    NIKU prosjektnummer 1021930. Tidlig i november 2020 foretok an arkeolog ansatt hos Gamle3Hus AS utgraving av to mindre prøvehull i Bredsgården 1A, Bryggen 35. Undersøkelsen av prøvehullene stadfestet til stor grad det eksisterende bildet av situasjonen langs fronten av Bryggen: at avsetning av jordlagene over rivningslaget etter 1702-brannen hovedsakelig har funnet sted i forholdsvis moderne tid. Rivningslaget lå imidlertid på et noe høyere nivå enn man hadde ventet. Det er tre omfar med bolverksstokker etter 1702-brannen.publishedVersio

    Spatial modeling of multi-hazard threat to cultural heritage sites

    Cultural heritage is the foundation upon which global and historical values are based on. It connects us to the legacy left by our ancestors and identifies who we are as part of the modern society. Globally and specifically in the northeastern Romania, the landscape where cultural heritage sites were built on is constantly evolving due to mass wasting processes. Among these processes, landslide and gullies can disrupt the gravitational equilibrium directly or around these sites, threatening their very existence and our capacity to pass them on to future generations. Because landsliding and gullying are stochastic processes, the use of spatial statistics has often been employed to map locations at risk. In this work, we make use of advanced spatial Bayesian statistics to model landslide and gully erosion susceptibilities, separately. And, we ultimately combine these two outputs into a unified multi-hazard susceptibility model which we cross with the known cultural heritage sites in a study area close to the city of Iaşi, in Romania. Specifically, we implement a Bayesian version of a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) which assumes that the two separate landslide and gully presence/absence distributions to behave according to a Bernoulli probability distribution. Contrary to common practices in the literature, the two susceptibility models both feature fixed and random effects, including covariates acting at a latent level. We do this to also capture the unexplained but spatially coherent distribution of properties not directly included in the model. As for the properties directly expressed as covariates, our GAM features terrain attributes obtained from a LIDAR survey, in addition to land use and soil layers. The two single models outstandingly perform (AUC > 0.9) both during the calibration and validation phases. This modeling procedure ensures that the probability of occurrence of the two mass wasting processes under consideration is well estimated and therefore can be used to reliably plan conservation practices for local cultural heritage sites deemed at risk.publishedVersio

    Approaches to the Self – from Modernity back to Viking and Medieval Scandinavia

    In this article the editors of the book account for the book’s main aims, namely to discuss various modes of studying and defining the self and to investigate the various processes and practices that selves in Viking and medieval Scandinavia engaged with. In the book, these two research questions are discussed based on various representations and conceptualizations of the self in textual, historical, art-historical, and archaeological sources from western Scandinavia. Thus, the book aims to contribute to (1) studies of the self in Viking and medieval Scandinavia; (2) studies of the medieval self in general; and (3) theoretical discussions on the interconnections between cognition, materiality of cultural expressions, discourses and practices. This introductory article accounts for the historiographies of these fields and the structure of the book.publishedVersio

    Dette er første statusrapport fra miljøovervåkingsprosjektet for Bryggen. Prosjektet startet høsten 2019 og har i første omgang bestått i å få oversikt over alle overvåkingspunkter, operative overvåkingssystemer og ikke minst I/T systemet (vanninfiltrasjon). Det har vært komplisert å skaffe full oversikt, da alt har ligget stille noen år, og det har vært mange aktører involvert tidligere. Nå samles alle data i Cautus web.This is the initial status report from the Bryggen environmental monitoring project. The project started in fall 2019, and the initial work has consisted in getting an overview of all monitoring points, functioning monitoring systems and not least the water infiltration system. Getting a full overview has been complicated as the whole system has been neglected for a couple of years and many different actors were involved.     Sensing Archaeology in the North: The Use of Non-Destructive Geophysical and Remote Sensing Methods in Archaeology in Scandinavian and North Atlantic Territories

    In August 2018, a group of experts working with terrestrial/marine geophysics and remote sensing methods to explore archaeological sites in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Scotland and Sweden gathered together for the first time at the Workshop ‘Sensing Archaeology in The North’. The goal was to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and consider future directions for further developing these methods and strategies for their use in archaeology. After the event, this special journal issue was arranged to publish papers that are based on the workshop presentations, but also to incorporate work that is produced by other researchers in the field. This paper closes the special issue and further aims to provide current state-of-the-art for the methods represented by the workshop. Here, we introduce the aspects that inspired the organisation of the meeting, a summary of the 12 presentations and eight paper contributions, as well as a discussion about the main outcomes of the workshop roundtables, including the production of two searchable databases (online resources and equipment). We conclude with the position that the ‘North’, together with its unique cultural heritage and thriving research community, is at the forefront of good practice in the application and development of sensing methods in archaeological research and management. However, further method development is required, so we claim the support of funding bodies to back research efforts based on testing/experimental studies to: explore unknown survey environments and identify optimal survey conditions, as well as to monitor the preservation of archaeological remains, especially those that are at risk. It is demonstrated that remote sensing and geophysics not only have an important role in the safeguarding of archaeological sites from development and within prehistorical-historical research, but the methods can be especially useful in recording and monitoring the increased impact of climate change on sites in the North.publishedVersio
