    Developing an Analytics Strategy to Describe, Diagnose, and Predict Workplace Safety Outcomes

    Evidence-based management practices that include big-data mining strategies have become commonplace in many areas of organizational management and have been shown to be effective. However, organizations have yet to fully take advantage of these analytic methods to improve their occupational safety. The proposed study aims to address this gap by developing a strategy to utilize data that organizations are already collecting to describe, diagnose, and predict workplace safety outcomes. The five proposed predictor variable categories are production, procedures, hazards, behaviors, and participation. Data will be collected from a large American Fortune 500 company that specializes in the production of advanced materials, chemicals, and fibers for everyday purposes

    Use of stereolithographic 3D printing for fabrication of micro and millifluidic devices for undergraduate engineering studies

    Undergraduate STEM student performance is greatly benefited by supplementary, hands-on laboratory experience. Micro and millifluidic devices provide a multitude of opportunities for interactive study of concepts and phenomena encountered in nearly every field of engineering, as well as in chemistry, biology, and other disciplines. Unfortunately, due to the cost and difficulty of standard micro and millifluidic device fabrication methods, many undergraduate students do not have access to these versatile educational tools. Luckily, 3D printing offers an inexpensive and simple solution to this issue. This work aims to demonstrate the capability of stereolithographic (SLA) 3D printing for the fabrication of micro and millifluidic devices for use in undergraduate engineering studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC); the ultimate goal of the work is to enhance student performance though the active study of concepts encountered in courses and undergraduate research projects. The work presented in this paper details the fabrication and analysis of various micro and millifluidic devices produced with a Formlabs Form1+ SLA printer, the initial results obtained through the use of the printed devices, and future plans for the continued integration of this technology into courses and undergraduate research at UTC. Initial experiments with these devices were intended to demonstrate 3D printing capabilities and potential utilization of the printed devices in studies and demonstrations related to fluid mixing, biodiesel production, and droplet generation. These applications were chosen for their relatability to topics covered in various engineering courses and potential for use in research at UTC

    Drama as a tool for addressing cultural stereotypes

    In children’s drama and literature, Native Americans are rarely represented fully and accurately. Generalizations and stereotypes have lead to severe misunderstandings and an underappreciation for Native American cultures, even in areas rich with their history. This research study sought the efficacy of classroom drama strategies on classroom learning, particularly using storytelling to further children’s understanding of Native American culture. The results show that drama and storytelling can be effective ways to teach children about other cultures by keeping students engaged, promoting participation, and allowing students to make connections and explore learning on their own

    Traipsing the Old Stomping Grounds is a novel-in-stories about the quest for love and belonging in the life of Emily, a twenty-something year-old who depends on relationships with boys/men as her only resource for fulfillment of these desires. Based on real life events but with fictionalized characters and places, each story in the novel explores a relationship Emily forges while living on her own in small town Oklahoma during the 1980s, where Mackie\u27s, a fast food restaurant, and the people who work there become the center of her life. My craft essay explores the methods of imposing plot on life through the lens of Robin Hemley’s Turning Life into Fiction, and discusses how the craft elements of point of view and structure play significant roles in adapting life into fiction in my own work as well as in the works that have influenced my creative process

    Faculty perceptions of consensual sexual relationships between university faculty and students

    This study examined faculty responses concerning consensual sexual relationships between faculty members and students. Using self-report data collected from 166 university faculty members, this analysis sought to determine what variables predicted whether faculty respondents believed that a difference existed in defining consensual sexual relationships and sexual harassment. Results indicated that belief in power differentials between faculty and students as well as whether the faculty member held either a full-time or part-time position on campus influenced respondents’ distinction between consensual sexual relationships and sexual harassment. These results further support the issues addressed in the literature review indicating that there is a great deal of ambiguity and subjectivity when defining consensual sexual relationships within universities

    Octahedral ruthenium(II) complexes for C-H bond activation and olefin hydroarylation

    The study of inert C-H bond activation of hydrocarbons has been gaining interest. As these hydrocarbons are used in the production of many consumables such as fuel, plastics, and detergents, it is necessary to efficiently utilize the finite quantity of petroleum feedstocks. Transition metal complexes are incorporated as catalysts into synthetic routes to create new C-X (X = C, N, O) bonds in order to increase the chemical value of organic molecules. The complex [Ru(η6-p-cymene){P(OCH2CF3)3}(Ph)(OTf)] (1) (P{OCH2CF3}3 = tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite, Ph = phenyl, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) was prepared and tested for functionality as a catalyst in olefin hydroarylation. Catalytic reactions were attempted with 5 mol % of 1 in ethylene (15 psi) and benzene-d6 at a varying temperatures, which resulted in the decomposition of 1 and no formation of an organic product. With the observed decomposition of the complex in catalytic attempts, three different directions were pursued: the coordination of ligands 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (9N3Me) and 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane (9S3) to complex 1 to replace η6-p-cymene as the ancillary ligand, the synthesis of a Ru(η6-p-cymene) complex that had the caged phosphite ligand trimethylolpropane phosphite {P(OCH2)3CEt} coordinated, and the synthesis of Ru complexes containing the anionic ancillary ligand pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*). The ligands 9S3 and 9N3Me did not coordinate to complex 1. The new complex [Ru(η6-p-cymene){P(OCH2)3CEt}{Ph)(Cl)] (2) was synthesized. The new complex [Ru(Cp*){P(OCH2CF3)3}2(Cl) 3 was synthesized, characterized, and reactivity with AgOTf, AgOAc, PhMgBr, PhLi, and MeLi have been tested (AgOAc = silver acetate)

    Exploring the relationship between socioeconomic status and health, as it affects men and women

    Low socioeconomic status has been found to adversely affect the physical and mental health of men and women. While research studies have examined the relationship between income and health, few have had special focus on gender differences, as they concern physical and mental health outcomes for persons living in poverty. This study explores the disparities and differences that exist between males and females in the population, and seeks to identify any supports needed for those individuals. This study includes a secondary data analysis, which utilized a sample of 125 adults taken from a primary care clinic in Northern Florida that serves individuals of lower socioeconomic status. Physical health measures used in the study included the RAND36 item general health self-report survey and the Body Mass Index scale. The mental health measures used included self-report surveys and questionnaires, such as the five-item Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, and the Inventory of Depressive Symptomology. Results from the analysis indicated that the findings were not statistically significant. Implications and recommendations for future research, policy, and clinical practice are discussed

    Nutrition education intervention in a low-income middle school increases students’ smart beverage choices

    Historically, the intake of fruits and vegetables by children is low, and children in low-income environments are even less likely to consume the recommended fruits and vegetables each day. Fruit and vegetable consumption is linked to obesity which leads to other detrimental diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this intervention was to evaluate the effects of an afterschool nutrition education in a low-income middle school setting. A pre-survey and post-survey were implemented to evaluate how the intervention impacted the participants’ general nutrition knowledge, open-mindedness to taste unfamiliar fruits and vegetables (FVs), and intake of FVs and common beverages. Paired-sample t-tests were used to assess differences between the pre-survey and post-survey data. All analyses were performed using SPSS version 22.0.00, and the priori significance level was set to alpha \u3c0.05. The results indicated a significant increase in the quality of smart beverage choices from baseline (12.40+3.50 score) to the end of the 16-week intervention (13.73+2.28 score), (t=2.256(14), p=0.041). There was a significant decrease in nutrition knowledge from baseline (7.40+1.40 score) to the end of the 16-week intervention (6.47+ 2.17 score), (t=-2.226 (14), p=0.043). No other significant differences were observed
