Motives of social rapists
Get PDFThis paper examines the self-reported accounts of61 incarcerated criminals who admit to serial rape. Respondents were interviewed using a methodology employing other convicted felons as interviewers. Results Show that lust and "righteous rape" were the most salient objectives of these experienced rapists. These findings reveal, too, that physical violence was selective and used sparingly. In light of these findings, additional research should be conducted addressing rape avoidance
Investigating Retention Solutions for Women in Aviation Education and Flight Training
Get PDFDespite advancements, women remain underrepresented in the aviation industry, particularly in pilot roles. Addressing this disparity, a university initiated the Women’s Ambassador Mentoring Program (WAMP) to enhance the recruitment and retention of female aviation students pursuing an aeronautical science degree. Concerns persist about insufficient support systems hindering progress. This study employs a transformative mixed methodology, utilizing both publicly available quantitative data and qualitative insights from program-involved students. The research assesses the growth in female aviation students compared to certified pilots, examining the university's enrollment and retention of female students over time. Emphasizing the necessity of a supportive culture, the study highlights the importance of connectivity and positive relationships for current and aspiring women pilots in sustaining their presence in the aviation industry
Safety climate of aircraft maintenance personnel in Nigeria
Get PDFThis study used a safety climate questionnaire adapted from Commercial Aviation Safety Survey (CASS) as datacollection instrument to investigate safety climate factors of aircraft maintenance personnel in Nigeria aviationindustry. The CASS questionnaire was modified to accommodate the peculiarities of the safety climate in maintenancerepair and overhaul organization (MRO)using four main factors and twelve sub factors. Multiple regression modelwas used as tool to analyse the data on safety climate of aircraft maintenance personnel. In the first case scenario,the multiple regression results using error tendency against the linear combination of the safety climate factorsindicated that the equation containing the 15 variables accounted for 41.2 percent of the variations in error tendencyin aircraft maintenance in MRO personnel that is significant at the 5 percent level. In the second case scenario, themultiple regression results using error tendency against the linear combination of the 7 safety climate factorsindicated that the factors accounted for about 27.3 percent of the variations in error tendency in aircraft maintenance.It is recommended that focus should be shifted by management to response and feedback on reported safety issues,safety fundamentals, reward system, employee empowerment, and management involvement that are unfavorable inranking in this study. This shift in focus is expected to drive relevant and necessary changes that can help improvesafety with the MROs
A Feasibility Study for Implementing and Evaluating an Internet-Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy Intervention in Rural School Settings and its Impact on Adolescent Mental and Behavioral Health
Get PDFThrough a mixed-methods research design, the researchers explored the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of an internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (iCBT) program in a rural school setting. The program was developed to address the mental and behavioral health needs specific to adolescents in rural communities. In collaboration with a rural school district, students aged 13-18 participated in focus groups to provide insight into their experience of the youth iCBT program. Researchers also utilized results from the Beck's Youth Inventories-Second Edition (BYI-2) and the Adolescent Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI-A2) to determine the efficacy of the youth iCBT program. Results of the study indicate that adolescents prefer to seek support services from a person in the school setting when they face challenges to their wellbeing. Additionally, results suggest there are no statistically significant changes to participants' levels of anxiety, depression, or substance use upon completion of the youth iCBT program
It's Not the Notes That Make it Jazz: Why Structure is Important in Jazz, the Natural Sciences, and Q Methodology
Get PDFOur world is full of algorithms that operate within social media, face identification, et cetera. Is the algorithm the secret to uncovering meaning and understanding within Q methodology or are algorithms also full of subjectivity? Stephenson predicted the problems others would have with Q methodology. Steven Brown suggested that one must get “a feeling for the organism” during interpretation, yet some Q researchers seem to seek formulaic approaches to their Q studies, sans a sense of feeling for the subjectivities uncovered. In this way, these formulaic researchers seek a set of algorithms to perform Q studies much like novice physics students often approach problem solving. However, as a famous jazz bassist stated, “It’s not the notes that makes it jazz … it’s not music without structure.” This assertion was the impetus for addressing how Q, jazz music, and natural science use structure to frame exploration, interaction, and inquiry. Thus, the various structures within the stages of any Q study can help frame any study but in a way that is always new and inclusive while embracing inquiry and exploration
Content Validation in Q Methodology: : A Roadmap to Developing Transparent Data-Collection Tools Based on a Multi-Region Pilot Process
Get PDFIn the last two decades, the use of Q methodology has expanded across disciplines, raising new debates around its theoretical and practical principles. While qualitative researchers have stressed the importance of pilot studies to ensure the content validity and rigor of data collection tools, many Q methodology studies do not mention whether and how this work is accomplished. Questions and comments on this topic are also recurrently raised on the Q methodology Network listserv, demonstrating an interest within the research community. Drawing on lessons learned in developing a data collection tool for a multi-region study using Q methodology in the context of U.S. agriculture, we demonstrate how a thorough and clear pilot study can strengthen both the quality and transparency of the research process. Furthermore, our work provides a roadmap for piloting and validating data collection tools and procedures that, applied within the framework of Q methodology, improves the rigor of the research more generally
The Faces of Putin: An Application of Q and the Single Case
Get PDFThis article discusses the potential Q Methodology – particularly the use of a study based on a single case – could play in assisting foreign policy analysts and specialists in one of their most challenging tasks: anticipating future actions of other state or nonstate actors. The task is inherently difficult as those future actions usually are dependent on policy decisions by key leaders – decisions that may not been finalized or are subject to change. In nearly all cases, analysts must make assessments of foreign leaders in the face of information that is scarce, conflicting, and ambiguous. The study uses a 36-item Q sample drawn from Margaret Hermann’s trait analysis approach to assessing leadership style. This study of Russian leader Vladimir Putin explores the insights Q can provide via a single-case study. Only publicly available information was used for this study. The study explores the extent to which, in the subjective view of the participant, Putin’s leadership style has changed since he first assumed the Russian presidency in May 2000. The study examines Putin’s leadership style at three potentially significant inflection points: upon becoming president, the 2014-2015 Russian military interventions in Crimea/eastern Ukraine and Syria, and the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
