ーアメリカ発大衆消費社会の成立前夜一

はじめに
本稿は、都市史からのアプローチによる戦後経済史の一つの試みである。大衆的 
な標準品が生産一流通一消費にわたって取 り 引きされる という、大衆消費社会が 日 
本全体で成立するのは高度成長期後半のことだった。それは、20 世紀初頭にアメ リ 
力で生まれた大衆消費社会が、第二次世界大戦後の先進国に普及 してい く 世界的過 
程の一環でもあった。しかし、核家族を基本とする大衆社会的生活の萌芽は戦前期 
の大都市ですでに生まれており、大衆文化の成立や「モダン都市」と呼ばれるよう 
な景観的な変化も顕著で、大都市の社会は「大衆消費社会の入り口」に立つところ 
まできていたともいわれる ［石井編, 2005:58-62、中川,1985、橋本, 2000:64、 
橋爪, 2003、佐藤,2007］。こうした変化は、産業革命期に成立 した都市下層社会 
を抱えた都市か らの展開 を意味 しており、サラリーマ ンや中小商工業者を 中心とす 
る 大衆的な社会が都市の 中 に形成 された。
戦時期にはこ う した都市的な消費や文化は抑圧され、と く に流通業は企業整備や 
配給統制の影響を強く 受けたが、復興期には生産における大量生産化と、医薬品な 
どの大衆的新商品の購入 •消費もみられる ようになっており ［石井編,2005 : 58- 
62、エコノミスト, 1999:8-11］、こうした都市社会の大衆化はいっそう進んだと 
みられる。本稿は、こう した大衆化の戦後の展開に焦点をあてながら、1950年 
代の都市の経済政策や産業構造、商工業の役割などの動向を検討する。考察の対象 
となる都市の単位としては大都市 (東京 •大阪)、六大都市、中核都市 と 地方都市

などがあるが、1 9 5 0年代以降は所得、流通、生産など多くの側面で東京・大阪 
のシェアは大きくなっていったから、さしあたりこれらの大都市を分析対象とする 
のが適当であろう。資料面においても、全国調査が開始する前の1 940年代末に 
先行して商業調査が行われている うえ、戦後初期 (1 950年代)にはむしろ大都 
市の方が全国 レベルよ り も調査は豊富である。
1.195 0年代の都市経済一流通を中心に一
1 9 5 0年代の都市経済の歴史的位置づけを、大衆消費社会に向けた動向を軸に 
概論しておこう。工業化による影響も含めて、都市経済の重要性の上昇を象徴的に 
示すのが流通の動向である。戦後に広域化や全国化が進んだこと で、物流の量的シ 
エアの上昇に止まらず結節点となった大都市の質的重要性は高まった ［山ロ, 
2009b］。都内のﾡ売業が全国に占めるシェアは1 9 5 2 年の 2 3 %から 1954年 
の2 9 % へと上昇し、反対に大阪のシェアは低下して両者の地位が逆転するに至っ 
た。高度成長期に入って以降の東京のシェア拡大は停滞気味であったが、1950 
年代前半の上昇分を大き く 失う こと はな く、全国的な経済成長に見合った拡大を続 
けていく のである。
しかし、こうした大都市の役割に対する流通史研究の関心はこれまで希薄であっ 
た。復興期から高度成長期にかけての時期の流通史を概観すると、以下のようにな 
る。まず、戦時期から復興期にかけてﾡ売業・小売業ともに強い統制下にあった 
流通業は、生産回復に伴う 1 9 5 0年代初頭の経済統制の解除により、商業復興と 
呼ばれる ような回復を開始 した ［石井編,2005:126］。経済成長が続く中で消費も 
戦前水準への回復を超えて拡大し、小売業、とりわけ百货店がめざましい復興を遂 
げた。この結果、昭和初期に問題となった百貨店問題、中小小売商の零細性や過当 
競争構造も再現 したため、これに対する政策的対応 と して195 5 年に成立 した第 
二次百貨店法、小売市場を規制する小売商業調整法の制定がみられた。しかし、と 
くに「ザル法」と呼ばれるほど極めて消極的な運用に止まった後者にみられるよう 
に ［石原,1994年:65］ 、消費市場の拡大によってこうした問題は深刻化しない 
まま推移していったのである。
そ う した中で、生産 ・消費の変化に較べる と195 0年代の流通業の変化は遅れ 
てお り、百货店 ・ 生協 ・ 購買所など戦前からの組織的経営の小売業の発展がみられ 
た程度であった。伝統的な対面販売や掛売、恣意的な価格といった習慣は消費者か 
ら敬遠され始めており、復興期に大量に開業した生業的商店は大衆消費と不適合を 
起こしつつあった。ただし、一部では「繁盛店」と 呼ばれる ような小売店の発展が

各地でみられた ［石原 ・ 矢作編, 2004 : 227-230］。こ う した繁盛店は、供給過剰 
傾向や商品サイクルの短期化といった大衆消費社会的要素をすでに反映してはい 
たが、基本的には問屋の弱体化を背景にした仕入れコス トの低下等を経営基盤と し 
てお り、中小小売商 という 経営形態が極限 ま で成長 を遂げた ものだったと考えられ 
る。この段階の小売部門では、大衆消費社会に向けた近代化の方向性はいぜんとし 
てみられなかった。これに対して、195 0年代末から 196 0年代初頭にかけて 
みられたスーパーマーケッ トという新業態の導入と、やや後のチェーンオペレーシ 
ヨ ンの普及によって、日本でも大量生産・大量消費に見合う大量流通の体制が成立 
していくことになる。
以上の推移を、本稿が分析対象と している都市経済との関係に即してまとめれば、 
商業復興と は統制経済の下で崩壊した大衆的な都市社会の再建に他ならず、これを 
さらにアメリカ に倣った大衆消費社会へ と展開さ せたのが小売業の革新であった 
ということ が できよう。言い換えれば、セルフサービスシステムやチェーンオペレ 
ーショ ンなどの海外からの移植技術を用いた革新が一気に展開するまで、大量生産 
と大量消費に適応する大量流通のあり方は確立しなかったのである。
このよ うに、19 5 0年代の都市社会の最大の特色、言い換えれば大衆消費社会 
との違いは、大量化に適応した流通の体制が未整備だった点にある。消費部門では 
生活水ﾡの回復に加えて大量生産商品や新商品の受容が始まっていたが、流通部門 
は195 0年前後の商業復興と 1 9 6 0年前後の小売業の革新に挟まれた状態で 
あった。したがって、この時期の流通には商業復興の延長線上で大衆化に対応する 
動きと、その限界から大量流通体制の形成に向けた模索の動きとが併存していたの 
である。
2.所得と消費の大衆化
終戦後の東京 におけ る 産業構造の展関 を人口 や所得の構成の変化 によってみる 
と、そこでは工業の比重の上昇とサービス部門の成長などを容易にみて取ることが 
できる ［東京都経済局,1956:5-8、東京都経済局,1961:8-13］。需要の中身と 
いう 点でいうな ら、戦時期に肥大化 した軍用 の需要は、敗戦に よ る 喪失は もちろん、 
占領期に一定の下支えを していた占領軍の需要も減少し、講話前後から軍需に頼ら 
ない経済が本格的に必要となった。代わって重要となってきたのが、重工業製品だ 
けでなく 消費財部門でも大量生産に よ っ て成長 してき た 工業部門 と、そ の労働者の 
需要である ［東京都経済局,1956 : 11］。大企業が下請の中小企業から調達する生 
産財に加えて、そこでの被雇用者の消費などが、直接的な需要として、さらには中

小企業部門の自営業者 ・ 被雇用者の所得となってその消費を拡大させる ことで、都 
内の市場の拡大をもたらしたと考えられる。
復興期から高度成長初期にかけての東京の所得や消費の動向は、以下のよ う にま 
とめられるであろう ［山口,2009b］。この時期の生産回復や経済成長をリードした 
工業部門や企業部門は、都内経済でもすでに主導的部門と して定着していたといえ 
る。しかし、1 9 5 0年代の経済成長の過程においては、工業や法人部門が一方的 
に成長して商業・サービス業や個人部門を圧倒していたわけではなく、経済拡大の 
恩恵は都内の各部門に幅広く行き渡っていた。その結果、拡大する生産に対応する 
消費という点で、近代部門の労働者と同様に、本格的な近代化以前の状態に止まっ 
ていた商業部門やサービス部門での就業者の需要もいぜんとして重要な位置を占 
めていたといえる。戦前の中小商工業問題や戦後の二重構造問題、さらに小売業に 
おける百貨店問題などにみられるよう に、商工業にわたる零細企業 ・ 業者の存在は 
社会政策的な観点から問題となることが多かったが、1 950年代には経済成長の 
思恵を受けてこうした部門の拡大が進んでおり、給料制の各種労働者と並んで業主 
層による大衆層が形成されていたのである。
工業と商業の関係の変化という問題については、工業にまでおよぶ問屋の主導性 
が両大戦間期に低下し、メーカーによる系列化などによって、高度成長期には流通 
の主導性がメーカーに移っていったというのが通説である。しかし、大衆化への対 
応の遅れていた1 9 5 0 年代の流通においては、戦時期と復興期に打撃を受けた間 
屋の弱体化が自覚されてはいたものの、卸売業はいぜんと して流通の要であった。
近世に三都経済 におけ る 流通の終着点であ っ た江戸に系譜を持つ東京は、近代に 
入ってからも「巨大な純消費地」とい う性格を持ち続けていた。昭和初期において 
も、東京市商工行政による中小商工業対策の中心が小売商であったことからも分か 
るように、東京経済は小売一消費が中心とみられていたのである ［東京市, 1930,:
「序説」］。戦時期には軍需工業化が商業部門の強制的転廃業を伴って進められたが、 
これも再生産に繋がらない物資の消費という意味では同様であり、軍需も含めて東 
京の消費都市的な性格はいぜんとして保たれていたといってよい。
おわりに
本稿は、1 9 5 0年代の東京を手がかりに、大量流通機構が整備 される 直前の大 
量生産社会という独特の時代に焦点を当てた考察を示してきた。この時期の大都市 
の経済動向としてしばしば指摘されるのは、東京の工業化、経済の東京集中化、大 
企業 と 中小企業それぞれの発展 と 格差の拡大な どである。これに加えて本稿が指摘

してきた諸事実は、零細経営の量的拡大という戦間期からのパターン ［山口, 
2006a : 36］の再生、工業化による側売部門の成長、部門横断的な個人所得の伸び 
とこれによる消費拡大の裏付け、などである。そこでは、戦前との連続性や戦後の 
革新性が領域に よってまだら に存在 していたが、都市での生産 と 消費の活動が高密 
度に行われるようになっていく と ともに、広域的な経済活動を結びつける都市の機 
能の役割が高まりつつあった。以下に、その内容を総括的に示しておきたい。
195 o 年代の流通においては、東京のシェア拡大とともに拠点化・ 中継地化が 
展開した。これは、戦時期に形成された工業が平和産業に転換し、その製品を東日 
本や海外に販売したことにもよるが、同時に、大衆消費社会に向けた消費の均一化 
と市場広域化に対応する拠点と して、東京の役割が拡大したことを示唆している。 
その背景には、生活水準上昇の地理的拡大によ る「社会的都市化」・「都市社会化」 
があり ［ロイレッケ, 2004］、地域問の消費の格差・個性が縮小していったことが 
あったと考えられる。戦後改革の影響による所得の平等化もこれを促進したといえ 
よう。
最後に、本稿で確認した1 9 5 0年代の都市の動向の意味を、高度成長期にかけ 
て形成される大衆消費社会に即して考察しておきたい。まず、結果的に大衆消費社 
会への形成に繋がっていく ことになるものの、1 9 5 0年代の東京経済の動向は、 
戦前と同様に流通部門や業主居の比重の大きい都市社会の再生と拡大でもあった。 
伝統的 な大衆都市経済の発展の戦後版 とい う べき、部門 によ って大量生産化 と 経営 
数拡大による成長が併存するという形の発展は、ある程度の裾の広さで所得と消費 
を拡大させ、本格的な高度成長が始まる前の成長を供給と需要の両面から支える大 
衆社会としての役割を果たしたとみられる。しかし、生産の効率化がいっそう進む 
と 同時に大衆市場の範囲が地方を含めて拡大 し、いわば社会的に大衆化が進む段階 
になると、供給部門、とくに流通部門での効率化の遅れによるアンバランスは生産 
性格差インフレを招いた。その中から、廉売店としてスーパーマーケットが普及. 
発展し、日本の大衆消費社会を完成させていく のである。このよ うに、日本におけ 
る大衆消費社会の完成は、1 9 5 0年代の都市における大衆社会の限界を突破する 
ところから達成されていったということができよう。
一方で、スーパーの全国チエーンへの発展が既存の卸売業を利用する形で進め ら 
れ、メーカーによる系列化が既存の御売業者を利用する形で広域的な大量生産製品 
を流通 させていったように ［佐藤, 1974: 153-168、孫,1992］、既存の卸売業に支 
えられた生産と消費という、19 5 0年代の都市経済でみられた性格はその後も受 
け継がれた。しかし、こうした「流通革命の不発 ［石井,2003年:229］」をもたら

した大企業による既存のﾡ売業の利用は、主と してその地方への進出を説明するも 
のであるといえよう。東京などの大都市における地域的集積の役割と、地方でのそ 
う した動向との総合的な理解については、今後の大衆消費社会研究の課題 と したい。

With the increasing complexity of LSI, logic-BIST is recently being accepted as industry-wide test 
solutions. After finding a faulty LSI under a BIST environment, we must determine the cause of failure in 
the faulty LSI within a small turn around time. A fast, low-cost and high-quality LSI product has been 
requested.  How do we diagnose the cause of failure of the faulty LSI in the nanometer technology?  
We show a fault diagnostic scenario after testing nanometer LSI by BIST. We also propose a new fault 
model for open faults in the nanometer LSI and present its novel diagnostic method.

Dielectric Properties of Multilayer BaTiO3-SrTiO3 Thin Film by Pulsed Laser Deposition*

We aimed at development of thin film capacitor alternatives to multi-layer ceramic capacitor 
fabricated by sintering. It is necessary to improvement of dielectric properties of BaTiO3 film up to 
bulk level. In this study, an artificial dielectric super lattices technique by pulsed laser deposition was 
performed. Multilayer BaTiO3-SrTiO3 thin films were prepared on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) or 
SrTiO3(111) by controlling the arrangement of A-site ion in nano-scale. The lattice of the films in the 
hetero-epitaxial interface at (111) plane was expanded by compressive strain due to lattice mismatch. 
Cycle of layer was evaluated from diffraction angle of satellite peak by equation for superlattice 
structure. Dielectric constant of the multilayer BaTiO3-SrTiO3 thin films enlarged at 
[BaTiO3(2.5nm)/SrTiO3(2.5nm)]20 was 550, compared to solid solution thin film of 390.

１．はじめに
 平成20年３月に新しい学習指導要領が公示されたが，
理科では他教科に先駆けて平成21年度より移行期のカ
リキュラムが実施される。愛媛大学教育学部附属小・中
学校では地域の先進校の役割を担うため新しいカリキュ
ラムを踏まえた授業実践を本年度から実施しており，理
科教育講座では新指導要領に対応した教材研究や授業実
践を附属教員と連携協力のもとに進めている。中学校新
指導要領解説１）では具体的な改善事項として，知識や
概念の定着を図り，科学的な考え方を育成するため，観
察・実験や自然体験，科学的な体験を一層充実する方向
で改善すると記されている。中学校２学年の“動物の仲
間”の項目では無脊椎動物の仲間が追加された。筆者ら
は学部・附属学校園共同研究の一環として無脊椎動物の
仲間の授業で実際に観察・実験を行い，体のつくりが脊
椎動物と異なることや共通点を理解させることをねらい
として，軟体動物コウイカの解剖実験の導入を試みた。
２．授業の事前指導
平成20年度，附属中学校では新教育課程の授業時数
を一部先行実施したため，単元の弾力的な運用が可能で
あった。そこで，３学年で実施する“生物の細胞と増え
方”について２学年で一部先行して学習した。その中で
遺伝子とDNAの存在について学習し，無脊椎動物のお
おまかな分類についても触れた。また，左右相称動物に
ついても遺伝子やDNAの存在と絡めて触れ，その代表
例としてウニやスカシカシパンなどの標本観察を行い，
動物の背－腹，右－左，前－後を確認した。これらの情
報をもとに，イカの体制について解剖実験を行うことと
し，授業前にイカの絵を描いてもらい，イカの体内に
はどのような器官があるか予想させた。授業ではワーク
シート（課題：コウイカの体のしくみはどうなっている
か？，目的：コウイカを解剖することで軟体動物のなか
でも，高度に進化したイカ類のしくみを理解する）を用
意した。
3．授業実践
平成21年３月３日４時限，２学年１クラス35名を９
班に分け，各班に１個体のコウイカを準備，バットにキッ
チンペーパーを敷き，コウイカを背側を上にして配布し
た。まず，ワークシートでイカの体内の様子を予想させ，
本授業の課題，目的，解剖の手順を説明し，外形の観察後，
解剖に着手した。墨汁嚢（墨袋）を内臓塊から剥離して
いくとき，組織をもちあげる者と薄膜を切開していく者
が協力している班はスムースに進行しているが，一人で
おそるおそる切開している班は進行が遅い。また，墨汁
が漏れ出ている班はその除去に手間取っていた。切開の
途中，墨袋を傷つけてしまい，墨汁があふれ出て，新し
いイカと交換する班もあった。生徒は消化系を取り出す
ことに集中しており，生殖腺については机間巡視で説明
するにとどめ，詳しい説明はしなかった。頭蓋軟骨を切
開し，脳を確認した後，口球－食道を切り出したが，周
りの肝臓を除くのに手間取り，食道を途中で切断してし
まう班もあった。一通り消化系が取り出され，醤油を口
球から注入し，食道－胃へと流れることを確認した班は
半数だった。さらに，眼球を観察，レンズの取り出しま

で進んだ班は１/３であった。最後にワークシートで解
剖して分かったことをまとめた。
授業では消化系の観察や口球から醤油をピペットで注
入して，食道－胃へ醤油が流れていくことを確認した。
また，星状神経節や脳の存在も確認した。手際よく解剖
出来たグループでは，さらに眼球からレンズを摘出する
班もあった。口のつくり，腕の吸盤などを観察する時間
的なゆとりはなかったが，コウイカの体制の特徴－脊椎
動物との共通点：左右相称動物，発達した感覚器や神経
系，消化器官，循環系がある；相違点：吸盤のある腕，
頭部－腹部の位置関係，殻の変化した甲について理解で
きたと思われる。材料については松山で冬季確実に手に
入る新鮮なイカということで，コウイカの解剖となった
が，秋期にはケンサキイカが手に入り，これは墨汁嚢や
肝臓が小さくて扱いやすい。マツイカ（スルメイカ）は
年中出回るが，やや鮮度が落ち，また，肝臓が大きく，
食道を取り出していくのに手間がかかる。口球，眼球，
吸盤の作りまでを観察するには２時間続きの授業が必要
である。
４．授業アンケート結果
授業前と授業後のアンケート結果は以下のようになっ
た。
知識・理解の観点から，“軟体動物（イカ）の体の中
の様子を知っている”についての５段階評価結果は授業
前平均で1.46，授業後4.33。“軟体動物（イカ）も私た
ちヒトと同じように左右相称であることを知っている”
については授業前平均2.36，授業後4.95であった。興味・
関心の観点から，“動物の体の構造について興味があっ
た”について授業前平均3.23，授業後4.08であった。“魚
や貝を食べるときに，体の様子がどうなっているのか考
えたことがある”については授業前平均3.23，授業後“魚
や貝などを食べるときに体の様子がどうなっているのか
考えながら食べてみようと思う”が4.08であった。授業
前後で知識・理解については評価が２段階上がっている
が，興味関心については１段階しか上がっていない。
解剖後の感想では，集約すると，体のしくみがよく
分かったと述べている生徒は26名，解剖は難しい５名，
解剖は面白い，またしてみたい４名となった。
５．コウイカ解剖の手順
授業実践を通して，改良した解剖の手順を記す。
実験器具など：バット，キッチンペーパー，ハサミ，
ピンセット，たこ糸，ピペット，醤油，ペーパータオル
①バットにキッチンペーパーを敷き，コウイカを背側
を上にして置く。コウイカの体は腕（足）－頭－胴から
できていること，頭胴の部分は色素班があって，皮下に
は硬い甲がある側（背側）と漏斗がみえる側（腹側）の
区別があり，腕も左右対になっていることを確認し，腹
側を上にして置き直す。
②胴を包む外套を中央で，先端（嘴部）へ向かって切
開し（ハサミの先端で墨汁嚢（墨袋）を傷つけないよう
に注意する。外套をもちあげながら切るとよい），左右
に広げる。このとき，外套が漏斗の付け根で外套軟骨器
（ボタン）と漏斗軟骨器（ボタン穴）でしっかり付着し
ていることが確認できる。また，ボタン穴すぐ上の外套
に放射状に走る星状神経節が確認できる（図１,２ a）。
③内臓中央を墨袋が縦に長く走っており，その末端は
直腸の末端（肛門）近くで直腸と結合するので，この直
腸と墨袋の末端部分をタコ糸などで結索する。この糸で

墨袋をもちあげながらその周囲の薄膜を切り，墨袋を丁
寧に剥離させていく。墨汁が漏れ出ているものも結索し，
墨汁を洗い流して解剖する。墨袋が破損している場合は
新しいものと交換する。
雌の場合は墨袋の上に１対の卵嚢腺・副卵嚢腺がある
ので（図１,２ b），まずこれを切除し（墨袋の左側に生
殖門－卵管がみえる。雄の場合は同じ場所に大きな精夾
腺がみえる。），次いで墨袋を剥離していく。
雄の場合は墨袋を先に剥離していく。
④生殖器官（卵巣－卵管，あるいは精巣－精夾嚢）を
外套から切り離す。
⑤１対の鰓とそれをつないでいる心臓を取り出す。
⑥これで，墨袋と直腸の付着した部分から左の方へ直
腸は離れていき，盲嚢－胃へとつながっているのが確認
できる。これらを周辺の薄膜から切り離す。食道は背側
を通っているので，漏斗下制筋（ボタン穴の上方，縦に
走る１対の筋肉）を切断し，腕－頭部－内臓（茶色の肝
臓部分）をもちあげ，外套からはがして，１回転させ，
これらの部分を上側にする（左右に開いている外套と直
腸－胃はそのまま）。こうすると胃から食道が肝臓表面
から徐々に頭に向かって沈み込んでいく様子を観察でき
るので，食道を肝臓から切り離していく（図３ a,b）。
⑦頭部には頭蓋軟骨があって，脳，足部，内臓の各神
経節を保護し，眼球を支持している。この軟骨を背側中
央で切断し，左右に開くと唾液腺と神経節の塊がみえる。
神経節を除き，口球を周囲から食道へ向かってはがして
いく（図３c）。これで消化系－墨袋，鰓－心臓，生殖器
官が頭胴部から取り出されたことになる。
　
解剖の参考には池田・稲葉（1971）2）の日本動物解剖
図説を主に用いた。また，廣瀬（2008）3）には循環系や
神経系が丁寧に示されており，スルメイカの解剖図もあ
る。時間があれば口球（唇，上顎，下顎，歯舌），眼球（軟
骨板で強化された強膜，瞳孔と虹彩，レンズ（水晶体），
硝子様液，網膜（視細胞は前を向いている），神経繊維），
吸盤（内側に角質の輪状支持組織（角質環）があり，こ
れはタコにはない）など個別に観察することも比較的容
易にできる。
６．おわりに
西川・鳩貝（2007）4）は小・中学校理科授業にお
ける動物解剖の現状について調査し，中学校で（教師
が）解剖を行わない理由について，生命尊重の立場から
（37.7%），視聴覚教材で代用できる（27.9%），教材入手
が困難（21.3%），カリキュラムにない（18.9%），自分
の拒否反応（16.4%），児童・生徒の拒否反応（11.5%）
を上位項目として挙げている。動物の構造理解に解剖は
必然なのか，生命尊重の立場からみて，なくてすむもの
なら敢えて導入しなくともよいのではということで上位
２項目がきているのだろう。また，解剖授業を実際に
行った後の生徒の感想では，嫌悪感（43.3%），構造理

解（33.3%），動物同情（22.5%）が上位項目となったと
し，動物解剖は中学生にとって受け入れにくい教材であ
ることは間違いないとしている。動物解剖に使用された
動物はマウス３，カエル57，フナ１，コイ17，その他
の魚類18，ミミズ２，ブタ内臓21，眼球６，ウシ内臓４，
眼球14で生体解剖が死体解剖よりやや多く，また，死
体利用では部分利用が多いと表記されていることから嫌
悪感や同情の感想が上位に来たように思われる。脊椎動
物の解剖，特に生体解剖は生命尊重や同情の意識が高く，
解剖に抵抗感が強くなるようである。新指導要領に無脊
椎動物が追加され，解説で解剖が勧められているので，
カリキュラム上，導入は可能となった。また，食用とし
て店頭に並ぶ無脊椎動物（死体）であれば生命尊重への
こだわりは軽減されるだろうし，同情といった感想はあ
まり出てこないだろう。イカのように脊椎動物の形から
は一見かけ離れている体を解剖することによって，構造
への興味関心や解剖技術習得をはかることができないだ
ろうか。もし，脊椎動物の解剖を望むなら，無脊椎動物
の解剖の後で実践すると拒否反応は少なくなるのではな
いだろうか。本授業では事前に左右相称動物の基本的な
体のつくりについて考えさせ，ウニ類のように一見左右
相称とは思えない動物を用いて体のつくりへの興味関心
を高め，ではイカはどうなのか，解剖してみようと進め
た。生徒の感想には単に気持ち悪いと述べた生徒が１名
あったが，今まで知らなかったことが知れてよかったと
も述べており，嫌悪感や同情を示すものはなかった。構
造の理解についての評価はかなり高かったが，もっと解
剖してみたいと意欲を示す生徒は４名とあまり多くはな
かった。魚屋さんや主婦が魚をさばく感覚で解剖に臨ん
だ生徒が多かったのかもしれず，生命の実感や生命の尊
重という目的からは遠い教材で，生徒に強く印象の残る
授業とするにはさらに工夫が必要であると実感された。

Though a cutaneous stimulus might be generated 
by friction from clothes, a method of objectively 
evaluating a dynamic cutaneous stimulus from a 
physiological respect has not yet been established. 
This study focuses on changes in skin temperature 
caused by rubbing four different textiles against 
the skin. Four different kinds of washcloth (cotton, 
ramie, silk, and nylon) available on the market 
were used in the experiment. Three types of skin 
temperature reaction were observed in response to 
the friction stimulation: Type 1 - Sudden rise, Type 2 - 
Delayed rise, Type 3 - Insignificant change. Increases 
in temperature were observed over time, and the 
accumulated temperature values were calculated as 
the Total Skin Temperature Increment (TSI). This 
value specifies the degree of friction stimulation 
reflecting the temperature rise of the skin. 
The relationship of this TSI value and a subjective 
value of Semantic Differential (SD) method was 
examined. A correlation between the four types of 
cotton samples and perceived pain of the participants 
who showed the Type 2 (Delayed rise) reaction was 
shown. The research method introduced in this 
study points to a possible new direction in objectively 
measuring cutaneous stimulus from a physiological 
aspect.

1. Introduction
One source of skin trouble is the kinetic friction 
caused between the skin and the surface of a 
fiber product. It is common knowledge that this 
can be considerably unpleasant. (1) The degree of 
unpleasantness can be vague and is extremely 
difficult to estimate quantitatively though a person 
can easily recognize it subjectively. In order to 
objectively evaluate such a sense of unpleasantness, 
physiological responses that change alongside 
the generation of the unpleasant sense can be 
used as a method of measurement. Brain waves, 
electrocardiograms and blood pressure can be used 
as general evaluation indices, but such physiological 
measurements themselves influence a subject’s sense 
of unpleasantness.
The focus of this research paper is on the biological 
reactions of the human body caused by friction 
stimulation. Skin temperature is measured by non-

contact thermography. Changing skin temperatures 
are influenced by autonomic nervous activity during 
friction stimulation to the skin. It is claimed that 
such skin temperature changes are an effective way 
to evaluate stimulation of the skin caused by friction 
with textiles, and that the method described in this 
paper can be used to assess such cutaneous textile 
stimulus.
2. Material and methods
2-1　Samples
Four kinds of washcloth available in the Japanese 
market were examined: cotton, ramie, silk and nylon 
(regular synthetic fiber or nylon/polyester). See Table 
1 for details of their characteristics.
2-2　Friction test
A ‘movability friction examination machine’ was 
used for the friction test. The washcloth sample is 
installed in the slider and friction is applied to a 5mm2 
area at a speed of 2,000 revolutions per minute. The 
friction test environment was 25±1℃ and 50±10%RH. 
The subjects were 45 healthy female students aged 20 
to 25 years old. The friction test site is on the skin on 
the inside part of the humerus. Before each test each 
subject rested for 30 minutes with their humerus 
uncovered. They then sat down at the examination 
machine as shown in Figure 1. The initial friction 
force load on the skin is measured with a strain 
measuring system that was initially adjusted to 10gf/
cm2 before the test began. The skin temperature 
before and after friction was applied was measured 
thermographically. The first thermograph was taken 
15 seconds immediately after the friction application 
and subsequent changes in skin temperature were 
monitored every 15 seconds.
2-3　Research of friction test feeling
After the skin friction test ended subjects were 
asked to complete the SD feeling investigation 
questionnaire. This has seven possible evaluations: 
±3: very, ±2: considerably, ±1: little, 0: neither. The 
terms used in the SD evaluation method are as 
follows: non-prickly-feeling, non-rough, itchy, painless, 
catchy, and comfortable.
2-4　Measuring the surface properties of the washcloth 
samples
A KES-FB4 automatic surface tester was used to 
measure the following surface characteristics: mean 
coefficient of friction (MIU); mean deviation of MIU 
(MMD); and, mean deviation of surface roughness 
(SMD). Compression values were measured with 
a KES-FB3 machine and bend values with a KES-
FB2 machine (all supplied by Kato Tech Co, Ltd). 
The surface characteristic values of each sample are 
shown in Table 2. The coefficient of friction, MIU, 
is largest in the silk sample, is similar in the cotton 
and ramie samples, and is smallest among the nylon 
samples.
3. Results and discussion

Heat images and temperature graphs showing the 
skin before and after friction are shown. The four 
heat images show the skin temperature one minute 
before and two minutes after friction is applied. 
The horizontal axis of the graph divides the skin 
temperature into six regions showing the ratio of each 
area in the subject over time. Three types of skin 
temperature change are shown in Figures 3-(a), (b),(c) 
and 4-(a),(b),(c). They are described in detail below.
3-1-1　Sudden rise（Type 1）
In Type 1 cases the temperature suddenly rises but 
soon returns to the resting skin temperature level. 
Twenty two out of 45 subjects show this pattern. 
Figure 2-1 shows temperature changes over time 
when friction is applied to cotton under the same 
conditions as the skin friction experiment. The 
temperature immediately rises with friction and 
falls when friction ceases. In this case, the rise of 
the surface temperature is thought to be the one of 
frictional heat origin. The sudden rise of Type 1 could 
be due to the influence of frictional heat that occurs 
between the skin and the various textiles.
 
3-1-2　Delayed rise（Type 2）
In the 18 Type 2 cases there is a gradual rise in 
skin temperature right after friction is applied, 
reaching a peak after two or three minutes. The 
highest temperature is then maintained and descends 
gradually. Moreover, the heat image shows that the 
rise in temperature extends beyond the friction area.

The  mechan i sm caus ing  the  r i se  in  sk in 
temperature can be considered as follows. When 
friction is applied the skin flushes. This originates 
in the production of the axon reflex in response to 
stimulation of the sensory nerves. Where the end of 
the afferent nerve of the spinal cord diverges afferent 
excitement caused by stimulation to the nerve endings 
bypasses the nerve centre, is transmitted from the 
nerve synapse to other nerves and a vasodilator 
reaction takes place. Flushing appears in and around 
the rubbed part of the skin 15 to 30 seconds after 
friction is applied. This causes a sense of pain in 
the C-afferent nerve in response to the cutaneous 
stimulus regardless of any excitation by chemical or 
mechanical means. 
The friction stimulation spreads to the nerve 
synapses causing vasopressor discharge from 
the nerve endings to the stimulated area. Once 
vasopressor are discharged cutaneous blood vessels 
are stimulated and the skin flushes. 2) Flushing 
extends to the surrounding skin through enlargement 
of the arterioles. It is possible that skin friction with 
textiles causes this kind of phenomenon. The pattern 
diagrams of the axon reflex in Figure 2-(b) show the 
skin of a subject a Type 2 temperature rise.
The rise of skin temperature in Type 2 corresponds 
to the skin flushing phenomenon by the axon reflex. 
It is possible that in Type 2 subjects the response of 
the sensory nerve is more acute than in Type 1 and 
friction causes subjects to flush more easily. 
3-1-3　Insignificant change（Type 3）
Five subjects showed little or no change in skin 
temperature before and after friction. It is possible 
that the initial friction load of 10gf/cm2 was too low to 
effect these subjects and the resulting frictional heat 
was small.

3-2　Calculation of Total Skin Temperature Increment
The total accumulation of rise in skin temperature 
as a result of washcloth friction was calculated as 
an index. Skin temperature was measured at ten 
different points in the friction area. (Fig.4)
3-3　Research of friction test feeling
Figure 6 shows the mean values for SD of all 
subjects. The results show that the order of perceived 
stimulation, from high to low, was nylon, ramie, silk 
and cotton. Nylon was perceived as being especially 
stimulating while cotton was not; silk and ramie were 
seen as similar. All samples were seen as both rough 
and hard but none were evaluated as itchy or painful. 
They were seen as suitable for washing one’s body.
Although the friction test revealed the order of 
stimulation as nylon, ramie, silk and cotton, the 
surface friction coefficient was in the order of silk, 
cotton, ramie and nylon. Therefore, it follows that the 
size of the surface friction coefficient of the washcloth 
is not reflected by the subjective evaluation of skin 
stimulation feeling.
3-4　Mechanism of skin temperature change by 
friction stimulation with a washcloth
There are three main factors affecting skin 
temperature  change result ing from fr ict ion 
stimulation by textiles: (1) Change of environmental 
temperature. (2) Frictional heat that occurs as a 
result of friction between a textile and the skin. (3) 
Skin vasodilator reaction by friction stimulation. 
Three types of skin temperature rise were observed 
with, for example, frictional heat being the main 
factor in the Type 1 pattern. The mean TSI value

for each subject in each sample and each Type was 
compared with the mechanics characteristic value 
of each sample. Table 2 shows the TSI value (subject 
average) and surface property value of each Type 
for every sample. In Type 1, silk has the highest 
coefficient of friction and surface coarseness, and the 
TSI value is the biggest. In contrast, nylon has the 
lowest surface value and lowest TSI value.
It is possible that for Type 1 subjects (who show 
a rapid rise in skin temperature) frictional heat 
is the main factor contributing to the dynamic 
characteristics of the textiles, and that such subjects 
are easily affected by surface characteristics such as 
coefficients of friction. Regarding the relatively little 
change in Type 3 subjects it is thought that the main 
factor in skin temperature change is frictional heat. 
But it is possible that for Type 3 subjects there is little 
rise in temperature3）and any frictional heat that does 
occur soon dissipates at low skin temperatures (less 
than 29℃ ). Initial skin temperatures are low and fri-
ction stimulation appears to have little influence on 
skin temperature through a vasodilatation reaction, 
therefore it is difficult to evaluate the effect of the 
textiles on skin temperature change.
However, for Type 2 subjects the expansion reaction 
(axon reflex) of the skin blood vessels are easily 
stimulated in comparison with Types 1 and 3. The rise 
in skin temperature is large and the vasodilatation 
reaction appears greater than just as a result of the 
effect of frictional heat between the textiles and skin. 
It is suggested that the subjects of Type 2 show a 
more sensitive nervous response and that they also 
report feeling more skin stimulation than the other 
subjects. 
3-5　Skin temperature rise by friction stimulation and 
correlation with subjective evaluation (SD score)
The correlation between SD scores provided by 
the subjective evaluation questionnaire and TSI 
values were compared. Table4 shows the correlation 
R values of the SD mean scores and all TSI scores of 
all subjects. R = 0.543 for a feeling of pain during the 
friction using cotton, and R = 0.535 for a feeling of 
pain in the silk sample.
As mentioned above, three types of response were 
found with regard to skin temperature change. It 
was thought that the main factor causing a skin 
temperature rise was different from Type 1 to Type 
2. Therefore, the SD scores were correlated with each 
skin temperature change type and the TSI values. 
Table4-(a) shows this correlation for the 13 Type 1 
subjects. R values were high in these, especially for 
the combination of comfort (R = 0.683) and cotton 
hardness (R= 0.679) and nylon.

In comparison with Type 1, the coefficient of 
correlation R values rise for each sample and each 
subjective evaluation for the 12 Type 2 subjects. For 
the cotton sample, for SD items (feeling of ‘roughness’, 
‘scratchiness’, ‘pain’, ‘catchy’) the R value was 
beyond 0.6, and for the feeling of ‘pain’ R exceeded 
0.7 showing that the correlation with the skin 
temperature rise was high. R was over 0.6 for ‘catchy’ 
and ‘painful’ for the cotton sample. The combined 
‘roughness’ and ‘itchy’ feelings from the SD items 
correlated highly with rises in skin temperature. In 
addition, the R value was over 0.6 for a feeling of ‘pain’ 
in the ramie and silk samples, and was over 0.6 for 
the feeling of ‘roughness’ in the nylon sample.
Figure 6 shows a straight line and scatter chart for 
the combination of cotton sample and pain feelings 
in Type 2 subjects where the correlation coefficient R 
value was the largest. The straight line is negative 
showing that the SD score is on a minus side 
compared with the TSI values.
4.　Conclusion
This paper has described how skin temperature 
changes can be used as a non-contact measurement 
when friction with various textiles is applied to the 
skin. The relation between the dynamic characteristic 
values of the amount of the change and textile goods 
and the subjectivity evaluation is examined. It is 
claimed that skin temperature can be used as a 
cutaneous textile stimulus evaluation index. Four 
kinds of washcloth (cotton, ramie, silk and nylon) 
currently on the market were used. The results are as 
follows.
1) The surface characteristic values (MIU, MMD, 
SMD) of four kinds of washcloth were measured 
with an automatic surface tester. The coefficient of 
friction and surface roughness were largest in silk.
2) Three types of skin temperature reaction were 
observed in response to the friction stimulation: 
Type 1 - Sudden rise. Type 2 - Delayed rise. Type 3 - 
Insignificant change.
3) It is thought that the rise of skin temperature in 
Type 2 originates in the skin vasodilator reaction 
(axon reflex) caused by friction stimulation.
4) An examination of the correlation between TSI 
values and the subjective evaluation value (SD 
score), showed there was some correlation between 
the cotton sample and a feeling of pain in a subject 
of Type 2 (delayed rise).

Children's Literature for Educational Purposes

English education in Japan
Although children's literature is a rich source of 
educational materials for many students learning 
English as a foreign language in Japan, it has not been 
given its just due by college researchers or middle 
and high school teachers. Most college researchers 
have often dismissed it in favor of classical works. 
In general, they have tended to use English classical 
works such as those of Shakespeare, Dickens and 
Jane Austen as textbooks for English literature 
courses as well as general English proficiency courses. 
Consequently, English lessons have often been painful 
for many students, and they have lost their motivation 
to improve their English. Middle and high school 
teachers are restricted by being required to use the 
limited number of textbooks authorized officially. 
 In the past, teachers traditionally used the 
grammar-translation method, stressing the importance 
of grammatical rules and the skill to translate English 
into Japanese. They trained students to memorize 
English in order to pass the entrance examination for 
universities. However, under the pressure of growing 
globalization, English education has been forced to 
change. The emphasis has move from grammatical 
knowledge of English to communicative skill. The 
Ministry of Education and Science announced last year 
that foreign language activities would be introduced 
into elementary schools as required activities, and this 
educational reform is currently underway.
Children's literature for extensive 
reading
The state of affairs described above has strengthened 
my belief that children's literature can be most helpful 
for students in developing their language skills and 
cultural consciousness.  First, it can provide a lot of 
enjoyable stories for extensive reading. Recently, we 
have seen a growing interest in children's literature 
due to the popularity of movies such as the Harry 
Potter series, The Lord of Rings trilogy and The 
Narnia Chronicles. The original books are available in 
most bookstores in Japan and are also easily obtained 
from the worldwide online bookstore, Amazon. Young 
English learners can spontaneously expand their 
'comfort zone' by reading books of their own choice 
(Ono, Day and Harsch, 2004). For example, when 
English learners read the following paragraph taken 
from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, they can 
follow and enjoy the story without having to consult 
the dictionary every other word:
Just as the frying-pan was nicely hissing, Peter and 
Mr Beaver came in with fish which Mr Beaver had 
already opened with his knife and cleaned out in the 
open air. You can think how good the new-caught 
fish smelled while they were frying and how the 
hungry children longed for them to be done and how 
very much hungrier still they had become before Mr 
Beaver said, "Now we're nearly ready." (82-3)

Exploring an imaginary world from children's 
literature, English learners can reinforce their 
motivation to learn more English. Enjoying English is 
key to this motivation.
Children's literature for developing 
cultural consciousness
In general, children's literature provides numerous 
imaginary worlds where students can experience 
different cultures and develop their cultural 
consciousness. For example, let's consider about The 
Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis I 
mentioned above.
Allusions to World War II
First, there is a distinct allusion to World War II in 
the opening part of the book:
Once there were four children whose names were 
Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy.  This story is about 
something that happened to them when they were 
sent away from London during the war because of 
the air-raids. (9)
The four children are sent away to the country 
house belonging to an elderly professor to avoid 
the Blitz.  According to Downing (2005, 29), 'At the 
beginning of World War II in September 1939, Lewis's 
household at the Kilns accepted children who were 
evacuated from London during the air raids.'  This 
provides the background for the story.  It does not 
seem unintentional to me that a wardrobe through 
which Lucy first enters into Narnia, includes 'war' in 
its spelling. Narnia is tyrannically occupied by the 
White Witch.  It is not a wonderland but an eternal 
winter world where Christmas never comes.  Tumnus, 
a faun who has helped Lucy to escape, is arrested by 
the secret police as punishment for this act. In order 
to evade the search by the White Witch, Mr. and Mrs. 
Beaver and three of the Pevensie children spend a 
night in a cave which is perhaps reminiscent of a 
trench or a shelter during the air-raids in London. 
Father Christmas announces that Christmas has 
come at last in Narnia, and gives presents to each of 
children, but his presents are special tools useful in 
battle. He hands 'a shield and a sword' (119) to Peter: 
'a bow and a quiver full of arrows and a little ivory 
horn,' (119) to Susan: 'a little bottle of what looked 
like glass and a small dagger.' (119) to Lucy.  As these 
presents portend, there later occur fierce battles, and 
a lot of people and animals are killed.  Perhaps these 
examples allude to the war in the real world, World 
War II. Given this difficult situation, Christian belief 
becomes more significant.
Allusions to Christianity
Early on, Edmund commits a sin. He eats 'Turkish 
Delight,' a cake enchanted by the Witch and becomes 
instantly strongly addicted to it. This episode clearly 
alludes to the sin of Adam and Eve who ate from 
the Forbidden Tree. As punishment for his sin, his 
life is likely to be forfeited by the White Witch who 
represents a servant of Satan. However, Aslan dies 
to save his life. Edmund deeply repents of his sin and 
redeems himself, and he bravely battles his enemies. 
Through Edmund's story, the reader (English learners) 
learns about one of the major Christian teachings, sin 
and redemption.  
Second, the lion Aslan represents Jesus Christ. 
Aslan's death on the Stone Table and his revival 
parallel Christ's Crucifixion and Resurrection. 
However, this central part of the story alluding 
to the miracle of Christian legends can be rather 
incomprehensible to many Japanese students.  One 
of my students said that she could not understand 
why Aslan should sacrifice his life for Edmund.  By 
contrast, the seasonal change directly appeals to 
Japanese students.  As Aslan comes to Narnia, spring 
also comes; in the woods, flowers are blooming, 
birds are singing, and brooks are babbling. The vivid

description of the spring also awakens great joy in our 
heart:
Close beside the path they were following, a bird 
suddenly chirped from the branch of a tree.  It 
was answered by the chuckle of another bird a 
little further off.  And then, as if that had been a 
signal, there was chattering and chirruping in every 
direction, and then a moment of full song, and 
within five minutes the whole wood was ringing 
with birds' music, …(132)
From a multicultural perspective, the friendship 
of a faun and Lucy is interesting. When Lucy first 
enters into Narnia, she meets Tumnus, a faun who is 
half goat and half man. He initially kidnaps her and 
intends to take her to the White Which, but he changes 
his mind and saves her life. Accordingly, Lucy and 
Tumnus become close friends.  According to Downing 
(2005), Lewis commented that this book started from 
his memory of a picture depicting a faun carrying an 
umbrella.  A faun is a creature in a Roman mythology. 
It is interesting to observe two cultures meet under 
one umbrella.
In a resent book, Planet Narnia, Michael Ward (2008) 
argues that seven books of the Narnia chronicles 
respectively correspond to the seven planets, Jupiter, 
Mars, Sol, Luna, Mercury, Venus, and Saturn. In 
this book he demonstrates that medieval cosmology 
provides the imaginative key to the seven books. 
According to his interpretation, the planets are the 
spiritual symbols of universal values.  For example, 
the first book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe 
corresponds a planet, Jupiter whose spiritual symbol is 
joviality. One example is observed in the scene where 
the seasonal change from winter to spring in the wood 
is joyfully described Joviality can be also observed in 
the scene where Aslan rises from the dead:
A mad chase began. Round and round the hill-
top he led them, now hopelessly out of their reach, 
now letting them almost catch his tail, now diving 
between them, now tossing them in the air with his 
huge and beautifully velveted paws and catching 
them again, and now stopping together in a happy 
laughing heap of fur and arms and legs. (176-7)
Ward's insightful theory helps students expand their 
perspectives academically and globally.
Just as a wardrobe is a gateway through which the 
Pevensie siblings enter into an imaginary world of 
Narnia, this book is a gateway through which English 
learners can enter into Western culture and develop 
their understanding of the core culture of Christianity. 
The collaboration of movies and 
children's literature
Lastly, I will comment on the relationships of the 
animation movie version of Howl's Moving Castle 
directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and the original work. 
The collaboration of movies and children's literature is 
creating new cultural amusement.
Howl's Moving Castle
Howl's Moving Castle is a young adult fantasy novel 
written by Diana Wynne Jones and first published in 
1986. The story is about a young woman named Sophie 
Hatter living in the town of Market Chipping in the 
magical kingdom of Ingary. As she is the eldest of three 
daughters, she resigns herself to a monotonous life, 
running the family hat shop. However, one day she is 
turned into an old woman by the Witch of the Waste. 
Sophie leaves the shop and gets a job as a cleaning lady 
for Wizard Howl, who lives in a moving castle powered 
by a fire demon, Calcifer. There is a rumor in Market 
Chipping that Howl eats the hearts of beautiful young 
women. Sophie makes a bargain with Calcifer: if 
Sophie can break the contract Howl and Calcifer have 
made, then Calcifer will return Sophie to her true 
form. In the end of the story, Sophie saves Howl by

giving him his heart back. By breaking their contract, 
Sophie can return to her true form. Howl releases 
Calcifer, restores other spelled persons to their true 
forms and finally asks Sophie to marry him.
Allusions to "Song" by John Donne
"Song" by John Donne is referred to twice in this 
novel and plays a very important role. It is used as a 
curse which the Witch of the Waste has put on Howl 
after he deserted her. For example, the first stanza is 
as follows;
"Go and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the Devil's foot.
Teach me to hear the mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
   And find
   What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.  (176)
When the seven impossible tasks mentioned here 
really have been carried out, the curse will be fulfilled. 
About the first task,  "Go and catch a falling star," 
Howl catches a falling star, Calcifer and gives it his 
heart to keep it alive. About the second one, "Get with 
child a mandrake root," one of the roots (mandrake) 
Sophie has planted sprouts two green leaves. About 
the third one, "Tell me where all past years are," Howl 
knows this as it is part of his magical training. About 
the fourth one, "Tell me … / Or who cleft the Devil's 
foot," perhaps Howl cleaves Clalcifer's foot because he 
has given his cleft heart to him. About the fifth, "Teach 
me to hear the mermaids singing," the mermaids come 
out of the sea and sing during Howl's fight with the 
Witch of the Waste in Porthaven.  About the sixth, 
"Teach me … / Or to keep off envy's stinging," Howl 
perhaps has learnt this because he has had a lot of 
bitter experience in his boyhood. About the last, "And 
find / What wind / Serves to advance an honest mind," 
Howl speaks honestly to Sophie about himself for the 
first time, transporting her by means of a magical 
wind. Though it is difficult to understand each line 
of Donne's poem and its relationship to the story, the 
reader tries to follow the development of the story 
more carefully, stimulated by the mysteries. Regarding 
the original poem by Donne, the speaker of the poem 
expresses his skepticism about the women's constancy. 
Moreover, some critics (Carey, 1981) point out that 
a deeper sense is hidden in this poem; Donne is 
expressing his spiritual sufferings about his conversion 
from Catholicism to Protestantism. Thus, the reader 
can develop their cultural understanding about 
Western culture by speculating on these allusions.
Film adaptation
Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greatest animated 
film directors in Japan. His animation films have won 
him high renown internationally. He adapted Howl's 
Moving Castle into an animation film of the same 
title, and released it in 2004. In the film Sophie is a 
protagonist who tries to live bravely though she has 
been turned into an ugly old woman by the Witch of 
the Waste. However, the film often differently develops 
from the original book. One of the differences is that 
the film puts more emphasis on war than the book. 
For example, Howl goes out secretly at night to fight 
battleships alone. He also firmly refuses to use his 
magic for the war, though he is requested to cooperate 
by the kings of two countries. This aspect of the film's 
plot perhaps comes from Miyazaki's political views as 
a pacifist. Importantly, both the film and the book is 
stressing the importance of human heart. This aspect 
is slightly reminiscent of Faust who has sold his soul to 
the devil in order to obtain supernatural power.  In the 
end, Faust is condemned to eternal punishment in hell, 
while Howl takes back his heart and becomes happy 
with Sophie.

Conclusion
In conclusion, children's literature is a rich source 
of materials for educational purposes but it is still 
uncultivated for them.  It is particularly useful for 
developing Japanese students' basic skills in English 
and their understanding of Western culture.  This 
summer, I'm expected to offer a teacher-training course 
to middle and high school teachers in my prefecture. 
Therefore, the next step is how to develop practical 
methods that teachers can use easily and effectively in 
their classrooms.
