Artificial intelligence in higher education and research: A sample of tourism academic opinions
No full textThe rise and swift advance of artificial intelligence technologies has led to substantial modifications in educational procedures, encompassing learning, teaching and the research process. Although possessing impactful and enabling characteristics, it is obvious that these technologies are the focal point of significant debates. This research aims to explore the opinions of tourism academics regarding the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) within educational and research frameworks, while also recognizing the potential benefits and obstacles associated with them. The data obtained from 15 semi-structured interviews was scrutinized using descriptive and content analysis methodologies. The analyses were carried out with the assistance of MAXQDA software. It was observed that the primary strength of AI tools lies in their rapidity, while their main weakness is the dissemination of inaccurate data. Despite the perspective that AI is incapable of substituting human contributions because it does not possess emotions, its value for reliability has gained considerable attention
Reformy agrarne w Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej na przykładzie ordynacji chroberskiej
No full textAgrarian reforms were one of the many problems facing the Polish state following its rebirth in 1918. The modernisation of agriculture in the Second Polish Republic was driven not only by the need to satisfy a “hunger for land” among the rural population or to rationalise farming in the country, but also by the need to harmonise agrarian relations in parts of the country that had been under the rule of different foreign powers. The flagship undertakings were agricultural reforms implemented under the acts of 1920 and 1925. Issues to be resolved included the abolition of servitudes, and land consolidation. Subdivision work was accelerated by the great economic crisis of 1929–1935, whose negative effects the authorities attempted to alleviate through subdivision carried out under the 1932 Act on facilitating the repayment of onerous debts. The situation in the Chroberz entailed estate examined here was, as in other such estates, somewhat different than in most landed estates. As entailed land was still legally inalienable in the interwar period (it was not covered by the 1920 legislation) and the estate was burdened with debt, the owners were forced to resort to behind-the-scenes dealings with the political elites.Reformy agrarne były jednym z wielu problemów, przed jakimi stanęło odrodzone w 1918 r. państwo polskie. Przeprowadzana w Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej modernizacja rolnictwa nie dotyczyła jedynie kwestii zaspokojenia „głodu ziemi” wśród ludności wiejskiej czy racjonalizacji prowadzonej na terenie kraju gospodarki rolnej, ale była także związana z potrzebą ujednolicenia stosunków agrarnych, wynikającą z dziedzictwa trzech zaborów w poszczególnych częściach państwa. Sztandarowymi przedsięwzięciami były reformy rolne realizowane na podstawie ustaw z 1920 r. oraz 1925 r., wśród kwestii do rozwiązania znajdowały się także te związane z likwidacją serwitutów czy komasacją gruntów. Prowadzone prace parcelacyjne przyspieszył wielki kryzys gospodarczy lat 1929–1935, którego negatywne skutki starano się niwelować poprzez parcelację prowadzoną na podstawie ustawy o ułatwieniu spłaty uciążliwych zobowiązań z 1932 r. Sytuacja w będącej przedmiotem rozważań ordynacji chroberskiej była, podobnie jak w innych tego typu majątkach, nieco inna od większości ziemskich posiadłości. Grunty ordynackie w dobie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego w dalszym ciągu zgodnie z prawem były niezbywalne (nie zostały objęte literą ustawodawstwa z 1920 r.), co w obliczu ciążącego na majątku długu wymuszało na właścicielach zakulisowe zabiegi wśród elit politycznych

No full textThe main target of this paper is to present the memory and knowledge about the local history and consciousness about the places of remembrance such as the historic granary designed by Walter Gropius in Jankowo, Drawsko Pomorskie municipality. The main research method used was interviews with the village residents. The main part of the paper is a synthesis of the main topics and common elements of the interviewed people’s statements with relevant quotes. This paper is a starting point for further research on the local historical consciousness of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship’s villages.Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie pamięci mieszkańców o historii lokalnej i świadomości o miejscach pamięci, takich jak np. zabytkowy spichlerz projektu Waltera Gropiusa w Jankowie w gminie Drawsko Pomorskie. Główną metodą badawczą były rozmowy z osobami zamieszkującymi wieś. Część właściwą tekstu stanowi zestawienie głównych tematów i elementów wspólnych wypowiedzi rozmówców z przywołaniem odpowiednich cytatów. La punteggiatura italiana nella traduzione. Analisi comparativa della Costituzione italiana nella versione originale e dell’apposita traduzione in polacco
No full textHow much does a comma weigh in a text? What is the significance of adding or omitting a comma in translation? Can differences in punctuation usage lead to semantic differences? A parallel lecture of the text of the Constitution of the Italian Republic and its Polish translation will serve as a starting point for further reflections on the meaning of this elusive element. The comparative analysis will be preceded by a brief overview of the development of punctuation in Italian and Polish, as well as observations on the different uses of punctuation in both languages. Since Italian punctuation is based on prosodic-syntactic principles, while Polish uses a punctuation system based on strict syntactic rules, this discrepancy between the two systems is also relevant from a translational perspective. Indeed, correct transposition of meaning is also achieved through punctuation. The Constitution of the Italian Republic falls into the category of binding texts and therefore requires the translator to adopt maximum interpretative rigidity. The hypothesis is that, despite differing criteria for comma usage in the two languages, both the source text and the target text express the same meaning without significant deviations. Through examples drawn from the source text, the analysis aims to identify possible points of convergence between the Italian and Polish punctuation systems, as well as to highlight the irreconcilable differences that arise from the distinct concepts of punctuation in each language.Quanto pesa una virgola nel testo? Quanto vale l’aggiunta o l’omissione della virgola nella traduzione? Un diverso uso della punteggiatura può comportare differenze semantiche? La lettura parallela del testo della Costituzione della Repubblica Italiana e della sua traduzione polacca ci offrirà il punto di partenza per ulteriori riflessioni sul significato di questo elemento tanto labile. L’analisi comparativa verrà preceduta da brevi cenni sullo sviluppo dell’interpunzione in italiano e in polacco, nonché da osservazioni sugli usi diversi della punteggiatura in entrambe le lingue. Dal momento che l’interpunzione italiana è di tipo prosodico-sintattica, mentre il polacco opta per l’interpunzione basata su rigide regole sintattiche, quest’incongruenza dei sistemi di interpunzione è rilevante anche dal punto di vista traduttivo. Infatti, una corretta trasposizione del senso viene effettuata anche attraverso la punteggiatura. La Costituzione della Repubblica Italiana appartiene alla categoria dei testi vincolanti, perciò richiede dal traduttore la massima rigidità interpretativa. Si ipotizza che, nonostante diversi criteri di applicazione della virgola in entrambe le lingue, sia il testo originale che il testo tradotto esprimano lo stesso significato senza maggiori deviazioni di senso. Attraverso esempi tratti dal prototesto si individueranno possibili punti di incontro nel sistema di interpunzione italiano e polacco, nondimeno saranno evidenziate le differenze inconciliabili che derivano dalla diversa concezione della punteggiatura in ambedue le lingue

No full textThrough this article, we will try to demonstrate the importance of photography in the literary work of Patrick Modiano. Faithful to his autofictional universe, in Encre sympathique, the writer crystallizes the period of the German Occupation of France during the Second World War. In this novel, the narrator searches for traces of a missing woman whose identity is fragile like the author. Within this quest, photography becomes a crucial element in the narration of facts and in the conjuring up of an identity crisis. It is a narrative lubricant that ensures the entanglement of voices and the embedding of several stories, even several micro-biographies. These are often accompanied by authorial interventions which try to theorize about a philosophy of life. It also serves to deal with the loss of identity in highly shady spaces where real characters and people have been rampant. Thanks to the intervention of photography, the space becomes a philosophical entity in an autofictional horizon skillfully sealed by a person disillusioned with History.Nous tenterons à travers cet article de démontrer l’importance de la photographie dans l’œuvre de Patrick Modiano. Fidèle à son univers autofictionnel, l’écrivain dans Encre sympathique cristallise la période de l’Occupation allemande en France durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans une quête quasi policière le narrateur cherche les traces d’une femme disparue dont l’identité est fragile comme celle de l’auteur. À l’intérieur de cette quête, la photographie s’érige en un élément crucial à la narration des faits et à la conjuration d’une crise identitaire. Elle est un lubrifiant narratif qui assure l’enchevêtrement des voix et l’enchâssement de plusieurs histoires, voire plusieurs micro-biographies. Celles-ci sont souvent accompagnées d’interventions auctoriales qui essaient de théoriser sur une philosophie de la vie. Elle sert aussi à traiter la perte d’identité dans des espaces hautement interlopes où des personnages et des personnes réelles ont sévi. L’espace de fait n’est pas de trop ; il est grâce à l’intervention de la photographie une entité philosophique et non des moindres dans un horizon autofictionnel adroitement scellé par un déçu de l’Histoire
El espacio en Contra el viento de Ángeles Caso: entre realidad geográfica y construcción simbólica
No full textThis study focuses on the configuration of the narrative space in Against the Wind (2009) by Ángeles Caso. We first address theoretical reflections on the novelistic space and then focus on the nature and functions of this element in the novel, and its close relationship with the development of the protagonist and the narrative plot. In this context, we draw on Bakhtin’s theory of chronotope for the insights it provides into literary analysis, particularly the relationship between space and time within the narrative. To justify the symbolic dimensions of space in the novel and its connection with the real world, we will refer to Lefebvre’s theory (2013) and the concept of spatial polarities developed by many theorists such as Lotman. Space in the examined novel is not a passive or neutral element. Rather, it is a dynamic component, rich with meanings and symbols, directly connected to the outside world it references, which enhances the plausibility of the story and enables the reader to explore a context that appears recognizable.En el presente estudio, nos enfocaremos en la configuración que tiene el espacio en el universo narrativo de Contra el viento (2009) de Ángeles Caso. Para ello se abordará, en primer lugar, reflexiones teóricas acerca del espacio novelístico para, posteriormente, centrarnos en la naturaleza y las funciones de este elemento en la novela y su estrecha relación con el desarrollo de la protagonista y de la trama narrativa. Se tendrá en cuenta la teoría del cronotopo de Bajtín, dadas las posibilidades que brinda para el análisis literario al respeto de las relaciones entre el marco espacial y el temporal de una obra. Con el fin de justificar las dimensiones simbólicas del espacio en la novela en cuestión y su conexión con el mundo real, nos referiremos a la teoría de Lefebvre (2013) y las llamadas polaridades espaciales, desarrolladas por muchos teóricos, como es el caso de Lotman. El espacio en la novela, caso de estudio, no es un elemento pasivo, ni neutro sino un componente dinámico que está cargado de significaciones y símbolos y se vincula inmediatamente con el mundo exterior al que se refiere, lo que fomenta la verosimilitud de la historia narrada y permite al lector ahondar en un contexto que le resulta ser reconocible
Assessment of the Internal Consistency of Two Polish References in Detecting Short Stature and Obesity in Children and Adolescents
No full textIn paediatric practice, growth references are used by doctors and nurses to evaluate a child’s growth status. We present an assessment of the internal consistency of two Polish references in detecting short stature and obesity in children and adolescents. Key diagnostic thresholds, the 3rd percentile for height and the 95th for Body Mass Index (BMI), were selected for comparison. Percentiles were calculated for hypothetical heights 0.2 cm lower than the third percentile of specific references and 0.1 units lower than the 95th percentile of specific references, in the case of height and BMI references, respectively. The z-scores were calculated and converted to percentiles. MS Excel was used. Around the 3rd percentile of height and the 95th percentile of BMI, there is a discrepancy in the Warsaw growth reference for measured height and BMI, respectively, and the calculated percentile. In the case of the Polish 2010 and 2012 growth references, a hypothetical height 0.2 cm below the third percentile of height-for-age reference yielded percentiles below 3 for all ages in both sexes. The Polish 2010 and 2012 growth references for measurements 0.1 units below the obesity threshold yielded percentiles of 94.69–94.86 in boys and girls. The Polish 2010 and 2012 growth references provide consistent and coherent calculation results for the 3rd percentile of height and the 95th percentile of BMI for children and adolescents aged 3–18 years
Human Biology Research in Anthropological Review: 2025 Onwards Editorial and Polish Anthropological Society Perspectives
No full textHuman biology research in the 21st century takes on a whole new meaning with an improved range of methodological, ethical, and technological advancements. Human biologists working in diverse sub- and inter-disciplinary areas now have at their disposal access to more efficient technical toolkits than ever before, producing data that can be rapidly shared through open access platforms. However, we also face challenges with the ever-increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI), and continued ethical concerns around ‘helicopter research’ using human personal and tissue data in developing countries. Anthropological Review (AR), the flagship journal of the Polish Anthropological Society (PTA), is an open access journal with a long history of publishing inter-disciplinary human biology research and continued commitment to sharing high quality findings. In this piece, as PTA is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, and as the editorial board of AR with a new Editor-in-Chief, and the President of PTA, we outline the stance of AR on key issues in today’s human biology research. We focus on open access, early career researcher opportunities, AI, the need for multi-methodological approaches and inter-disciplinarity, and commitment to the application of ethical framework in human biology research featured in our journal.Badania nad biologią człowieka w XXI wieku nabierają zupełnie nowego znaczenia, dzięki wykorzystaniu postępów badawczych w obszarze metodologii, etyki czy technologii. Biolodzy zajmujący się badaniem człowieka zarówno w obszarze poszczególnych poddyscyplin, jak i z wykorzystaniem badań interdyscyplinarnych, mają teraz dostęp do najnowocześniejszego sprzętu laboratoryjnego oraz zestawów narzędzi technicznych i informatycznych. Umożliwiają one gromadzenie danych, które można szybko udostępniać za pośrednictwem platform o otwartym dostępie. Stajemy jednak również przed wyzwaniami związanymi ze stale rosnącą obecnością sztucznej inteligencji (AI) i ciągłymi obawami etycznymi dotyczącymi uprawiania nauki neukolonialnej z wykorzystaniem danych osobowych i tkankowych ludzi w krajach rozwijających się. „Anthropological Review” (AR), sztandarowe czasopismo Polskiego Towarzystwa Antropologicznego (PTA), to czasopismo o otwartym dostępie, z długą historią publikowania interdyscyplinarnych badań z zakresu biologii człowieka i stałym zaangażowaniem w udostępnianie wysokiej jakości wyników. W niniejszym artykule, jako redakcja AR z nowym redaktorem naczelnym, i porzewodniczącym PTA, przedstawiamy stanowisko AR w kluczowych kwestiach dotyczących współczesnych badań nad biologią człowieka. Cyfrowe formy wsparcia psychologicznego w dobie postpandemicznej: między technologią a relacją terapeutyczną
No full textThe article analyzes the development and functioning of online forms of psychological support, which gained particular significance during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It discusses various modalities—ranging from video therapy and chat-based counseling to self-help programs and AI-assisted tools. Attention is given to both the potential and the limitations of online therapy, with emphasis on ethical, legal, and technological issues. The analysis integrates a scholarly perspective with the author’s practical experience as a psychologist working online. The findings indicate that psychological support delivered via the Internet constitutes an essential component of the contemporary therapeutic landscape. Despite numerous advantages—such as increased accessibility and anonymity—these forms of support require continued reflection on ethical and legal grounds. Their effectiveness depends on the therapist’s competencies, the quality of the therapeutic relationship, and technological security.Artykuł analizuje rozwój i funkcjonowanie internetowych form wsparcia psychologicznego, które w sposób szczególny zyskały na znaczeniu w okresie pandemii COVID-19 i po jej zakończeniu. Omówiono ich różnorodne formy – od wideoterapii, przez czaty i programy samopomocowe, po narzędzia oparte na sztucznej inteligencji. Zwrócono uwagę zarówno na potencjał, jak i ograniczenia terapii prowadzonej online, wskazując na kwestie etyczne, prawne i technologiczne. Analiza łączy perspektywę naukową z doświadczeniami praktycznymi autorki jako psycholożki pracującej online. Analiza wskazuje, że wsparcie psychologiczne oferowane przez Internet stanowi ważny element współczesnego krajobrazu terapeutycznego. Pomimo licznych zalet – takich jak większa dostępność i anonimowość – formy te wymagają dalszej refleksji w kontekście etycznym i prawnym.
