Preliminary Study on the seed production of okra during the wet season
Of the six varieties of okra tested for seed yield during the wet season, native brown with a mean seed yield of 455.3 grams per plot 0r 18.23 kilograns per hectare was found best adapted; whereas Louisiana Green Velvet with a mean yield of 201.4 grams per plot or 8.06 kilograms per hectare the poorest
Sewfiya: An Entrepreneurial Venture Report
SewFiya was established in response to the urgent need to address the adverse environmental impact of fast fashion. Through the innovative recovery of donated fabrics, repurposed garments, and surplus inventories, SewFiya produces a diverse range of products and unique clothing creations. One product offered are reworked items, repurposing existing fabrics, particularly those with outdated styles and patterns. Next are the “katsa” tops. These are used flour sacks, mostly from big local bakeries, washed and tailored to a classic style: Cropped Polo and Halter Tops. Lastly, the Kumot Tops which are produced from scratch. These classic Filipino blankets are priced lower than regular blankets as they are no longer in high demand and are sewn by local tailors to fit the current fashion trend.. The initial sales experience of the business revealed that achieving high sales numbers is much more challenging than anticipated. The majority of sales in the first month were made to friends, classmates, and relatives, which is not an ideal target audience as they may not consistently support the business in the long term.
Over the next five years, the fashion industry will witness a significant shift towards sustainability, driven by the need for efficient resource management and environmental conservation. SewFiya aims to align with this trend by prioritizing sustainability, transparency, and traceability in its practices. Building trust with consumers through transparent and honest sustainability practices is vital. With 66% of global consumers willing to pay more for sustainable products, fashion brands need to adapt their business models and educate customers accordingly
Numerical quantification of surface runoff and soil erosion using PCRaster
Surface runoff and soil erosion of the Upper Lagawe River Sub-watershed, Ifugao Province, Philippines were quantified using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based numerical simulation. PCRaster software was used as a framework for the model. Manning’s and Rose, and Freebairn’s Equations were utilized to compute surface runoff velocity and sediment mass. Analysis and comparison of the measured and predicted streamflow yielded a mean Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency Index of 0.70, a mean percent bias of - 8.38%, and a mean root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.16. Based on the model, super typhoon Lando (international name: Koppu) generated an estimated surface runoff volume of 186000 m3 and an estimated sediment mass of 36587 kg for the entire sub-watershed. The mass of eroded sediments equated to 18.6 kg/ ha of erosion rate just for the said super typhoon. Stable ecosystems, such as the Upper Lagawe River Subwatershed, where forest vegetation is intact and farmers practice soil conservation techniques are still vulnerable to the effects of extreme rainstorm events, can generate voluminous surface runoff and eroded sediments
Assessment of the Adoption of Kooperatibang may Asenso, Yaman at Abilidad (KAYA) Payment Platform of the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) by the Selected Credit Cooperatives in Romblon, 2022
The study assessed the adoption of Kooperatibang may Asenso, Yaman at Abilidad (KAYA) payment platform of the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) by the selected credit cooperatives in Romblon, 2022. Specifically, the study (1) described the socio-economic characteristics of cooperative members who adopted and did not adopt the services offered under the KAYA payment platform, (2) evaluated the experience, satisfaction, and perception of cooperative members and management towards the adoption and usage of the services offered under the KAYA payment platform, (3) determined the factors that influence the decision of the cooperative members in adopting the KAYA payment platform, and (4) developed recommendations based on the research results to improve the implementation of the KAYA payment platform.
Stratified random sampling using proportional allocation was done in choosing the 84 respondents, consisting of 41 adopters of KAYA platform and 43 non-adopters of KAYA platform. Primary data were utilized in the study through personal and online surveys of cooperative members of the selected credit cooperatives in Romblon.
Descriptive analysis was used to describe the socio-economic factors along with external factors like the accessibility of KAYA-compatible devices, the quality of the mobile services in the area, and their own perceptions on digital payment. Likert scale was used to measure the technological literacy levels of cooperative members, assess the satisfaction, experience, and perception of members and administration of the selected cooperatives toward the KAYA payment platform. Lastly, binary logistic regression was used to identify the factors affecting the decision of a cooperative member in whether to adopt or not to adopt the KAYA platform.
Results showed that the age of the KAYA adopters was in the 41-50 category. In addition, the respondents in this study were individuals who had completed their college education, specifically in the field of education. Most of them belonged to a low-income group, but were not considered poor. The respondents considered themselves highly proficient in using their laptops, smartphones, and tablets for social media platforms. However, when it comes to using digital platforms, both the adopters and non-adopters felt neutral, or they did not feel confident. Different access methods for the KAYA payment platform were online applications (i.e., mobile banking), over-the-counter services, and ATM services. Adopters primarily used mobile banking for balance inquiries, while non- adopters had reservations about digital payment platforms and preferred traditional banking. Adopters enjoyed using the platform but faced limitations, especially in mobile services. Educational attainment and positive perceptions of digital payment platforms were identified as significant factors influencing adoption. Higher educational attainment and favorable perceptions increased the likelihood of adopting the KAYA platform.
Based on the results, the study recommended the following, (1) increase consistent KAYA access, (2) increase utility for KAYA application, (3) add information campaigns on instruction and use of KAYA application, (4) simplify KAYA account retrieval, and (5) for future researchers: include cooperative financial indicators in the analysis
Online trade of live freshwater turtles and tortoises in the Philippines
Freshwater turtles and tortoises are highly threatened by illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade. The trade has been thriving online, particularly on social media platforms, in recent decades. We conducted a two-year online survey on 20 Facebook groups in 2019–2020 and reviewed CITES trade data from 1990–2019 (30 yr) to elucidate chelonian trade dynamics in the Philippines. A total of 5,801 individuals representing 77 taxa were documented for sale on Facebook in 2019–2020. The 10 most commonly traded species represented 79% of the total quantity, and Centrochelys sulcata (n = 1,211) was the most offered for sale. The analysis of 307 CITES trade records showed that the Philippines imported between 3,365 (importer-reported) and 4,279 (exporter-reported) live chelonians of 39 species from 21 countries and territories during the 30-yr period. There were 23 CITES Appendix-listed species, including six species listed on Appendix I, documented for sale on Facebook but without import records from the CITES Trade Database such as Astrochelys radiata (n = 47), Astrochelys yniphora (n = 2), Geochelone platynota (n = 30), Geoclemys hamiltonii (n = 30), Pangshura tecta (n = 42), and Pyxis arachnoides (n = 3). Whereas the origins of these species were uncertain (e.g. pre-CITES convention; smuggled), some individuals may be poached from the wild, recently smuggled, and illegally offered in the country. Our results show that the wildlife trade continues to thrive on Facebook. Greater cooperation among conservation groups, wildlife authorities, and social media platforms and appropriate actions are urgently needed to curtail illegal online wildlife trade proliferation
Effects of Social Media Content and User Engagement on the Purchase Intention of the Customers of Coffee Shops in Imus, Cavite
This study aims to investigate the effects of social media content and user engagement on the purchase intention of customers in coffee shops located in Imus, Cavite. The popularity and widespread availability of social media platforms has changed how businesses interact with their customers. Social media platforms allowed businesses to communicate with their customers real-time, respond to their messages and comments promptly, and address concerns. Additionally, customers share feedback and experience with a business on social media. With this, businesses can understand the customers’ expectations, needs, and preferences. Understanding these and how it influences the purchase intention can help coffee shop owners enhance customer relationship and develop effective marketing strategies.
The researcher used online surveys to gather data from both the coffee shop customers living in Imus, and coffee shop owners and managers located in Imus. A total of 140 coffee shop customers in Imus, Cavite, was selected, and data was collected regarding their social media usage, engagement with the coffee shops’ social media content, their purchase intentions, and frequency and time of visiting the coffee shops’ social media pages. The researcher employed used descriptive statistics, particularly mean for the questions about social media usage, engagement with the coffee shops’ social media content, and their purchase intentions, and mode for the frequency and time of visiting the coffee shops’ social media pages. Additionally, correlational analysis was used to determine the relationships between social media usage, online engagements, and purchase intention.
The study explored the effect of social media usage to the purchase intention of customers. The study specifically focused on the following social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. The results of the study showed that content posted on Instagram led to the highest purchase intention among the three social media platforms studied. Additionally, photos is the preferred content format of the customers when it comes to engagements and purchase intention.
Purchase intentions were found to be positively impact by higher levels of user engagement, such as likes, comments, and shares on social media content. The popularity of the coffee shop and the quality of the products they offer were shown through user participation and reviews, establishing a feeling of credibility that influenced consumers\u27 purchase decisions.
Based on the results, coffee shop owners in Imus, Cavite, are recommended to maximize social media platforms, create visually appealing content, publish digital content regularly, and engage actively with customers to significantly increase online engagement rates that would lead to positive purchase intentions. Furthermore, the study recommends monitoring social media metrics, using business dashboards that are available on social media platforms, to evaluate the success of marketing campaigns and make informed decisions. Based on customer preferences and evolving trends, coffee shop owners should continuously modify their social media marketing plan, by creating relevant content based on the emerging trends and follower data that may be obtained through the business tools available on the platforms.
Overall, this study offers information about the effects of social media content and user engagement on the purchase intention of coffee shop customers in Imus, Cavite. The study provides owners of coffee shops with recommendations on how to maximize their social media presence, increase social media engagement, and ultimately boost purchase intention. enabling coffee shops to focus their marketing efforts on these platforms
the Influence of Nitrogen Nutrition Population Density on the Yield and Yield Components of Grain Sorghum at Fifty Centimeter Row Spacing
Two sorghum varieties , Darso and Feterita, were subjected to three nitrogen rates and three population densities. The experiment was conducted during the dry season (1967) and during the wet season (1968) at the Central Experiment Station, U.P. College of Agriculture.
Heading for Feterita was earlier than Darso during the dry season but later during the wet season. While Darsp was not affected by season. Feterita prolonged its vegetative phase which would account for taller plants during the wet season. As nitrogen increased from 50 to 100 and 150 kilogrmas per hectare, heading was hastened.
Grain yield for Darso was higher than Feterita during the dry season. Nitrogen treatments, 1000 and 150 kilograms, gave significantly higher yield than 50-kilogram nitrogen rate. Grain yield was also increased during the dry season as plant population increased from 100,000 to 150,000 and 200,000 plants per hectare
Taxonomy and ecology of some Philippine cave spiders
A new tarantula species of the genus Phlogiellus Pocock, 1897, P. kwebaburdeos n.sp. is described and illustrated based on a series of specimens collected inside the Puting Bato Cave 3-4 in Burdeos, Polilio Island, Quezon Province, Pilippines. P. kwebaburdeos Barrion-Dupo, Barrion and Rasalan n. sp., a cave-dwelling mygalomorph spider represents the fifth and sixteenth species of Phlogiellus reported in the Philippines and in the South-and Southeast Asia, respectively
National Research and Development Project for Watershed Management Saug Watershed in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley Province [Philippines]
This three-year study was implemented in Saug watershed from April 2012 to December 2014 to determine the physical, biological, socio-economic characteristics, vulnerability assessment and instrumentation as to climatic and hydrological condition of the watershed. Results of the physical study showed that Saug watershed had an area of 99.871 hectares encompassing 9 municipalities, one city and 85 barangays [villages] within Davao del Norte and Campostela Valley provinces. Results of the water quality study showed that water pollution is affected by various land uses. Higher pollution with lower water pH, lower DO, higher conductivity and higher salinity were observed in stream tributaries were land uses were annual crops such as rice and banana compared with streams with perennial crops such as coconut brushlands/grasslands and secondary forest as land use. Results of the soil erosion rate study showed that for napier grass was more effective in controlling soil erosion at 5 tons per ha/yr compared to string beans with 6 tons/ha/yr and the bare uncultivated plot (control) with 8 tons per ha/yr. Biological survey showed that for overstorey floral species, low species diversity at 0.67, 0.89 for understorey species and 0.61 for regeneration species. The avifaunal survey show 76 individuals of birds from 12 species were recorded during the dry season and 44 individuals from 11 species during the wet season. Only 2 species of mammals and one reptile species were observed. Arthropod survey showed high species diversity (3.17) during the dry season than the wet season (2.6). A total of 991 species from 7 taxonomic classes, 22 orders and 97 families were recorded. Fungal survey showed low diversity index of 2.11, 1.84 and 2.06 in forest, agroforest and open brushland consisting 4 classes, 7 orders, 13 families and 84 species. The existing biomass was computed at 25.51 tons per hectare and the carbon stock was 12.75 tons per hectare. Socio-economic profiling showed a high population of the watershed with a total of more than one fourth of a million people at 263,634 people per 2010 NSO data. About 98.82% are literate while the rest are illiterate. Farming is the main occupation comprising 34.31% of respondents while the laborers comprised 13.40%. More than 89% were below poverty line. About 15,573.62 hectares or 15.60% of Saug watershed is vulnerable to flood while many areas are vulnerable to landslides while downstream rivers are prone to water pollution
