Interaction of exhalation jets with airflow in an airliner cabin
This study investigates how exhalation flows generated by passengers in an airliner interact with the airflow in the cabin and jets emitted from personalized overhead vents (gaspers). The spread of airborne pathogens like SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses through exhalation events poses a significant health risk to passengers. Although several studies have examined exhalation jets in isolation, a gap remains in understanding their characteristics in the confined space of an aircraft cabin, particularly how they interact with the airflow from gaspers. To simulate exhalation flows generated during coughing, sneezing, and talking, a computer controlled exhalation flow simulator was developed using an electromechanical piston-cylinder apparatus connected to a 3D-printed, subject-specific human airway model, consisting of a mouth-to-glottis section and trachea. This model is connected to a mouthpiece shaped for each activity and then attached to a dummy, referred to as the index passenger. We conducted two-dimensional, two-component particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments inside an MD-80 airliner cabin. We varied gasper operational configurations (all closed, all opened, and a single gasper opened) and seating positions of the index passenger (middle, aisle, window), with passive (no exhalation) human dummies positioned in neighboring seats. Experiments were conducted at a cabin pressure equivalent to 2,000 feet above sea level, with the environmental control system operational to maintain standard cabin conditions. Results reveal that a opening only a single gasper is most effective in redirecting exhalation jets downward by increasing vertical momentum flux towards floor vents and decreasing horizontal momentum flux. When all gaspers are closed, exhalation jets are directed towards the window along the port-starboard axis, in the same direction as cabin ventilation driven air circulation. When gaspers are used, exhalation jets disperse along this axis, spreading towards both the window and the aisle. The jet width and angle of deflection indicate that gaspers can increase the dispersion of exhalation jets, particularly when the index passenger is seated in the aisle. To further investigate this finding, we employed data-driven agent-based modeling to examine particle deposition under different gasper configurations. The results show that gaspers promote dispersion of particles along the port-starboard axis and increase downward movement. These findings can aid in the design and operation of ventilation systems in airliner cabins and other enclosed spaces to minimize the dispersion of infectious particles

Assessing the impact of public health interventions on COVID-19 cases and deaths in the United States: A retrospective time series analysis
This study evaluates the relationship between COVID-19 cases and deaths and public health interventions in Oklahoma. Utilizing data from the CDC and the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the research employs a retrospective time-series analysis of measures such as isolation, quarantine, mask mandates, travel restrictions, and closures, contextualized within the timeline of the pandemic from March 2020 to April 2021. The study assesses the timing and effectiveness of these interventions, aiming to provide an understanding of the optimal application of public health strategies during a pandemic. The findings suggest that early interventions, such as lockdowns and mask mandates, significantly reduced COVID-19 transmission; however, relaxing restrictions often resulted in surges in cases. A critical insight from the study is the age-related disparity in COVID-19 outcomes, where older adults consistently exhibited high mortality rates despite representing a smaller proportion of overall cases over time. This disparity highlights the ongoing need for targeted protective measures for high-risk groups, even as broader restrictions are lifted. The study also emphasizes balancing health interventions with economic and social impacts, especially during phased reopenings. While vaccines have notably reduced case numbers among older adults, mortality rates remain high, indicating a continual need for public health vigilance, booster campaigns, and improved access to healthcare for vulnerable populations. The research supports integrating multiple non-pharmaceutical interventions early in a pandemic and adopting adaptive, evidence-based public health policies that can be quickly scaled for future health crises
Effect of woody plant encroachment by eastern redcedar on the abundance of ticks and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens
Tick-borne pathogens are the most common vector-borne diseases in the United States, accounting for over 75% of nationally reported cases. Over the past two decades, several tick-borne diseases, including Ehrlichiosis and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis, have increased. Additionally, two relatively new pathogens, Panola Mountain Ehrlichia and Borrelia lonestari, have emerged, posing risks to human health. As the distribution of medically important ticks and pathogens continues to increase, it is crucial to understand the factors driving their expansion. To address this gap, we examined how woody plant encroachment by eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana, ERC) influences tick ecology by assessing the abundance of three tick species, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, and Amblyomma maculatum, in grasslands undergoing ERC encroachment in Oklahoma. We also investigated the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens detected within these ticks and evaluated whether pathogen prevalence varies across different stages of ERC encroachment. Our study found that ERC encroachment in the southern Great Plains creates favorable conditions for higher densities of A. americanum and D. variabilis compared to open grasslands. Furthermore, distinct species-specific patterns emerged, with tick densities significantly correlated with different levels of ERC encroachment. Although species-specific trends exist, our results show that early-stage ERC encroachment supports the highest tick densities compared to open grasslands and more densely encroached areas. While no significant differences were found in the prevalence of four Rickettsia species or B. lonestari across encroachment stages, Ehrlichia prevalence in A. americanum varied significantly among stages. This suggests that the most effective strategy to reduce tick populations in grasslands is to prevent ERC encroachment early or remove it before it progresses. Landowners, managers of public and private lands, and public health officials should be aware of the health risks associated with ERC encroachment and consider new educational and management protocols to protect their communities

Crip languaging: A linguistic and rhetorical analysis
This dissertation is made up of three articles which examine the language disabled people use for themselves through the lenses of linguistics, metaphor, and rhetoric to find the unique language tools we use.
The first article utilizes embodied rhetoric to examine the social media response on Twitter to Sia’s film Music through study of the #ActuallyAutistic hashtag in 2020 and 2021. This study shows how autistic people use métis on Twitter to push back against the anti-autistic rhetoric of Sia’s film. The project is significant because it goes beyond studies of access to examine what happens when disabled people are given space and agency and demonstrates the importance and power of social protest and autistic métis rhetoric which change what it means to be rhetorical.
The second article is an examination of the metaphors women use to talk about living with chronic conditions, and how these metaphors contrast with extant metaphor research, as well as the metaphors we culturally use to talk about chronic conditions and disability. This study found that participants used the metaphor “CHRONIC CONDITIONS ARE A CYCLE,” a heretofore unresearched conceptual metaphor, particularly regarding disability and health. This research has implications for how health care providers talk to patients and use metaphor, especially for the growing number of chronically ill people with long-COVID in the U.S. and around the world.
The final article uses Conversation Analysis (CA) and Crip Linguistics to examine how women with chronic illnesses identify with/out disability. I find that many only use this terminology when they are in need of accommodation at work or school, which may be related to the stigma associated with “disability” and the societal expectation of normality and abledness.
As a whole, this dissertation research demonstrates the unique features and rhetorics of disability, neurodivergence, and chronic illness. The three papers together demonstrate ways that disabled people crip language and “alter and reinvent the world to make access happen” through language (Henner and Robinson, 2023), using tools like conversational preference, rhetoric, metaphor, and social media activism, which can change how society sees and treats disabled people
Prevalence of depression among home health care recipients
Objectives: More than 15 million individuals receive home health care for chronic conditions. This care allows them to maintain a level of independence and self-sufficiency. Even though poor mental health can negatively impact health outcomes, little research has been done on the mental health of these individuals enrolled in home health.Methods: Utilizing NHIS survey years 2019-2022, we ran a cross-sectional analysis to determine rates of depression among individuals who indicated that they utilized HHC services, based on their sociodemographic statuses and diagnosis, as well as their rate of depression by condition based on whether they utilized HHC services.Results: HHC recipients were significantly more likely to be depressed if they reported being female, age 55-64, low income, low educational attainment, American Indian/Alaskan Native (AIAN), Hispanic, or lived in a rural area. HHC recipients were more likely to be depressed than their non-HHC recipient counterparts (likely secondary to a more advanced disease process), except for individuals with dementia. Among all HHC recipients, a history of dementia, COPD, stroke, diabetes, and chronic heart disease was associated with higher reported depression, whereas a history of cancer did not see an increase in depression.Conclusions: This data demonstrated that certain subsets of HHC recipients report higher rates of depression. The results underscore the need for better integrated mental health care services for recipients of HHCs. Further, the financial burden of HHC, which may have an additional impact on stress and depression, emphasizes the need for expanded insurance coverage and accessibility of these services
