Knowing by Heart: Philosophical Dimensions of Humanistic Mathematics Education
No full textThis project seeks to revive interest in late twentieth century humanistic mathematics education (HME) so that its principles might cross the boundary of higher education and settle in corners of the K-12 math education space. In particular, HME’s theme of teaching math humanistically directs attention to features and phenomena that bear strongly on students’ daily classroom experiences. Personhood, agency, inquiry, meaning, environment, feelings, relationships: these elements invite a more thorough meditation and philosophical analysis. Though it is a largely philosophical endeavor, this project is enlivened by classroom vignettes and case studies that bring practical relevance to HME’s core principles. Chapters put HME in relation to different facets of math education and in so doing explore some guiding themes: the centrality of human relationships, the ontological implications of math problems, the nature of mathematical content, and the connection between school math and human values. These philosophical inquiries support efforts to teach mathematics humanistically and help justify the ethics of a more HME-infused math education practice
Fabrication, Characterization, and Simulation of Continuous Stationary Phase Gradients on Liquid Chromatography Columns
No full textLiquid Chromatography (LC) is increasingly being used for more complex samples that need to be effectively separated and quantitated. A gradient in the functionalization of the stationary phase allows for novel selectivity and better resolution compared to a uniform column. This work is focused on the improvement of the creation of these columns, the separation of difficult analytes on these columns, and adaptation of a retention simulator to study optimized dual gradient SPG shapes for the separations of large molecules.
In this work, C8 and C4 continuous stationary phase gradients were fabricated using destructive controlled rate infusion with trifluoroacetic acid. Thermogravimetric analysis along the length of the column established the gradient shape and the radial homogeneity of the stripped columns. This work has improved upon previous stationary phase gradient stripping procedures for added reliability.
The created columns were tested chromatographically for their stability, hydrophobicity and applicability to the separation of difficult analytes. To study the capabilities of the established stationary phase gradients, the C8 gradients were tested with nicotine analytes, and the C4 gradients were tested for protein and peptide separations.
Experimental chromatographic data obtained from uniform C4 testing established fitted Linear Solvent Strength model parameters. These values were then re-parameterized, improving the quality of the fit. Additionally, a strong canonic exchange column was parameterized with the same analytes to simulate an orthogonal retention mechanism. Based on these values, the effects of varied stationary phase gradient proportions were explored and optimal gradient shapes were found

Transformative Outcome of Correctional Education on Ex-offenders in Mzimba, Malawi
Get PDFPrison service offers correctional education programs to the incarcerated individuals as a vital component of crime fighting strategy. Although the role of correctional education is to fight crimes, relapse in criminal behaviour which results in the re-incarceration of ex-offenders continues to be a predicament, thereby questioning the relevance of correctional education programs after imprisonment. Therefore, this mixed methods study analysed the transformative outcome of correctional education programs on ex-offenders in Mzimba, Malawi using the empowerment theory. The study utilized questionnaires, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews as data collection tools, whereby quantitative data was analysed using SPSS version 20 while qualitative data were analysed thematically. Quantitative findings revealed that there is positive correlation between correctional education and successful re-integration of ex-offenders. On the other hand, the study found that criminal record negatively correlated with ex-offenders employability. Qualitative findings confirm that correctional education improves socio-economic status, behaviour and offender re-integration upon release. The study recommends that Malawi prison service should partner with other stakeholders in designing and implementing correctional education programs

“SOME VAGUE UTOPIA”: SEARCHING FOR URANIA
Get PDFDespite the global pendulum swing of gender trouble marked by the United States’ President’s declaration that there are only two sexes, activists have been rejecting assimilation (ie. defining equality as gay marriage or queer people in the military) within queer studies long before 2025. In the first half of the 20th century, a journal by the name of Urania (1916-1940), privately published and circulated to their home base in the United Kingdom and beyond, five editors (Esther Roper, Eva Gore-Booth, Jessey Wade, Dorothy Cornish, and Irene Clyde/Thomas Baty), challenged the gender binary and the resulting assumptions of heterosexual marriage. This thesis examines queer utopias in the juxtaposition of Urania’s politics against the backdrop of the rising biomedical model and sexological ideas, as well as first-wave feminism, in the early 1900s and interwar period. The editors rejected marriage and procreation via the elevation of celibacy, asexuality, and spinsterhood. In Urania’s heteroglossic form, I locate the collage-like impulse of José Muñoz’s methodology of “cruising” that moves from concrete prescriptions to affective yearning, always searching for pockets of queer utopianism. This includes the work of ace theorists redefining social relations beyond compulsory sexuality, Asexual Erotics by Ela Przybylo in particular. My thesis invites readers to turn to the journal Urania as an offering of community activism and a form of queer affection, the desire for friendships and care networks, but also for nurturing our relationship to dreaming for another world as an entity worthy of energy
