    Junior faculty perspectives on the academic environment: A call for development and onboarding

    Background: One challenge in dental education is new faculty members can be hired with limited teaching experience or understanding of pedagogy. Recent publications document increasing initiatives of faculty development in US and Canadian dental schools. This study evaluates full-time faculty perspectives of their develop and academic environment. Methods: A 33-item questionnaire distributed to senior administrators and forwarded to faculty, collected data on demographics and satisfaction, utilizing a 5-item Likert scale, multiple choice, and binary yes/no questions. Responses were descriptively and statistically analyzed utilizing an analysis of variance, chi-square, and two-sample t-test. Results: There were 183 faculty respondents (37.7% male/62.3% female), age ranges were 20–29 (2.2%), 30–39 (53.5%), and 41–49(44.3). Respondents reported race/ethnicity: Caucasian (60.7%), Asian (19.1%), Hispanic (12.6%), Black/African American (5.5%), two or more races (2.2%), and Native American 0%. Length of employment was significantly associated with primary responsibility (p = 0.0023), recent publications (p \u3c 0.0011), and short-term intent to remain in academia (p = 0.046). There was a statistically significant difference between age and satisfaction with professional development (p = 0.0411), achieving career objectives (p = 0.0151), well-being (p = 0.0492), access to resources for scholarly interests (p = 0.0114), communication (p = 0.0058), and assessment training (p = 0.0249). Non-Caucasian faculty reported greater dissatisfaction with being treated respectfully (p = 0.0302), departmental commitment to diversity and inclusion (p = 0.0075), and departmental cooperation/teamwork (p = 0.0323). Conclusions: A significant number of junior faculty have interest in academic dental careers. Institutions should invest in improving onboarding and professional development. Improve the early experiences of faculty, and foster diversity and inclusion and faculty well-being

    An interdisciplinary approach to orthodontic treatment of a mutilated Class III malocclusion with mini-implants, dental implants, and an autotransplant

    This case report demonstrates the interdisciplinary treatment of a 24-year-old female. Her skeletal discrepancy, anterior crossbite, mutilated dentition, and midline deviation made it challenging to achieve satisfactory treatment results, especially without major orthognathic surgery. This article thoroughly discusses the decision-making process associated with various treatment alternatives, the biomechanical considerations with temporary skeletal anchorage devices, and the detailed operational process of dental implant restoration and autotransplantation. Clinical Significance: Orthodontic treatment aims to obtain better facial and dental esthetics, achieve functional occlusion, and improve oral health. Treatment of patients with a mutilated dentition requires interdisciplinary teamwork from a group of professionals with various types of expertise. Orthodontists should be the navigator that generates the tooth movement and space redistribution, thus facilitating the subsequent functional rehabilitation under a well-organized occlusal architecture. Autotransplantation offers an economical and biologically-friendly opportunity to replace a missing tooth

    Morphometrics of the Spinal Cord and Surrounding Structures in Alligator mississippiensis

    Understanding the fluid dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid requires a quantitative description of the spaces in which it flows, including the spinal cord and surrounding meninges. The morphometrics of the spinal cord and surrounding tissues were studied in specimens of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) ranging from hatchlings through adults. Within any size class of alligators (i.e., hatchlings), along the axial length there are significant differences in the size of the spinal cord, meninges, and vertebral canal; these differences can be used to define discrete cervical, thoracic, lumbar and caudal regions. When compared across the range of body sizes in Alligator, every structure in each spinal region had a distinctive growth rate; thus, the physical arrangements between the structures changed as the alligator grew. The combination of regional differentiation and differential growth rates was particularly apparent in the lumbar meninges where a unique form of lumbar cistern could be identified and shown to decrease in relative size as the alligator ages. This analysis of the spinal cord and surrounding tissues was undertaken to develop a data set that could be used for computational flow dynamics of the crocodilian cerebrospinal fluid, and also to assist in the analysis of fossil archosaurs

    Cytokine array analysis of mediators produced by human macrophages stimulated with Trichomonas tenax

    The incidence of oral colonization by the protozoan Trichomonas tenax correlates with gingival inflammation and periodontitis in humans. To determine whether T. tenax might contribute to inflammation by eliciting cytokines from human cells, differentiated THP-1 (dTHP-1) macrophages were cultured with live or sonicated T. tenax trophozoites, and the conditioned media were assayed for 36 different mediators by a membrane-based cytokine array. Scanning densitometry of the membranes revealed that live T. tenax trophozoites stimulated secretion of interleukin-8 (IL-8), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), IL-1β, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) from dTHP-1 macrophages. T. tenax lysates stimulated release of IL-8, MIF, and IL-1ra. Despite often being classified as a commensal organism, T. tenax elicited a wider variety of cytokines than the human urogenital pathogen, T. vaginalis, which elicited only IL-8 and MIF production from dTHP-1 cells

    AOASM Position Statement on Esports, Active Video Gaming, and the Role of the Sports Medicine Physician

    Electronic sports, or esports, has a global audience of over 300 million fans and is increasing in popularity, resulting in projected revenue of over $1 billion by the end of this past year. The global pandemic of 2020 had little to no effect on these increasing numbers because athletes have been able to continue to engage in sports because of its electronic nature and fans have been able to follow them virtually. Esports has been recognized as an organized sport by the International Olympic Committee, the US National Collegiate Athletic Association, and several secondary school athletic associations within the United States. In addition, professional teams have been established in several major cities within the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. With the growth of esports, the necessity of incorporating esports medicine into the practice of sports medicine physicians has become paramount. Esports can be played on a monitor or screen and played using physical activity in what has become known as active video gaming. Within both of these platforms, there have emerged certain conditions unique to esports. There are also certain conditions seen in other sports applicable to esports athletes. This document will review the evaluation of the esports athlete, introduce conditions unique to these athletes and review common conditions seen in esports, discuss diagnostics used in the evaluation of esports athletes, introduce treatment options for conditions unique to esports and review those for commonly seen injuries in esports, discuss prevention of injuries in esports, and introduce a framework for the future development of esports medicine that can be introduced into the daily practice of the sports medicine physician

    Volunteer Leadership in the American Physical Therapy Association: A Phenomenological Study of Early Career Physical Therapists

    Objective: Professional associations rely on the work of volunteer leaders to serve their members. Little is known about the experiences of individuals who choose to seek and participate in these volunteer roles in the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experience of early career professionals engaged in volunteer leadership in APTA. Methods: The study used a phenomenological design to explore the experience of volunteer leadership by novice physical therapists. Physical therapists holding a volunteer leadership position in APTA and in the first 7 years of clinical practice were recruited using purposeful sampling. One-on-one semistructured interviews were conducted. Following transcription, interviews were analyzed and coded using the constant comparison method. Results: Thirteen physical therapists participated. Eleven themes emerged: (1) internal factors that facilitated volunteerism - Passion, Internal drive, Always involved, Protect and advance the profession; (2) external forces that facilitated and sustained volunteer leadership - Professional role models, Meeting the leaders, Someone asked, Support of others; and (3) behaviors that sustained their involvement - Learning while doing, Future plans, and Encouraging others\u27 involvement. Conclusions: Novice physical therapists who volunteer for leadership roles within APTA have a passion for protecting and advancing the profession that leads to their decision to volunteer. Other members including faculty and experienced leaders in the association facilitate their initial volunteerism and help to sustain their engagement. Support from employers, including time off and flexible schedules, and making plans for future involvement were crucial to their continued volunteer activity. Impact Statement: Changing demographics and a limited understanding of volunteer leadership could leave APTA with a limited pool of leaders into the future. Understanding the reasons early career professionals volunteer in APTA can help develop more effective strategies to recruit and retain these leaders

    Characteristics of Patient Encounters for Athletic Training Students during Clinical Education: A Report from the Association for Athletic Training Education Research Network

    Context: To enhance the quality of patient care, athletic training students (ATSs) should experience a wide variety of clinical practice settings, interact with diverse patient populations, and engage with patients who have a wide variety of conditions. It is unclear in what ways, if any, ATSs have diverse opportunities during clinical experiences. Objective: To describe the characteristics of patient encounters (PEs) ATSs engaged in during clinical experiences. Design: Multisite panel design. Setting: Twelve professional athletic training programs (5 bachelor\u27s, 7 master\u27s). Patients or Other Participants: A total of 363 ATSs from the athletic training programs that used E∗Value software to document PEs during clinical experiences. Main Outcome Measure(s): During each PE, ATSs were asked to log the clinical site at which the PE occurred (college or university, secondary school, clinic, or other), the procedures performed during the PE (eg, knee evaluation, lower leg flexibility or range of motion, cryotherapy), and the patient\u27s diagnosis, with the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code (eg, S83.512A knee sprain, anterior cruciate ligament). Results: A total of 30 630 PEs were entered by 338 ATSs across 278 unique clinical settings. More than 80% of PEs occurred in college or university and secondary school settings. More than half of the diagnoses were categorized as affecting the lower body region. Examination and evaluation procedures and application of therapeutic modality procedures each contributed approximately 27% of procedures. Conclusions: It was surprising that ATSs were not gaining experience in all clinical practice settings in which athletic trainers commonly practice. Our data suggest that students may be consigned to working with patients who have more frequently occurring injuries, which may not prepare them for the realities of autonomous clinical practice. These findings indicate that directed efforts are needed to ensure that ATSs are provided opportunities to engage with diverse patient populations who have a variety of conditions in an array of clinical site types during their clinical experiences

    High School Athletes’ Health-Related Quality of Life Across Recovery After Sport-Related Concussion or Acute Ankle Injury: A Report From the Athletic Training Practice-Based Research Network

    Background: Evaluating adolescent athletes’ perceived health status after a sport-related injury can provide important direction for health promotion strategies and preparation for a successful return to play. Furthermore, comparing specific injury types regarding their impact on athletes\u27 perspectives of their global and domain-specific health perceptions allows for a more detailed understanding of an athlete\u27s experience while also providing avenues for targeted treatment strategies. Purpose: To compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between high school athletes who had sustained either a concussion or an acute ankle injury and compare how these injury types related to their global and domain-specific HRQOL across recovery. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Electronic medical records created by athletic trainers working in 32 high school facilities were examined, and records from 1749 patients who sustained either a sport-related concussion (n = 862) or ankle sprain (n = 887) were screened for inclusion. HRQOL was assessed by self-reported scores on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) at 2 time points after injury (T1 = 0-2 days; T2 = 11-29 days). A 2-way group by time analysis of variance was conducted to examine differences in trajectories and disrupted areas of HRQOL. Results: Overall, 85 patient cases (46 concussion, 39 ankle sprain) fit the inclusion criteria. Each injury group exhibited improved global and domain-specific PedsQL scores between their 2 measured time points (P \u3c.05), indicating recovery. However, domain-specific comparisons revealed that at T2, patients who had sustained an ankle sprain reported significantly lower PedsQL physical functioning scores (78.3 ± 19.3 vs 86.2 ± 15.7 for concussion; P =.005), whereas patients who had sustained a concussion reported lower scores related to their school functioning (80.0 ± 20.0 vs 90.8 ± 12.7 for ankle sprain; P =.006). Conclusion: The study results indicated that in high school athletes, the trajectories and disrupted areas of HRQOL stemming from a sport-related injury may be influenced differentially when comparing concussions with ankle sprains
