Steering Feedback in Dynamic Driving Simulators: The Influence of Steering Wheel Vibration and Vehicle Motion Frequency

    No full text
The validity of the subjective evaluation of steering feedback in driving simulators is crucial for modern vehicle development. Although there are established objective steering characteristics for the assessment of both stationary and dynamic feedback behaviour, factors such as steering wheel vibrations and vehicle body motion, particularly in high-frequency ranges, present challenges in simulator fidelity. This work investigates the influence of steering wheel vibration and vehicle body motion frequency content on the subjective evaluation of steering feedback during closed-loop driving in a dynamic driving simulator. A controlled subject study with 30 participants consisting of a back-to-back comparison of a reference vehicle with an electrical power steering system on a country road and three variants of its virtual representation on a dynamic driving simulator was performed. Subjective evaluation focused on the representation of road feedback in comparison to the reference vehicle. The statistical analysis of subjective results show that there is a significant influence of the frequency content of both steering wheel torque and vehicle motion on the subjective evaluation of steering feedback in a dynamic driving simulator. The results suggest an influence of frequency content on the subjective evaluation quality of steering feedback characteristics that are not associated with the dynamic feedback behaviour in the context of established performance indicators

Beyond Sensors: A Rule-Based Approach for Cost-Effective Visitor Guidance

    No full text
Tourism is an important economic driver for numerous regions, attracting more than one billion visitors annually. While economically significant, excessive numbers of visitors lead to local overcrowding, which negatively impacts visitors’ experience and safety, and causes environmental harm. This paper proposes a practical approach to empowering destination management organizations (DMOs) to manage tourist flows. We advocate for a rule-based approach that models visitor occupancy based on easily understandable influence factors like weather and date. As a central component, an ontology-guided knowledge graph ensures compatibility with diverse touristic data models and allows seamless integration into existing infrastructures. By digitizing DMOs’ experiential knowledge, we facilitate the implementation of lean and cost-effective visitor guidance. We demonstrate our approach by implementing two applications for two different use cases. The results of our qualitative evaluation reveal the compelling potential for rule-based occupancy modeling approaches serving as a baseline for future visitor management systems

    Agile Methods of Performance

    No full text

    No full text
Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF) addresses sensor performance limitations and deep learning-based object detection insufficiencies to ensure the intended functionality of Automated Driving Systems (ADS). This paper presents a methodology examining the adaptability and performance evaluation of the 3D object detection methods on a LiDAR point cloud dataset generated by simulating a SOTIF-related Use Case. The major contributions of this paper include defining and modeling a SOTIF-related Use Case with 21 diverse weather conditions and generating a LiDAR point cloud dataset suitable for application of 3D object detection methods. The dataset consists of 547 frames, encompassing clear, cloudy, rainy weather conditions, corresponding to different times of the day, including noon, sunset, and night. Employing MMDetection3D and OpenPCDET toolkits, the performance of State-of-the-Art (SOTA) 3D object detection methods is evaluated and compared by testing the pre-trained Deep Lea rning (DL) models on the generated dataset using Average Precision (AP) and Recall metrics

Vehicle-to-X Service Provision for various Modes of e-Transportation with Consideration of the Influence on Lithium-Ion Battery Utilization

    No full text
The electrification of transportation modes such as cars, buses, and boats offers the potential of providing vehicle-to-X services during idle times. Pools of vehicles can provide balancing power, trade on the electricity market, or be used for load peak shaving. In this work, the usage patterns of electric cars, electric buses, and electric boats are investigated, and the provision of vehicle-to-X with these vehicles is simulated using an open-source simulation tool. A data analysis and a vehicle usage pattern assessment show that especially private electric cars behave predictably at night. It also reveals that the vehicle-to-X availability varies over the week for all vehicle types and is highest at night for cars and buses. During the day on weekdays, private cars are available for vehicle-to-X 30 to 70% of the time, the analyzed buses 5 to 50% of the time, and the availability of the boats depends on their primary use as ferries or private boats. If the three transportation modes provide vehicle-to-X during idle times, the equivalent full cycles that the lithium-ion batteries complete increase at different rates depending on the vehicle pool size, while the mean charging rates decrease. Furthermore, an exemplary aging analysis shows that the additional load of vehicle-to-X provision slightly increases the capacity loss of the car batteries compared to a paused unidirectional charging strategy

Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors are increasingly applied to automated driving vehicles. Microelectromechanical systems are an established technology for making LiDAR sensors cost-effective and mechanically robust for automotive applications. These sensors scan their environment using a pulsed laser to record a point cloud. The scanning process leads in the point cloud to a distortion of objects with a relative velocity to the sensor. The consecutive generation and processing of points offers the opportunity to enrich the measured object data from the LiDAR sensors with velocity information by extracting information with the help of machine learning, without the need for object tracking. Turning it into a socalled 4D-LiDAR. This allows object detection, object tracking, and sensor data fusion based on LiDAR sensor data to be optimized. Moreover, this affects all overlying levels of autonomous driving functions or advanced driver assistance systems. However, since such sensor-specific effects are rarely available in public datasets and the velocities of target objects are not included as ground truth in these datasets, it makes sense to enrich the limited real-world data with synthetic data. Therefore, this paper discusses how such datasets can be created and combined to efficiently predict velocities on realworld data using the authors' novel method dubbed VeloPoints

Enhancing NLP-Based Educational Assessment: A Node-Based Graph Approach for Analyzing Freeform Student Texts

    No full text
This paper introduces a software tool designed to elevate the assessment of student-submitted freeform text through a node-based graph approach leveraging large language models and customizable natural language processing (NLP) techniques. It combines directed feedback for students with a scoring system to provide a comprehensive understanding of the submitted responses. The node-based approach further allows educators to create tailored assignments with reusable evaluation strategies. This tool aims to scale up individualized feedback efficiently, addressing the challenges posed by large student numbers, thus alleviating the time investment of educators. This capability is particularly vital in scenarios where manual evaluation of numerous freeform submissions is impractical or unfeasible. This paper focuses on the software’s architecture and the integration of nodebased NLP practices in freeform text analysis

    No full text
