Ex-Jesuit teachers in the activities and schools of the CNE
The article concerns the participation of the members of the dissolved Jesuit Order
in teaching the youth in the schools of The Commission of National Education. The
Polish historiography has been evaluating the ex-Jesuit teachers in many different ways –
often negatively. Despite the occurrence of few cases in which the ex-Jesuits resisted the
reforms, it should be noted that the vast majority of them joined the activity of the CNE
in the most difficult time of its work – when the legal and organisational basis of the new
school-system was being shaped, when there were problems with the proper assignment
of the pro-Jesuit scientific and educational materials, when new ideas were emerging, but
it was difficult to implement them due to the lack of tools such as handbooks or other
school materials, etc. The full background of the work carried out by the ex-Jesuit teachers
during the first ten years of the CNE existence includes their very hard financial situation
which often made them starving. The ex-Jesuits worked in almost all CNE units: in
the Commission’s headquarters, as members of the Elementary Books Society, inspectors
visiting district and regional schools, inspectors visiting parish schools in Lithuania,
rectors of school departments, school prorectors and prefects, school preachers, officers
at the Załuski Library. The largest group of ex-Jesuits working for the CNE consisted of
school teachers

Problems of The Commission of National Education in school curricula and history school-books at primary schools level between the years 1944 and 1989
The contents concerning foundation and activity of The Commission of National
Education in curricula and history school-books prepared for elementary schools in
the period of the People’s Republic of Poland were the main goal of presented article.
Between the years 1944 and 1989, the mentioned problems were present in curricula and
school-books contents, confirmed by the proper Minister of Education.
Because everything, what was going on at school area, had to be connected with
authorities’ ideology, curricula and school-books were full of Marxism and Leninism
ideology. In that period the issues of The Commission of National Education were
interpreted in accordance with proper ideology, either

Status lekarza w cesarstwie rzymskim : cywilna i wojskowa opieka medyczna
Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie. Wydział Humanistyczny. Instytut Historii. Rozprawa doktorska, promotor dr hab. prof. UP Marek Wilczyński.Głównym celem dysertacji ”Status lekarza w cesarstwie rzymskim.
Najważniejszą i najistotniejszą częścią pracy są rozdziały II „lατρός, medicus - opieka cywilna" i III „Medicus in valetudinario - opieka wojskowa" poświęcone bezpośrednio lekarzowi cywilnemu i wojskowemu. Rozdziały te to próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, kim lekarz powinien być. Poprzez opis hierarchii wśród medyków, stanu majątkowego, poziomu „wyedukowania” czy uwarunkowań prawnych starałam się określić status lekarza. Wszystko to funkcjonuje w korelacji z diametralnie różnymi wizerunkami medyka w literaturze greckiej i rzymskiej.
Prace Galena to z jednej strony komentarz do dzieł Hippokratesa, z drugiej ukoronowanie i zarazem zamknięcie całej epoki. Pomimo, iż teorie Galena są obecne w medycynie średniowiecznej, to badania krytyczne nad medycyną starożytną, szczególnie nad twórczością Hippokratesa i Galena rozpoczęto dopiero w XVIII wieku.
Często byli to dobrzy rzemieślnicy.
Pomimo iż lekarze cesarscy spełniali większość wytycznych Arystydesa: posiadali często duże majątki, wpływy polityczne, szacunek, pełnili rolę „szarych eminencji”, to w większości przypadków byli wyzwoleńcami. The aim of a dissertation "The physician status in the Roman Empire. Civilian and military medical care" is an attempt to determine the status of a doctor in the ancient Roman society. Both individual status in the social hierarchy and physicians as a group as well as the health care system were the starting point to create a hierarchy of the Roman physicians.
A juxtaposition was made: a doctor with a vocation as an ideal one and a doctor who chose this occupation by necessity or desire to make profits (far from ideal). The studies showed that large expectations of patients and conditions in which he worked have affected on determination of the importance and position of the physician in the society. Determinants were legal and material position of the Roman physicians, education and ethical side of a "profession".
Chronologically the dissertation focus on a period from the mid-first century BC to the fourth century A.D. However, earlier theories or medical schools, which had influenced later Roman medicine, are mentioned in the dissertation. I have deliberately omitted the late antiquity period, due to the fact, that late-antique sources, such as epigraphic artefacts, focuse more on providing information about the martyrdom of the physician, rather giving a title or position, which he held.
The work is divided into five chapters. Chapter I "The main rulebooks of medicine - medicine and philosophy" is an introduction to an ancient medicine in general. This section aimed to realize that an educated doctor who wanted to practice, contacted with an misunderstanding and underestimation of the patients. Patients have often chosen the doctor cheaper, nicer and more popular. The most important part of the dissertation are chapters II "Iatros, medicus - civil care" and III "Medicus in valetudinario - military care", both devoted directly to a civil and military doctor. The aim of these chapters are to answer to a question who a doctor should be. By a description of a hierarchy among medics assets, the level of "education" or law conditions I made an attempt to define the status of a doctor. The studies were made in correlation with radically different descriptions of doctor from Greek and Roman literature. I noted an idealized doctor presented by Ceslus and caricature medic presented in poet Martial's epigrams, in which the doctor has bee identified as a gravedigger. Chapter IV "Ars medendi - art therapy" is devoted to rules and ways of treating patient. Information about medications, surgical techniques, tools and diets used in the treatment are mentioned here. As well as an information about the methods of treatment in balneology centers. The effectiveness of treatment affected on a popularity and salary of a doctor, so as on the status of a doctor. The last part of the dissertation, Chapter V, consist of biographies of doctors. Due to the fragmentary sources doctors were presented as an individual, not as a group. The disproportion between the biographies is the result of the quantity and quality of information concerning concrete doctors. A large group of doctors came from the lower social strata. For this reason, we lack information on their activities. Often a lack the financial resources caused that neither families nor grateful patients could not afford to fund a tombstone or a thanksgiving monument informing about a position or achievements of the deceased. Due to this fact, reliable statistical surveys are difficult to made. I used prosopography mathod in this part of the dissertation, the dissertation should not be regarded as a prosopography study. I used this method only to create a list of 93 physicians practicing in Rome.
The main sources, on which I based my studies, are Corpus Hippocraticum and Opera Omnia by Galen. Works of the "Father of Medicine" have created the foundation for the "modem" art therapy. Works of Galen, on the one hand are a comment to the works of Hippocrates, on the other hand are closing the whole period. Although the theories of Galen are present in medieval medicine, are often criticized. The works of Hippocrates and Galen were reinterpretated in the eighteenth century. The value of Galen's works has been reduced, over the centuries, not only by the numerous translations but also because of the mistakes of copyists.
The most important aim of the dissertation was to answer the question - what was the status of the doctor? After examination of the sources, it became clear that both, the role and status of the physician are interlaced due to the expectations of the patient and their realization affect the social position of a doctor. To determine the actual status of the doctor in Roman society, attention should be payed on whether medical practitioners left his scientific works. Did medic made spectacular healings that brought him wealth and fame. Was he a good specialist, loyal to the principle "First do no harm", did he receive exorbitant fees, did he enjoyed the esteem and respect of his patients. Civilian and military doctors were good craftsmen. Among the soldiers, position of a doctor was highly evaluated. From the imperial perspective, a status of a military doctor was low. The opposite was the status of an imperial doctor. His career and social position stemmed mostly from favourable circumstances. Because he treated the most important people in the Imperium, he could affect their decisions, he has received numerous privileges and a higher salary.
Epigraphic sources form the main database of physicians titles, their origins and work. This is the best evidence of high social status, often local, which reached the specific doctor. But we must remember that the rich doctors could buy privileges, for example, the possibility of erecting the monument in the city. Most of the inscriptions are related to military doctors. This occurrence is not surprising. Legionary doctor had the opportunity to make a career and earn a quick social promotion. This work has brought major benefits due to its the official position. As military career, also a medic career was dependent on connections, origin, family and skills. Often in that order. Military doctor enjoyed more respect than civil doctor.
From the standpoint of this dissertation, the most important is the reconstruction the hierarchy of doctors, which helped to determine the status of the physician in Roman society. Doctors hierarchy and conclusions resulting therefrom, presented in the work, does not aspire to the only legitimate interpretation. This is the result of the analysis of various ancient sources. By analyzing the sources, we can conclude that most doctors belonged to the middle layer humiliores. A large group were also uneducated "doctors-sorcerers", which must arrange for the lowest social class - tenuiores. Although the imperial doctors fulfilled most of the guidelines Aristides: had often large fortunes, political influence, respect, acted as the "gray eminence", in most cases, were freedmen.
But the freedmen, as well as soldiers, they could not be counted for honestiores. For this reason, doctors working in Rome would fall to humiliores
Jesuits and The Commission of National Education in the Polish historiography of the 20th and the beginnings of the 21st century
The problematic aspects of research on relations between the Society of Jesus and The
Commission of National Education (KEN) undertaken in historical papers can be
analysed by taking into consideration three criteria: the origins of KEN connected with
the cassation of the Jesuit Order; the history of the assets after the order’s dissolution;
the problem of ex-Jesuits (not)participating in the process of the Polish education reform
implemented by KEN. The achievements of the Commission were usually remembered
on the anniversaries of its founding. At that time, numerous scientific and popular papers
familiarizing the society with the history of the Commission were prepared. The review
of these papers devoted to The Commission of National Education indicates that most
of them were created under the influence of ideology which was obligatory at that time.
Therefore the papers which are ideologically encumbered as well as such issues which
were not thoroughly researched like the ex-Jesuits’ participation in the work of the
Commission require re-evaluation
Changing role of industry in the economy in the V4 countries - a regional approach
The theme of the article is the changing role of industry in the economy of the countries of the Visegrad Group, further referred to as V4. The goal of the research is to delimit the regularities in terms of changes of the importance of industrial activity in the economy of the region in the conditions of moving from the industrial to post-industrial to information phase of the development and building of a knowledge-based economy. The analysis is based on the NUTS-2 regions of the V4 countries against the general changes in the European Union states, based on selected measurements of industrial potential, i.e. employment and gross value added of industry, as well as indicators of spatial concentration, structure and dynamics in industrial activity, with a special focus on those related to the knowledge-based economy, such as employment in technology and knowledge-intensive sectors. The analysis is dynamic and refers to the years 2000-2012. The research is based on the following methods: comparative analysis, explanation, quantitative analysis and cartographic analysis, all with a regional approach.
The analysis indicates the diminishing role of industry in the V4 countries compared to the other EU states. However, the participation of employment in industry is relatively high in comparison with the rest of the EU states. Concentration of industry occurs in the earlier developed areas of concentration, i.e. industrial districts. As a result, there is a need for a new interpretation of the regional policy in the V4 states, where more attention should be paid to the role of industry in shaping the economic structure.
