    Unleashing prevention and reaching the masses with a positive mental wellness museum

    2019-05-21Mental illness-focused programs fail to prevent the most prevalent problems, perpetuating wicked social issues that maintain mental health as the single most costly problem in the world. Health and well-being require positive mental wellness (PMW), but only 20 percent of Americans are “flourishing” with high PMW. Anyone below flourishing has a four times increased risk of developing mental illness. The Grand Challenges for Social Work call for increased prevention and settings-based programs that address the social and environmental contexts required for well-being. Flourish Interactive Museum of Positive Mental Wellness is a proposed innovation designed to answer those needs by helping the public learn to flourish, increasing PMW, and preventing common problems like anxiety, depression, risky behaviors, violence, crisis, and suicide. The proposed innovation incorporates best practices from nutrition and wellness architecture, while also introducing a new therapeutic shop and cafe brand called Theralicious®. The innovation lies in the public service delivery model, the novel museum setting, the multi-disciplinary strategy, a mental health brand with consumer appeal, and co-located holistic wellness experiences. Flourish Interactive aims to: 1) Engage people in pursuing PMW as a normal, desirable daily priority; 2) Bypass stigma and other barriers to participation; and, 3) Reach the masses through appealing public interventions. Should the pilot exhibits deliver successful outcomes, the concept could be replicated in other communities with high mental illness prevalence, provider shortages, low access to care, and other barriers to wellness

    Family Matters Resource Center of model practices supporting children of incarcerated parents

    2019-05-17There has been extensive examination of mass incarceration in the U.S. and some researchers have outlined innovative solutions toward Promoting Smart Decarceration. Yet, little of this discussion focuses on the 2.2 million children in the U.S. with a parent in prison or jail. Despite the large number of children affected, there is no major system of care designed specifically to support them. Because there is no formal mandate for criminal justice or youth service systems to identify and consider these children needs, there are no formal professional organizations that disseminate model practices or that provide training and technical support. The proposed innovation, Family Matters Resource Center (FMRC), will be the first international focused children of incarcerated parents resource center that includes three core elements: 1) online compendium of model practices, 2) online depository of tools and resources and, 3) virtual and in-person training and technical assistance. FMRC is an innovative intervention that aims to disrupt social norms connected to stigma held against incarcerated parents by educating systems leaders to examine their policies through the lens of protecting children’s needs versus punishing their parents. Model practices are presented for leaders in all of the major systems affecting children with incarcerated parents including criminal justice, child welfare, schools, health and behavioral healthcare. FMRC will impact the lives of children affected worldwide by parental incarceration and fill a critical gap in the broader smart decarceration movement

    Energy performance of different building forms: HEED simulations of equivalent massing models in diverse building surface aspect ratios and locations in the US

    2019-07-23The façade is a line between indoor and outdoor, which makes it one of the most significant topics in building science. It has been chosen to test the energy-efficient of the most basic common architectural building forms, tall thin, medium-medium (cube) and short wide building forms, that are using precast concrete façades with standard thermal comfort. This may help develop the precast concrete envelope market in the U.S. and make people more confident in precast concrete envelopes starting from the governments and architectural firms because usually wood, steel, stone and glass are used as a building envelope in America, but precast concrete envelopes are used more than any façade material in the Middle East. ❧ Three different residential building forms have been tested. The tall thin model dimensions are 9.75m × 9.75m × 29.26m (32ft × 32ft × 96ft), ten stories, and the medium-medium model has 14.63m × 14.63m × 14.63m (48ft × 48ft × 48ft), five stories. The short wide model is 30.48m × 30.48m × 2.93m (100ft x 100ft) × 9.6ft, one story. They have been designed by using the same US energy building codes and standards. Also, they have been used almost the same equal total floor area, ∼1000m² (10,764 square feet), massing volume, ∼3000m³ (105,944 cubic feet) plan aspect ratio, 1:1, and Window to Wall Ratio (WWR), 25%, at three diverse climate locations in the US, Los Angeles, New York, and Las Vegas, with an additional three variables, which are building orientation, ±0°, -30° and -45°, infiltration system, 2.0, 1.5 and 0.3 SLA/ 4.0, 3.0 and 0.6 ACH, and controlled blinds in three modes, fixed, automated with sun rays and automated with temperature, to find which precast concrete model saves the energy more by using a Building Energy Modeling (BEM) software tool, Home Energy Efficient Design (HEED). ❧ The results show in general the short wide model is the most energy efficient massing in all different conditions, which makes it first. Secondly, the cube-shaped model follows closely, which is 6% higher energy consumption than the short wide mass. Lastly, the tall thin building form with the precast concrete façade performs much worse. The energy consumption of the tall thin precast concrete façade in all conditions is 46% more than the short wide mass and 40% more than the cube mass. Usually, this ordinal is valid even though all the specifications and approximately the total floor area, massing volume, plan aspect ratio and WWR are the same, but the percentages may change a little bit, depends on the additional variables

    Women and leadership: an analysis of collegiate athletics and contributions to leadership

    2019-07-23Research in the field of leadership is vast; from studies that seek to understand what traits good leaders possess to understanding how leadership is developed. Leadership development research has also sought to understand how to train leaders with many researchers turning to Bandura’s work on self-efficacy and one’s beliefs in his or her abilities. In these studies, leadership identity was mediated by one’s beliefs in their abilities to enact leadership. Though McCormick and McCormick et al.’s studies on leadership focused specifically on a leadership self-efficacy, general self-efficacy can also be seen as a key component when examining gender and leadership. Studies related to general self-efficacy (GSE) found that higher GSE was associated with optimism, self-regulation, self-esteem, as well as motivational variables such as openness, goal setting and orientation, need for achievement, and effort. ❧ Recent work surrounding gender and leadership often found that women were discriminated in hiring practices (glass ceiling), were offered precarious positions of leadership (the glass cliff), or just have a double standard of leadership placed on them (the double bind). These studies do not however include female motivations, identity, and perceptions of women who have attained top leadership positions creating an incomplete portrait of women in leadership. Sartore and Cunningham (2007) proposed a model of leadership through women’s internalization of social roles and projection onto their identity. The current study asks the questions: How did the collegiate athletic experience influence former female student-athletes (FFAs) leadership development? and How do FFAs feel their interactions with coaches and teammates influenced their leadership identity development? Through qualitative interviewing this research attempted to capture the perceptions of former female student-athletes who have been successful in gaining some of the highest leadership positions in their respective professional careers. These opinions are important in understanding what these women attribute to their success in rising to the upper echelons and how they have been successful in building their leadership identities while overcoming the aforementioned theories of gender discrimination in leadership. All ten interviewed leaders, though they may not have attributed much to their collegiate athletic careers at the start of the interviews, credited many foundational attributes of their leadership and leadership identity to their time in collegiate sports

    Targeting sexism with cognitive dissonance

    2019-07-28Although existing interventions have had some success with sexism reduction (e.g., Becker & Swim, 2011; Kilmartin Semelsberger, Dye, Boggs, & Kolar, 2015), the use of cognitive dissonance as a strategy for decreasing sexist attitudes and behavior has been only minimally explored. This project involved three experiments that employed cognitive dissonance principles (Festinger, 1957) in novel interventions to reduce sexism in young people. All three studies employed diverse outcome assessments (i.e., self-report, implicit association tests, novel behavioral outcomes). Study 1 (N=123 males) tested a counterattitudinal sexism intervention (e.g., Cohen, 1962) in several different virtual reality settings, compared to a control condition. Study 2 (N=177 males) compared a hypocrisy induction intervention (e.g., Stone, Aronson, Crain, Winslow, & Fried, 2008) to an existing social norms intervention (Kilmartin et al., 2008) and an inert control condition. Studies 1 and 2 produced mostly null results; hypotheses for intervention inefficacy are discussed. Study 3 (N=188 females) evaluated a hypocrisy induction approach, compared to a control condition, in reducing sexist beliefs and increasing assertiveness. The hypocrisy induction showed some efficacy for reducing self-report sexism and increasing conversational assertiveness in female participants. Overall conclusions are drawn about the promise of dissonance-based interventions targeting sexism, along with recommendations for future research

    Strategic support for philanthropic fundraising: a needs analysis of development officers in higher education

    2019-07-25With decreased funding, rising costs, and increased competition, institutions of higher education face a heightened need to raise funds from private philanthropic sources to sustain their programs and services. Development officers have become vital to shoring up financial gaps. Educational fundraising generally involves cultivating positive relationships with charitable donors over time. It is important for organizations to support and retain development officers to be efficient and effective in philanthropic fundraising. This study explored the needs of development officers at the Brandiam School, a pseudonym. Their highest priority was to fundraise for scholarships to support the recruitment and retention of a diverse and talented student body. The Clark and Estes (2008) gap analysis framework was adopted for a needs analysis of the knowledge and skills, motivation, and organizational resources necessary for development officers to achieve their fundraising goal. The findings from this study revealed an asset of self-efficacy and remaining needs of development officers’ procedural knowledge of the fundraising solicitation cycle, metacognitive knowledge about evaluating and improving their fundraising skills, value orientation about individual goals, and organizational influences that were specific to the context. The New World Kirkpatrick Model (Kirkpatrick & Kirkpatrick, 2016) was used to design an integrated implementation and evaluation plan with recommendations for practice. The recommended two-part learning program was designed around the end goal of optimizing development officers’ performance in philanthropic fundraising and, ultimately, for the organization to enhance capacity and retention of high performing development officers to maximize their positive impact through education

    Nursing comfort study: are hospitals performing for nurses? IEQ analysis of working conditions inside hospitals

    2019-07-25Hospitals are the place where people go to get over an ailment with the expectation of receiving proper treatment with a quick recovery time. Among all of the staff at the hospital, Nurses are one of the fundamental workers towards patient recovery. Nurses are involved in all stages of a patient’s care, from signing the patient in to walking them out the door. Nurses are the front line of defense for a hospital, ensuring that patients receive proper treatment. Nurses are essential to patient recovery. Therefore, their comfort should be a major concern as it directly linked to their productivity. A hospital should respond to their nursing staff’s comfort needs to produce higher results from its nurses. By minimizing nurse discomfort a hospital can expect a nurse to have higher productivity values. Nurses are essential to patient recovery. Nurses should not be an afterthought when it comes to setting up the buildings comfort control systems. It is of the utmost importance that nurses be given respect inside their space in terms of comfort. Using IEQ driven data, occupant surveying, and observational information allows us to understand how a Nurse is considered in their space. The goal of this research is to determine the impacts of IEQ on hospitals nursing staff. In doing so determine the IEQ satisfaction and workplace productivity of the users. ❧ The study adopted several data collections methods to produce relevant data. The first data set came from installing and monitoring sensors around the common work areas of the nursing staff to collect the IEQ of the space. The second data set came from the nurse comfort surveys. Lastly the third data set came from architectural observation. Data collection occurred over several days to ensure that anomalies were minimized in any of the data sets. Each data set provides additional layers of information about what is occurring inside of the hospital. The direct monitoring of the IEQ of the space told us the present conditions of the workstations, once compared to the occupant survey a more complete picture can be made and the problems start to become clear. After that the architectural observation is used to see what features appear to cause the most discomfort among the staff. Analyzing and comparing the data sets, makes it possible to evaluate how comfortable nurses are in their environment. The third step was to produce design guide recommendations based on the analysis results. In conclusion nurse’s complaints were in alignment with one another and overall, it was found that IEQ factors were insufficient to some degree and impacted them negatively. Future research should use a larger data set generated from several hospitals. To proof the work done in this thesis is able to be used in other hospitals

    Exploring the contributions of teacher authenticity in two high school band programs in Greater Los Angeles

    2019-07-24An authentic individual demonstrates their values and beliefs through their actions in a way that is apparent to others. Authenticity is often seen in others this way though also in individuals in specific roles, such as teachers. Teacher authenticity has been shown to positively impact student learning, and is believed to positively impact interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this multiple case study is to interrogate the concept of authenticity in practice for two selected high school band directors and its impact on their relationships with high school band students. The main questions posed were: (1) how does teacher authenticity manifest in practice and (2) contribute to teacher-student relationships. Observation, interview, student focus group, student questionnaire, and field note data were collected over the course of four weeks and then transcribed for analysis. Findings revealed that authenticity was demonstrated through actions to have one be known and heard, specific teacher-student interactions, effective pedagogical choices, and “teacher-in-the-trenches” moments. Different qualities of teacher-student relationships appeared at the two schools where authenticity was present, however, a context was created overall for working teacher-student relationships in both cases

    Flowstone ideograms: deciphering the climate messages of Asian speleothems

    2019-07-23Speleothems have been widely used to reconstruct past hydroclimate variability, particularly in the Asian Monsoon region. While Asian speleothem δ¹⁸O is traditionally interpreted as “monsoon intensity”, recent work has proposed alternative interpretations such as water vapor transport and changes in atmospheric circulation that challenge or redefine this long-held concept. Also, challenges exist when we attempt to get interpretations of speleothem δ¹⁸O by correlating them with climate variables. This thesis aims to better understand the climate signals preserved in Asian speleothems over various timescales ranging from orbital to interannual. The thesis begins with the discussion of the challenges in interpreting speleothem δ¹⁸O based on correlation analysis and the methods to circumvent these statistical issues are provided. Then a state-of-the-art isotope-enabled climate model iCESM is employed to investigate the interpretation of Asian speleothem δ¹⁸O. The model is capable of credibly simulating precipitation δ¹⁸O and particularly the impact of the convective activity on precipitation δ¹⁸O. Then this model is used to quantify contributions to precipitation δ¹⁸O over China at both orbital and interannual time scales. Results suggest that orbital-scale speleothem δ¹⁸O variations at Chinese sites mainly represent the meridional migration of the Asian monsoon circulation, accompanied by an early northward movement of the East Asian rain belt. At interannual scales, Chinese speleothem δ¹⁸O is also tied to the intensity of monsoonal circulation, via a change in moisture source locations: enhanced moisture delivery from remote source regions leads to depleted δ¹⁸O. The results offer a re-interpretation of the concept of “monsoon intensity” as “enhanced monsoonal circulation” rather than precipitation amount. Despite this complexity, speleothem δ¹⁸O at orbital scales is coherent across Asia. However, whether the coherency still exists at short time scales is a question. Here we synthesize Asian speleothem δ¹⁸O over the Holocene to investigate whether they show coherent variability at sub-orbital scales, and particularly focus on the “4.2 ka event” and the newly announced Meghalayan age (4.2 ka BP to present). We find no coherent variability among Asian speleothem δ¹⁸O at these time scales. This asynchrony can be explained by heterogenous soil, vegetation, and karst processes modifying coherent climate inputs. Given the relatively small amplitude (1-3 ‰) of speleothems at sub-orbital scales, extracting hydroclimate variability at these time scales from speleothem δ¹⁸O should be done with caution, and supplemented by proxies such as δ¹⁸C and trace elements ratios
