FACTORS AFFECTING THE TYPE OF PRO-ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOR OF SELECTED PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN CITY OF SAN PEDRO, LAGUNA
Pro-Environmental behaviors (PEB) are any actions aimed at protecting the environment from harmful anthropogenic behaviors and activities. It has been highlighted that fostering PEBs, most especially among adolescents, may be especially crucial as they are inheritors of the Earth. However, as reviewed in previous studies, its development is affected by myriad factors that may be unique to each individual. Thus, literature having only been focused mainly on western countries and the adult population (18 years and above) may not exactly translate to the Philippine youth population. Hence, the study was conducted to assess which of the contextual factors (age/ grade level, sex, income class, and source of environmental education) affect the type of PEBs (advocate, green consumer, conservationist, green passenger, and waste avoider) of high school students in City of San Pedro, Laguna, a rapidly urbanizing city with a growing population of adolescents. A total of 385 students were surveyed through self-administered questionnaires. The major findings suggest that contextual factors are only lowly associated with selected PEBs, with grade level showing associations with all PEB types, while Environmental Education shows little to no associations with any PEBs
Use of Online Food Delivery (OFD) platform and nutritional status of sophomore college students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines
This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the association between online food delivery (OFD) usage and nutritional status of sophomore students at UPLB using proportionate stratified sampling and an online self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and tests of independence were used to assess association at p≤0.05. The study revealed that 61.2% of the respondents had normal nutritional status, while 21.5% were underweight. In terms of OFD usage, most respondents used OFD platforms 1 to 3 times monthly (44.41%), with an average expenditure of \u3c251 pesos per transaction (44.69%). FoodPanda (54.75%) was the most patronized platform. More than half of the respondents had meat or meat-based or meat alternatives (65.92%) as their most frequently purchased category. Convenience was the general rationale for patronizing OFD services. However, no sufficient evidence was obtained regarding the association between OFD usage and nutritional status (p≤0.05). In conclusion, while it was evident that OFD platforms have contributed to the eating habits of sophomore students at UPLB, the acquired data was not enough to prove its relationship to nutritional status. Hence, further investigation would be needed to come up with conclusive findings

Home environment satisfaction and study motivation of adolescent students in Gawad Kalinga housing project in Los baños, Laguna
Despite the significant impact of the house interior and family on academic performance, limited research exists on the influence of housing project quality on students\u27 home study motivation. Thus, this mixed-method study aimed to 1) describe the home environment satisfaction of adolescent students; 2) analyze its importance to study motivation; 3) assess contributing factors to motivation and demotivation, and 4) analyze the relationship between home satisfaction and study motivation. The sample comprised 141 students aged 10-19 from Gawad Kalinga, Los Banos, Laguna. Descriptive statistics, content analysis, and Spearman\u27s rank correlation coefficient were used for analysis. Results showed that the adolescents were satisfied with the physical and social aspects of their homes, but identified areas such as noise level, temperature, lighting, and house size that needed improvement. Both the physical and social aspects were important for the students\u27 motivation, except for parental pressure and comparison. Motivating factors for students\u27 study motivation included access to study materials, a personal quiet study space, food, and family support, while factors that demotivated them included technology, noise, chores, limited space, and hot temperature. A significant correlation was found between study motivation and home satisfaction. The study suggests the importance of supportive family dynamics, adequate study resources, and well-equipped homes, particularly in housing projects, to create conducive learning environments. Recommendations are provided for various stakeholders and future research. Overall, this study highlights the importance of the physical and social home environment in promoting adolescents\u27 study motivation at home and its implications for academic outcomes
Utilizing official statistics and data envelopment analysis in contructing a Philippine Vector-Borne Disease Vulnerability Index
Recent and past outbreaks and epidemic events of vector-borne diseases in the Philippines suggest a need for a tool to monitor situations in the country. With the objective to determine how vulnerable Philippine locations are to vector-borne diseases (VBD), a composite VBD vulnerability index (VBDVI) was constructed using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The index incorporated various indicators collected from official statistics grouped into six dimensions. Statistical maps were also constructed to visualize and ascertain hotspots. According to results, lists of vulnerable locations differed across dimensions but province of Basilan appeared to be the most vulnerable while the province of Siquijor was the least vulnerable. Remarkably, most vulnerable locations were in Mindanao making the geographical area a potential hotspot of vector-borne diseases. Results of uncertainty analyses showed potential strengths and weaknesses that challenged the validity of VBDVI. Nonetheless, results showed that VBDVI appeared useful in classifying the most vulnerable locations. Comparison of actual rates and VBDVI presented concordance. Moreover, outputs showed an acceptable resemblance of VBDVI to actual rates with percentage errors ranging from 1.72% to 2.21% only. Though VBDVI was not constructed to directly predict outbreaks, it can give us comprehensive idea in identifying locations that need practical and apt support, and ultimately negate emerging threats of vector-borne diseases
Price Formation and Price Symmetry Analysis: the Case of Smooth Love Potion (SLP) Cryptocurrency
This study attempts to determine the price formation and price symmetry of the Smooth Love Potion (SLP) cryptocurrency. SLP can be earned by playing the Axie Infinity game which was released in 2018 and is one of the first play-to-earn games released. The earned SLPs can then be traded in coin exchange platforms for money, like any other cryptocurrencies. In 2021, the Philippines was considered as the country with the most number of players comprising 40% of the total players of the game which reached up until 2 million players at that time. The quantity theory of money was used for establishing the price formation model of SLP. The predictor variables included are the SLP velocity, stock, and transaction volume and the outcome variable is the SLP price. Overall results showed that the actual relationships of the velocity and transaction volume to the SLP price are opposite to that of the hypothesized relationships which are based on the propositions of the quantity theory and that the SLP stock is non-significant. The price symmetry model by Houck (1977) was used for the second analysis and the results showed that the SLP price exhibit a positive asymmetric behavior. A sensitivity analysis was also conducted in order to test the integrity of the results of the overall study. The price series was divided into two price windows through the identification of the structural break using the Dummy Variable approach. Results of price formation analysis in the first price window showed the same results like the overall study. The second price window introduced two new variables representing the SLP\u27s attraction to investors. Results showed that the velocity and negative attractions exhibit the opposite relationship with the SLP price and the rest follow the hypothesized relationship. For the price symmetry analysis, both price windows exhibit a positive asymmetric behavior
The prospect of having a part-time or full-time career in mobile esports in the Philippines
During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite many industries being struck by immense damages, the mobile esports industry recorded exponential growth nonetheless. This study investigates the prospect of having a part-time or full-time career in mobile esports in the Philippines. The researchers gathered relevant data, such as possible careers and career dimensions, regarding the mobile esports industry through thorough table research. Four (4) careers (professional players, online streamers, shoutcasters/ hosts, and team managers) are directly linked to the act of playing, and three (3) dimensions (financial gain, growth and tenureship, and work-life balance) are significant to the overall work experience in the industry were also identified. The researchers then conducted key informant interviews with willing professional stakeholders from the industry. The researchers identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the industry from the interviews and analyzed the resulting data by implementing a SWOT analysis. In turn, with the interplay among its SWOT, the industry faces threats in growth and tenureship and weaknesses in work-life balance, but it can seize opportunities for financial gain. Mobile esports should capitalize on its vast financial assets to conduct research and development and foster education on growth and tenureship and work-life balance to resolve weaknesses and mitigate threats in these two dimensions. Pursuing a part-time or full-time career in the mobile esports industry in the Philippines is more feasible with the resolution of the identified issues within the industry. Education is also important as it helps the people within the industry address their interpersonal issues and promote growth and tenureship within the industry. Implementing policies regarding work-life balance is another significant task to establish a more supportive and healthier working environment for professionals
A content analysis on top most popular Kid-Friendly Youtube videos: assessing the rish-effect of online video contents on child development
Due to current advancements in technology, society has evolved to have an increased dependency on gadgets and the internet. This study aims to focus on a particular phenomenon related to this, which is children\u27s consumption of online content, specifically YouTube Kids, and its risks to their development. Breaking it down, the objectives of this research include: (1) identifying which specific elements in videos bring forth harmful messages to kids by checking the following aspects: age appropriateness, content quality, design features, and learning objectives; (2) recognizing recurring inappropriate themes that are embedded in the supposedly safe shows; and (3) determining the potential negative effects kids may experience from watching these videos. A YouTube Video Evaluation Rubric from Neumann and Herodotou\u27s paper, Evaluating YouTube Videos for Young Children, in 2020 was used to assess 2 videos from 6 most-subscribed English-speaking channels creating “kid-friendly” content based on Statista 2021. Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) discussion with experts were done to validate the concluding result from the initial data gathered. The results show that 7 out of 12 of the videos are not recommended to children. Most of the videos scored low in the learning objectives criterion, as they lacked learning elements that will support children’s cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional growth. Some videos also included potentially scary elements and inappropriate behavior reinforcement. Furthermore, issues focusing on the subconscious internalizing of unprogressive norms, imitating improper attitudes and actions, and a lack of social and sensory learning were observed. The study hopes to spark more studies in relation to this issue, as it emphasizes the importance of the experiences that children have in their formative years and their association with their internet consumption
A narrative of selected Grade 12 Students: visual entertainment as coping mechanism during Covid lockdown
Coping has been a subject studied by many. In March 2020, the whole country was put on lockdown to prevent the further spread of the COVID-19 virus, resulting in a lot of people staying locked in their homes. Since people were stuck in their homes, a lot of them consumed audiovisual media as a coping mechanism due to the stress brought to them by the pandemic. In this study, the personal statements of select UPRHS Senior High School students were gathered in order to unearth some insights regarding their own experiences with using visual media as a coping mechanism. The participants for this phenomenological study were selected based on whether they consumed media during the pandemic or not, and were interviewed via Facebook Messenger, as well as in-person, regarding the stories about their own ways of coping through visual media . A narrative approach was used to analyze the data the study obtained, taking into account factors, such as stressants, consumption period. The study showed that consuming media during the pandemic helped the participants stabilize their mental health and keep them from getting bored, generally impacting them positively. Using visual media as a coping mechanism is a valid way of dealing with stress and boredom; it is recommended to try using media as a way of coping during long periods of isolation in order to lessen the degree of boredom experienced
