Implementation of a Citizen Science Program to Assess Chytridiomycosis (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) Prevalence in Amphibians across Oklahoma, USA
Global amphibian populations are declining rapidly, due largely to infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). The Herpetology Department at the Sam Noble Museum has screened for Bd prevalence among amphibian communities across Oklahoma for over five years, providing ongoing data about the disease’s prevalence and distribution. Recently, the museum partnered with other Oklahomans through a citizen science project allowing participants to sample their local amphibian communities for Bd. Our project targeted K–12 students in Oklahoma to promote curiosity in science and to foster an interest in pursuing career paths in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The multi-year baseline citizen science dataset we obtained shows a lower Bd prevalence compared to samples collected from trained researchers. In this study, we juxtapose the two datasets and make observations on the feasibility of the citizen science program. Results from the program suggest that kit return rates were average for a project of this scale, and many participants could correctly identify amphibian species. Our findings indicate that the citizen science initiative is successful in increasing statewide amphibian disease sampling range and heightening the public’s awareness of this global amphibian epidemic
Understanding Collegiate Flight Students' Perceptions and Realities of Depression and Anxiety
As a result of recent incidents and other circumstances, shared questions and potential problems related to mental health and aviation have surfaced within collegiate aviation programs. The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of collegiate aviators' attitudes towards mental health in aviation, how they manage their mental health, how these practices may transition into their flying careers, and whether the current FAA aeromedical standards are professionally written to protect these and other aviators. The researchers conducted a mixed methods study to identify a common knowledge base of collegiate flight students' perceptions and realities related to depression and anxiety. Study participants were bachelor's degree seeking flight students from University Aviation Association (UAA) member collegiate flight programs. The received responses were analysed through the perspective of four research questions. In summary, gathered responses indicated that students believe there is a perceived benefit to not disclosing or ignoring mental health and fitness issues, safeguarding their own mental health is one of their primary concerns, and there is a considerable number who would leave the aviation industry if they could no longer fly. Additionally, most students agree that change would be beneficial, as it relates to the current FAA medical certification process.
Examining Moral Conduct in Aviators Through the Lens of Immanuel Kant’s Perfect and Imperfect Duties
This paper focuses on Kantian ethics, explicitly exploring the implications of Kant's perfect and imperfect duties within the aviation sector. It analyzes how these ethical principles apply to pilot behavior and their impact on safety, professionalism, and trust within flight operations. This paper argues for a culture of integrity and responsibility among aviation professionals and highlights the criticality of ethical leadership concerning pilot performance. Additionally, it outlines potential areas for future research, including empirical studies on pilot behavior and the development of targeted ethical training programs for flight crews, aiming to enhance ethical standards and practices in aviation

Historical Land Cover Along the Deep Fork River: An Analysis of Vegetation Composition and Distribution of the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, Circa 1897
North American vegetation has been extensively modified by human activity. Restoring the landscape to past conditions is a strategy for species conservation, but this requires access to reliable data that describes those conditions. Here we use plat and bearing tree data collected during the Public Land Survey of 1897 (PLS) to describe the vegetation at the Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge. We digitized five township plats and recorded data for all bearing trees. Of the six land cover types, forest (67%) and grassland (29%) were the most extensive. Surveyors recorded 708 individual bearing trees. Post oak (Quercus stellata Wangenh.) (199 stems), red oak (Q. rubra L.) (140), and blackjack oak (Q. marilandica Münchh) (92) were the most common trees. Some proportion of the trees identified as red oak were most likely black oak (Quercus velutina Lam.) and/or Shumard oak (Quercus shumardii Buckley var. shumardii). Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) was not recorded as a bearing tree but was recorded in the line notes. At the time of the PLS survey, the study area exhibited modification. Although the PLS began in Oklahoma in 1870, the Creek Nation was surveyed beginning in 1896
Growth Patterns and Ages of Trees from Martin Park Nature Center, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma
This paper provides insight into ages and patterns of radial growth from mature trees at Martin Park Nature Center, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma. A total of 80 trees were sampled and crossdated using dendrochronology from the three most common genera at Martin Park Nature Center: Quercus, Celtis, and Ulmus. The oldest trees at the park were Q. macrocarpa and C. laevigata with individuals dating back to the 1920s and 1930s. A pulse of C. laevigata recruitment occurred in the 1960s that likely reflected changes in land-use as the property transitioned from private ownership to the City of Oklahoma City. A sequence of growth suppressions and releases was identified in C. laevigata that is related to park maintenance and forest development at the park
