Dame, Susan Blum’s latest book Ungrading: Why rating students undermines learning (and what to do instead) . Grading is a fundamental component of formalized schooling, and Blum asks the reader why this is true and what would happen if educators stopped grading. Ungrading is introduced as an alternative to grading. Furthermore, this review introduces Blum’s edited collection of 13 educators and their experiences with ungrading. Blum has organized the writings into three main divisions of ungrading: foundations and models, practices, and reflections. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of Blum’s argument for ungrading are examined.
Japanese Abstract: 本論は、人類学者で米・ノートルダム大学教授のSusan Blum氏が上梓した最新作「Ungrading: Why rating students undermines learning (and what to doinstead)／アングレーティング：学習者を評価することはなぜ学習を阻害するのか、そして評価の代わりに教育者がすべきこととは」（タイトル訳は書評者による）を紹介する。成績評価は正式な学校教育において基本的な要素だが、Blum氏は「なぜそれが行われているのか」ということと、「もし、教育者が成績評価をやめたとしたら何が起こるのか」ということを、読者に問いかけている。そして、Ungradingという手法は成績評価に変わるものとして紹介されている。この手法ついて私なりに考察を行った。さらに本論では、本書の中で紹介されているBlum氏が編纂した13人の教育者と、彼・彼女らのUngradingの経験についての事例もレビューする。Blum氏は、これらの論説においてUngradingを「基礎とモデル」「実践」「考察」という3 つの主要部門に整理しているので、レビューもそれに従った。そして本論のまとめとして、Blum氏のUngradingの論点の長所と短所についても検証する。書評departmental bulletin pape

この小論では、児童文学を総括的にまとめていく。「なぜ書くか」につながる児童文学に見られる要素や特徴を、作品分析や他との関連性を見つけたり、作者や児童文学研究者の想い、批評を参考にしたりして考察していく。そこには、子どもと大人が双方で引き合う児童文学を普遍的なものにしている要素があるのではないだろうか。さらには、本学の令和3 年度Children’s Literature（旧英語圏児童文学）の講義に参加した学生たちと作品を通して交わしてきた児童文学の意義や重要性、つまり「なぜ読むか」を提起していくことにする。読者からの視点でも児童文学の特徴をまとめていきたい。departmental bulletin pape

これまでの日本思想史研究では、近世前期の儒者は仏教に対して、批判的・敵対的だと見做されてきた。だが、山鹿素行・熊沢蕃山・伊藤仁斎の三者は、仏教の存在を容認する議論を展開している。これは、当時の儒者の仏教に対する姿勢について、彼らが違和感を持っていたためである。特に林羅山・山崎闇斎らの朱子学者は仏教への批判が厳しかった。素行ら三者は、儒教思想の面で朱子学と距離を置いている。つまり、素行らの朱子学批判が、仏教への議論にも反映していると考えられる。これまでの儒仏関係の研究では儒者を一括して儒教陣営として扱う傾向があったが、儒教内での思想の違いが仏教への議論にも関係しているのである。今後は、それぞれの儒者の儒教面での思想の違いを考慮することで、近世の儒仏

Numeral Expressions in Head Internal Relative Clauses

The pivotal relative clauses are Head External in the languages of the world, while quite many languages utilize Head Internal Relative Clauses in which Head is inside the TP of the relative clause. In order to explain Head Internal relative Clauses, we can utilize a theory of Grafts advocated by Riemsdijk, and show that Graft can well explain numeral expressions in Head Internal Relative Clauses.departmental bulletin pape
Writing and feedback in the EFL classroom: Providing effective feedback for Japanese university students
Get PDFThe aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of written corrective feedback for Japanese learners. The study focuses on explicit feedback and metalinguistic feedback, which were compared to determine which type of feedback would improve students’ writing most significantly. The participants are 36 Japanese university students, freshmen, whose English proficiency levels range from A2 to B1 on CEFR levels at an English grammar class. They are separated into two groups: a) explicit feedback group; and b) metalinguistic feedback
group. The result shows that the mean score for explicit feedback group is higher than that of metalinguistic feedback group in the second writing task. Moreover, the effect size is 0.4, which is very significant. The result indicates that explicit feedback is more effective than metalinguistic feedback for Japanese learners simply because explicit feedback would be more understandable than metalinguistic feedback.departmental bulletin pape
