Observation of Microorganisms Causing Ground Biodeterioration with Scanning Electron Microscope
application/pdfGround is composed of soil and rock and is integral compartment of the environment. Mineral, organic components, and microorganisms are major solid components of the soil and rock. They profoundly affect the physicochemical and biological properties of terrestrial systems. Microorganisms have been playing an important part in a number of fundamental geological processes. Microorganisms promote weathering of rock to soils and swelling of soils, clogging of boreholes and irrigation systems, and biofouling in embankment dams. Microorganisms promote the biodeterioration by their enzymes. The paper involves the observation of microorganisms causing biodeterioration of ground with scanning electronic microscope.departmental bulletin pape
A Basic Study on the Residential District Planning from Viewpoint of Living Territories : About the Characteristic of the Living Territories Influenced by the Street's Form
application/pdfThis study thinks the life of people that is not consist by only functionally sufficiently. It is important to notice a psychological relief and a belonging sense. It searches these by the state of residential district of ramification streets, and it has a purpose of that it is possible to join to the deliberateness methodology of living environment to the future. Concrete it has what influence on the living territories by the material factor, which is the characteristic of residential district of ramification streets such as the street's form and with the investigation for the resident being clear. The research way finds the characteristic of the living territories to compare residential district of grid pattern streets with ramification streetsdepartmental bulletin pape
Analytical evaluation of crack initiation of steel members subjected to repeated axial force and bending under cumulative deformation in plastic range
application/pdfThe objective of this study is to establish damage criteria for steel members at crack initiation due to very low cycle large deformation under repeated axial force and bending in plastic range. It is found that, from analytical results using simple member model and finite element method, axial and lateral deformation vs. load relations well correspond to the results of the previously conducted experiment. A plastic strain per one cycle of stress-strain hysteresis at the critical section, which related to crack initiation, showed 9% to 18% in the case of incremental displacement amplitude loading and about 18% in the case of constant displacement amplitude loading. Cumulative plastic strain values at which a crack occurs are strongly dependent on repeated loading patterns rather than deformed length of the test specimen.departmental bulletin pape
Development of the system for checking attendance of the lecture at the university using the card reader
application/pdfDevelopment of the system for checking attendance of the lecture at the university using the card reader was demonstrated. The rate of checking attendance of the lecture was about 4 to 12 students per minute. The break time of lecture at the Hiroshima Institute of Technology was 10 minute. Therefore, it is possible to check about 40 students' attendance of the lecture for the break time. Also, the probability that check exactly attendance was about 50%. The real time system for checking attendance of the lectures was realized by using preliminary card reader system.departmental bulletin pape
What Should Be Taught in a Faculty of Engineering? -Multimedia in Technology and Language Learning-
application/pdfIt is reported that few university or college students in Japan have recently reviewed or prepared lessons, and to our surprise, even the fundamental studies which are of paramount importance to them. The authors made careful surveys to ascertain whether or not the same is true of our students. The former part of the paper is intended as a report on the survey made by Professor Yokose to find out how and how long they study by themselves,in the library or their own rooms, and so on,except at classes given by their teachers. The latter part of the paper is written by Professor Tsujiya on the effects of a self-study using computers and a web-based reading comprehension text (English Reading Series Level 1), which our English teachers developed in 2002,in order to motivate some lower-level learners and the students who failed Freshman English A. The author reports that a self-study using computers is very effective for them.departmental bulletin pape
Development of a 5-layer Channel Router for 3-D VLSI Design
application/pdfChannel routing is one of the important problems in VLSI layout design. Many channel routing problems have been researched, and one of them is for multilayer channels in which terminals of different nets exist on a column. This problem cannot be solved by the conventional algorithms, which are designed for multilayer channels in which terminals of the same net exist on a column. It is referred to as the 3-D channel routing problem and any method for this problem is discussed on the design speed. In the research of devices in which circuit elements are integrated in 3-D, small chips have been developed since late 1980's. In the layout design that is necessary to develop large-scale 3-D integrated circuits, development of a high-speed routing method is indispensable. In this paper, a fast 5-layer routing method for 3-D rectangular channels is proposed based on the greedy router and it is extended for 3-D irregular channels. The experimental results to evaluate the proposed method are also shown.departmental bulletin pape
Study on Evaluation of Slope Failure by Using Fractal Theory
application/pdfEverything which exists has fractal nature, and fractal dimension. It is thought that the fractal dimension becomes an index by which the alignment of river flow or debris flow is characterized, and becomes an evaluation method of slope failure. There are two methods to analysis the fractal dimension, the first is the measuring method by dividers and the second is box counting method by the subdivision of the square. This paper proposed using the fractal analysis by using the satellite remote sensing data that is square mesh data from the previously mentioned methods. The fractal nature evaluation was conducted for the area of Hiroshima under a heavy rain condition on June 29,1999. This paper compares and examines the soil testing results and the slope failure result.departmental bulletin pape
Reliability Assessment of a Reinforced Concrete Bridge Subjected to Seismic Ground Motion base upon Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis
application/pdfIn this paper, the relationship between an existing bridge reliability and unpredictable uncertainty of seismic loading is discussed by means of the Monte Carlo simulation technique. First, we carried out the simulation of seismic ground motion on the basis of the non-stationary process model characterized by not only evolutionary spectrum but also non-stationary phase. Second, nonlinear responses of the three span steel girder bridge with two reinforced concrete piers under simulated earthquakes were analyzed by use of general purpose computer program TDAP III. Third, the influence of uncertainty about both concrete strength and yield strength of reinforcement on responses of piers was quantitatively cleared. Finally, reliability indices of the bridge subjected to an assumed strong earthquake ground motion were evaluated by using the second moment method. Moreover, the effect of number of the simulation on reliability indices was numerically investigated.departmental bulletin pape
The Prediction of Slope Failure Occurrence by Remote Sensing
application/pdfThe slope failure induced by Hiroshima heavy rainfall on June 29,1999 took many human lives, ravaged houses, and brought great damage. Then, the disaster reminded us of the fact that slope failure may happen at any time. One of the important factors seems to be the amount of deposit soil of weathering granite soil. First, geotechnical engineering maps of the area were made based on the results of the multiple regression analysis, and the ground database was made on the satellite“ADEOS" data. Furthermore, the weathering classification data was used as the disaster information data found in subsurface geology map. We also tried to predict the amount of collapse soil on a natural slope and the amount of product soil at the time of the disaster by applying End area formula using longitudinal and cross section of the watercourse of the area.departmental bulletin pape
What Should Be Taught in a Faculty of Engineering?-A Curriculum Innovation-
application/pdfThe university students want to learn the most useful subjects for themselves through their university periods. But the students in most universities are forced by the authorities to take a lot of required subjects. 80 students can't make good choices by their wills,in spite of a wide presentation of elective subjects. In this paper we present the advantages of a curriculum on our department that increases the freedom of subjects. We pick out public qualifying examinations this time, and propose curriculum corresponding to the examinations.departmental bulletin pape
