    Roles of Tertiary Institutions in Curbing Corruption in Nigeria

    This paper explored the roles of tertiary institutions in curbing corruption in Nigeria. The research method employed for this study is the documentary research method, using secondary data that were collected from both print and online publications. The paper established that tertiary institutions have a lot of roles to play in curbing corruption in Nigeria. Specifically, the paper identified teaching, research, provision of community service, establishment of centres for the studies on corruption prevention and development of professional programmes on corruption prevention as the roles of tertiary institutions in curbing corruption. Based on the findings of this study, the paper recommended that all tertiary institutions in Nigeria should set up the ‘Centre for Anti-Corruption Studies’ for training of public and civil servants in grade level 8 and above, and be given a special role in the fight against corruption in Nigeria. The suggested solution will enable government workers to implement some of their suggestions and recommendations coming out of the various Centres for Corruption Studies’ in Nigeria

    Artificial Intelligence in School Administration in the Post-Basic Education and Career Development (PBECD) in Nigeria

    This paper assessed the impact of Artificial Intelligence on school administration and teachers job performance in post-basic education and career development (PBECD) in Nigeria. Secondary data were used in the paper. The data were collected from print and online publications. The paper established that Artificial Intelligence aids effective school administration such as Data analysis and Decision Making, Automation of Administrative task, Resource Optimization, Student Support and intervention among others. It also identify some challenges and ethical considerations in schools such as Ethical Use of Student Data, Data Privacy and Security Concerns, Potential Bias in AI Decision Making. The studies also suggest that School administrators have to periodically inspect AI systems for bias and take actions to mitigate any found flaws. Additionally, varied and representative datasets should be used to train AI systems in order to reduce biases in decision making.  Based on this findings, the paper concludes that government should increase investment on Artificial Intelligence infrastructure facilities in post-basic education and career development (PBECD) in Nigeria

    The Effect of Jigsaw Type Cooperative Learning Model on Science Learning Outcomes at Grade V Students of UPTD SD Negeri 122345 Jalan Thamrin Pematangsiantar

    This study aims to determine the effect of the Jigsaw Type Cooperative Learning Model on the science learning outcomes of fifth grade students of UPTD SD Negeri 122345 Jalan Thamrin Pematangsiantar. The type of research used in this study is quantitative research using an experimental method (pre-experimental design). The research design used is One Group Pretest-Posttest. The population of the study was in fifth grade students of UPTD SD Negeri 122345 Jalan Thamrin located in East Siantar District. The sample in this study was taken from one class used as a One Group class so that the sample in this study was all fifth grade students of UPTD SD Negeri 122345 Jalan Thamrin Pematangsiantar totaling 23 students. The results of the average pretest score were 53.73 which was included in the category of less than good or had not met the KKM, then the average posttest result was 86.17 which was included in the good category. The instrument test carried out used a test technique with a reliability test, a difficulty level test, and a discriminatory power test. The results of the Hypothesis test show a t-count value of 11.06 and a t-table of 2.052. Thus, t-count > t-table = 11.06 > 2.052, so Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. So it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of the implementation of the jigsaw type cooperative model on the science learning outcomes of grade V students of UPTD SD Negeri 125546 Pematangsianta

    Effect of Concept Mapping Technique on Academic Performance Among Secondary School Geography Students in Katsina State Nigeria

    This study investigated the effect of concept mapping technique on academic performance among secondary school geography students in Katsina State, Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design. A sample of 156 (94 males and 62 females) which was randomly selected from two schools out of 25 schools with a total population of 5953 (3,317 males and 2,636 female) was used for the study. A 40-item multiple choice titled Geography Performance Test with reliability r = 0.77 was used to collect data. Students in the experimental group were taught using concept mapping while the control group was taught using lecture method. Research questions were answered using Mean and standard deviation. Null hypotheses were tested using independent sample t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the study showed that, there is significant difference between the mean score on performance of students when taught using concept mapping and those taught using lecture methods in favor of the students taught geography using concept mapping. However, there was no significant difference between the mean score on performance of male and female students taught geography using concept mapping. It was concluded that, concept mapping strategy have significant effect on the students’ performance in geography than the traditional lecture method. It was recommended that, geography teachers should expose students to concept mapping strategy so as to improve their performance in geography and both male and female students should be taught geography using concept mapping in other to equally help them learn and perform better

    The Impact of Playing Mobile Legends (ML) as an Online Game on Vocabulary Acquisition in the Perspective of Students’ Perception

    The objective of this study was to investigate the students’ perception in using mobile legends (Mobile Legends) for improving their vocabulary acquisition. Online games have received considerable attention in relation to their educational effects due to the fact that they can create learning opportunities. Teaching English as a second language in an e-learning environment calls for considering the impact of online games on students' vocabulary acquisition. Qualitative research design was conducted in this study. The study's participants were students from a school in Pematangsiantar city who regularly engaged in playing Mobile Legends. These individuals were familiar with the game and accustomed to its gameplay. The primary criterion for selecting participants focused on active internet users who consistently took part in online gaming activities. This study's findings offer valuable insights for teaching methods, learning approaches, and future research aimed at enhancing educational practices. Incorporating Mobile Legends into language instruction can create an engaging, rewarding, and meaningful learning experience. English educators should consider implementing strategies that enhance vocabulary presentation to students. The game's features, such as word memorization exercises, can effectively maintain student focus by making the learning process exciting. Additionally, the visual elements within the game enable students to identify and comprehend the meanings of specific words more easily

    Impact of Constructive Simulation Based Teaching Strategy on Academic Performance In Light Wave Concept in Physics

    The performance of senior secondary school students in physics has been very poor over the years in Nigeria. Teachers’ make use of inappropriate instructional approach and students varied knowledge has been identified responsible for this problem. This study examined the impact of constructive simulation based teaching strategy on academic performance in light wave concept in physics among senior secondary school students in Katsina Educational Zone of Katsina State, Nigeria. A pretest/posttest quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. A population of 3,414 SS II students was used for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select two classes comprises of 57 males and 43 females as sample size of the study. Two research objectives, research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. One instrument Light Wave Concept Academic Performance Test (LWCAPT) was faced validated by experts in the field; the reliability coefficients for the instruments were found to be 0.82 via test retest. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at coefficient alpha level of 0.05. The results revealed that students taught light wave concepts in physics using constructive simulation strategy have higher academic performance than those taught using conventional method. It also shows that there is no significant difference of performance scores between male and female students when taught light wave concepts in physics using constructive simulation strategy.     Investigating Teachers’ Strategies in Teaching Reading Comprehension

    The teaching of reading has played an important role in the second language learning process. It is an academic asset in both language learning. Mastery in reading tends to create a positive impact on the learning of other related skills such as information processing, vocabulary, and language structure. Comprehension skills are vital in learning to read in the classroom. While reading, the reader should understand the meaning of the text. In other words, readers must be able to comprehend the information presented in the text. Therefore, reading comprehension skills are important in the learning process as they involve understanding text in the form of writing, message communication, ideas of the content, and more. As the reader engages with the text, he or she must be able to interpret and respond appropriately. Therefore, teachers must concentrate on building students' reading comprehension skills. The appropriate strategies that teachers demonstrate while teaching reading comprehension are essential. The purpose of this study was to describe the teachers' strategies in teaching reading comprehension for the descriptive text of the eighth-grade students. This study employed a qualitative case study research design. Five teachers participated in the study. Observation and interviews were used as instruments to collect data. The results of this study showed that teachers used various strategies for teaching reading comprehension. These strategies include asking questions before reading, asking questions after reading, encouraging students to retell and summarize the text, and asking for the main idea of the text. These strategies are applied by the teachers to help students better understand the message of the text

    Perception of Leadership and Administrative Pattern of Principals in Public Senior Secondary Schools in Rivers State Nigeria

    The study investigated the perception of leadership and administrative pattern of Principals in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population of the study consisted of the two hundred and ninety six (296) principals in all the two hundred and ninety-six (296) public senior secondary schools in the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State. The sample of this study comprised the two hundred and ninety-six (296) principals selected from the two hundred and ninety-six (296) public senior secondary schools in the twenty three (23) Local Government Areas in Rivers State, representing 100% of the population using the census sampling technique. Out of the 296 copies of questionnaires distributed 275 representing 96% of the total number of copies, were duly completed and returned. The instrument for data collection for this study was a 30 item self-structured questionnaire titled “Perception of Leadership and Administrative Pattern of Principals Questionnaire (PLAPPQ)”.  The instrument was structured using the modified 4-points Likert Scale model of; Very High Extent (VHE) – 4 points; High Extent (HE) =3 points; Low Extent (LE) = 2 point and Very Low Extent (VLE) =1 point. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the field of educational management.  Cronbach alpha was used to measure the reliability and obtained 0.92 which implied that the instrument was reliable. Mean and standard deviation was used to answer five (5) research questions, while the t-test statistics was used to test the five (5) null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the findings revealed that to a high extent, Principals performed   administrative roles in students and staff personnel administration as well as leadership roles. The study concluded that principals perform their administrative roles to a high extent as regards to students and staff personnel administration and greater leadership performance in public secondary schools. It recommended among others that principals should endeavour to enhance their knowledge by attending conferences, workshops as it is essential to continue to develop their administrative skills for greater students and staff personnel administration. Government should imbibe administrative principles in their general school administration in order to ensure effective staff and students’ administration

    The Effect of Picture Media on Science Learning Outcomes of Grade III Students at UPTD SD Negeri 124385 Jl. Sawi, Pematangsiantar

    The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was an influence of image media on the science learning outcomes of grade III students. This research was conducted at the UPTD SD Negeri 124385 Jl. Sawi, Kec. Siantar Timur, Pematangsiantar in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research used was quantitative with the type of Pre-Experiment research and the One Group Pretest-Posttest research design. The sample of this study was 25 students consisting of 10 males and 15 females. The results of the average pretest score were 58.32 which was included in the category of less than good or had not met the KKM, then the average posttest result was 83.2 which was included in the very high category. The data collection technique was a test technique with a validity test, a difficulty level test, and a discriminatory power test. The results of the N-Gain score test showed a result of 0.79 where 0.79> 0.70 the results were included in the high category. The percentage value obtained a result of 79.20 where 79.20 > 76 is classified as an effective criterion. The results of the hypothesis test show a calculated t value > t table tubset (12.276 > 2.063). This indicates that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, from the results of this study it can be concluded that there is a significant influence of the application of image media on student learning outcomes in science learning on weather material at UPTD SD Negeri 124385 Jl. Sawi Pematangsiantar &nbsp

    Analysis of Gender Parity Index in Enrolment into Basic Education in Kwara State Nigeria

    The key objective of the current National Educational Policy in Nigeria, which was adopted in 2004, is the attainment of universal basic education by 2015 regardless of gender of school-age children in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5- gender Equality in education. This declaration serves as a basis for the study, which analysed gender parity index in enrolment into basic education in Kwara State from 2018/19-2022/23 academic session. The researcher adopted ex-post facto for the study. The population of this study comprised all the 3,464 primary and secondary (junior) schools in the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State, that is, 2,639 primary schools and 825 junior secondary schools as at 2021/2022 Kwara State annual school census. Descriptive statistics of percentage, ratio and rate were used to analyze the data collected. Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), and Gender Parity Index (GPI) were used to determine gender disparity in enrolment into basic education in Kwara state. The findings of the study revealed that: there was an increase in the enrolment of primary and junior secondary schools in Kwara State from 2019-2023. The result shown that as 100 male pupils enrolled to school, about 85 to 92 female pupils also enrolled to primary level of education and 93 to 97 also enrolled to junior level of education between 2018/19 to 2022/23 academic session. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that: Kwara State government should strive towards attaining the Education for All through its slogan of Every-Child Count in state and make it part of its responsibilities to introduce a body that will continue to enlighten parents on the need why they should send their children to school regardless of their sex
