The Green Siblings: Exploring the Emerging Structure of Sustainable Finance
Starting early in the scientific discussion of sustainable finance, the lack of an all-encompassing definition for this object of consideration was a fact often cited by critics and advocates alike. With the rise of interest in the topic generated by both the political agenda of a green transformation and the banking supervision activities to protect banks against climate and ESG risks, the call for a definition gets even louder—generating the unfortunate side effect that some practitioners simply postpone the issue until it has “properly matured”, proven by a compact and universally accepted definition. After all, in conventional economics, there is no end of definitions, and in many branches of science, a problem lacking a clear definition is agreed to be a problem that cannot be solved.
In this chapter, we argue that the lack of definition is due to the simple fact that the roots of sustainable finance have produced not one but three trunks—being very different in size, appearance, and power. Developing from a movement to include ethics into business in a general way, the necessity to act against environmental destruction has called for more effective instruments, and the risks emerging from the said transformation require consequent action—both quite independently from any value conceptions a person or company may or may not have.
With the categorization into the three forms of value-driven, action-driven, and risk-driven sustainable finance, these very distinct and different approaches can be much better captured and described than with a one-size-fits-all definition, and it is much easier to capture their very different motivations, properties, stakeholders, and required measures.
This categorization is developed in this chapter, and while the concept can by no means be considered a complete roadmap to the new landscape of sustainable finance, it is intended as a robust basis for a new, more differentiated approach and as a farewell message to the futile search for a one-sentence definition
Sustainable ecosystems: Findings from the NaWerSys workshop series
Ecosystems have the promising potential to respond to economic but also environmental and social challenges, such as by enabling circular thinking, establishing fair supply chains, responsible collaborations, and ensuring resilience. In this report, we summarize findings from multiple data sources in the context of the NaWerSys workshop series which was held together with the INFORMATIK conference. The results are informed by experiences collected from full-day paper sessions in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and a world café-based discussion with 15 participants from different backgrounds, including sustainability, engineering, platform governance, product service systems, and artificial intelligence. We structured the results along with four main fields of action concerning the core, the value, the design, and the management of sustainable ecosystems. By jointly elaborating on the status quo and possible research directions, the findings aim to advance our understanding and boost the concept of sustainable ecosystems
Towards Efficient Battery Electric Bus Operations: A Novel Energy Forecasting Framework
As the adoption of battery electric buses (BEBs) in public transportation systems grows, the need for precise energy consumption forecasting becomes increasingly important. Accurate predictions are essential for optimizing routes, charging schedules, and ensuring adequate operational range. This paper introduces an innovative forecasting methodology that combines a propulsion and auxiliary energy model with a novel concept, the environment generator. This approach addresses the primary challenge in electric bus energy forecasting: estimating future environmental conditions, such as weather, passenger load, and traffic patterns, which significantly impact energy demand. The environment generator plays a crucial role by providing the energy models with realistic input data. This study validates various models with different levels of model complexity against real-world operational data from a case study of over one year with 16 electric buses in Göttingen, Germany. Our analysis thoroughly examines influencing factors on energy consumption, like altitude, temperature, passenger load, and driving patterns. In order to comprehensively understand energy demands under varying operational conditions, the methodology integrates data-driven models and physical simulations into a modular and highly accurate energy predictor. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in providing more accurate energy consumption forecasts, which is essential for efficient electric bus fleet management. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge in electric vehicle energy prediction and offers practical insights for transit authorities and operators in optimizing electric bus operations
Multimodal home-based rehabilitation intervention after discharge from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation (GeRas): study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial
Background
Geriatric rehabilitation aims to maintain the functional reserves of older adults in order to optimize social participation and prevent disability. After discharge from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation, patients are at high risk for decreased physical capacity, increased vulnerability, and limitations in mobility. As a result, ageing in place becomes uncertain for a plethora of patients after discharge from geriatric rehabilitation and effective strategies to prevent physical decline are required. Collaboration between different health-care providers is essential to improve continuity of care after discharge from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-professional home-based intervention program (GeRas) to improve functional capacity and social participation in older persons after discharge from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation.
Methods
The study is a multicenter, three-arm, randomized controlled trial with a three-month intervention period. Two hundred and seventy community-dwelling older people receiving inpatient geriatric rehabilitation will be randomized with a 1:1:1 ratio to one of the parallel intervention groups (conventional IG or tablet IG) or the control group (CG). The participants of both IGs will receive a home-based physical exercise program supervised by physical therapists, a nutritional recommendation by a physician, and social counseling by social workers of the health insurance company. The collaboration between the health-care providers and management of participants will be realized within a cloud environment based on a telemedicine platform and supported by multi-professional case conferences. The CG will receive usual care, two short handouts on general health-related topics, and facultative lifestyle counseling with general recommendations for a healthy diet and active ageing. The primary outcomes will be the physical capacity measured by the Short Physical Performance Battery and social participation assessed by the modified Reintegration to Normal Living Index, three months after discharge.
Discussion
The GeRas program is designed to improve the collaboration between health-care providers in the transition from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation to outpatient settings. Compared to usual care, it is expected to improve physical capacity and participation in geriatric patients after discharge from inpatient geriatric rehabilitation
Modeling of Motion Distortion Effect of Scanning LiDAR Sensors for Simulation-based Testing
Automated vehicles use light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors for environmental scanning. However, the relative motion between the scanning LiDAR sensor and objects leads to a distortion of the point cloud. This phenomenon is known as the motion distortion effect, significantly degrading the sensor’s object detection capabilities and generating false negative or false positive errors. In this work, we have introduced ray tracing-based deterministic and analytical approaches to model the motion distortion effect on the scanning LiDAR sensor’s performance for simulation-based testing. In addition, we have performed dynamic test drives at a proving ground to compare real LiDAR data with the motion distortion effect simulation data. The real-world scenarios, the environmental conditions, the digital twin of the scenery, and the object of interest (OOI) are replicated in the virtual environment of commercial software to obtain the synthetic LiDAR data. The real and the virtual test drives are compared frame by frame to validate the motion distortion effect modeling. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), the occupied cell ratio (OCR), and the Barons cross-correlation coefficient (BCC) are used to quantify the correlation between the virtual and the real LiDAR point cloud data. The results show that the deterministic approach matches the real measurements better than the analytical approach for the scenarios in which the yaw rate of the ego vehicle changes rapidly
Bewegen und Stärken: Gesundheitsförderung in der Alltagsbegleitung (BeStärken+) – Projektvorstellung
Hintergrund:
In Deutschland leben 5 Mio.
