    An Analysis of COVID-19 Infection Rates among Native American Tribal Nations in Oklahoma

    COVID-19, the infectious disease caused by the variant of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, has had a significant impact in the United States. However, recent research indicates that among demographic groups, Native Americans are one of the most severely affected. This study utilized the Supreme Court case McGirt v. Oklahoma to analyze COVID-19 cases and deaths among areas in seven tribal nations in Oklahoma to determine how they have been affected by COVID-19 compared to the general population of Oklahoma. For the analysis, descriptive statistics and incidence and case-fatality rates were evaluated. Time series plots were created to illustrate the rates of new cases. Finally, multiple linear regression models were used to predict COVID-19 deaths from cases, population, and tribal status. The analysis showed that, in general, areas within tribal nations do not have significantly different COVID-19 case and death rates from the state of Oklahoma. Since these results contradict previous findings, they indicate both the need for and importance of research on COVID-19 among Native American populations

    Participant Engagement and Data Reliability with Internet-Based Q Methodology: A Cautionary Tale

    Q methodology traditionally involves the sorting of stimuli such as textualphrases or images that are then analyzed with statistical software. Coupled with thesequantitative techniques, Q methodology often involves in-depth interviews andinterpretative methods. In spite of these mixed-methods strengths, scholars are turningto internet-based platforms for administering Q studies, allowing for a greater range ofaccess to a larger pool of potential participants. In this article, we examine issues relatedto participant engagement and the potential impact of low-quality sorts on datareliability. These issues are particularly germane for studies utilizing online platformsfor administering Q methodology studies, where the distance between researcher andparticipants is increased. Our analysis involves the generation of random Q sorts as aproxy for low-quality data and explores the influence of introduced low-quality data onfactor loadings and interpretation. In our exploratory study, we find that theintroduction of even a small number of low-quality sorts can seriously influence factorloadings; in particular, these random sorts alter the composition of Q sorts that load onless dominant “minority†factors and, ultimately, the interpretation of factors. Based onthese findings, we propose an approach that allows Q methodology researchers toexplore further the quality of their data to detect low-quality sorts and offer suggestionsfor improving participant engagement in online studies

    Consumer Willingness to Fly on Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Aircraft

    For any novel means of transportation to thrive, its success hinges on the willingness of prospective customers to adopt the new system. To explore consumer willingness to participate in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) by flying on electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, an online survey of 975 individuals in the U.S. was conducted using an existing Willingness to Fly (WTF) scale designed specifically for assessing the acceptance of new aviation technologies and services. Most respondents expressed interest in flying on an eVTOL but planned to wait a few months after service starts before participating in AAM. Overall, the most frequent responses were “agree†and “strongly agree" with being WTF in eVTOLs. The survey offered four different eVTOL flight scenarios, with respondent WTF decreasing as weather or conditions deteriorated. Images of specific eVTOL models were used to assess WTF on each aircraft type. The vehicle with the most unique type of powerplants resulted in the lowest reported WTF. The study also analyzed the WTF of flying on eVTOLs across various demographic attributes. Results showed significant differences between genders, with males having a higher average WTF score. There was a weak negative correlation between WTF and age. Married respondents had the highest WTF, followed by single persons. WTF varied significantly across types of employment, income, and educational attainment. The highest WTF scores were found in the $50,000-74,999 range, with urban respondents having higher WTF than those in suburban and rural locations. Safety and cost were the top two concerns among all levels of WTF. The combination of employment status and marital status was found to be most correlated to WTF. By comprehending the inclination of consumers to travel in eVTOL aircraft, policymakers, manufacturers, and stakeholders can garner valuable insights into market demand, consumer preferences, sustainable transportation, and environmental considerations. Identifying characteristics that support or inhibit customer acceptability can assist in overcoming resistance to adoption and lead to more effective implementation of eVTOLs. Public outreach and education may be warranted to promote familiarity and passion among potential users, increasing interest and involvement. Recommendations for future research include repeating the study with an international sample and exploring willingness to pay for AAM services

    A Comparative Analysis of Learning Outcomes in Introductory Unmanned Aircraft Systems Education Across Three Instructional Modalities

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, educational institutions transitioned traditional face-to-face classes to online or remote modalities to maintain academic continuity and revenue. This shift has persisted in some cases due to reduced overhead and increased flexibility. Additionally, compressed or accelerated courses have become popular for students seeking expedited degree completion. Previous research, including studies by Miller and Bliss (2023, 2024), indicated no significant difference in learning outcomes between traditional and compressed classes based on final exam scores and Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). In 2010, the FAA emphasized the importance of identifying effective educational methods to enhance aviation safety. This study aims to determine whether traditional face-to-face instruction is the most effective modality compared to accelerated and online options for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) education. Given the rising popularity and certification of UAS, understanding the optimal instructional modality is crucial. This quantitative study examines the performance outcomes of students in a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification preparatory course delivered via three modalities: traditional 16-week face-to-face, 7-week accelerated face-to-face, and 16-week asynchronous online. The study analyzed two classes per modality over three years, using the same content and instructor. Performance was measured by quiz scores and the FAA UAG knowledge exam. Findings from this research will inform best practices for UAS education, contributing to the broader discourse on instructional modalities in aviation training. The results could have significant implications for the design and delivery of all aviation courses, potentially influencing curriculum development and instructional strategies in collegiate aviation programs

    Characterization of Mycobacteriophage Fulbright isolated from Oklahoma soil

    Increasingly unsuccessful antibiotic remedies against emerging drug resistant bacteria make research on alternative treatments paramount. In this project, we characterized the mycobacteriophage Fulbright, evaluated the phage’s efficacy against M. smegmatis and M. abscessus, and explored the possibility of using it for phage therapy applications. We found that Fulbright is stable at pH range 4-9 and temperatures ranging 20-60°C. We observed a 90-minute latent period and a lytic burst plateau 3 h after adsorption. We observed that Fulbright can infect M. abscessus at a concentration of 1x109 PFU/mL and higher, but loses efficacy at concentrations lower than 1x109 PFU/mL. In an effort to demonstrate the feasibility of using mycobacteriophage Fulbright in phage therapy applications, we electrospun Fulbright with polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofiber to serve as a model wound dressing and observed PCL_Fulbright successfully infecting M. smegmatis
