Effect of chemical modifications and electron beam irradiation on properties of corn cob filled chitosan biocomposite films
Doctor of Philosophy in Materials EngineeringThe chitosan (CS)/corn cob (CC) biocomposite films were prepared via solvent casting method. The effects of CC content, crosslinking agents such as glutaraldehyde (GLA), salicylaldehyde (SAL), epichlorohydrin (EP) and phthalic anhydride (PTH), and chemical modification of CC with acrylic acid (AA) on tensile properties, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), morphology study, gel fraction and biodegradation properties of CS/CC biocomposite films were investigated. The effect of electron beam irradiation on properties of unmodified and modified CS/CC biocomposite films were also studied. The results indicated that the tensile strength, elongation at break, Tonset, Tdmax and residue of unmodified CS/CC biocomposite films decreased as increases of CC content. However, the modulus of elasticity, gel fraction, weight loss of enzymatic and soil biodegradation of unmodified biocomposite films increased with increasing CC content. The morphology of unmodified biocomposite films showed poor CC dispersion and interfacial interaction in CS matrix. The effect of different crosslinking agents such as GLA, SAL, EP and PTH in biocomposite films have higher tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, Tonset, Tdmax, and residue in comparison with unmodified biocomposite films. The gel fraction of all modified biocomposite films higher than unmodified biocomposite films. Whereas, the modified biocomposite films exhibited decrement in elongation at break and weight loss of both enzymatic and soil biodegradation. The treated CC with AA improved the tensile strength, elongation at break, Tdmax and char residue of biocomposite films, but reduced the modulus of elasticity and weight loss in enzymatic and soil biodegradation of biocomposite films. The gel fraction of treated biocomposite films with AA was slightly improved. The SEM micrograph of all modified biocomposite films showed better filler dispersion and adhesion in CS matrix. The tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and Tonset, Tdmax of irradiated modified CS/CC biocomposite films with SAL was higher than unirradiated biocomposite films. Meanwhile, the residue of irradiated modified biocomposite films with SAL reduced when the temperature up to 500 oC. The weight loss of both enzymatic and soil biodegradation of irradiated biocomposite films were lower than unirradiated biocomposite films. The morphology of
irradiated modified biocomposite films indicated brittle surface. The FTIR spectra of all modified biocomposite films showed the changes in functional groups in all modified biocomposite films. From all chemical modifications, the irradiated modified CS/CC
bicomposite films with SAL showed the highest tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, gel fraction, Tonset and Tdmax. The elongation at break and weight loss of enzymatic and soil biodegradation of irradiated modified biocomposite films with SAL were the lowest compared to others modified biocomposite films
Prediction of students academic achievement in UniMAP using data mining approach
Master of Science in Engineering MathematicsThe main objective of this research is to predict the academic achievement of the students in UniMAP who
will be succeed, will be continued their study in higher level and also students whose
need help in their study. Besides that, the specific objectives of this research are to
identify the factors which influence the academic achievement of the students, to
develop the decision tree model for prediction of the academic achievement of the
students and lastly, to evaluate the performance of the decision tree model. Our research
methodology started with the collection of students’ data from UniMAP since 2002
until 2012. Then, continued with the implementation of the decision tree model by using
the C4.5 algorithm to develop the model for predicting the students’ academic
achievement in UniMAP. C4.5 algorithm is a successor of ID3 algorithm which had
been invented by J.R Quilan in 1986. In this research, JMP Pro 11 software has been
used in developed the decision tree model. In addition, the finding of this research
stated that there were five factor variables had influenced the academic achievement of
the students in UniMAP. The factor variables were gender, age, entry qualification,
entry CGPA and results from semester 1 and 2. The response variable was the result of
graduate students. Moreover, from the result of the decision tree, the knowledge
representation has been interpreted into decision rules using IF-THEN rules. From the
predictive model, there were 25 decision rules which had interpreted. Later, the rules
had been implemented into a simple academic prediction system for the students in
UniMAP. This simple prediction system could help new students to predict their final
result in the earlier semester. Some of the significant finding from this research, found
that students who in between 24 to 30 years old had graduated with excellent result
than younger and older adult learners. Female students from this university had
graduated with more excellent result than the male students. Lastly, the finding of this
research found that students who entry the university with the Matriculation
qualification graduated with more excellent result than Diploma and STPM
Computational Fluid Dynamic analysis of thermal characteristics on the PLCC package: influence of velocity and heat flux
Link to publisher's homepage at https://aset.unimap.edu.myThermal management is essential in electronic components and devices. Overheating of the component leads to malfunction. This study investigates the effects of velocity and heat flux on the Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC) during the thermal cooling process via simulation analysis. Computational fluid dynamics software simulated the cooling process of PLCC. The size of the PLCC used is 2.72 cm × 2.72 cm × 0.38 cm. The effect of heat flux and velocity on temperature distribution, flow pattern, and pressure distribution was studied. The findings indicated that as the approach air velocity increased, the temperature of the packages decreased. The result also shows that the static pressure decrease along with the package when the air velocity increases. The simulation results are expected to understand better the cooling process of PLCC in the thermal management of
electronic components and devices
Plastic flow analysis of hand drill casing using injection moulding
Link to publisher's homepage at https://aset.unimap.edu.myInjection moulding process is widely used in manufacturing and producing daily plastic products. The gate location and sprue significantly influence the stability of molten plastic flow, especially for complex products. Without the proper gate location and parameters, the plastic flow will cause insufficient filling and defects. This paper analyses the effect of gate location and sprue design during the filling and packing process through the simulation method. The simulation software was utilised in the current study. The plastic casing of the power tool hand drill was considered for the injection moulding process. The molten plastic behaviour was visualised via the filling contour. The pressure, shear stress, and volumetric shrinkage were also analysed. The result obtained shows that the molten plastic flow behaviour depends on the selected parameters. The selected parameter significantly changes a few variables chosen where gate locations are the most significant to the plastic flow
Shopping guarantee and customer e-loyalty: a case study of the Shopee guarantee
Link to publisher's homepage at https://ijbt.unimap.edu.myIn order to maintain their advantage in the market, the vast majority of businesses now sell their products digitally. Customers' shopping habits have been affected, which has had a ripple effect on the retail landscape around the world. E-commerce
has, however, given rise to several issues, such as online purchasing fraud, which has
the potential to damage customer loyalty. As a consequence of this, providing aftersales assurances is a great strategy for developing customer loyalty. This is due to the fact that all companies want their customers to be pleased with the products or
services they purchase from them. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between E-service quality and E-recovery in terms of the loyalty of customers who utilised shopping guarantees. A web-based questionnaire was used
to collect data. The survey was completed by three hundred sixty-two (362) Shopee customers who had previously made use of the Shopee guarantee. According to the findings, there is a significant relationship between E-service quality and E-recovery
with customer E-loyalty. This study shows that shopping guarantees can increase consumer loyalty because they directly impact the long-term sustainability of the supply chain. It is suggested that online shopping platforms companies consider
offering shopping guarantees to increase customer loyalty among online shoppers and bring in more customers
