The text addresses the water crisis in the Wayuu people in La Guajira, a problem that has influenced the ways of narrating, especially the work of the writer Vicenta María Siosi Pino. The approach of the text is exploratory and analytical, where various discursive registers were used to understand the configuration of the antagonistic/complementary binomial of abundance and lack. The analysis reveals that water scarcity has affected not only the tangible aspects of Wayuu life, but also its symbolic and narrative competencies, where Siosi Pino’s work stands out as an archive of coloniality that documents and critiques water injustice. The text concludes that the binomial of abundance and lack of water has been a recurring theme in Wayuu narratives, reflecting the historical and contemporary tensions and conflicts of power, where the work of Siosi Pino not only preserves the cultural memory of his people, but also which also acts as a tool of resistance and fight for water justice. Exploring multiliteracies and selfesteem development through Disney villains in EAL Education
This article explores how self-esteem develops in English as an additional language (EAL) students through the figure of the villain in Disney films. The study, conducted during the 2022-2023 academic year in a 3rd grade class at a public school in Valencia, employed the pedagogy of multiliteracies to enhance students' self-esteem and facilitate knowledge construction. Inspired by villains from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), 101 Dalmatians (1961), The Little Mermaid (1989) and The Lion King (1994), the didactic unit used these characters to teach English and to prompt discussions on acceptance and self-esteem. Various instruments were utilized to gather and interpret data in order to assess the research objectives. The incorporation of multimodal resources, as advocated by the pedagogy of multiliteracies, ensured that lessons were engaging and in line with contemporary language education practices. The results indicate a positive impact on students' self-esteem, knowledge construction, and motivation to express their ideas and reflections. This article explores how self-esteem develops in English as an additional language (EAL) students through the figure of the villain in Disney films.
In this tour of the first three books –Brindis (1994), La insidia del sol sobre las cosas (1998) and Calas (2001) – by Chilean poet Germán Carrasco, belonging to the emergence of the 90s, we try to show how the motives and the most frequent procedures in the author's poetry are installed productively in the realm of the symbolic and not in the mere insignificance and inconsequentiality of significance. Thus, we observe as a major framework in Carrasco's poetics, the displacement and search –mainly through visuality– of the solar and paternal foundation, in the face of whose absence and presence, and through the positive and negative emulation of its creative power, the subject is constituted ambivalently in writing. It is precisely this present/absent character of the masculine divinity that sustains the reconstitution, between the work of mourning, the melancholic dissolution and the euphoric erasure, of what was lost.
This text addresses various aspects of writing in Mapuzugun, highlighting its value not only as a functional tool but also as a profound act that connects with Mapuche spirituality and roots, linked to the philosophy of Azmapu and Itxofill Mogen. It examines the challenges related to the lack of standardization in writing, the decolonization of Mapuche narratives, and the increasing functional use of the language in public spaces. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of oral tradition—such as the epew—in the epistemic, cultural, and spiritual transmission, and the need to promote intercultural dialogue to value and respect the Mapuche language, in order to ensure its preservation and revitalization in both oral and written forms.
Several studies have demonstrated that young people who identify with a transgender identity are at a higher risk of suicide. This is due to various social factors, such as gender discrimination, experiences of marginalization, family rejection, and internalized stigma. This study aimed to understand the experiences of a group of young people living in Chile who self-identify as transgender and have survived a suicide attempt. A multiple-case design was used, and qualitative interviews were conducted with seven participants. The interviews were analyzed using discovery-oriented biographical analysis (DOBA), which allowed an understanding of the organization, interpretation, and meaning of the participants' experiences. From this analysis, we identified a model consisting of four phases or stages was identified, linking aspects of the transgender identity emergence process with suicidal risk factors. Two cross-cutting elements in each stage were also identified: social violence and the body and its dimensions. The study concludes that the process of transgender identity emergence intertwines with narratives of suicidal experiences and, therefore, sensitive and competent interventions with young people could be preventive.
Assessment of a wildfire in the remaining Nothofagus alessandrii forests, an endangered species of Chile, based on satellite Sentinel-2 images
Nothofagus alessandrii is an endangered species that is naturally distributed in a Mediterranean environment in central Chile. In recent years, this territory has been subject to the effects of climate change, especially an increase in summer temperatures and prolonged periods of drought. In the summer of 2017, there was a fire of great magnitude consuming 184,000 ha, which affected the forests of N. alessandrii. This study assessed the severity and recovery dynamics of postfire vegetation by using spectral indices from Sentinel-2 images. The differenced normalized burn ratio (dNBR), relative differenced normalized burn ratio (RdNBR), and relativized burn ratio (RBR) were calculated before and after the fire and, later, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) before the fire and during three consecutive years after the fire was utilized. The accuracy of the fire severity classifications was estimated using the kappa test (p<0.05). The three severity indices showed a similar classification in severity assessment and postfire response. The low-medium burn area in N. alessandrii forests ranged between 111.2 ha (RdNBR) and 130.3 ha (dNBR), and the high effect was between 46.1 ha (dNBR) and 66.0 ha (RdNBR), which was equivalent in both cases, approximately 11% of the total. Regarding the NDVI, vegetation recovery after three years of the fire showed a systematic return to prefire conditions. The assessment of the effect of a mega forest fire on the remaining forests of N. alessandrii based on Sentinel-2 images offers the opportunity for a better understanding of the severity of damage and the behavior of vegetation after the fire. All this information will help in a better recovery of these forests
Study of biomass accumulation using different nutrient media
In recent years, the use of microorganisms to stimulate plant growth and resistance, including biocontrol and maintenance or improvement of microbial activity and soil functionality, has increased. The aim of this work was to select nutrient media and to optimize the deep cultivation regimes of a biopreparation consisting of the Bacillus pumilus Pol P3(1) 10 B-RKM 0528, Bacillus thuringiensis Pb 30 B-RKM 0341, Bacillus licheniformis 356 B-RKM 0074 and Serratia marcescens Sh-2 B-RKM 0952 strains, which exhibit high growth-stimulating activity. Three different media were use to cultivate the biopreparation: standard meat-peptone broth medium, King's medium and Mueller-Hinton's medium. The main criterion for determining the effectiveness of the nutrient medium was the accumulation of specific components to yield the largest biomass of biopreparation cells. A comparative analysis of growth on the nutrient media was used to assess the viability and biomass accumulation of the biopreparation strains tested. The optimum cultivation period, maximum optical density of biomass growth, viability and optimum medium acidity during bacterial cultivation on nutrient media were determined both for the strains individually and as part of the biopreparation
