From professional vocabularies to the language part of work

    No full text
In this article, I give a historical overview of scientific approaches to language use at work. While early studies that were carried out since the nineteenth century first by laypersons and then by linguists (lexicologists, terminologists, and specialists of professional discourse) focused on the use of specific words at work, a new avenue for exploration was introduced in the 1980s by the network ‘Language and work’ (Langage et travail), which proposed an ethnographic, interactional, and interdisciplinary perspective. Based on fieldwork carried out in collaboration with the members of this network and with ergonomists, I was able to propose the concept of ‘the language part of work’ (la part langagière du travail). This concept describes the spoken and written language that characterise actual work practices, which can be described from a micro-level perspective by means of observations of specific workplaces as well as from a macro-level perspective regarding general socio-linguistic processes

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text

The Role of Metal Additive Manufacturing in a Circular Economy

    No full text
This paper provides an overview and examples of the potential, but also the challenges of Metal Additive Manufacturing in the future Circular Economy paradigm. The Circular Economy, aimed at reducing resource consumption, waste generation, and the overall carbon footprint of our industries, presents significant challenges to traditional, linear production systems. In this context, Additive Manufacturing emerges as a highly flexible technology with the potential to overcome many of these hurdles: The ability to reduce material usage through optimized lightweight and functional designs, the use of recycled materials, Additive Manufacturing-based repair and remanufacturing of tools and products or the optimization of production through hybrid manufacturing approaches (e.g. combinations of subtractive and additive manufacturing) are just a few examples. However, the lack of automated and digitalized production processes, complex process chains with potential health and safety concerns, and high demands on material and component qualification still pose significant hurdles to the widespread adoption of Metal Additive Manufacturing in the Circular Economy framework. In addition, the Circular Economy alone does not necessarily mean a lower carbon footprint over the entire product life cycle. On the contrary, depending on the specific process used, the carbon footprint of metal additive part production is often higher than in conventional manufacturing scenarios due to the high energy requirements of the additive process and long production times. Therefore, in this study, a comprehensive literature review is performed to outline the potential of Additive Manufacturing for Circular Economy principles, providing several beneficial examples of the so-called “R-strategies” covered with the help of Additive Manufacturing. In addition, an outlook is given on the development of new technologies to increase the potential of Additive Manufacturing to make an important contribution to circular production scenarios

The road not taken: Representing expert knowledge for route similarities in sustainable tourism using machine learning

    No full text
As recreational tourism in rural areas rises in popularity, overtourism, and crowding pose growing challenges, impacting both society and the environment. To support sustainable smart tourism, an information system for visitor management offers a valuable approach. A significant challenge in this context is the identification of suitable alternatives to congested areas. This paper proposes a method to calculate route similarities with distance-based algorithms and machine learning models using descriptive data to redirect visitors to less-crowded paths. A case study in a nature park validates the approach, using real-world hiking data from an online outdoor platform. Expert surveys on route similarity are used to train the models and evaluate the results. Machine learning significantly outperforms traditional similarity algorithms, achieving up to 117% higher R2 values (0.448 vs. 0.206), 26% lower MSE values (0.530 vs. 0.719), and 40% higher Spearman correlations (0.699 vs. 0.498). The random forest regression model yields the best results. This research provides a foundation for future efforts to enhance sustainable tourism by offering a data-driven approach to identifying alternative routes that align with visitor preferences

Further Development of an OpenFOAM LT-PEMFC Toolbox and Its Validation on an Automotive Fuel Cell Design

    No full text
Over the past two decades, several add-on modules for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software focusing on modelling electrochemical processes and two-phase effects within fuel cells have been described in the literature. Most of these models are based on custom-written code that is not openly accessible to everyone. Furthermore, several commercial CFD codes offer specific modules for modelling fuel cells. Here, code modification is difficult to achieve. This work analyses and further develops the PEMFC toolbox of Kone et al. for use in OpenFOAM to simulate low temperature (LT-)PEM fuel cells. This model is freely available under the GNU GPLv3 licence. The present work focuses on enhanced physical and electrochemical modelling and improved user-friendliness. The major improvements compared to the original toolbox will be detailed in the article, together with the first results obtained. The improved PEMFC toolbox is validated using experimental data from an automotive fuel cell stack design. Furthermore, these results are compared to the original Kone model, and a commercially available CFD model. The improved toolbox reproduces both the experimentally measured polarisation curve and the current density distribution quite accurately, producing results that are fairly comparable to the more sophisticated commercial model

Farm Products in Rural Tourism: Insights from Farm Holiday Providers in the Allgäu Region in Germany

    No full text
Culinary tourism and regional farm products have gained prominence, driven by growing demand for authentic, high-quality food. For farmers, selling such products provides a vital secondary income alongside agriculture, often complemented by offering farm holidays. This study, based on a survey of 52 farms, 33 of which offered farm products, investigates the role of farm products in the business models of farm holiday providers in the Allgäu region, Bavaria. It highlights the rising significance of culinary tourism and regional products as supplementary income streams and diversification strategies supporting rural economies. Results of the study indicate that a farms product variety is mainly driven by the farms main revenue streams, e.g. dairy and meat products. Sales and communication strategies of the farms primarily rely on direct marketing to guests and walk-in customers, often supported through farm websites or brochures. Limited resources constrain broader marketing efforts. The findings underscore farm products’ potential to enhance farm resilience and regional identity, though entrepreneurial challenges and restricted collaboration hinder growth

Effects of augmented reality visitor guides under consideration of nudging and visual design

    No full text
Tourist experiences no longer only take place in the real world, but are expanded to include digital components or virtual worlds. AR applications on smartphones or handheld devices are particularly suitable for traveling, as they are a constant and familiar companion when on trips. Tourism providers or destination management companies could use AR applications for visitor management and to regulate visitor flows. Visual nudges might increase the steering effect of AR applications. This paper investigates the influence of visual and content design of an AR guide on tourist behavior. A study including an experiment with two sub-groups (n=115) focused on an AB test of an exemplary AR guide mock-up for route recommendations. Results show that nudging via AR might have positive effects on increasing the attractiveness of lesser-known destinations, and thus, on balancing visitors. Limitations of the paper are due to the small data set and the fact that no real behavior but intentions of visitors were evaluated
