The students have Saami as their first language. The text writing task, which was in Saami, was conducted by third-class students at a Saami school in a Saami administrative area. There were nine students who participated in the research work. Norwegian is the dominant language among the students in a multilingual environment. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the characteristics and challenges multilingual students have in the development of writing skills. The research starts with the student’s texts. The texts determine what is being researched. The approach of the student texts has been done with a qualitative mapping method. The texts have shown a special need to emphasize vocabulary, the length of the texts and other linguistic awareness issues. The interpretation of the problems in the research is based on bilingualism theories, both linguistic and sociolinguistic approaches. Also other linguistic settings, such as some bilingual teaching models is being explained. The thesis also promotes ideas on what can affect the learning program of the written language and otherwise in language learning. The thesis also includes how to support the student’s language skills. Based on this, it proposes working methods that can help to develop the student’s language skills and linguistic awareness in a multilingual environment, and at the same time support Saami elementary school teachers.publishedVersio

På andres premisser : Taus, usynlig eller i konfrontasjon : En analyse av sørsamisk offentlig samtale

    Get PDF
Nøkkelord: Offentlighet, offentlig samtale, sterk og svak offentlighet, medias rolle, urfolk, minoritet, journalistikk, demokrati, språklig fragmentering.publishedVersio

Summary This master’s thesis in the didactics of Saami language is about oral communication in a second language in distance education. Oral communication is an important way to learn languages, but the pupil in distance education may not have the opportunity to communicate in Saami outside the language lessons. I have researched ways in which a teacher more easily may arrange communicative activities. As the main question of the thesis I have asked how Saami oral language is being activated when the pupil is conversing with the teacher during distance lessons. Central concepts to answer this question are Øzerk (2010) language representations; Manne (1993) information gap, feedback and choice; Vygotsky (Mystkowska-Wiertelak 2017) guidance; and Hole (2003) modeling. To be able to answer the main question I have asked the following supplementary question: How may the second language pupil’s language use be described? The research has been done as a case study, where I have filmed distance learning lessons in which I myself have participated as the teacher. I have analyzed the research material by descriptive statistics and discourse analysis, and so the Saami conversation goahti has appeared. The Saami conversation goahti is a didactic model helping the teacher to succeed when arranging communicative learning activities. In this way the Saami speaking may increase during the lesson.publishedVersio

Negative discourse in social medias : An analysis of hate speech in the Saami context

    Get PDF
There has been a growth of hate speech on social media in general, and this issue requires further research. This paper aims to deconstruct some of the hate speech mechanisms on social media in the context of Norway and the Saami people. There is insufficient research about negative discourse and dehumanizing attitudes in the online media sphere, this paper aim`s to fill some of that gap. Using social science, socio-historical perspectives and critical discourse analysis, this paper seeks to reveal some possible causes for anti-Saami discourse. With this thesis I aim to identify some of the aspects of racial prejudice and negative discourse that is occurring in the social media. I wish to give some insight into how historical events and national ideology can be the trigger for the majority population regarding Saami autonomy and self-determination.publishedVersio

The Art of Survivance : Sacred Land, Storytelling & Resistance in Louisiana

    No full text
Grounded in Indigenous research methodologies, this thesis explores the ways in which storytelling and resistance interrelate in Louisiana. Through delving into the historicity and cultural continuity of storytelling, as well as interviews with seven influential storytellers, four themes were uncovered; storytelling, sacred land, resistance and counter-narratives. The historical and cultural contexts of multiple ethnic identities in Louisiana is discussed, however this research is primarily informed by Black and Native storytelling. The findings demonstrate the relevance of protecting sacred lands, such as the Bayous and Congo Square, as they nurture oral tradition and histories of resistance in Louisiana. Further, the data analysis illustrates that storytelling and resistance coexist through the reclamation of silenced histories and cultural traditions cultivated by these sacred lands.Vuođuštuvvon álgoálbmotmetodologiijain, dát masterbargu guorahallá man láhkái muitaleapmi ja vuostálastin doibmet giehtalága Louisianas, USA:s.
