    Biogenic raw materials from food waste and by-products for smart packaging applications

    Innovative smart packaging concepts are seen as crucial in addressing the challenges of sustainable food production. In this brief review paper, recent advancements in smart packaging are explored, with a focus on biogenic raw materials derived from agro-food by-products and waste. The primary goal is to develop environmentally sustainable systems that enhance food quality, extend shelf life, and thereby reduce economic and environmental losses. This paper briefly reviews recent findings on antioxidative and antimicrobial packaging concepts that delay food deterioration. One focus is on encapsulating natural substances and carbon dots in active films to boost their performance. The paper also discusses pH-sensitive anthocyanin-based indicators for assessing food freshness and analyzes strategies to stabilize these indicators, including encapsulation, enzyme inactivation, and multilayer film design. This review aims to provide guidance for future research and application in the field of sustainable smart packaging, offering innovative solutions for food preservation and food waste reduction

    Masson Pine pollen (Pinus massoniana) activate HD11 chicken macrophages in vitro

    Ethnopharmacological relevance: Masson Pine pollen (Pinus massoniana; MP) are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat gut conditions. Early in vivo work supports this claim and suggests interaction of the material with the gastrointestinal immune system. Aim of the study: The present study tested if and how MP material activates HD11 chicken macrophages in vitro using material from different production sites and harvest years. Material & methods: We applied twelve batches of MP from different Chinese production sites and harvest years. Materials were subjected to LAL tests (endotoxic activity), GC-MS (fatty acid analysis), and plate techniques (microbiological background, antimicrobial activity). Furthermore, HD11 chicken macrophages were challenged (6 h, 37 ◦C) with MP or LPS (E. coli O111:B4), respectively, to quantify nitric oxide (NO) production and immune gene expression (RT-qPCR). Results: MP material promoted strong signals in LAL tests and contained significant amounts of 3-hydroxydodecanoic acid and 3-hydroxymyristic acid, irrespective of processing, harvest year, or origin. The pollen material activated HD11 chicken macrophages, which was confirmed by spikes of NO release and k-means cluster analysis of TLR-signaling pathway gene expression data. Response of NO production to Log2-titration of MP and LPStreated media was in any case linear and significant. The response was reduced by polymyxin-B (PMB) and the inhibition was twice as strong for LPS than MP. No or minor microbiological background was detected on the majority of MP samples. Three samples showed presence of spoilage microorganisms and Gram-negative bacteria, but this did not correlate to LAL data or bacterial DNA counts. No antimicrobial activity of MP was evident. Conclusion: Pollen of the Masson Pine activated HD11 chicken macrophages in vitro, which is likely partially due to a background of bacterial LPS associated with the pollen material. However, as most of the effect (appr. 80%) could not be blocked by PMB this is certainly due to other stimuli. We hypothesize that polysaccharides and oligosaccharides of the pollen matrix have the potential to interact with certain immune receptors presented on the plasma membrane of chicken macrophages

    IVISIT: An Interactive Visual Simulation Tool for system simulation, visualization, optimization, and parameter management.

    IVISIT is a generic interactive visual simulation tool that is based on Python/Numpy and can be used for system simulation, parameter optimization, parameter management, and visualization of system dynamics as required, for example,for developing neural network simulations, machine learning applications, or computer vision systems. It provides classes for rapid prototyping of applications and visualization and manipulation of system properties using interactive GUI elements like sliders, images, textboxes, option lists, checkboxes and buttons based on Tkinter and Matplotlib. Parameters and simulation configurations can be stored and managed based on SQLite database functions. This technical report describes the main architecture and functions of IVISIT, and provides easy examples how to rapidly implement interactive applications and manage parameter settings

    A Means-End Chain approach to investigate consumer motives for the choice of bread made from heritage cereals

    Intensive agricultural production methods are one of the main reasons for the loss of agrobiodiversity. To reduce this loss, one option is the on-farm preservation of genetic resources. For on-farm preservation to be successful, the cultivation of heritage cereals has to be made attractive for farmers. While there are some studies exploring the perception of heritage cereals, endangered species and heirloom vegetable varieties, there is still a lack of research on consumers’ purchase motives. To close this gap, we combined soft and hard laddering and focused on bread made from heritage cereal varieties. First, we carried out 42 laddering interviews with consumers in four German cities, and second, we conducted a Germany-wide online survey including a hard laddering with 1200 consumers. We found that the psycho-social consequences health and naturalness dominate when purchasing bread made from heritage cereals and could be relevant elements of market-ing communication strategies

    Production of Hydrogel-Based Curcumin-Loaded O/W Suspoemulsions

    Curcumin is a biopharmaceutical classification system (BCS) class IV substance with many potential therapeutic effects. However, like many other BCS IV active pharmaceutical ingredients, complex formulations are needed to guarantee a sufficiently high bioavailability [1]. A not-so-well-known delivery system is a suspoemulsion (SE). SEs are emulsions with a crystalline API in continuous or dispersed phases. This study aimed to produce curcumin-loaded o/w suspoemulsions with the particle in the oil phase for, e.g., encapsulation or triggered release effects. The particles need to be smaller than the emulsion droplet size to attain high encapsulation efficiencies (EE) in the oil phase. Sonofragmentation and bead milling will tested for their ability to produce these nanocrystals in different dispersion media and final formular for a suspoemulsion will be presented

    Pain prevalence rates and the mediating role of negative affect in adults referred to personality disorder treatment: A cross-sectional study

    Personality disorders (PDs) are prevalent among individuals with chronic pain, but less is known about the prevalence of pain in the PD population. This study therefore sought to explore the prevalence of current or everyday pain among individuals referred to outpatient PD treatment, and further explore the mediating role of negative affect in the relationship between PD severity and current pain. Data was retrieved from the Norwegian Network for PDs’ quality register which included 4361 participants. Pain was operationalized using the EQ-5D-3L “pain or discomfort” item and four SCL-90-R pain-related items (“pain bothersomeness”). Rates of self-reported pain were explored both pre and post treatment to determine the persistency of the pain-related symptoms. The role of negative affect in the relationship between PD severity and pain was investigated by linear regression analysis. A substantial burden of pain-related symptoms was demonstrated, as 71% and 80% reported moderate to extreme pain or discomfort and pain bothersomeness, respectively. Muscle soreness was the most common pain (59%) followed by headache (48%), low back pain (46%), and heart or chest pain (34%). Moderate to extreme pain or discomfort was persistent for 77% of the participants who provided end of treatment data (mean treatment duration was 82 weeks). Negative affect mediated the relationship between PD severity and pain. To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale study on everyday pain in patients with PDs. The findings reveal that moderate to extreme pain is prevalent among persons with PDs and that this co-occurrence is driven by negative affect
