Analyzing the factors affecting online student participation among Grade 12 Senior High School Students of the Univeristy of the Philippines Rural High School
This research paper identifies the significant relationships between the frequency of student participation and the various factors affecting such during online classes amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, community quarantine had to be mandated all over the country which consecutively pushed the education system to shift from a face-to-face setup to online. Semi-structured surveys were distributed to Grade 12 Senior High School students at the University of the Philippines Rural High School to gather perspectives on their rate of participation and its most influential factors. The data was analyzed using Chi-square Test of Independence and thematic analysis. The results revealed that student participation was frequently exhibited in the forms of preparation before classes, attendance, and interaction with peers, while less common acts of participation included contribution to the discussion and communication skills. Twelve significant relationships between the frequency of participation and affecting factors emerged—most being related to the impact of the instructor (in terms of attitude towards students and quality of content delivery) and student traits, specifically self-confidence. Though students’ interest in the subject and preparation before class did not appear to have any significant relationship with the frequency of participation, these factors are worth noting since they were frequently claimed by students to affect their participation. The rest of the significant relationships fell under the logistical and environmental factors, highlighting issues on poor internet connectivity and mode of learning. Though participation, specifically attendance, was still evidently affected by students’ external circumstances caused by the pandemic, the frequency of participation depended more on internal happenings within the student and in the class led and delivered by the teacher. Hence, this study presents insight and recommendations on modifying these related factors to optimize online student participation to the fullest, and furthermore shed light on students’ views of online student participation
Remote learning vs. limited face-to-face classess: a case study on the educational situation in the Bachelor of Science in Biology course of the University of the Philippies Los Baños and its impacts on the students during the Covid-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 health crisis threatens not only the country\u27s economic, psychosocial, and socio-political sectors but also, to a substantial extent, the educational landscape. Lockdowns and safety precautions were instituted by the government so as to control the spread of the virus in the early part of 2020. Institutions and universities in higher education have been compelled to switch from face-to-face teaching-learning interactions to the current setup of remote learning, resulting in the reorganization of learning environments. In order to investigate information regarding the educational situation among BS Biology students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna during the conduct of remote learning and limited face-to-face classes through a case study, a survey questionnaire and a synchronous Zoom meeting were conducted among five (5) students through purposive and convenience sampling. Qualitative thematic and content analysis were then performed for data analysis. There were significant differences between the educational situation of the students during remote learning and limited face-to-face classes in terms of learning resources, workload given, and their satisfaction and attitudes towards the pandemic. The lack of experience in the laboratory during the online learning turns out to be one of the biggest challenges they have as BS Biology students, so a full face-to-face setup can bring a quality education to BS Biology students considering the essentiality of laboratory skills for them. Overall, the pandemic did have an impact on the students’ routines and learning habits. Two of the participants became delayed, two became less motivated, and one became more eager to learn
A study on the level of satisfaction of commuters in the Laguna province using the public transportation before and during the pandemic
Public transportation plays a vital role in providing commuters with access to resources and opportunities while promoting environmental sustainability and economic growth. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted various aspects of our lives, including the functioning of public transportation systems. This research paper aims to investigate the specific impact of the pandemic on commuter satisfaction in Laguna Province, Philippines. Using a quantitative, descriptive design, the study identifies and examines five key factors that influence satisfaction: safety, price, comfortability, availability, and efficiency. A total of 76 respondents participated in the research, and data analysis was conducted using the paired samples t-test method. The findings highlight a notable decrease in overall satisfaction levels among commuters during the pandemic, except safety. Factors such as price, comfortability, availability, and efficiency significantly affected the level of satisfaction reported. To improve overall satisfaction amidst pandemic-related challenges, it is imperative to implement necessary improvements in public transportation systems. Prioritizing the evolving needs of commuters and enhancing service quality are vital considerations. The study underscores the significance of factors beyond safety, including price and comfort, in shaping the satisfaction of commuters. By addressing these aspects, it will be possible to establish a more sustainable and commuter-centric transportation system. The findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and transportation authorities, enabling them to prioritize and implement necessary improvements. In future research endeavors, the researchers recommend expanding the sample size, incorporating qualitative aspects, and collaborating with relevant authorities to gather comprehensive data and formulate actionable recommendations for enhancing public transportation services
A case study research on the impacts of Covid-19 protocols on the experiences of Lazada delivery drivers in Laguna
The delivery industry, specifically the online shopping space, has grown significantly in recent years, mostly due to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, several factors, including social norms, laws, and situations relating to health and safety, have impacted their effectiveness. Similarly, delivery service problems and complaints, particularly those of its drivers and staff on the ground, have only worsened. This research aims to understand how Lazada delivery drivers handled the delivery system during COVID-19; to discuss the reasons why Lazada delivery drivers chose this job during the pandemic; and to analyze the experiences and challenges faced by delivery drivers during COVID-19. The researchers visited a Lazada delivery hub and interviewed ten willing participants using qualitative methodologies. The participants were questioned about their experiences and challenges, and overall satisfaction with their jobs. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed disdain for COVID safety regulations as well as a tendency for riders to push themselves to work despite difficult conditions, although company support was given. The majority of everyday difficulties faced by the regular delivery rider are mostly customer-related, with customers who are not at home and customers who cancel orders at the last minute being the most frequent. Despite the bad stigma associated with them, drivers value their careers highly. The pandemic was difficult for most drivers, who had to face the various stricter protocols and regulations, with some having to deal with a decrease in their salaries. Most drivers handled the pandemic through grit and perseverance alone, using their families as motivation to continue despite the hardships. A lot of the drivers also chose their jobs because of the financial incentive and their familiarity with driving. Many of the challenges they face are customer-related, which they try their best to solve with understanding and patience
Determinants of Filipino Workers\u27 Intention to Retain Overseas Employment in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
This study focuses on determining which factors have influence on the intention of the overseas Filipino workers in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates to retain their overseas employment in the said country. Variables under push and pull factors, personal factors, and work-related factors are hypothesized to be important determinants and so are tested through the binary logistic regression with the use of primary, cross-sectional data collected within July 2022.
Findings of the study indicate that push and pull factors related to environmental and political settings of the home and foreign country are not statistically significant while some of the personal factors and work-related factors have significant influence. The share of employed members in the household and the educational attainment have negative influence on the dependent variable under study and are part of personal factors, while the risk of injury or level of safety in the workplace and the career growth opportunities have positive direction and are part of work-related factors. Policy recommendations are associated with possible government efforts towards employability and employment opportunities. Meanwhile, the study has a limitation in its sample size and can still be increased and widened in scope in similar studies in the future
Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos), nutritional status, and food intake among women aged 18 to 49 years diagnosed with Pcos
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects 5% to 15% of women worldwide, yet there remains a gap in understanding knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning this condition. This study investigates KAP among diagnosed women aged 18- 49 years, and its relationship with nutritional status and food intake. Convenience sampling and online surveys were utilized for data collection. KAP levels were assessed using percent mean scores categorized as poor (≤ 39.9%), moderate (40% - 79.9%), and high (≥ 80%). Spearman rank test was applied to analyze relationships between KAP, nutritional status, and food intake. Eighty-five (85) women with PCOS participated, revealing high knowledge, neutral attitudes, and moderate practices related to PCOS. More than half displayed abnormal BMI and are at risk of metabolic complications. Sugar was consumed three to four times weekly by the majority. While no significant KAP-nutritional status link was found, a noteworthy correlation emerged between KAP levels and specific food intake. The study highlights the need for further research to improve PCOS women\u27s attitudes and practices, and to understand factors impacting their nutritional choices

Demographic profile of Saug Watershed
This study aims to fully understand the stakeholder communities within and around the periphery of Saug watershed. Hence a demographic characterization was conducted. The watershed was classified into three categories namely upstream, midstream and downstream since economic activity in the watershed varies in a different strategic locations. Barangays [villages] within the watersheds was chosen by means of simple random sampling and secondary data were gathered from municipal profiles available in the internet. Respondents from the different barangays were randomly selected to avoid researcher bias. A total of 2110 respondents were interviewed using an individual household survey questionnaire. Results of the survey showed that majority of the respondents were male at 84.69 percent and belong to 3 to 4 household size. Around 90% of the respondents belong to the productive or working population and has median age of 54 years old. Around 84.36% or 1780 respondents are already married while only 6.49% or 137 are still single. The rest are separated, widowed or unknown during the time of the interview. Most of them are Catholics with a percent distribution of 69.81%. Majority of the respondents of Saug watershed are Cebuano in ethnic origin and around 36.87% know how to speak and understand the Filipino language. It has a literacy rate of 96.82% and roughly 3% declared that have no access to formal education
Climate change influences on watershed landscape patterns and water quality: Project 3.2 of enhancing food security through synergistic climate change adaptation program in biodiversity and agriculture
The Mounts of Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Area is considered as one of the remaining forested areas in Southern Luzon. It supports a range of floral and faunal diversity and endemicity. However, this rich biodiversity is threatened by changes in climate that can result in significant alterations in the variables and processes that effect water quality and freshwater biodiversity. Watershed management emphasizes the interrelationships of landscape structure and functions that would serve to rehabilitate and preserve landscape services, particularly for the agricultural sector and for biodiversity conservation. As such, this project looked into the land use changes of the Tayabas subwatershed in Quezon Province and assessed the water quality, fish and macrobenthos diversity. Six observation stations were established. Of these, 5 stations are of Class C water quality and 1 of Class AA quality. This very pristine site is located within the Mt. Banahaw protected area. Fish and macrobenthos samplings were conducted at these sites and results from dry and wet seasons were compared. A total of 72 (wet season) and 404 (dry season) individuals belonging to 12 species and 7 families were collected for freshwater fish. Out of 12 species, 7 are introduced and 5 are native species predominated by Gobiidae family. For macrobenthos, pollution tolerant organisms are evident at only 2 downstream stations. Not statistically significant differences in fish and macrobenthos diversities were observed from each period of sampling. This together with the water quality information, is taken to indicate the relatively healthy condition of the waterways in the study area. On the other hand, landcover change between 2006 and 2014 indicate a gradual increase in built-up areas with urbanization expanding into the Iyam watershed and agro-industrial zones increasing into the Dumacaa subwatershed. In order to preserve the relatively good quality of the waterways in Tayabas City, regulatory recommendations that can be implemented at the local government unit level are put forward towards the end of this report. These recommendations focus more on preventive approaches over restorative actions and the simplicity of these recommendations hopefully increase the probability of their implementation at the grassroots level
The Use of Open Data Kit (ODK) in Characterizing the Cacao Industry Sites in Panay Island
Cacao is one of the world\u27s most valuable export commodities and cash crops. Western Visayas, along with the other regions in the Philippines, has committed to participate in national efforts to strengthen the production capacity of the cacao industry and address prospects and opportunities for the industry growth and development. This paper presents the results of a region-wide study that mapped out and assessed key cacao-producing areas in Western Visayas, specifically Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo. The study sought their current production levels, important agricultural properties of farming areas, production densities, and growth potentials. Geospatial data was generated, analyzed, and mapped using Open Data Kit (ODK), an electronic data management system. Findings revealed that cacao plantations are not evenly distributed in Panay Island. Most cacao farms are located in the Province of Iloilo, however, tree density was highest at farms in the Province of Capiz. The geophysical characteristics of most cocoa-producing areas were consistent with the geophysical elements mentioned in the literature. These findings can be used for science-based decisions for promoting the emerging cacao industry in Panay Island
