    Spatial modeling of multi-hazard threat to cultural heritage sites

    Cultural heritage is the foundation upon which global and historical values are based on. It connects us to the legacy left by our ancestors and identifies who we are as part of the modern society. Globally and specifically in the northeastern Romania, the landscape where cultural heritage sites were built on is constantly evolving due to mass wasting processes. Among these processes, landslide and gullies can disrupt the gravitational equilibrium directly or around these sites, threatening their very existence and our capacity to pass them on to future generations. Because landsliding and gullying are stochastic processes, the use of spatial statistics has often been employed to map locations at risk. In this work, we make use of advanced spatial Bayesian statistics to model landslide and gully erosion susceptibilities, separately. And, we ultimately combine these two outputs into a unified multi-hazard susceptibility model which we cross with the known cultural heritage sites in a study area close to the city of Iaşi, in Romania. Specifically, we implement a Bayesian version of a Generalized Additive Model (GAM) which assumes that the two separate landslide and gully presence/absence distributions to behave according to a Bernoulli probability distribution. Contrary to common practices in the literature, the two susceptibility models both feature fixed and random effects, including covariates acting at a latent level. We do this to also capture the unexplained but spatially coherent distribution of properties not directly included in the model. As for the properties directly expressed as covariates, our GAM features terrain attributes obtained from a LIDAR survey, in addition to land use and soil layers. The two single models outstandingly perform (AUC > 0.9) both during the calibration and validation phases. This modeling procedure ensures that the probability of occurrence of the two mass wasting processes under consideration is well estimated and therefore can be used to reliably plan conservation practices for local cultural heritage sites deemed at risk.publishedVersionpublishedVersio

    Denne rapporten omhandler tap, tilstand og endring av verneverdige bygninger og SEFRAK-bygninger eldre enn 1900 i 10 utvalgte kommuner i perioden 2000-2019. Analyseresultatene er basert på datainnhenting i felt hvert femte år i Riksantikvarens miljøovervåkingsprogram «Status for verneverdige kulturminner i utvalgte kommuner». Årlig tap av SEFRAK-bygninger har sunket, fra henholdsvis 1 %, 0,9 % og 0,9 % i første, andre og tredje omdrev, til 0,8 % i fjerde omdrev. SEFRAK-bygninger regulert til bevaring har lavere tapsandel enn SEFRAK-bygninger uten tilsvarende vern (1,1 % mot 4,4 %). Tapsandelen er noenlunde den samme i tettbygde og spredtbygde områder, men det er mer forfall på de gjenstående bygningene i spredtbygde områder. Dette gjelder særlig bygninger som opprinnelig var knyttet til primærnæringene. Driftsbygninger, uthus i utmarka, sjøhus og naust er særlig utsatte bygningstyper. Disse bygningstypene har relativt få endringer, men mye forfall. Bolighus, våningshus og bygårder har mange endringer, men lavere tapsandel og lite forfall. Resultatene peker på sammenhengen mellom bruk og bygningsbevaring.This report describes losses, alterations and current condition of preservation worthy heritage and SEFRAK-listed buildings older than 1900 in 10 selected municipalities during the period 2000-2019. The results are based upon control surveys carried out every fifth year in the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage’s environmental follow-up programme «Preservation state of preservation worthy built heritage in selected municipalities». The annual rate of loss has decreased from 1 % in the first period of the control survey, to 0,8 % in the fourth. The buildings with legal protection were better off, with a total loss of 1,1 % over the last five years (annual rate of loss: 0,2 %).publishedVersio

    Nidarneset før Nidaros; Trondheims landskaps- og bosetningshistorie i perioden 500 f.Kr.-1000 e.Kr.

    This article presents and discusses the range of prehistoric archaeological material derived from excavations in the medieval town of Trondheim. The town grew up on Nidarneset, a low-lying peninsula located at the point where the River Nid enters Trondheim Fjord. It became the site of Nidaros kaupang during the 10th century, but recent archaeological finds document the presence of an agrarian settlement since the early Pre-Roman Iron Age at c. 1500 BC. The Iron Age population lived in a natural environment created by combined formation processes throughout the period, including isostatic recovery, alluvial deposition and a landslide which covered part of the peninsula with a thick body of clay. The archaeological material is presented in the context of this dynamic process, demonstrating the close interaction of natural processes and human actors in the formation and use of the landscape. The settlement history is discussed in the wider context of local and regional developments during the Iron Age. The article’s chief aim is to provide for the first time a comprehensive overview of the settlement history of Nidarneset throughout the Iron Age, and to offer some tentative suggestions regarding how this may have contributed to the context in which the urban centre emerged.publishedVersio

    Fire performance of escape route doors in cultural heritage buildings A state-of-the-art review

    The aim of this project was an inventory of the upgrading of old wooden doors for improved fire performance, to identify the key issues and find possibilities for the future. Expected benefit was an update of knowledge, as a preparation for reworking guidelines for improvement of fire resistance of old paneled doors as important parts of historic interiors. Technical solutions for fire rating as well as matrix-based risk assessment approaches for fire performance of timber doors in cultural heritage buildings are presented. A thesis that question the established interpretation of the fire safety regulations by looking into the cost-benefit ratio of upgrading is also presented. Further fire-testing of doors can serve as a basis for a revision of guidelines. Also, the implementation of a more risk-based approach to fire threats in old apartment houses and further investigations of the numbers behind interpretations of regulations - which fire safety measures that give the best effect/cost-benefit ratio – could be useful for the fire safety work in stairwells in the old apartment buildings. The results of the project are highly relevant at a regional and national level.     Setting the Stage, Framing the Picture; the Gilding and Polychromy of Late Medieval Altarpiece Structures in the North

    The gilding and polychromy of the structural parts of altarpieces have largely been overlooked in art historical studies. However, these specific designs were important elements in the framing of the sculptural and painted content of the altarpiece complex. This article provides a detailed art technological overview of the gilding and polychromy of the supporting elements of the whole corpus of Northern German altarpieces in Norway. It highlights the medieval craftsman’s use of sophisticated materials and techniques, and proves that, in addition to being secondary props, the shrine decorations bore important meanings in their own right, containing intrinsic material and aesthetical values. Furthermore, the study found both change and continuity in the specific craftmanship throughout the late medieval period. Changes in the layering and three-dimensional effects have been especially useful tools in the correction of previously assumed dates of origin of several of the altarpieces. Hullet målte ca 1 x 3 m og det ble spadd ut ca. 3 mᵌ masse. Den arkeologiske forundersøkelsen hadde ingen påvisninger av automatisk fredete/intakte kulturlag.publishedVersio
