Analyzing adverse childhood experiences data from 2010-2018 for homicide, robbery, and rape within Oklahoma
Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and subsequent adult violent behaviors have been associated with the formation of either short or long-term psychological, behavioral, physical, and emotional attributes. However, ACEs are not a rare phenomenon and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as of 2018, approximately 1 in 6 adults have been exposed to four or more ACEs. This study analyzed a database known as Oklahoma ACEs Surveillance Index System) OASIS which was established to record ACEs score data for the years 2010 to 2018 as well as county rates for Oklahoma. This database includes publicly available information concerning ACEs encountered for those individuals before the age of 18. This data was then compared to the Oklahoma’s homicide, rape, and robbery rates using the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to gain rates in each county for comparison and analysis against OASIS and ACEs data. The analysis empirically concluded no statistical significance within the ACEs relationship between OASIS data compared to the NIBRS data for homicides, rapes, or robberies from the years 2010 to 2018 for the State of Oklahoma
Arginine Vasopressin (AVP), and Oxytocin (OT) on the brain sound localization circuits of rodents with different social behavior strategies
Arginine vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXT) are both nonapeptide hormones known to regulate social behavior and are synthesized primarily in the hypothalamus. Although many studies have revealed the roles of AVP and OXT in mammals with different social behavior strategies, relatively few studies have provided a detailed analysis of the number of cells that contain AVP and OXT in different brain areas, especially the brain sounds localization circuits. Here we used immunohistochemistry to provide a detailed analysis of the number of vasopressin and oxytocin cells in the auditory brainstems regions (LSO, MSO, and MNTB) of small mammals with three broad social classifications including solitary (Neotoma floridana, Dipodomys ordii, sigmodon hispidus), monogamous (Microtus ochrogaster, Onychomys leucogaster, Peromyscus maniculatus), and highly social (Rattus norvegicus, Cynomys ludovicianus, Mus musculus) species. We expected to see significantly more expressions of vasopressin and oxytocin cells in the lateral superior olive (LSO), the medial superior olive (MSO), and the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) of highly social mammals compared to solitary-like mammals. We also expect that highly social mammals will have significantly larger MSO, LSO, and NMTB compared to both monogamous and solitary mammals. This study will extend previous findings, showing the size and approximately estimate the number of vasopressin and oxytocin cells in different sound localization brain pathways.Integrative Biolog
Clinical perspective on core outcome sets in stroke trials: A web-based survey study
Background: Clinical trials are fundamental for advancing medical knowledge, and Core Outcome Sets (COS) serve as a vital tool for reducing variability and in standardizing outcome measurements across various areas of research. Given the widespread prevalence and profound consequences of strokes as the second leading cause of death globally, integrating COS in stroke clinical trials holds promise for more beneficial and efficacious interventions. This study aims to explore the adoption of COS within the stroke research community, identifying limitations and avenues for improvement. The insights gained will guide future efforts to enhance the understanding and applicability of stroke clinical trials.Methods: The participants comprised of clinical trial professionals who have been involved in stroke trials over the past five years. Investigators reached out to participants via email to distribute a comprehensive web-based survey. The survey, conducted via REDCap, will gather demographic information and assess participant familiarity with COS in stroke clinical trials. The selection of COS was informed by the Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials (COMET) Initiative database. The survey will be open for responses for a duration of eight weeks, with bi-weekly reminders sent via email to encourage participation. Participants will be required to provide informed consent before commencing the survey.Results: Data is currently in the collection phase of this study. Analysis of survey responses will include: (i) descriptive statistics to summarize patient demographics and responses to close-ended questions, (ii) inferential statistics, such as chi-square tests and t-tests, to identify relationships between variables or differences among subgroups, and (iii) qualitative data, which will undergo thematic analysis to discern recurring themes and patterns.Conclusion: Upon completion of this endeavor, our data will not only provide new insights into how clinical trialists use and understand COS, but also may serve as the foundation for future initiatives and interventions. These efforts will be aimed at encouraging stroke clinical trialists to integrate COS into their research practices. The resulting outcomes have the potential to promote standardization in the reporting of clinical COS, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes pertaining to stroke patients

Analysis of mathematical ideas and their representation in undergraduate economics
This dissertation is divided into three distinct topics. Significant research has been done to understand students’ ways of thinking and ways of understanding in undergraduate mathematics education. However, less research has been done with applications contextualized specifically to economics. As economics relies significantly on mathematical ideas, understanding the use of mathematics can be used to inform instruction by mathematics educators teaching introductory courses geared to economics. I provide a characterization of the ways of thinking about mathematical ideas used in undergraduate economics textbooks. Additionally, I provide a report on the effects of student success rates following reforms to redial mathematics education at OSU

Access to mammograms in Oklahoma
Oklahoma has the 4th highest cancer mortality rate nationally, with cancer being the 2nd leading cause of death in Oklahoma, with breast cancer being the most common cancer among females (Oklahoma State Department of Health, 2021). Oklahoma State Department of Health reports that breast cancer is the second most common site for cancer (Oklahoma State Department of Health, 2021). Currently, mammograms are the screening tool of choice in detecting abnormalities in breast tissue. If a mammogram detects suspicious tissue, further diagnostic imaging is recommended for a diagnosis. As of September 18, 2023, there are 117 facilities in Oklahoma, according to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, 2023). Of the 77 counties in Oklahoma, 47 currently have mammogram facilities, and 30 do not have mammogram facilities, leaving many citizens without access due to socioeconomic issues, access to specialty care, and a significant distance to the nearest facility as limiting factors. Oklahoma has three screening programs: the Oklahoma Cherokee Nation program, the Kaw Program, and the Take Charge! Program (Oklahoma State Department of Health, 2021). The county health ranking mentions that 35% of Medicare enrollees have been screened for breast cancer in Oklahoma, with 37% being the national average (University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, 2023). Reviewing current literature has shown several gaps in information in rural Oklahoma, which could be attributed to high mortality. Two questions to consider mediating some of these issues are: 1) would the introduction of a mobile mammography unit decrease the mortality rate in Oklahoma, knowing several counties lack facilities to screen for breast cancer. 2) Is there a lack of prevention and screening knowledge in rural Oklahoma, contributing to higher mortality rates
Wild whiches in Oklahoma! The use of connective which in Oklahoma English
Historically, which is a relative pronoun; it not only connects two clauses, but also creates a gap that refers back to something in the main clause. However, speakers of British, Australian, and northeastern American English can use which forms that are only connective– they have no gap (Burke, 2015; Loock, 2007a; Loss & Wicklund, 2022; Loss, n.d.). For example, in the sentence from Loock’s (2007a: 75) work, “And she decided to move out which I think she’s crazy,” which has neither an antecedent nor a gap. Broader claims about the use of which in American English require data from other dialect regions. Oklahoma is a perfect candidate because it contains both Midland and Southern dialects. My research explores the use of which in Oklahoma English and compares it to Loss’s work on northeastern American English. To capture conversational Oklahoma English, I created an automated transcription of The Oklahoma Today Podcast and categorized each use of which as a relative pronoun or connective which. The corpus contains 85,431 words, and 156 instances of which. Of these, 15 (10%) are connective. This is comparable to Loss’s corpus in which 53 (15%) which are connective X2 (2, N = 474) = 2.7217, p = 0.098. The subdivision of the types of connective which in each corpus are also strikingly comparable, X2 (2, N = 67) = 1.6314, p = 0.44. This study suggest that Oklahoma podcast use of connective which is similar to NE American English podcast use of connective which and therefore could be a feature of general American English. Few throats to choke: On the current structure of the internet
We study the expected number of real zeros for random linear combinations of orthogonal polynomials. It is well known that Kac polynomials, spanned by monomials with i.i.d. Gaussian coefficients, have only (2/π+o(1)) log n expected real zeros in terms of the degree n. If the basis is given by the orthonormal polynomials associated with a compactly supported Borel measure on the real line, or associated with a Freud weight defined on the whole real line, then random linear combinations have n/√3 + o(n) expected real zeros. We prove that the same asymptotic relation holds for all random orthogonal polynomials on the real line associated with a large class of weights, and give local results on the expected number of real zeros. We also show that the counting measures of properly scaled zeros of these random polynomials converge weakly to either the Ullman distribution or the arcsine distribution.Computer Science
Exploring the self-efficacy of Oklahoma School-Based Agricultural Education teachers: A mixed-methods approach
This mixed-methods study investigates the self-efficacy of Oklahoma School-Based Agricultural Education (SBAE) teachers concerning their instructional practices across three constructs: FFA, Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), and classroom/laboratory instruction. Despite existing research on SBAE teachers' self-efficacy and pedagogical content knowledge, there remains a gap in understanding their efficacy in balancing and integrating these three components into their programs. The study aims to fill this gap by exploring the personal and professional characteristics of Oklahoma SBAE teachers and assessing their self-efficacy using Tschannen-Moran’s and Woolfolk Hoy’s (2001) Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES). Specifically, it seeks to compare the self-efficacy of alternatively certified (AC) and traditionally certified (TC) teachers across instructional practices, student engagement, and classroom management. Quantitative objectives involve describing the characteristics of SBAE teachers, assessing their self-efficacy levels, and comparing efficacy between AC and TC teachers. Meanwhile, qualitative inquiries delve into understanding why teachers rate their efficacy as they do, their perceptions of their role in facilitating their total SBAE program, and how they describe their efficacy across the domains of FFA, SAE, and classroom/laboratory settings. Limitations of the study include its focus solely on Oklahoma SBAE teachers, the reliance on self-reported data which may introduce biases, and the relatively small sample size of AC teachers. Despite these limitations, the findings will provide valuable insights into the self-efficacy of Oklahoma SBAE teachers, informing efforts to enhance agricultural education programs and teacher training initiatives
