    Rethinking of grammaticalization of Chinese modal markers : - The cases of yīnggāi and yào -

    application/pdfDue to the existence of deontic-epistemic polysemy in Chinese and non-existence of the polysemy in Japanese, the mapping correspondence of modal markers in Chinese and Japanese is normally 1 : 2. These competed form-meaning mappings in both languages are assumed to be interference on the Chinese learners'acquisition of Japanese modal markers. However, the result of a study regarding L2 acquisition indicated that the grammaticalization of Chinese modal markers differs in each modal marker. This study demonstrates the direction of grammaticalization : yīnggāi is deontic>epistemic, whereas yào is deontic/epistemic. This study also discusses that the result of Chinese learners' acquisition of Japanese modal markers and their ways of cognition reflecting the grammaticalization

    application/pdfThe main purpose of this study was to investigate the child-caring belief of the junior college students studying early childhood education course. To measure the child-caring belief, we used pre-school teacher efficacy (PTE). A PTE scale was administered to 166 junior college students in early childhood education course in order to examine development of April to October. The main results were as follows : 1) The PTE scale proved to have satisfactory internal consistency. 2) The PTE score had the high first graders who are inexperienced in the child-care training or the teaching practice compared with the second grader who is experienced in the child-care training or the teaching practice. This result reflects a first grader's strong hope that becomes childcare person immediately after entrance into a school

Clearly English has diffused into almost all aspects of Japanese society from ordinary conversation to governmental documents. In the process of borrowing, however, some distortion occurs, especially in terms of pronunciation, which causes great difficulties in learning natural, 'non-distorted'English. In this paper "how and why do English distortwords get borrowed in the Japanese language?" is discussed and some suggestions are made to improve this situation

    application/pdfSanuki Udon has been booming lately. Let's search the root of Sanuki-Udon. Udon is made from wheat We can't make `udon'without wheat. When did we begin to grow wheat? We have the word "gokoku" which means five cereals. They are rice, beans, millet, and barn yard millet. But we can't find wheat or barley in the "gokoku. But archeologists say that barley and wheat were grown in JOMON period. In KOJIKI, the famous myth, Sanuki is expressed by the name of the god of rice. KIBI-NO-Kuni was named after millet. AWA was named after millet of barnyard millet Barley wasn't grown much in Nara period. Without wheat we can't make `Udon. In order to get the root of Sanuki Udon, we need more archeological records, oral tradition and written records

Moreover, the opinion that government should be positively concerned with it has also spread. While there are various ways that government engages with it, the noncompulsory or voluntary ones which are influenced by "soft power" theory has attracted social attention in recent years.
