    A young married man, fresh out of the Marine Corps, has to decide whether it\u27s worth joining the Army Reserves just for a few extra bucks every month. For a Marine, that\u27s a heavy lift. Articles, stories, and other compositions in this archive were written by participants in the Mighty Pen Project. The program, developed by author David L. Robbins, and in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University and the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond, Virginia, offers veterans and their family members a customized twelve-week writing class, free of charge. The program encourages, supports, and assists participants in sharing their stories and experiences of military experience so both writer and audience may benefit

    Effectiveness of Immersive Virtual Reality Combined with Task-Specific Training on Hemiplegic Arm Function Following Stroke: A Single Case Series Study

    Motor recovery of the arm following a neurological injury is a common goal of the rehabilitation process for individuals impacted by the condition . Due to the long-term functional implications of impaired arm movement, individuals are often trained to use compensatory strategies to complete functional tasks without incorporating the weakened limb. While compensatory strategies offer stroke survivors the opportunity to regain a level of independence, such approaches fail to directly address the underlying causes of the disability (i.e., limited range of motion, decreased strength, poor coordination, motor planning difficulties) which can unfortunately result in long-term impairment and functional disability. Motor recovery following stroke is a multi-factorial process involving genetic, physiological, environmental, and therapeutic elements, yet this study addresses the utility of immersive Virtual Reality (VR) to encourage real-world hemiplegic arm activation. The intervention entailed the use of immersive VR, in conjunction with task-specific training, to address arm motor impairment and to measure the extent of hemiplegic arm activation in a real-world setting. The long-term objective of this project was to contribute to rehabilitation science by quantifying hemiplegic arm movement in settings outside of the clinic in response to immersive VR and task-specific training. Most investigations into the therapeutic use of immersive VR for stroke recovery have involved several weeks of VR exposure and primarily clinic-based measurement of motor performance.     With the increasing number of structured and unstructured data, obtaining reliable information effectively has become crucial. In the biomedical domain, extracting information from the scientific papers is crucial in order to stay up-to-date with accurate information, given the increased pace by which new research studies are published. This work focuses on identifying relationships between entities that are extracted from the abstracts and titles of biomedical research papers. In this work, we developed a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) based system to automatically identify relations between biomedical entities. We evaluate multiple open source Large Language Models (LLMs) and the number of examples (shots) required to improve the LLM\u27s results. We evaluate our methods using precision, recall and F-1 scores and compare our approach to traditional deep learning method using DeBERTa with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our results show that the Qwen-3 Reasoning model with RAG approach at 10 shots obtained the highest macro F1 than baseline approach and other LLMs using RAG at 10 shots. It performed best at 25 shots as there were least number of hallucinated label and high macro and micro score

    Place, Culture, and Care: A Socioecological Examination of Type 2 Diabetes among Hispanics in the U.S.

    Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects U.S. Hispanic populations. This dissertation examined whether structural determinants fundamentally drive T2D disparities among Hispanics, with attention to within-group racial heterogeneity. Methods: Three studies utilized nationally representative data. Study 1 examined neighborhood segregation and ethnic enclave residence associations with T2D using restricted NHANES data (2011-2018, n=5,056). Study 2 investigated acculturation and T2D associations using restricted NHANES data (2011-2018, n=4,540). Study 3 analyzed patient-provider racial/ethnic concordance and adequate diabetes care using MEPS data (2008-2021, n=17,138). Results: Structural factors demonstrated primacy across all studies. Neighborhood segregation (aOR=1.17, p\u3e0.05) and ethnic enclave residence showed no association with T2D after controlling for individual factors. Acculturation-T2D associations were fully attenuated by socioeconomic factors (aOR=1.13, 95% CI: 0.79-1.62). Patient-provider concordance showed no association with composite adequate care (aOR=0.97, 95% CI: 0.83-1.13), though process-specific benefits were found for minorities. Non-White Hispanics consistently demonstrated lower education (43.6% vs. 28.9% Discussion: Evidence indicates structural factors such as education, income, and healthcare access, drive T2D disparities among Hispanics.
