CDOM dynamics in two coastal zones influenced by contrasting land uses in northern Patagonia
Colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is an indicator and optical proxy of terrestrial processes such as land use with allochthonous material fluxes, biogeochemical cycles, and water quality in coastal zones influenced by rivers. However, the role of land use changes on the spatial and temporal availability of CDOM has been poorly explored in Chile. Here, we studied two watersheds with similar climates and contrasting land use patterns in northern Patagonia considering the sampling of CDOM in their estuarine and adjacent coastal ocean. An empirical algorithm with the coefficients adjusted to our study areas to estimate CDOM was applied to Landsat 7 and 8 images to examine temporal variability of CDOMest from 2001 to 2011 and 2013–2020. Our results showed an increasing trend of CDOMest in both areas. Different trends in land use patterns between the two watersheds showed a significant correlation with CDOMest and contrasting associations with environmental variables. Higher humification was found in Yaldad in comparison with Colu. In both areas, allochthonous materials predominated, especially during austral spring according to the low values of the Fluorescence Index (FI). Our results highlight the potential of CDOMest to parameterize biogeochemical cycling models and to further understand the dynamics of CDOM in coastal ecosystems
CLASS angular power spectra and map-component analysis for 40 GHz observations through 2022
Measurement of the largest angular scale (ℓ < 30) features of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization is a powerful way to constrain the optical depth to reionization and search for the signature of inflation through the detection of primordial B-modes. We present an analysis of maps covering 73.6% of the sky made from the 40 GHz channel of the Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) from 2016 August to 2022 May. Taking advantage of the measurement stability enabled by front-end polarization modulation and excellent conditions from the Atacama Desert, we show this channel achieves higher sensitivity than the analogous frequencies from satellite measurements in the range 10 < ℓ < 100. Simulations show the CLASS linear (circular) polarization maps have a white noise level of 125(130) uK arcmin. We measure the Galaxy-masked EE and BB spectra of diffuse synchrotron radiation and compare to space-based measurements at similar frequencies. In combination with external data, we expand measurements of the spatial variations of the synchrotron spectral energy density (SED) to include new sky regions and measure the diffuse SED in the harmonic domain. We place a new upper limit on a background of circular polarization in the range 5 < ℓ < 125 with the first bin showing Dℓ < 0.023 uK2CMB at 95% confidence. These results establish a new standard for recovery of the largest-scale CMB polarization from the ground and signal exciting possibilities when the higher sensitivity and higher-frequency CLASS channels are included in the analysis
Spatial and temporal variability of the two main catched species of an artisanal trap fishery in an oceanic island
1. This study analysed the catches of trap fishing in the Canary Archipelago, NE Atlantic Ocean. This study was conducted from October 2016 to September 2017, April to November 2018 and September 2020, in five ports (San Cristobal, Taliarte, Castillo del Romeral, Arguineguín and Mogán).
2. The primary gear were traps with small mesh size (31.6 mm) and large mesh size (50.8 mm). A total of 2587 small mesh size traps and 141 large mesh size traps were analysed from 20- to 130-m depth.
3. The main target species were Dentex gibbosus and Stephanolepis hispidus.
4. Catches of traps with large mesh size showed D. gibbosus above first maturity and S. hispidus in small mesh size traps. Both species exhibit larger specimens during reproductive periods.
5. The most effective traps for D. gibbosus (large mesh) were located on the western coast (>30-m depth), with the highest catch per unit of effort (CPUE) in Mogán (857.7 g trap-1 day-1). The most effective traps for S. hispidus (small mesh) were located in southern areas, especially in sandy habitats (124.9 g trap-1 day-1 in Castillo del Romeral, 102.9 g trap-1 day-1 in Arguineguín).
6. The highest catchability of D. gibbosus was observed in April (CPUE of 962.8 g trap-1 day-1), and the highest catchability of S. hispidus was found in June (CPUE of 165.9 g trap-1 day-1).
7. The traps with small mesh size showed a great selectivity of sizes for S. hispidus; though high catch rates of immature specimens of D. gibbosus pose a threat to species conservation.
8. The management recommendations' proposed measures include revising minimum catch sizes for both species. Additionally, we suggested depth limitations for mesh sizes of traps.
9. The study highlights the need for new management strategies to ensure the conservation of targeted demersal species, with special emphasis on addressing the threat posed by small mesh sizes to immature D. gibbosus.
10. The findings provide valuable insights for adapting fishery management practices to sustainably conserve the targeted species in the Canary Archipelago
Temporal changes of phytoplankton-derived sterols in suspended particulate matter and their implications as biomarkers for phytoplankton abundance in northern Patagonia, Reloncaví Estuarine System (RES), Chile
The Northern Patagonia coast, characterized by an intricate interaction among terrestrial and marine systems such as Reloncaví Estuarine System (RES), present highly productive marine and aquaculture activities, having a significant socio-economic importance in Chile. Understanding the composition of Organic Matter (OM) in aquatic ecosystems is crucial for elucidating biogeochemical processes, and the use of lipid biomarkers, has proven valuable in identifying OM sources. This study investigates the relationship between phytoplankton biomass indicators, including phytoplankton abundance, chlorophyll-a, and sterol molecules synthesized in high percentages by phytoplankton cells, also known as phytoplankton-derived sterols at the RES. The RES encompasses the Reloncaví Fjord (RF) and the Reloncaví Sound (RS) and exhibits a high influenced by oceanic waters and freshwater discharge from rivers Spatio-temporal sampling was conducted during the austral spring, summer and winter expeditions of 2018 and 2019, at two sites in RS and RF mouth (RFm). Our findings reveal higher sterol concentration at RFm than RS. Notably, high sterol concentrations during austral summer season coinciding with increased phytoplankton abundances. Furthermore, higher concentrations of terrestrial-derived sterols such as β-sitosterol (C29Δ5) and stigmasterol (C29Δ5,22), at RFm site suggested an input of OM from the inner RF. Phytoplankton-derived sterols such as 24-methylenecholesterol (C28Δ5,24(28)) provide a reliable estimate of total diatom abundance at both sites (RFm and RS), though they showed a lower relationship with taxonomic subroups and phytoplankton classes in our study area. Hence, phytoplankton-derived sterols can be considered reliable diatom biomarkers, particularly in the RS, where the primary source of OM is predominantly marine, and even with high sterol degradation values at RES. Our study highlights the importance of interpreting changes in sterol abundances as phytoplankton community shifts. To avoid misinterpretation, it is essential to incorporate direct phytoplankton counts in elucidating the complex biosynthetic sources of sterols within the water column
Acute physiological and psychological responses during an incremental treadmill test wearing a new upper-body sports garment with elastomeric technology
Background: The use of elastomeric technology in sports garments is increasing in popularity; however, its specific impact on physiological and psychological variables is not fully understood. Thus, we aimed to analyze the physiological (muscle activation of the pectoralis major, triceps brachii, anterior deltoid, and rectus abdominis, capillary blood lactate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate) and psychological (global and respiratory rating of perceived exertion [RPE]) responses during an incremental treadmill test wearing a new sports garment for the upper body that incorporates elastomeric technology or a placebo garment.
Methods: Eighteen physically active young adults participated in two randomized sessions, one wearing the elastomeric garment and the other wearing a placebo. Participants performed in both sessions the same treadmill incremental test (i.e., starting at 8 km/h, an increase of 2 km/h each stage, stage duration of 3 min, and inclination of 1%; the test ended after completing the 18 km/h Stage or participant volitional exhaustion). The dependent variables were assessed before, during, and/or after the test. Nonparametric tests evaluated differences.
Results: The elastomeric garment led to a greater muscle activation (p &lt; 0.05) in the pectoralis major at 16 km/h (+33.35%, p = 0.01, d = 0.47) and 18 km/h (+32.09%, p = 0.02, d = 0.55) and in the triceps brachii at 10 km/h (+20.28%, p = 0.01, d = 0.41) and 12 km/h (+34.95%, p = 0.04, d = 0.28). Additionally, lower lactate was observed at the end of the test (−7.81%, p = 0.01, d = 0.68) and after 5 min of recovery (−13.71%, p &lt; 0.001, d = 1.00) with the elastomeric garment. Nonsignificant differences between the garments were encountered in the time to exhaustion, cardiovascular responses, or ratings of perceived exertion.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that elastomeric garments enhance physiological responses (muscle activation and blood lactate) during an incremental treadmill test without impairing physical performance or effort perception
Women in physical education teacher education: An approach to the difficulties in their formative experiences
La literatura ha destacado la masculinización de la carrera de Pedagogía en Educación Física (PEF). En este estudio, se buscó comprender desde la perspectiva de género las dificultades en las experiencias formativas de las estudiantes de PEF en el contexto de una carrera masculinizada. Adoptando un enfoque cualitativo dentro del paradigma interpretativo, se llevaron a cabo seis grupos focales con un total de 20 estudiantes mujeres de seis universidades chilenas en los cuales se utilizó un guión semiestructurado. Los datos recopilados se analizaron temáticamente para identificar temas recurrentes y variaciones en las respuestas. Se realizaron interpretaciones para buscar relaciones y significados subyacentes. Tres hallazgos relevantes surgieron: a) una baja conciencia sobre la presencia de la masculinización en la carrera; b) la persistencia de sexismo y estereotipos de género, a los cuales las estudiantes reaccionaron mediante justificación, resignación y cuestionamiento; y c) una división y, a veces, jerarquización entre el deporte y la pedagogía en términos de género
Evaluating the isotopic composition of leaf organic compounds in fog-dependent Tillandsia landbeckii across the coastal Atacama Desert: Implications for hydroclimate reconstructions at the dry limit
Fog is an important component of the coastal climate of northern Chile and southern Peru. Moisture and nutrients from fog maintain highly endemic vegetation (lomas) as well as unique Tillandsia landbeckii ecosystems that thrive at elevations of ca. 900–1200 m asl. Although this epiphytic CAM bromeliad is well adapted to the extreme climate, declining Tillandsia stocks observed over the past decades question the long-term survival with ongoing climate change. Here, we aim at better understanding the hydroclimatic signal encoded in the leaf organic compounds of Tillandsia landbeckii across the Atacama Desert’s coastal mountain range (ca. 18–21◦S). First, we investigate spatiotemporal patterns of fog occurrence and related moisture sources available for the plants applying a new satellite-based fog-detection approach. We then use stable carbon, oxygen and hydrogen (δ13C, δ18O, δD) isotope analysis of leaf wax n-alkanes and cellulose to identify photosynthetic pathway as well as environmental and physiological processes that shape the isotopic composition in Tillandsia landbeckii. We find that leaf wax n-alkanes and cellulose reflect the balance of climatic and physiological drivers differently. While nalkane δD values more closely follow changes in precipitation δD, evaporative enrichment seems to have a dominant influence on cellulose δ18O values. Cellulose δD values are highly enriched compared to n-alkane δD values, likely reflecting a predominant metabolic imprint on δD. δ13C signatures in the organic compounds are valid proxies for CAM activity. Our results prove the general applicability of the isotopic biomarkers for reconstructing environmental change in the coastal Atacama Desert. This approach can be extended globally to west-coast deserts that share fog as a major source of moisture
Variability in the Relationship Between Velocity Loss and Percentage of Completed Repetitions During Horizontal Leg Press and Bench Press in Postmenopausal Women

J Strength Cond Res 38(9): 1576–1583, 2024—This study aimed to analyze the intersubject variability in the relationship between percentage of velocity loss (%VL) and percentage of repetitions performed out of maximum possible (%MNR) in postmenopausal women. Thirty-five postmenopausal active women (58 ± 3 years) performed sets leading to muscular failure, completing 10–13 repetitions, in both leg press (LP) and bench press (BP). Mean lift velocity of each repetition was expressed as a percentage of the fastest repetition, and repetitions were quantified as a percentage of the maximum number of repetitions completed in the set. Given the hierarchical structure of the data, %VL–%MNR relationships were fitted by linear mixed model regressions. A significant intersubject variability in the intercept (i.e., %MNR associated with 0%VL) was detected (p < 0.001 in both LP and BP), even when centered values of the completed repetitions were included in the models. The estimated variance in the intercept for LP (117.39; SE: 45.41) was almost double that for BP (67.47; SE: 20.27). The variability observed in the intercept entailed variability in the estimated %MNR for specific %VL values. The use of velocity loss thresholds for estimating the intensity of effort in active postmenopausal women does not overcome uncertainty of more traditional methods
