Active Social Engineering Defense Using Large Language Models
No full textDigital social engineering attacks are typically characterized as having a low probability of success with success rates increasing only after bidirectional contact with the victim has been established. Thus, the attackers business model has to value the time investment accordingly. In this paper a concept to utilize the surge in quality of Large Language Models (LLM) to automatically generate responses to social engineering messages is proposed. This forces the attacker to incur additional manual effort reading and replying to these responses. From the attackers point of view this increases the time expenditure in some stages of an attack without increasing their success probability for the individual victim. The proposed concept is a multi-step process and designed to be agnostic to the LLM and the digital communication medium. At its core, the concept creates a believable fictitious identity including personality traits to make the output of the LLM more realistic and thus decrease the likelihood of detection on the attacker side. The proposed concept is analyzed on challenges arising in real-world application and implemented as a proof-of-concept demonstrating the general feasibility of the approach. It was possible to show that given some assumptions a significant asymmetry in costs-incurred between the attacker and defender exists that heavily favor the defenders side. This indicates the necessity of further research into the viability and effectiveness of the approach in a real-world deployment. Given that this evaluation has not yet been conducted it is not possible to evaluate the effectiveness and scalability of the concept in regards to the social engineering landscape

Development, implementation and evaluation of a hybrid study program for sustainability competencies and future skills
Get PDFIntroduction: Industrialized countries face the challenge of an aging population and declining birth rates, leading to a shortage of qualified personnel. In addition, organizations are confronted with the need for a sustainable transformation, driven by factors such as customer expectations, regulatory requirements, legislative changes, competitive pressures, and societal demands. This leads to increasing demand for, and a shortage of, employees with relevant future skills, particularly in sustainability competencies. Universities are adopting their offers to address these evolving societal and business needs.
Methods: This study presents recent literature on workforce and student demands, with a particular focus on sustainability competencies and flexibility in education, also for addressing needs of lifelong learning. Based on these insights, we conducted a survey targeting current and potential students in a rural, industrial-dominated region in Germany to better understand their expectations and needs.
Results: The findings informed the development of a Master’s program that emphasizes sustainable development through project-based learning and close collaboration with businesses and organizations. Key features include flexible, blended/hybrid learning approaches and a wide array of elective modules from related degree programs, allowing students to tailor their studies to personal and professional goals while accommodating part-time work or caregiving responsibilities. Student evaluations conducted after the program launch reveal its success in meeting regional and broader student demands. Students highlighted the importance of flexibility, interactive learning, and the integration of interdisciplinary topics. These preferences also underscore the challenges of implementing such a program, particularly the need for effective coordination by both students and the university.
Discussion and conclusion: We conclude that the program model is well-suited to addressing current demands. However, it requires ongoing adaptation to ensure sustainable success, also to meet lifelong learning demands by continuously including trends and topics of relevance for the target group
Nudging – die gesunde und nachhaltige Wahl einfach einfacher machen!
No full textBefördert durch ein Betriebliches Gesundheitsmanagement (BGF) oder eigenmotiviert übernimmt die Betriebsgastronomie (BG) zunehmend eine Mitverantwortung für die gesunde und nachhaltige Ernährung der ihr anvertrauten Gäste. Gesunde und nachhaltige Speisen und Getränke in der BG vermehrt anzubieten, heißt allerdings noch lange nicht, dass diese von den Essensgästen auch gewählt werden. Engagierte und verantwortungsbewusste Anbietende nutzen inzwischen darüber hinaus verschiedene Ansätze, um die bevorzugte Auswahl gesunder und nachhaltiger Speisen und Getränke zu fördern. Einer dieser Ansätze, der Entscheidungen behutsam unterstützend lenkt, ist das sogenannte Nudging. Nudging wird nachfolgend vertieft, da es in der letzten Zeit große Aufmerksamkeit erfahren hat und in jedem Betriebsrestaurant vergleichsweise unaufwendig und einfach umzusetzen ist

Get PDFDer vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt die Vorgehensweise zur Entwicklung einer didaktischen Intervention auf Basis eines Kognitionsmodells zum Aufbau von Data-Literacy-Kompetenzen mittels Design-Based-Research und dessen Wirkungsmessung. Mit dem Projekt sollen Antworten auf die Frage generiert werden, welche Kompetenzen Studierende benötigen, um datengetrieben kommunizieren und entscheiden zu können. Des Weiteren soll die Frage geklärt werden, wie ein didaktischer Lösungsansatz als Intervention beschaffen sein sollte, der Studierende effektiv beim Aufbau der identifizierten Kompetenzen unterstützt. Der Fokus des Artikels liegt auf der methodischen Vorgehensweise, welche im Beitrag ausführlich dargestellt und diskutiert wird. Die Ergebnisauswertung erfolgt in künftigen Arbeiten und wird abschließend in der Dissertation dargestellt.
Die zu entwickelnde Intervention unterstützt Lernende dabei, Datenprodukte so zu interpretieren und zu kommunizieren, dass auf deren Basis gute Entscheidungen getroffen werden können. Hierfür wurden Visualization-Literacy- und Visual-Literacy-Kompetenzen als Teilkompetenzen von Data Literacy identifiziert. Beide sind für die datenbasierte Kommunikation und daraus resultierende Entscheidungsfindung, auch außerhalb des Studienalltags, von großer Relevanz und werden im Verlauf des Dissertationsprojekts noch weiter spezifiziert. Durch den Einsatz geeigneter Vermittlungsmethoden erhalten Studierende mehr Literacy-Kompetenzen. Ebenso profitiert die Hochschullehre durch eine adäquate Vermittlungsform der Kompetenzen. Ziel soll sein, die erworbenen Kompetenzen nicht nur innerhalb des Studiums adäquat zu nutzen, sondern in einem späteren, durch Digitalisierung geprägten Berufsleben anzuwenden
