Assessment and future projections of storm surge using CMIP6 models in the Indo-Pacific region

    No full text
Storm surges are critical events for densely populated coastal areas and offshore islands, with the occurrence of coastal flooding expected to increase due to sea-level rise and intensified storm activity under climate change. This study evaluates projected changes in both seasonal mean and extreme storm surges across the Indo-Pacific region using high-resolution Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate models under the SSP5–8.5 high-emission scenario. This study assesses the seasonal storm surge simulation skill of five CMIP6 models, benchmarked against ERA5 reanalysis data for the period 1979–2010. The model performance is quantified with the comprehensive rating index (CRI) confirming that the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) for the climate projections has the best overall performance. The Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution, applied using the block maxima method, is used to estimate 100-year return values (RV100) for both the historical (1971–2000) and near-term (2021–2050) periods during the JJA (June–August) and SON (September–November) seasons. The RV100 analysis reveals heightened surge potential in the North Pacific, South China Sea, and the southern coasts of Australia and New Zealand, with a notable shift in surge intensity from the South China Sea to the North Pacific, particularly intensifying during SON. Projections indicate strong seasonal surge intensities, with the Yellow Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria, and the southern coasts of Australia and New Zealand regions showing pronounced increases in JJA, while positive changes in SON are evident in the North Pacific, North Indian Ocean (NIO), the Indonesian coast, and Gulf of Thailand, suggesting the potential for increased impact from extreme surges in these areas

Consumer transition: analyzing the impact of environmental and health consciousness on green food choices in Vietnam

    Get PDF
On the background of a growing global emphasis on sustainable consumption and the need to understand how environmental and health consciousness influence green food preferences, this research investigates the psychological factors influencing Vietnamese consumers' transition to green food choices. Building on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we extend the model by incorporating environmental and health consciousness two additional constructs to understand their impacts on green food purchase intention and behavior. Data was collected from 569 consumers in Hanoi in face-to-face interviews, and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used for analysis. Key findings reveal that green food purchase intention is a strong predictor of actual purchase behavior. Perceived behavioral control and social influence significantly affect purchase intention, while positive attitudes towards green food also play a crucial role. Besides, environmental concern has a significant impact on attitudes and green food purchase intention, because it plays an essential role in promoting sustainable consumption. In addition, health consciousness directly affects the purchase intention of green food but does not change overall attitude, indicating that health-related motives are distinct drivers of green food purchases in the Vietnam market. Our study is a unique contribution to the literature by the integration of environmental and health consciousness into the TPB framework and its application in a developing country context. The findings offer practical implications for policymakers and businesses aiming to encourage sustainable consumption patterns in Vietnam

    No full text
The paper attempts to find diversification opportunities with Nordic countries with high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) scores and world and emerging indices. The study also identifies the resilient diversification opportunities in these countries during the pandemic. The study utilises daily adjusted closing prices of the selected indices from March 11, 2018, to March 11, 2021, divided into pre-COVID and post-COVID windows. The time-varying connectedness-wavelet coherence model and network analysis capture the time-varying volatilities and analyse the interconnectedness between the indices. The results found that MSCI Emerging markets diversification opportunities are least impacted by the outbreak of the pandemic and thus, show more resilient diversification in comparison with MSCI World Index. It has been found that Iceland and Switzerland are the two indices that provide diversification with benchmark indices and captured diversification. Finally, Switzerland is providing resilient diversification opportunities with both benchmark indexes

Assessing the Efficacy of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) Principle amidst the Misuse of Veto Power: a critical analysis

    No full text
This article analyzes whether the development of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle can serve to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing, given the abuse of veto power by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Although several proposals have been made to restrain the use of the veto, the absence of an intent to eliminate it in its entirety has obstructed UN institutions in their efforts to build an inclusive and peaceful society. In this context, the authors discuss the debate on the utility of R2P as a norm; its historical background; the relevance of the Responsibility Not to Veto (RN2V) through the example of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict; and the role of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and other UN organs in aiding the UNSC to implement R2P and maintain international peace and security. The article focuses on preventing mass atrocities through R2P to safeguard vulnerable populations’ access to basic rights and economic opportunities. Further, RN2V, by limiting UNSC paralysis during a crisis, would help avert protracted conflicts that exacerbate poverty, displacement, and environmental degradation. The R2P and RN2V principles collectively have the potential to strengthen UN institutions and reinforce the emphasis on equity, resilience, and peace by ensuring that violence, conflicts, and political inaction do not undo developmental gains

Supply Chain Entrainment and Organizational Performance: a study in context of manufacturing sector

    No full text
The manufacturing industry is growing more complex and dynamic, demanding a deeper insight into the factors that promote synchronization and boost productivity. In this context, the emerging concept of Supply Chain Entrainment (SCE), which promotes the synchronisation and alignment of processes, activities, and flow across the supply chain, can lead to sustainable growth. This study investigates the impact of SCE on Organizational Performance (OP) within manufacturing organizations. Specifically, it examines how synchronizing measures between supply chain partners influence performance outcomes. This study employs partial least squares structural equation modeling to analyse the effects of SCE facilitators on supplier collaboration, information exchange, and process integration. Additionally, the moderating role of technology adoption on the SCE-OP interrelationship has been studied, acknowledging its crucial influence in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape. The results support a positive effect of supplier collaboration, information sharing, and process integration on SCE and underscore that these are essential factors in accomplishing a harmonized and efficient supply chain. Furthermore, the study provides a direct and meaningful relationship between SCE and OP. This highlights the strategic importance of a supply chain that has been well-entrained in the overall success of the organization. This focus on technology adoption enhances the study's relevance and offers valuable insights for managers operating in the current business environment. The findings from the study contribute valuable knowledge to academicians and industry practitioners, deepening our understanding of manufacturing supply chain dynamics and effective management strategies

Punjab : relocations of Hindutva in a Sikh majority state

In this article, we assess the current standing, strategies and potential future trajectory of Hindutva in Punjab, the only Sikh majority state in India. Sikhs constitute 55% of the population in Punjab but only 1.7% of the population in India as a whole. As we show later, this complex majority-minority situation has been decisive in shaping the nature of Punjab's/Sikhs' relationship with the central government in Delhi and the Indian nation as a whole, as well as with other religious communities and movements and, not least, with the dominant form of communal and ethno-nationalist Hindutva. Through an analysis of some of the current dynamics of this majority-minority situation, we argue that the future of Hindutva and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab seems to be a complicated and insecure one; importantly, it is also one that is likely to be grounded in further political polarization and radicalization, as well as in Hindu nationalist mobilization around the projection of an imagined ‘Khalistan threat’ within and outside the Punjab. Our argument is that both for historical reasons and due to the strong anti-Hindutva sentiments that consolidated during the Indian farmers' protest from 2020 onwards, Punjab remains a particularly challenging terrain for Hindutva. The BJP's recent rise in the state can be explained by multiple factors, including growing disaffection with the two other parties attracting urban Hindu votes, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Aam Admi Party (AAP). However, we contend that playing up the ‘Khalistan threat’ remains a privileged tool in the hands of the Sangh Parivar because it offers a symbolic resource that can be mobilized regionally, nationally, and internationally. In Punjab, this discursive strategy serves to delegitimize Sikh dissent and reinforce Hindu majoritarian narratives. Below, we first briefly review the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. We then introduce the socio-political context of the state before we discuss Hindu nationalist constructions of Sikhs and Sikhism. By unpacking the majority-minority relationship further, we then analyze current Hindu nationalist strategies for consolidation, stressing particularly the intimate intertwinement of this kind of politics with new forms of neo-Panthic politics and Sikh nationalism.Footnote1 In the conclusion, we take stock of where new oppositional forces capable of mounting a pushback against Hindutva may emerge from
