    A Method to Measure Learning Effectiveness in the Follow-up Classes

    application/pdfIt is considered to be difficult to find the learning effect because it requires long duration and we generally do not know how to measure the effectiveness of learning. Due to the trend of shrinkage of young people to be enrolled in universities, we are inclined to accept a variety of students, which will make us to take special care to undergraduate students. Therefore, we decided to design the follow-up program for them. The follow-up program consists of two: one is the learning check testing system to find students to be taken care of as early as possible, and the other is to serve the special learning program called follow-up classes. In the follow-up classes, students, teachers, and peersupporters work in a collaborative style using the newly introduced adaptive online testing system. To check if the learning is effective or not in the follow-up classes, we introduce here a newly proposed method (progressive method) which measures the ratios of students relevant to follow-up participants. We consider that if the ratio is larger than 0.5, then the follow-up program was worked effectively. By investigating three classes using this newly developed method, we have found that the follow-up program worked effectively.departmental bulletin pape

    Learning Analytics: Trends of Taking Tests for Learning Check Testing and Follow-up Program Testing

    application/pdfDue to the growth of freshman students who were taught insufficiently in high schools, we have recently established the follow-up program system (FP system) aimed at helping students who need basic learning. The follow-up system consists of learning check testing (LCT), follow-up program testing (FPT), and collaborative work testing (CWT). Since the FP system was first introduced, four months have passed, and we have accumulated the testing results to some extent. In this paper, we show the results of learning analytics focused on the LCT and FPT trends. From the analytics, we have found that 1) class attendance ratios are extremely improved by introducing LCT, 2) students well understand the meaning and significance to the FP and LCT, 3) although some students are reluctant to attend the FP classes (FPC), some students eagerly accept the FPC and CWT, 3) students want what they need the knowledge to be used promptly such as those used in examinations, but not for future use, 4)departmental bulletin pape

    application/pdfDue to the shrinkage of high school students and growth of the number of acceptance to universities in Japan, almost all the high school students are to be enrolled to universities, which causes various educational difficulties in universities. Taking care of students who were taught insufficiently in high schools and junior high schools is one of them. The follow-up program is aimed at helping students who need basic learning and aimed at assisting teachers who have to engage in teaching a variety of students. The follow-up systems are recognized as a part of the follow-up program (FP), and consist of the learning check testing (LCT), follow-up program testing (FPT), and collaborative work testing (CWT). We have developed the FP using online testing systems. In the systems, many persons playing roles are involved, such as teachers, students, peer supporters, and item contributors. We adopted the item response theory (IRT) to evaluate students' learning skills accurately. It would be a good time to assess if the systems worked or not because we have now a one-semester experience. Thus, we took questionnaires to students, peer supporters, and advisors. As a result, we have found that 1) students accept LCT in a positive attitude, 2) students want to use CWT out of campus, 3) attendance rate is improved, and etc.departmental bulletin pape

    Seismic response behavior of multi-story NC braced frames

    application/pdfThe authors have proposed Z-type and anti-symmetric Z-type NC braced frames that reduce absolute acceleration response by accumulated elastic strain energy. The elastic strain is accumulated by incremental deformation due to elastic response. These frames show similar elasto-plastic seismic response behavior by plastic energy absorption of the NC braces to hysteric dampers. They are compared for single-span and single-story frames. Numerical analyses of eight-story, three-span frames with various NC brace arrangements are carried out to compare the seismic response behaviors of Z-type, anti-Z-type and X-type braced multi-story frames. Residual deformation in multi-story frames after an earthquake can be calculated based upon incremental deformation in each story.departmental bulletin pape

    application/pdfThe authors reached the conclusion from shaking table tests and seismic response analyses that anti-symmetric Z-type NC braced frames show seismic response reduction performance due to accumulated elastic strain energy based upon incremental torsional deformation. Static loading tests on the NC braced frames are carried out to estimate the incremental torsional deformation behavior in detail.
