Attracting applicants with high customer orientation
Employees with high customer orientation have been shown to have better job performance, higher job satisfaction, greater organizational commitment, and increase financial outcomes for their firm. Considered a surface-level trait, customer orientation is not something that can be trained, even if some of the associated behaviors can be taught. If customer orientation is inherent to the individual, then employees with this trait must be attracted into the organization. Despite the well-documented benefits of employing persons with high customer orientation, studies identifying how to attract this type of employee are absent in literature. To fill this gap in the literature, this study seeks to answer the question, how can firms attract frontline employees with high customer orientation?
Both fit theory and the Attraction-Selection-Attrition model agree that a match between a person’s attributes and an organization’s attributes should lead the person to ultimately be more attracted to a company. That attraction should make them more likely to take some action towards gaining a position with the company, such as requesting more information or submitting an application. This project utilizes two studies to address the research question. The first study (n=236) tests how an organization can effectively share their customer-focused identity through recruitment materials. The second study (n=357) tests how the interaction between customer orientation and a customer-focused organizational identity leads to perceptions of person-organization fit. The perceptions of fit then lead to applicant attraction, which should ultimately lead to a potential candidate taking a behavioral action towards the company.
Results provide partial support for the interactive effect of customer orientation on fit. Perception of person-organization fit was shown to increase applicant attraction, a finding which concurs with previous studies. Study two found applicant attraction was a significant predictor of taking an action towards employment with the company explaining 18% of the variance. This project addresses a question long absent in customer orientation literature while also addressing calls for studies on increasing applicant pool quality
Adverse childhood experiences in osteopathic medical students: Implications for wellness, resilience, and future training
Introduction: Disturbingly high levels of burnout such as emotional exhaustion among medical trainees have prompted calls for action focusing on changing approaches to medical education. While many medical students appear resilient, research has identified personal characteristics associated with increased risk of poor mental health, including female gender, and those of ethnic minority. However, a personal history of childhood adversity is a risk factor that remains understudied.Objective: The primary purpose of the study was to assess the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in a cohort of osteopathic medical students and characterize their childhood protective factors. Also, provide a basic knowledge of ACEs and their effects on the brain.Methods: The authors developed a 45-minute talk about ACEs and their effects on the brain as well as an adapted ACEs anonymous survey that was distributed to osteopathic medical students from all levels of training in the Tulsa and Tahlequah campuses. The survey included the 10-item ACE Study questionnaire, a list of childhood protective factors (CPF), and questions to assess students’ perception of the impact of ACEs on their physical and mental health. The medical school’s IRB approved the student survey as an exempt study. The authors computed descriptive and comparative statistical analyses.Results: A total of 88 participants from the Osteopathic Medical School were surveyed, 77.3% from Tulsa and 22.7% from Tahlequah. Of those 12.5% were American Indian, 10.2% black. Demographics race was 67% white, 12.5% Hispanic and 80.7% not Hispanic. Participants came from 60.2% urban and 39.8% rural background. Our surveyed population was equally gender with 56.8% male and 43.2% female. 95.5% of our participants expressed having siblings and 95.5% of them were not fulfilling any caregiver responsibilities, suggesting full-time commitment to medical school.43% of students surveyed scored mild anxiety, 47% moderate anxiety, and 9% moderately severe anxiety. There were no significant differences between females (6.82) and males (6.10) participants, on the average score of GAD7 anxiety self-report.All participants (88 students) completed the ACES questionnaire. Fourteen students (15%) reported zero exposure ACES score, sixteen students (18%) reported at least one ACE exposure, forty-nine students (55%) reported ≥ 4 exposures, and nine students (10%) reported ≥ 6 exposures. The latter were all female. Female medical students showed significantly higher ACE score values than their male counterparts [One-way ANOVA [F=9.68, df(1,86), p<0.01)] post-Tukey HD p<0.001]. No significant correlations were found between ACE scores and GAD7 self-report levels.Before the ACES and brain effects talk, 42% of participants considered that the ACES impact on brain and behavior was important for their knowledge as future clinicians, after the training, 95% of participants considered that ACES have an impact on the brain and behavior, and it is very important to train and educate future clinicians on how to identify ACES.Conclusions: A sizeable group of medical students reported exposure to multiple ACEs. Our findings, if replicated, suggest a significant vulnerability of these medical students to health risk behaviors, particularly in the female population. When asked, the majority of participants demonstrated interest in including ACES training in their curriculum as osteopathic medical students
Probing the dynamic behavior of cyclohexane
Cyclohexane is a textbook model used to discuss the concepts of molecular strain and conformational interconversion in undergraduate organic chemistry courses. The rate of interconversion and/or relative population of conformers can be impacted by temperature, solvent environment, and chemical substitutions on the cyclohexane ring. In this work, we investigate the ability of classical models to capture this behavior. Additionally, we use quantum chemical calculations to help parameterize components of the classical force field and quantify the roles of these components on determining the rates and relative populations. These insights deepen our understanding of cyclohexane's behavior in diverse chemical environments, offering new information about a textbook example.Chemistr
Qualitative analysis of wellbeing among caregivers of children with incarcerated parents
This study investigates the experiences of caregivers of children with incarcerated parents, concentrating on the stressors, health outcomes, and coping mechanisms they encounter. Taking a qualitative approach with a 6-week support group, this research reveals an important view on the experiences of the participants outlined by the stress process model. The results in this study show that the caregivers within this population endure many challenges such as financial stress and stigma while also exhibiting significant resilience. Although this study had a small sample size and lacked in-depth demographic characteristics of the participants, it contributes to existing research by providing valuable insight about this unique caregiver population, emphasizing the need for support services, policy changes, and community awareness. Family centered care among children with sickle cell disease: An analysis of the National Survey of Children’s Health
Background: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) involves several red blood cell disorders affecting nearly 2,000 new babies annually and approximately 100,000 individuals in the United States. SCD requires life-long medical care and symptoms often include recurrent pain crises and early mortality. Therefore, our primary objective is to assess ratings of patient family-centered care (PFCC) among children with SCD compared to children without the disease using the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH).Methods: We extracted data from the 2020-2021 cycles of the survey to identify children with and without SCD and questions from modules related to PFCC. We reported the cumulative average of PFCC questions (scored between 0-4 with higher scoring equating to better PFCC) among groups and compared rates using regression analysis.Results: We identified a sample of children (n = 53, N = 93,669) based on SCD and PFCC using the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) dataset. The cumulative average of PFCC for the SCD was 3.69 (SE = 0.25) and 3.59 (SE = 0.58) for those without SCD -lacking observable statistical significance in binary and adjusted regression models (Coef: 0.10; CI: -0.09-0.30 and Coef: 0.17; CI: -0.06-0.40, respectively).Conclusion: Given there was no significant difference in cumulative PFCC scores between children with and without SCD, patient care for children with SCD is on par with the satisfaction with other children regardless of their increased care needs. However, improvements are still needed to help children with SCD receive more PFCC-focused care given other contemporary studies
Forging partnerships to navigate difficult conversations
Open education invites communities to envision a future in which access to educational opportunities is open, inclusive, and transformative. In the United States, realizing this vision requires intentional attention to issues related to both diversity and equity. The 2023 OpenEd conference track, Social Justice in Open, included 11 presentations across 3 days sharing practitioner experience with diversity, equity, and open practices; this suggests that those advocating for open are exploring their impact on the student experience. Some states, however, have passed legislation prohibiting public higher education institutions from using federal/state funds to support initiatives exploring diversity and equity, preventing participation in conferences, committees, and publications with an emphasis on diversity and equity. Clinical perspective on core outcome sets in type 1 diabetes trials: A web-based survey study
Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) affects nearly 1.9 million individuals in the United States, necessitating daily interventions with an annual cost exceeding $16 billion. Managing T1DM is complex, requiring personalized regimens based on clinical trial findings. Challenges arise from inconsistent outcome measurements across medical domains, prompting a solution:the use of a core outcome set (COS) to standardize measurements and reporting, thus reducing bias. In this cross-sectional study we employ a web-based survey to explore how current COS are understood and applied in T1DM trials. The primary objective is to gather insights from those conducting trials, assessing the current state of COS adoption, and identifying potential areas for improvement. The findings aim to clarify awareness, attitudes, and practices related to the current COS in T1DM research, providing insights for future strategies to enhance COS usage and improve the quality and comparability of T1DM trial outcomes.Methods: In a previous study, we assembled a sample of trials to assess the adoption of the COS for T1D. For this survey, eligible participants are clinical trialists who have been involved in the design, implementation, or analysis of T1D trials within the last five years. The survey is designed to be comprehensive, comprising a set of 20 questions. Participants will provide informed consent, and their responses will be kept confidential and anonymous. The participants' familiarity with the COS will influence the progression of their survey. We will create and distribute the surveys to trialists using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture), a secure web-based application designed for research data collection. Data analysis may involve both descriptive and inferential statistics, and qualitative data will be gathered through open-ended questions.Results: The data is presently in the process of being collected, encompassing descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and qualitative data. Patient demographics and responses to closed-ended questions will be summarized through descriptive statistics. Inferential statistics, such as chi-square tests and t-tests, will be employed to identify relationships between variables or differences among subgroups. Additionally, qualitative data will be obtained from responses to open-ended questions and subjected to thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and patterns.Conclusion: Upon the culmination of this project, our data will provide valuable insights into the utilization and awareness of the core outcome set (COS) among clinical trialists in the realm of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). The findings from this study could establish a basis for future initiatives and interventions geared towards enhancing the incorporation of COS among clinical trialists involved in T1D research. These outcomes may contribute to the standardization of clinical COS reporting, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes within the context of T1D
Influence of short-term dynamic effects on geothermal borefield size
A borefield is often oversized in practice, leading to unnecessary investment costs. This is the result of using a steady-state borefield model to describe the heat transfer inside the borehole, thereby neglecting the dynamic behavior of the fluid, the pipe, and especially the grout. When using a dynamic model (which incorporates transients), the thermal mass of the materials between the fluid and the ground introduces inertia, reducing the heat transfer peak to the ground. Consequently, the borefield size can be reduced while still meeting the predetermined temperature limitations, leading to a significant decrease in investment cost. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of short-term dynamic effects on the sizing of geothermal borefields. This study starts from the Finite Line Source (FLS) model as baseline. This model is corrected to account for the cylindrical geometry of the boreholes and coupled to an explicit 1-D numerical model of an equivalent borehole, thereby extending the scope of the response factors to short time scales. Validation was based on the dynamic Modelica borefield model of the IDEAS Library and experimental borefield data. Results show that the relevance of using a sizing method based on a dynamic model is highly dependent on the thermal load profile. In case a building has a high variation in peak demand and the sizing is not dominated by imbalance a size reduction up to 34.7% is obtained for the case investigated
Pathways to participation: Analyzing the motivations and mechanisms leading to involvement in the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement
The "Woman, Life, Freedom" (WLF) social movement in Iran, which first emerged in September 2022 and continues to evolve, has yet to receive comprehensive attention in Middle Eastern studies and the sociology of social movements. While existing literature reviews have attempted to describe this social movement's goals, reasons for its emergence, or the meaning of its slogan, this research takes a unique approach by examining firsthand data from the protestors who have taken to the streets. It investigates how these individuals relate to and engage in these high-risk collective actions, considering the dangers associated with protesting in authoritarian states, such as the risk of injury, arrest, or even death.
This study addresses the question of “What pathways do protesters follow to participate in the WLF movement?” through an analysis of 27 in-depth interviews conducted with protestors who participated in the street demonstrations between September 2022 and September 2023. Snowball sampling techniques were employed to identify willing participants and open-ended questions were used to explore their reasons for participating and identify the pathways they followed. The data analysis aims to identify common themes in protest framing and participation.
The findings reveal three distinct pathways: "pulled protestors," "pushed protestors," and "persistent opposition protesters." While the former two pathways have been previously identified by Viterna (2006), the latter constitutes a novel contribution to social movements theory, explaining how individuals not fully aligned with the WLF ideology still engage in the movement. Moreover, this study illuminates the factors influencing pathway selection, including encounters with morality police, cognitive liberation, and daily acts of resistance for those pulled into the movement. Meanwhile, critical events, environmental conditions, and being pushed mentally influenced those pushed towards participation.
By investigating these paths and their underlying dynamics, this study contributes to understanding the complexity inherent in grassroots activism in oppressive situations. It sheds light on the various reasons and experiences that motivate people to join the WLF movement
