    Exploring professional identity differences: An exploratory study of instructional design (ID) and learning experience design (LXD) practitioners

    The study explores practitioners' professional identities of practitioners in Instructional Design (ID) and Learning Experience Design (LxD). Using a qualitative and exploratory approach, it investigates how design practitioners perceive and differentiate between the roles, theories, and methodologies of ID and LxD and how these perceptions influence their professional identities. Grounded in an interconnected identity/professional identity (I/PI) model, this research aims to bridge the gap between the two fields by identifying overlapping principles and distinctive features. It examines how practitioners apply theoretical constructs and design practices to create compelling learning experiences, highlighting the evolving distinctions and connections between ID and LxD. The study emphasizes that ID is based on systematic teaching methods that prioritize content delivery and measurable outcomes. In contrast, LxD focuses on a holistic, user-centered approach that integrates user experience (UX) and immersive technologies to enhance engagement. Through surveys and interviews, practitioners shared insights reflecting the varied disciplines and perspectives influenced by the specific requirements of each field. The implications of this research inform the development of academic curricula by providing insights into integrating ID and LxD skills, effectively preparing future professionals. Additionally, the study offers practical recommendations for creating job roles that accurately reflect these positions' competencies and interdisciplinary nature. This research enhances our understanding of professional identity in both ID and LxD, advocating for a more unified approach that leverages the strengths of each discipline to improve the design and effectiveness of educational experiences

    Use of different imaging modalities in acute abdominal pain in pregnancy

    Background and Purpose: Abdominal pain during pregnancy is quite common with a wide differential diagnosis including both obstetric and non-obstetric pathologies. Diagnostic imaging modalities used in addition to history and physical examination (PE) are often ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We sought to find the role of these tests in pregnant patients who presented to our emergency department with acute abdominal pain. Previous studies examined the efficacy of MRI as a first diagnostic imaging modality in the setting of acute abdominal pain in pregnancy concerning for acute appendicitis without conclusive objective findings.The objective of this study is to determine the ability of ultrasound and physical exam findings in correctly identifying renal or hepatobiliary pathology in pregnant patients presenting with acute abdominal pain compared to the use of MRI.Materials And Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 136 pregnant women with acute abdominal pain who presented to the emergency department (ED) at Ascension Genesys Hospital, Grand Blanc, MI. PE, US, MRI, gestational age, comorbid conditions, and length of stay were reviewed. Statistical analysis was done using T-test and chi-square test. Institutional review board approval was obtained.Results: Our study found that the mean age was 26.8 (±5.4) years and the mean gestational age was 16.5 (±8.4) weeks. Of those patients, there were 59 patients who had an US and 47 with subsequent MRI performed. The US demonstrated abnormal findings in 8 patients for renal or hepatobiliary pathology; 2 patients demonstrating cholelithasis, 1 demonstrating choledocholithasis, 1 with “prominent biliary sludge and small stones,” and 4 with mild to moderate hydronephrosis. The MRI demonstrated abnormal findings in 11 patients; 7 with mild to moderate hydronephrosis, with 1 commenting on “mild perinephric fluid, with the middle 1/3 R ureter compressed between the enlarged gravid uterus and psoas muscle”, 1 with choledochal cyst, 1 with cholelithasis, 1 with cholelithasis and stricture of common bile duct, and 2 with hepatic lesions. Of those patients, 3 underwent a procedure for their acute pain including biliary stent placement, ERCP, and cystoscopy with ureteral stent placement. Of those 3 patients who underwent surgical procedure, all had abnormal US confirmed with abnormal MRI.Conclusion: Previous studies have demonstrated that in the setting of acute abdominal pain in pregnancy and positive PE highly suggestive of surgical pathology, especially in the setting of RLQ pain and suspicion for appendicitis, US had limited value and patients should proceed to MRI. This data suggests that US is an appropriate step in work up with gravid patients with acute abdominal pain. Ultrasound is a cost effective and reliable screening tool for renal or hepatobiliary pathology that is safe during pregnancy. The determination for if an MRI is necessary should be based on clinical suspicion and provider preference. Ultimately the decision for surgical intervention should be determined by clinical suspicion. Further studies would benefit from a higher power

    Companionship of knots and the smith conjecture

    This paper studies the Smith Conjecture in terms of H. Schubert’s theory of companionship of knots. Suppose J is a counterexample to the Smith Conjecture, i.e. is the fixed point set of an action of Zₚ on S³. Theorem. Every essential torus in an invariant knot space C(J) of J is either invariant or disjoint from its translates. Since the companions of J correspond to the essential tori in C(J), this often allows one to split the action among the companions and satellites of J. In particular: Theorem. If J is composite, then each prime factor of J is a counterexample, and conversely. Theorem. The Smith Conjecture is true for all cabled knots. Theorem.     The best keying protocol for sensor networks

    Many sensor networks, especially mobile networks or those networks that are deployed to monitor crisis situations, are deployed in an arbitrary and unplanned fashion. Thus, any sensor in such a network may end up being adjacent to any other sensor in the network. To secure the communications between every two adjacent sensors in such a network, each sensor x in the network needs to store n − 1 symmetric keys that x shares with the other sensors, where n is the number of sensors in the network. This storage requirement of the keying protocol is rather severe, especially when n is large and the available storage in each sensor is modest. Earlier efforts to redesign this keying protocol and reduce the number of keys to be stored in each sensor have produced protocols that are vulnerable to collusion. In this paper, we present a collusion-proof keying protocol where each sensor needs to store (n+1)/2 keys, which is much less than the n−1 keys in the original keying protocol. We also show that in any collusion-proof keying protocol, each sensor needs to store at least (n−1)/2 keys.Computer Science

    Exploring the winner-loser effect on emotion in crickets

    Individual variation in behavioral traits, commonly referred to as ‘personality,’ is exhibited in numerous animal species, including invertebrates. The specific personality trait of exploration tendency may be affected by positive/optimistic or negative/pessimistic emotional states. Animal contests can induce these emotions, as winning against one’s opponent increases ‘optimism’, while losing causes ‘pessimism’; these states can then affect behavior in other contexts. Previous studies demonstrate that house crickets (Acheta domesticus) experience this winner-loser effect in fights, thus we investigated if a cricket’s exploratory behavior is influenced by the outcome of its contest. We predicted that after a fight, winners would exhibit increased exploratory behavior due to an optimistic emotional state, while losers would show decreased exploratory behavior due to a pessimistic emotional state. Exploration tendency was measured as an individual’s latency to exit a shelter. Crickets then participated in an aggression contest, with opponents chosen to be smaller or larger so that focal individuals either won (n=33) or lost (n=31), respectively. Latency to exit was again measured after the contest, as well as 48 h later to examine the persistence of winner-loser effects on exploration behavior over extended time periods. Latencies for control crickets (n=40) were measured at the same time points, but controls did not engage in a fight. In one of two years, winning crickets’ latency times decreased following the contest, while losing crickets’ latency times were not significantly affected. This suggests that individuals’ emotional states were changed by the experience of winning a fight, which affected exploration tendencies, while losing a fight does not have an effect on exploration tendency. These data on invertebrate emotions have important implications for human health by allowing for future studies on the mechanisms behind mental states
