    Possible contribution of phosphate to the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease in dolphins

    香川大学Kagawa University博士(医学)This study aimed to investigate whether phosphate contributes to the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dolphins. Renal necropsy tissue of an aged captive dolphin was analyzed and in vitro experiments using cultured immortalized dolphin proximal tubular (DolKT-1) cells were performed. An older dolphin in captivity died of myocarditis, but its renal function was within the normal range until shortly before death. In renal necropsy tissue, obvious glomerular and tubulointerstitial changes were not observed except for renal infarction resulting from myocarditis. However, a computed tomography scan showed medullary calcification in reniculi. Micro area X-ray diffractometry and infrared absorption spectrometry showed that the calcified areas were primarily composed of hydroxyapatite. In vitro experiments showed that treatment with both phosphate and calciprotein particles (CPPs) resulted in cell viability loss and lactate dehydrogenase release in DolKT-1 cells. However, treatment with magnesium markedly attenuated this cellular injury induced by phosphate, but not by CPPs. Magnesium dose-dependently decreased CPP formation. These data support the hypothesis that continuous exposure to high phosphate contributes to the progression of CKD in captive-aged dolphins. Our data also suggest that phosphate-induced renal injury is mediated by CPP formation in dolphins, and it is attenuated by magnesium administration.doctoral thesi

    本研究は、19世紀のイギリスの小説家チャールズ・ディケンズの作品が、明治という近代化して間もない日本において受容される過程を、人称翻訳という観点から探究したものである。言語的にも文化的にも西洋の文学を取り入れる体制が整っていなかった明治という時代、原作を理解して日本語として再構築する際には、人称をいかに訳すかという大きな壁があった。描出話法など多彩な英語表現を駆使するディケンズ作品というテクストを翻訳する過程において、訳者たちは人称を自然な日本語として吸収することで新たな作品解釈の可能性を見出したと結論付けた。departmental bulletin pape

    Background: Chemotherapy in combination with anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody is considered a first-line treatment regimen for RAS wild-type and left-sided metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), whereas second-line treatment regimens have not yet been established. Few studies have prospectively evaluated second-line treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody after first-line anti-EGFR antibody therapy for RAS wild-type mCRC.Patients and methods: This non-randomized phase II trial investigated the clinical outcomes of second-line ramucirumab (RAM) plus fluorouracil, levofolinate, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) after first-line anti-EGFR antibody in combination with doublet or triplet regimen in patients with RAS wild-type mCRC. The primary endpoint was the 6-month progression-free survival (PFS) rate. The secondary endpoints were PFS, overall survival (OS), objective response rate (ORR), rate of early tumor shrinkage (ETS), and safety. We hypothesized a threshold 6-month PFS rate of 30% and an expected 6-month PFS rate of 45%. Treatment was considered effective if the lower limit of the 90% confidence interval (CI) of the 6-month PFS rate was >0.30.Results: Ninety-two patients were enrolled in the study. The primary tumor was located on the left side in 86 (95.6%) patients. Twenty (22.0%) patients had received triplet plus cetuximab as previous therapy. Six-month PFS rate was 58.2% (90% CI 49.3% to 66.2%) with a median PFS of 7.0 months (95% CI 5.7-7.6 months). Median OS was 23.6 months (95% CI 16.5-26.3 months). The ORR and ETS rate were 10.7% and 16.9%, respectively, in 83 patients with measurable lesions. The 6-month PFS rate was comparable between patients previously treated with doublet and triplet regimens; however, median PFS was longer for the doublet regimen (7.4 versus 6.4 months, P = 0.036).Conclusions: Our study demonstrated prospectively that RAM plus FOLFIRI is an effective second-line treatment after anti-EGFR antibody-containing first-line therapy in RAS wild-type and left-sided mCRC. Furthermore, the results were similar for patients who were previously treated with triplet regimen.journal articl

    Data Reuploadingと呼ばれる機械学習の手法を使って、ユニバーサルな光量子分類器の構成法を提案した。さらに、シリコン光集積回路で実装し、約94%の正答率で2次元データを分類することに成功した。We present an observation of quantum interference between position and momentum with photons. We prepared a superposition of position and momentum states by using slits, lenses, and an interferometer. The precise control and measuring of propagation time of the photon results in a clear quantum interference of 85% visibility. The generated quantum state is then used to verify the violation of particle propagation inequality proposed by Hofmann [Phys. Rev. A 96, 020101(R) (2017)], resulting in 5.9% below the statistically predicted lower bound. We believe that this result is a major step towards further developments in quantum theory, such as fundamental modifications to the interpretation of quantum mechanics.journal articl

    イネは世界三大穀物の一つで我々人類にとって極めて重要な植物だが、その病害抵抗性機構は未解明な部分が多いのが現状である。本研究は、植物ホルモンのジャスモン酸(JA)が同じ植物ホルモンのアブシジン酸(ABA)の合成を抑制することによってイネ白葉枯病に対する抵抗性を誘導するという、JA-ABAの拮抗的相互作用の分子メカニズムを世界で初めて解明した。Jasmonic acid (JA) regulates the production of several plant volatiles that are involved in plant defense mechanisms. In this study, we report that the JA-responsive volatile apocarotenoid, β-cyclocitral (β-cyc), negatively affects abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and induces a defense response against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), which causes bacterial blight in rice (Oryza sativa L.). JA-induced accumulation of β-cyc was regulated by OsJAZ8, a repressor of JA signaling in rice. Treatment with β-cyc induced resistance against Xoo and upregulated the expression of defense-related genes in rice. Conversely, the expression of ABA-responsive genes, including ABA-biosynthesis genes, was downregulated by JA and β-cyc treatment, resulting in a decrease in ABA levels in rice. β-cyc did not inhibit the ABA-dependent interactions between OsPYL/RCAR5 and OsPP2C49 in yeast cells. Furthermore, we revealed that JA-responsive rice carotenoid cleavage dioxygenase 4b (OsCCD4b) was localized in the chloroplast and produced β-cyc both in vitro and in planta. These results suggest that β-cyc plays an important role in the JA-mediated resistance against Xoo in rice.journal articl

    Report on the Kagawa University JICA 2022 Nikkei Training Project Utilizing Virtual Training

    The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) training project, the “Kagawa University JICA 2022 Nikkei Training Project” was successfully completed by the Faculty of Agriculture of Kagawa University and the International Office of Kagawa University. This is the fourth year that the program has been conducted, and the third year that it was conducted through virtual training activities because of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic. The project had been adapted in accordance with the feedback of participants in the 2020, and 2021 virtual programs. The 2022 program was also hosted online utilizing google classroom, WhatsApp, Zoom and email from October 14 to December 15, 2022.Project organizers in the Faculty of Agriculture and the International Office administered the program which was funded by JICA. The two program participants were entrepreneurs of Japanese descent from Argentina and Brazil, planning an expansion and reorganization, respectively, of their existing food businesses.This report outlines the program, planning and objectives, evaluation and feedback from the attendees, organizers, and JICA.departmental bulletin pape
