Association Between Child Marriage and Intimate Partner Violence : a Kenyan national analysis

    No full text
Child marriage and intimate partner violence (IPV) are global health crises that violate individual human rights. Prior research has linked child marriage to IPV in lower-and-middle-income countries; however, information regarding this relationship in Kenya is sparse. The present study aims to (a) estimate the prevalence of child marriage and various forms of IPV (emotional, physical, and sexual) and (b) examine the association between child marriage and IPV among Kenyan women. This study utilized the most recent 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), a large scale and nationally representative dataset. A total of 12,888 participants (Mage = 32.35 years; SD = 7.96) were included in the final analysis. The prevalence rates of child marriage and experiencing at least one form of IPV, emotional, physical, and sexual IPV, were found to be 31.23%, 44.8%, 34.5%, 32.6%, and 10.1%, respectively. Multinomial regression models revealed that the likelihood of experiencing at least one form of IPV was 25% higher (OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.16–1.36, p < .01), emotional IPV was 19% higher (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.09–1.29, p < .01), and physical IPV was 31% higher (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.21–1.43, p < .01) among Kenyan women who married before the age of 18 years. Findings highlight the need for effective policy enforcement and implementation to prevent child marriage and safeguard women from IPV within child marriages

Russia–India–China Meet Power Projection and Multipolarity

    No full text
The meeting between President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and President Vladimir Putin, among others, on 31 August–1 September, in Tianjin, is a historic projection of Eurasian power and a “pivot to Asia” from within the region. The meeting of these three leaders confirms a process of redistribution of power on the international stage, a rebalancing that eminently favours the three and opens possibilities for the global South. The meeting is a part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), of which China is the current chair. China has worked relentlessly to make this meeting a success, especially because it is followed by a commemorative Chinese parade (3 September) to mark 80 years since World War II, the Japanese surrender and the end of the Anti-fascist War in September 1945. The world is unlikely to miss the symbolism of both these events

Sustainable and resilient circular supply chain : a remanufacturer selection

    No full text
Purpose : To establish a systematic framework for supply chain managers to identify and assess potential remanufacturers of “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)” by setting sustainability and resilience goals. Design/methodology/approach: Thisstudy utilised a three phase approach: conducting a systematic literature review, gathering expert insights via a survey, establishing a hierarchy by breaking down revealed factors into criteria and sub-criteria and applying the “Modified-Analytic Hierarchy Process (M-AHP)”. Findings: A systematic literature review identified 46 factors, which were expanded by expert insights, contributing seven new factors. The subsequentstep involved creating a hierarchy of factors categorised into 53 sub-criteria, organised under seven main criteria: Sustainable Practices Alignment (SPA), Sustainability Resource Management (SRM), Environmental Financial Evaluation (EFE), Socially Responsible Advantages (SRA), Environmental Core Strengths (ECS), Sustainable Service Delivery (SSD) and REsilience Capabilities (REC). Finally, applying the M-AHP revealed four essential criteria – SRM, EFE, SRA and REC – that are pivotal for selecting WEEE remanufacturers within the context of the Supply Chain Management (SCM) domain. Research limitations/implications: Thisstudy presents a structured framework for selecting remanufacturers in WEEE supply chains. It offers direct insights for manufacturers on partner selection and provides indirect guidance for remanufacturers to enhance their capabilities. The M-AHP approach supports strategic decisionmaking, fostering sustainability, regulatory compliance and resilience in circular supply chain management. Originality/value: This study demonstrates three significant contributions. It proposes a new framework for the selection of WEEE remanufacturers. Next, it shows the appropriateness of M AHP for research in supply chain management. Thirdly, clustering 53 sub-criteria into seven primary criteria enhances the accuracy of the selection process

Stewards of the Sea : empowering India’s traditional fisherfolk to safeguard coastal ecosystems

    No full text
Provincial and federal governments in India classify traditional fisher-folk as backward even if no formal laws explicitly protect their rights. In this article, we elaborate on how as guardians of these coasts, traditional fisherfolk evolved stringent social and cultural norms to protect the health of critical ecosystems. We examine recent ‘developments’ in the Indian context and their impact on coastal ecosystems and traditional fishing communities – issues that reflect broader global trends. We then outline relevant Indian legislation that were designed to protect marine ecosystems and benefit traditional fisherfolk while highlighting their shortcomings. Additionally, we touch upon nationally important case laws pertinent to these issues. We also delve into relevant guidelines that hold promise. We explore a paradigm where traditional fishers have integrated technology with traditional governance practices to successfully nurture coastal ecosystems. We conclude by advocating for secure tenure rights and by identifying opportunities for traditional and small-scale fisherfolk to strengthen their livelihoods sustainably

Exploring latent factors of juvenile delinquency : a cross-sectional inquiry from India

    No full text
Purpose This study aims to identify and analyze the cumulative psychosocial and environmental factors contributing to juvenile delinquency in India. While existing literature has explored these factors, much of it remains descriptive and lacks analytical depth. This study addresses that gap using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to uncover underlying patterns. Design/methodology/approach A descriptive cross-sectional design was used in government observation homes across Tamil Nadu, India. Data were collected from 178 juvenile delinquents using a semi-structured interview schedule. PCA with varimax rotation was applied to identify latent dimensions influencing delinquent behavior. Findings The PCA revealed five key underlying factors contributing to juvenile delinquency: Dissatisfaction and Emotional Rebellion, Criminal Propensity and Peer Influence, Imitation and Family Disruption, Media Influence and Material Aspiration and Educational Disengagement and Migration. These factors reflect the complex psychosocial and environmental contexts shaping youth behavior. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to a specific region (Tamil Nadu) and includes only institutionalized male juveniles, as the number of female juveniles was too small for meaningful analysis. Additionally, the cross-sectional design restricts the ability to infer causality, particularly regarding the progression from minor offenses to more serious crimes. Practical implications The findings provide a framework for developing early intervention programs tailored to the specific needs of delinquent youth. Policymakers, educators and juvenile justice professionals can use this evidence to inform more targeted prevention strategies. Originality/value This study is among the few in India to apply PCA in juvenile delinquency research, offering a statistically grounded, multidimensional understanding of the factors involved

The Ideation of Qualitative Methodologies in Business Management and Education

    No full text
Qualitative research is fundamentally about understanding the “why” behind consumer actions. Unlike quantitative methods that focus on numerical data and statistical analysis, qualitative research delves into the subjective experiences, beliefs, and motivations of individuals. As noted by Philomath Research (2024), qualitative research is essential for businesses as it provides deep insights into consumer behavior, preferences, and motivations. This understanding is critical in today's dynamic marketplace where consumer expectations are constantly shifting. The power of qualitative research lies in its ability to uncover hidden patterns and explore market dynamics that quantitative data may overlook. For instance, through techniques such as ethnographic studies and in-depth interviews, researchers can gain a comprehensive understanding of consumer needs and desires. This approach not only informs product development but also enhances customer satisfaction by aligning offerings with actual consumer preference

Appraisal of Arbuscular Mycorrhiza in Fruit Production and Mitigation Against Stress: Current Insights and Prospects

    Get PDF
Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have emerged as a key biological fertilizer in sustainable fruit farming that promotes nutrient uptake, improving edaphic conditions, and increasing crop resilience to eco-physiological stressors. Through symbiotic relations with the higher plant roots, AM fungi facilitate the uptake of essential minerals and nutrients, leading to improved plant health, increased yields, and reduced reliance on synthetic fertilizers. These attributes contribute to environmentally sustainable fruit production. This review explores the current applications, achievements, and limitations of AM fungi in fruit production, with a focus on commercially available inoculants and specific case studies demonstrating their efficacy. However, factors such as variability in the colonization efficiency, soil– specific interactions, and logistics challenges in larger scale applications hinder their widespread adoption. Moreover, the compatibility with conventional crop varieties and the dynamic interaction within the soil microbiomes present additional challenges. The future perspective aims to enhance AM efficiency through breeding, genetic engineering, and elucidation of molecular signaling pathways to optimize plant-fungal interactions. The Integration of precision agriculture, advanced bioformulations, and biotechnological advancements is expected to improve AM fungi adaptability across diverse climatic conditions and cropping systems, thereby promoting their broader implementation in commercial fruit production
