Need to teach differently: Storied experiences of transformative educators in Nigerian special education
This dissertation, "A Need to Teach Differently: Storied Experiences of Transformative Educators in Nigerian Special Education," explored the narratives of educators who have significantly impacted the special education landscape in Nigeria. The study aimed to highlight the motivations, challenges, and transformative practices of these educators through a narrative inquiry approach, emphasizing their storied experiences.
The research was grounded in the theoretical frameworks of Culturally Responsive School Leadership (CRSL) and Critical Disability Studies (CDS). CRSL is used to deconstruct the systemic obstacles and prejudices that have historically marginalized minority students, prioritizing their experiences and requirements within educational settings. CDS challenges conventional views of disability, striving to dismantle oppressive structures and advocate for social justice for disabled people. This combined lens offered a reflective view of the systemic stigmatization and devaluation of disability over the years in the Nigerian education system.
The study was situated in the context of Nigeria’s educational history, particularly focusing on the colonial legacies that have continued to influence the educational landscape. It examined how the impacts of British imperialism have shaped the notions of productivity and disposability, affecting the accessibility and quality of education for disabled individuals.
Through detailed storytelling, a method in narrative inquiry according to Clandinin (2016), this dissertation captured the lived experiences of six transformative educators who have transitioned from various career paths into special education. Their narratives revealed their personal and professional journeys, the systemic barriers they encountered, and their innovative practices aimed at fostering inclusive educational environments. The findings underscored the importance of intentionality and longevity in the work of transformative educators. They highlight how these educators navigated systemic barriers through improvisation and dedication, advocating for educational reforms that promote inclusivity and equity.
The dissertation concludes with a call for ongoing research and advocacy to support the development of inclusive educational policies and practices. It emphasizes the need for comprehensive reforms that address the historical and systemic challenges in Nigeria's special education system, ultimately aiming to create more equitable opportunities for disabled individuals

Investigation of the two-premise approach to firearm and tool mark identification
Uniqueness of tool marks and firearm examiner competency have been debated within court systems seeking to validate tool mark comparisons. The methodology is partially validated using error rate studies that recruit a cohort of firearm examiners who compare test samples for which ground truth is known. Recently, machine-based assessment has been introduced as an additional metric in evaluating uniqueness of tool marks, strengthening the premise surrounding firearm identification. Coupling error rate studies with machine-based inquiries fully captures the central thesis of firearm identification. There remains a dearth of rigorous tests that combine machine-based technology and error rate evaluations in comparisons of bullets fired from consecutively manufactured pistol barrels. This study objectively examined the uniqueness of tool marks created by similar tools using the Ultra Forensic Technology Quantum 3D Microscope and evaluated how accurately these qualities are identified by firearm examiners in the field. Several error rates were calculated and compared; error rates varied between 0%, and 16.46%, based on treatment of inconclusive responses. The machine-based study provided clear distributions between matching and non-matching comparisons and objective identification and elimination thresholds were calculated using the generated data sets. Both studies confirmed that uniqueness exists between the projectiles used in the study and that the participating firearm examiners were able to distinguish between matching and non-matching sets. Further, the study revealed a substantial leap in discernment and sensitivity of machine-based techniques that suggests an urgency in technological adoption for forensic science
Moment inequalities for equilibrium measures in the plane
The equilibrium measure of a compact plane set gives the steady state distribution of charges on the conductor. We show that certain moments of this equilibrium measure, when taken about the electrostatic centroid and depending only on the real coordinate, are extremal for an interval centered at the origin. This has consequences for means of zeros of polynomials, and for means of critical points of Green’s functions.We also study moments depending on the distance from the centroid, such as the electrostatic moment of inertia.Mathematic

Stroke prediction in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis using electronic health records
Introduction: Medical management of cardiovascular disease has improved since the studies were done to determine the best management for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. With the one-year stroke risk for these patients being similar to the periprocedural stroke risk for treatment, we reviewed 10 years of patient data to determine if machine learning analysis of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) clinical data could help to separate the cohorts with the best outcomes from medical management vs those benefiting the most from operative intervention.Methods: We conducted a chart review of electronic medical records encompassing 872 patients who had available diagnosis, laboratory test, and medication data in the EMR, and who underwent carotid endarterectomy procedures between 2009 and 2022. Based on the chart review, our final cohort included 408 patients who underwent carotid intervention due to stroke and 464 patients who underwent intervention for stenosis exceeding 70%. We used the normalized ICD codes, laboratory tests, and medication groups to build the machine learning models. The patient data was divided into 70% for training and 30% for testing purposes. We employed five distinct machine learning models – Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, XGBoost, Random Forest, and Multilayer Perceptron – and implemented 10-fold cross-validation on the training dataset to optimize the model parameters. To interpret the factors influencing patients' likelihood of stroke as an indication for intervention compared to those who were asymptomatic, we utilized Shapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP).Results: The comparison of the five machine learning models (Figure 1) show that Random Forest gained the best performance of a sensitivity of 0.317, a specificity of 0.906 and an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristics (AUROC) of 0.709. The SHAP visualization (Figure 2) shows the top risk factors which include mediation, diagnoses, and laboratory tests. The analysis on the study cohort including the top factors is shown as Table 1. Data were summarized as frequency and proportion or as mean and standard deviation. The t-test or chi2 test were used to assess the differences for variables between the two groups. The risk factors for symptomatic carotid disease included elevated glucose, kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, smoking status as evidenced by prescribed nicotine medication in category psychotherapeutic and neurological agents. While protective factors included cardiovascular agents, and beta blockers. Some of the risk factors might only be specific to this study cohort, generalizability of these factors to large populations needs further investigation.Conclusion: This study demonstrates that an in-depth machine learning based approach of analyzing the medical record to sort out patients with carotid disease who are somewhat more likely to present with a stroke from those who remained asymptomatic prior to presentation. In addition, it clearly demonstrates the relationship of disease processes which increase the risk for having a carotid embolic stroke and treatment of these risk factors lessening the risk for a stroke. Together with additional analysis of duplex and computed tomography of plaque characteristics, it may help physicians to limit carotid intervention to patients that would benefit the most.Management Science and Information System
Impact of a standing column well on the geochemical and microbiological quality of groundwater
Transitioning to renewable energy sources is crucial in the fight against climate change and ensuring sustainable energy security. Geothermal systems emerge as a promising solution, specifically through the utilization of standing column wells (SCW). These wells, integrated into geothermal systems, offer a greater heat exchange efficiency. However, the implementation of SCWs for heat extraction and injection can impact groundwater geochemistry and bacterial communities. This article explores the repercussions of employing a SCW geothermal system on groundwater for a school in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada. Groundwater sampling was conducted from July 2022 to May 2023 to analyze the geochemical and microbiological aspects of the water quality affected by SCWs used for heating and cooling. This comprehensive study, spanning over a year, revealed some changes in the chemical composition of groundwater, and the absence of several bacterial groups responsible for various bio-corrosion issues, such as iron and sulfate-reducing bacteria. The data also unequivocally demonstrate that the system's operation limits the proliferation of pathogenic groups rather than fostering their multiplication. While the initial findings are promising, this work demands longer-term monitoring. Continued observation over an extended period is crucial for a deeper understanding of the trends in biogeochemical developments
Using publicly available metadata to analyze data sharing practices at Oklahoma State University
There is a growing interest in the use of publicly available metadata to convey scholarly impact as well as inform the provisioning of research services. In this study, we used metadata derived from API queries to three online community databases - DataCite, Crossref, and Unpaywall - to analyze datasets shared by researchers affiliated with Oklahoma State University (OSU). Initially, the dataset comprised of a collection of metadata pulled from DataCite, which included information such as dataset title, DOI, authors, publisher, publication year, and relation to other scholarly works. We streamlined the dataset to highlight OSU-affiliated authors and datasets only, corrected author name formats, and removed duplicates and erroneous entries. We matched OSU author information with data extracted from our university faculty profile system to assign departmental and college affiliations as well as ORCID iDs to each individual, where possible. We extracted, collated, and cleaned meaningful information from a corpus of academic articles that cited these datasets, obtaining article metadata from Crossref and subsequent open access metadata from Unpaywall. Our analysis explored citation patterns, publication trends, faculty/departmental representations, and co-authorship networks among OSU authors. Citation histograms, co-authorship networks, and publication timelines will be utilized to provide an improved understanding of data sharing at OSU. Insights from the visualizations will reveal trends in citation frequency, collaborative networks among researchers, and publication dynamics over time. The results of this research will contribute to the understanding of scholarly communication dynamics within the OSU academic community, improve the quality of services offered by research support personnel, and offer a basis for future research exploring data sharing practices within specific academic institutions.Librar
Fluid connection and the family body in Michael Ondaatje's Running in the Family
Fluids and the body are common themes of Michael Ondaatje’s poetry and fiction. Running in the Family, Ondaatje’s fictive memoir, explores the rumors, stories, and memorabilia that make portray the past of his family to uncover the connections he lost after leaving Sri Lanka as a child. In this vein, I argue that Ondaatje moves beyond the typical structure of the family history and constructs instead an anatomical map of his family, creating a body for the Ondaatje in which to place himself, establishing connections between family members through the images of bodily fluids and water. Fluidity fills the gaps between the family and the prodigal son and serves as the touching point of Ondaatje to his lost relatives. This argument is supported by the disjointed structure of the narrative and the imagery of the body implanted throughout the physical book. The result of this structure and imagery is the creation of bonds between the body and the family history that transcend time and the individual, culminating in a cultural and inherent grasp of the family body
