Boosting the Performance of Deep Reinforcement Learning for Energy Management Systems using Behavior Cloning from Linear Programming Solutions

    No full text
Energy Management Systems (EMS) for controlling Distributed Energy Resources (DER) like batteries in buildings play an increasingly important role in integrating variable renewable energy. To cope with their increasing complexity, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been suggested as data-driven and highly flexible control method. However, DRL applied to EMS still suffers from relatively poor performance compared to Model Predictive Control (MPC) and requires long training time on large datasets to become competitive. This paper presents a novel approach to improve DRL controllers for solar battery systems optimizing time of energy use based on dynamic prices by initializing Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) parameters using optimal solutions from Linear Programming (LP). We adapt Behavior Cloning (BC), a form of Imitation Learning that traditionally transfers human expertise to robots, by using mathematically optimized behaviors rather than human demonstrations, resulting in reduced training steps and increased performance. Experimental results using actual data collected in industrial microgrids show that our approach achieves up to 40% higher cost savings compared to standard DRL models, while reducing training steps by 80% requiring just 4 weeks of LP solutions as demonstrations. Using an extensive sensitivity analysis across various load profiles and system sizing parameters, we validate the robustness of these improvements. Our findings highlight the potential of LP-based parameter initialization to accelerate the adoption of DRL in Energy Management Systems

In view of the growing need for care, declining professional care capacities and the erosion of family support structures, voluntary help is becoming increasingly important. Digital matching platforms are seen as a promising tool for making local support services more flexible, efficient and individualized. From August 2023 to October 2024, the research project IPot - Implementation and engagement-promoting potential of a digital solution for providing help to older people investigated the introduction of such a platform in a rural community in southern Bavaria. Based on heuristic models of implementation research and a qualitative ethnographic mix of methods, the study accompanied the digital transformation of municipal neighborhood assistance for one year. The focus was on the experiences of mediation providers, helpers and those seeking help, as well as their usage patterns and perceived added value. The explorative study identifies potential critical success factors for sustainable implementation and sheds light on the opportunities and challenges of digital engagement infrastructures in rural areas. The results provide initial empirically based guidance for research and professional practice

“Well, it’s very doctor-related” – interprofessional communication and collaboration between GP practices and nurses in the ambulant setting: a qualitative study in southern Germany

    No full text
Background The demographic transition in Germany is leading to an increase in the number of people needing care or nursing services in their own homes. Interprofessional communication and collaboration among healthcare professions providing outpatient care is paramount to ensure effective and high-quality patient-centred care. However, interprofessional communication and collaboration comes with complex prerequisites and rarely works smoothly. Thus, it is necessary to assess the current status quo. Therefore, the aim is to characterize communication patterns, factors influencing interprofessional communication and collaboration and expectations towards communication and collaboration between home-care nursing services and general practitioner practices in Germany. Methods Semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals in general practitioners’ practices (n=7) and nurses working in home-care nursing services (n=10) were conducted in southern Germany. The interviews were analysed using inductive thematic content analysis. Results Current communication occurs via fax, telephone or personal contact for various purposes, including issuing or rectifying prescriptions and exchanging information about change in a patient’s condition. Key factors influencing interprofessional communication are organizational (e.g., lack of direct communication), profession-related (e.g., hierarchy) and individual (e.g., capacity to provide care). Interprofessional collaboration is scarce. Healthcare professionals expect uncomplicated, efficient and quick communication and collaboration through set channels. Conclusions Current interaction patterns are deficient and require political, structural and educational changes to establish well-functioning collaboration in the ambulant sector that facilitates patient-centred care. Educational and political reforms should comprise expanding interprofessional education in curricula and the introduction of clear and secure communication channels

Extending CARDIO:DE: Additional annotation guidelines and evaluation of NLP approaches for clinical applications

    No full text
Background: Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and the management of these conditions generates extensive clinical data. The CARDIO:DE dataset, a German-language corpus of cardiovascular clinical routine letters, has been developed to support natural language processing research. This study seeks to enhance the dataset by introducing refined annotation guidelines and expanding the annotation schema. Objective: The objective of this study was to extend the CARDIO:DE dataset with additional annotation categories, and evaluate state-of-the-art NLP models to enhance the utility of the dataset for clinical applications. Methods: The annotation schema was expanded to include categories such as diagnostic procedures, medical finding, and therapeutic interventions (Diagnostic, Diagnosis, Drug, Medical_Finding, Therapy). The iterative annotation process involved expert annotators, ensuring high-quality, consistent annotations. Four models—GBERT, medBERT.de, XLM-RoBERTa, and TinyLlama—were fine-tuned and evaluated on the dataset. Model performance was assessed using entity-wise precision, recall, and F1 scores. Results: The extended dataset includes 304,582 token-based annotations, with the highest concentration in medical finding. The inter-annotator agreement scores improved during the iterative process, reaching up to 0.98 for certain subsets. Among the evaluated models, TinyLlama outperformed the other models in entity recognition, achieving a macro-average F1 score of 0.845, highlighting its potential for clinical NLP tasks. Conclusions: The extended CARDIO:DE dataset, with its refined annotation guidelines provides a robust foundation for natural language processing applications in the clinical domain. The performance of the TinyLlama model demonstrates the potential of fine-tuning non-domain-specific models for clinical text processing. This work paves the way for more accurate NLP solutions in healthcare, particularly for information extraction and decision support in cardiology

Simulating Morphology and Degradation of PEMFC Cathode Catalyst Layers with Porous Carbon Supports: Part II. Effect of Ionomer and Relative Humidity on Catalyst Degradation

    No full text
We present a physical degradation model which simulates the evolution of the cathode catalyst layer nanomorphology and associated catalyst surface area in the course of potential-induced ageing. By coupling to the morphology model featured in Part I, the effects of the pore, particle and ionomer distributions and resulting nanoscale interfaces in each individual material are taken into account. Specifically, the model discriminates between catalyst ageing on the support surface and inside primary pores of the support. For model validation, catalyst utilization data in terms of active surface area measured at varying relative humidity is used. These data are sensitive to a variety of electrode properties such as support porosity, catalyst loading and size and ionomer loading. Simulations are compared against data from 15 samples manufactured in-house using different materials and aged in different conditions. In-depth analysis of simulation results identifies the model as a valuable tool to establish a link between electrode composition and nanomorphology as well as between nanomorphology and expected degradation
