’s concepts of “radical empiricism.” On the other, Ashbery is also a poet of negativity that disturbs the flow of immanence—a longing for completion that is a remnant of transcendentalist models informing romantic thought. The hybrid medium of Ashbery’s long poems is a form of subjective life in which the psychological complications of the transcendence-based models—skepticism or solipsism—are modified as traces of transcendence merging with the flux of experience. The result is an environment in which material life obtains resolution, while the psychological subject recognizes its connectedness to the material habitat
