Linguistic analysis of written language used by young adults with and without invisible disabilities
Spoken and written language patterns are subtle aspects of behavior that may differ between those with and without invisible disabilities. One tool to measure language is the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC), a computer-based measure comprising a variety of components (emotional, cognitive, and structural) present in oral and written language samples (Pennebaker, Boyd, Jordan, & Blackburn, 2015). Using LIWC analyses, previous research suggests a significant difference in written language usage amongst individuals with depression compared to those without depression (Brockmeyer, et al., 2015). Unfortunately, a limited amount of research has been conducted using LIWC analyses to examine written language usage in individuals with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; Newton, et al., 2009). Nguyen and colleagues (2014) discovered that, when compared to other online communities, individuals in online autism communities tend to exhibit a language style that suggests lower valence thus indicating lower overall moods. The present study explored the relationship between invisible disability and written language patterns using LIWC analysis. We examined responses to open-ended, discussion board prompts presented to participants in a Qualtrics survey. Participants included 11 individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, 20 individuals with depression, and 131 individuals with no disability. As expected, language differences were observed between groups. Individuals with ASD tended to use more analytical thinking and articles while those with depression used more personal pronouns, 3rd person plural, common adverbs, cognitive processes, insight, causation, discrepancy, and informal language
A cholera model linking between-host, within-host and environmental disease dynamics
Cholera is an acute intestinal illness caused by infection with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. The dynamics of the disease transmission are governed by human-human, environment-human, and within-human sub-dynamics. In this paper, a model is presented to incorporate all three of these dynamical components. The model is divided into three subgroups where the dynamics are analyzed according to their respective time scales. Specifically, the within host system incorporates the interaction of virus and immune cell interaction with the vibrios. For each subgroup, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a DFE (Disease Free Equilibrium) by calculation of the Basic Reproduction number R_0, when applicable, and the existence and uniqueness of a positive EE (Endemic Equilibrium) solution. We also discuss the conditions needed to achieve local and global stability in each system. Finally, we combine the three smaller models together and discuss the existence and uniqueness of a DFE and EE for the full system
Power system stabilizer design using out of phase torque correction method
The need for power system stabilizers (PSS) in interconnected power systems has become essential to damp low frequency oscillations and enhance the system stability. Conventional PSS design techniques utilize local measurements, hence allowing the use of single machine infinite bus method to tune the PSS parameters. However, these techniques do not provide a direct method to calculate the PSS gain. In this work, an explicit expression based on frequency analysis was derived that relates the PSS function and generator electrical torques. It showed that the torques developed at poorly damped modes have large imaginary component that do not contribute to damping. The PSS is tuned to correct the phase of these torques, thus, provide positive damping. The proposed method was examined on several test systems namely two-area four-machine, IEEE9, and IEEE39-bus system. Besides successfully improving the system damping, the proposed method was found to be robust at different loading conditions
Development and assessment of predictive spatial models for a rare Tennessee anuran: Barking treefrog (Hyla gratiosa)
In Tennessee, the Barking Treefrog (Hyla gratiosa) is listed as both rare and vulnerable, and more field data is needed to elucidate its distribution. Predictive modeling using the program MaxEnt provided results for models that guided field sampling to potential presence locations. From April-August 2017, 126 sites (63 historical; 63 predicted) were visited monthly and sampled for frog calls according to a standardized protocol. Field results revealed H. gratiosa’s auditory presence at 23 out of 63 historic sites and at nine out of 63 predicted sites. While other predictive models were also generated, MaxEnt was demonstrated to be most precise in predicting presence likelihood. Weighted regression analysis showed that shrub/scrub and woody wetland coverages were the most positively associated with presence. The results suggest that H. gratiosa is not as relatively abundant as some frog species throughout ecologically relevant landscapes in Tennessee
A method for characterization of single-event latchup technologies as a function of geometric variation
Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology is the dominant integrated circuit (IC) technology in modern electronics systems. As CMOS comprises of p-channel and n-channel transistors, there are parasitic PNPN paths that act as cross-coupled bipolar transistors capable of creating low-impedance paths between the power supply rails known as the “latchup” state. Latchup is destructive and requires a power cycle to restore operation. Latchup can be stimulated by ionizing radiation such as a high-energy proton or heavy-ions from deep space, resulting in a significant vulnerability in CMOS space systems. The sensitivity of an IC to single-event latchup (SEL) depends on various process parameters as well as design geometry. This work presents a method for the characterization of the geometric effects of CMOS layout on SEL. The dominant geometric contributors to the overall SEL sensitivity include: (1) substrate contact-to-source spacing (PWNS), (2) well contact-to-source spacing (NWPS), and (3) source-to-source spacing (SS)
Utilizing mHealth technology to increase HPV knowledge and HPV vaccine uptake in adolescents: A qualitative study
This study sought to identify communication preferences for tailoring mHealth interventions on HPV and what information in messaging should be included to increase HPV education, vaccination and schedule adherence among youth. A convenient sample of 210 students answered an online survey. Participants were 18 – 25 years old (88%), female (85.6%), Caucasian (60%), never been diagnosed with HPV (92.9%) and completed all 3 doses (61.6%). Our respondents were initially hesitant to use SMS text messages and mobile apps for HPV primarily due to privacy, memory and data cost concerns but thought the personalization options would increase message saliency and information trustworthiness if sent by a healthcare provider. Healthcare providers should use the information to tailor HPV and sexual health interventions
Cigarette litter leachates: a statistical study of elements in freshwater and saltwater
Cigarette butts are the most common item found in coastal litter cleanups as approximately 4.5 trillion smoked cigarette butts are discarded into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can leach toxic heavy metals and nicotine along with other compounds from tobacco combustion. Past research in our lab has analyzed elements leached from cigarette butts into freshwater. The cigarette butts consisted of smoked and unsmoked butts that were soaked varying periods of time, and at different pH levels to identify the relationship of these variables to the amount of metal leached. The elements analyzed were Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ti, and Zn. The purpose of this research was to use additional saltwater data and to study the statistical differences in elemental leaching between the two types of water. The data was also compared to determine whether a significant difference exists in the elements leached from smoked and unsmoked cigarette butts. Since Al, Ni, Pb, and Ti were below the LOD in saltwater, no comparisons were made for these elements. It was determined that most comparisons between freshwater and saltwater were significantly different, with an exception of a few comparisons. For Mn, Sr, and Zn, all the comparisons were significantly different. However, for Cd there was only one significantly different comparison. Since the concentrations of the freshwater were generally higher than the saltwater concentrations this means cigarette butts have a higher impact on freshwater sources, affecting aquatic life. This study emphasizes the importance of addressing the cigarette butt litter issue and serves to supplement the lack of literature on the subject
Impact of spousal work restrictions and number of dependents on expatriates’ work life and overall life satisfaction
Purpose Our understanding of the challenges and the broader role of spouses of expatriates is extremely limited. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of spousal work restrictions and number of dependents on expatriates’ work life and overall life satisfaction using qualitative and quantitative analyses Design Data were collected from 416 Indian informational technology professionals working in USA. Hypothesized conditional process models were analyzed using the PROCESS tools. Findings Spousal work restrictions and number of dependents created complications in personal life of expatriates, which interfered with their work life resulting in lower overall life satisfaction. We identified six core classes of challenges faced by spouses of expatriates: financial issues, frustration, loss of respect/low confidence, boredom, social isolation, and domestic tension. Older expatriates were able to better manage the responsibilities associated with number of dependents. More importantly, unlike adjustment, the issues associated with spouse work restrictions did not seem to improve with age or length of time in the USA. Originality Although media outlets have from time to time brought to light the issues faced by spouses of expatriates, the present study provides more credible and complete findings by conducting a qualitative and quantitative research study. To our knowledge this is the first study that has investigated the complications experienced by expatriates’ due to the work restriction (more specifically, visa related) issues faced by the spouses of these expatriates. Factors that affect help-seeking: Examining racial differences between Whites, Asians, and African Americans
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that impact intentions to seek mental health services as well as to explore how they may vary based on race. A total of 172 participants were asked to fill out questions that measured variables related to help-seeking. Results indicated that Asians had significantly higher levels of self-stigma, lower levels of benefits of self-disclosure, and lower intentions to seek help than both Whites and African Americans. Multiple regression analyses showed that self-stigma was a significant predictor of intentions for all three groups, while benefits of self-disclosure was only significant for Whites and Asians. The model was found to be most predictive for Asians and least predictive for African Americans
Serving the People of the Tennessee Valley: Perspectives on Learning, Growth and Management Internships
The purpose of this project was to examine three students’ different paths and perspectives of internships at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the Learning, Growth and Management Department (LG&M). The need for this project was highlighted by a lack of internship practicum-based information presented in past research conferences. This poster first examines the different teams and functions of those teams that the interns were apart of during their internships at TVA. Then the project identifies types of jobs that I-O Psychology Masters candidates can expect to be qualified and/or recruited for within the constraints of TVA and the LG&M department. Next, key projects, and SIOP competencies strengthened through these projects, will be discussed. Finally, recommendations for students seeking internships and companies seeking to recruit top quality I-O students are given. In sum, while this project only examines three students’ paths at one company and in one department, we believe this information will help I-O psychology students identify internships that can develop important competencies that SIOP has designated as necessary to be a successful I-O psychology practitioner and offer helpful recommendations for students and companies alike
