Validation of REFRESH: A dietary screener for rapid evaluation for environmentally sustainable and healthy diets
Background: The urgency of promoting sustainable diets, coupled with limited knowledge of dietary sustainability among health professionals, highlights the need for simple tools to assist in advocating for such diets in clinical settings. Objectives: We aimed to design a dietary screener to assess dietary healthiness and environmental sustainability, and validate it. Methods: Rapid Evaluation FoR Environmentally Sustainable and Healthy diets (REFRESH) is a dichotomous tool targeting 10 key food groups for healthy diets with low environmental impacts. Each food group is scored as either 0 or 1 point, resulting in a total score ranging from 0 to 10-where 0 indicates the lowest and 10 the highest adherence to an environmentally sustainable and healthy diet. Internal consistency was assessed using the Kuder Richardson-20 (KR-20) coefficient. REFRESH's relative validity was compared against food diaries, evaluating item agreement, and using Bland-Altman analysis for the total REFRESH score. Cross-classification was tested in low, medium, and high adherence to sustainable healthy diets, along with weighted kappa index. Construct validity was evaluated through Pearson correlation between REFRESH-derived scores and health-promoting and detrimental food groups and nutrients, and environmental impact indicators, as derived from food diaries. Results: REFRESH had a KR-20 coefficient of 0.70, indicating good internal consistency. It showed high agreement with food diaries (60%-88% item agreement), and Bland-Altman analysis indicated that mean REFRESH scores were 1.1 points higher than food diaries. Cross-classification showed 59% agreement between methods, with only 1% of participants misclassified in the opposite category. REFRESH-derived scores positively correlated with health-promoting food groups and nutrients, and negatively with detrimental ones. Higher scores were linked to reduced environmental impacts. Conclusions: REFRESH has demonstrated good validity for assessing dietary healthiness and environmental sustainability, helping identify individuals with suboptimal diets.
With a little kelp from my friends? Understanding individual and team success in the Summer Olympics
Objective
This paper investigates the determinants of Olympic success, examining why some countries excel in individual sports while others perform better in team sports. We propose three explanations: (1) a multiplicative effect, where success in individual sports boosts team sport performance; (2) the influence of collectivist cultures, which favor team sports; and (3) a contingent perspective, where economic development and population size enhance the effects of collectivism.
Methods
We use data from three Summer Olympic Games (2016-2024): Rio de Janeiro (2016), Tokyo (2021), and Paris (2024), and run ordinary least squares regressions to test the hypotheses.
Results
Economic development and population size are stronger predictors of success in sports with more talented participants. Collectivism boosts team sports performance in economically developed, highly populated countries, with minimal effect in less developed countries.
Conclusion
The findings offer policy insights for governments to optimize Olympic preparation strategies and improve medal chances
Modern griots in the FYP: digital (re)existence on brazilian TikTok
Treball de fi de màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i DiversitatSupervisor: Carles Roca-CuberesThis thesis investigates how Brazilian influencers from marginalized communities use TikTok to resist epistemicide and assert cultural identity. Drawing on the concept of the modern griot the study examines the digital transformation of traditional knowledge through oral storytelling, aesthetic strategies, and emotional performances. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 99 TikTok videos from creators @pretaletrada, @cristianwariu, and @deusacientista. Using deductive coding and thematic synthesis within a decolonial communicative framework, the research treats TikTok not as a neutral platform but as a contested space shaped by extractive logics, yet open to tactical appropriation. The analysis identifies five key narrative themes: digital (re)existence, knowledge in performance, cosmologies of the self, narratives of belonging, and subversive futures. These themes demonstrate how creators navigate platform constraints to affirm cultural memory and identity. This study contributes to understanding the continuity between ancestral knowledge and digital expression, showing that these modern griots actively reshape storytelling in the algorithmic age. The findings highlight alternative modes of knowledge production that challenge dominant digital logics, advancing discussions on resistance and representation in digital media
This essay is an attempt to demonstrate, that International Criminal Law flexibilizes substantially the requirements for the recognition of international criminal norms with the objective of maintaining an apparently strict principle of legality. However, this approach is unsatisfactory, since there is a concealed recourse to suprapositive principles which are disguised as positive Law. Therefore, the formula proposed by Gustav Radbruch represents a more sincere way to face the question of the limits of positive Law. Hence this essay emphasizes the methodological value of this formula and analyzes its scope and problems regarding its application
Conceptual frameworks, competencies, contents and teaching methods in planetary health education for health students and professionals: a global systematic scoping review
Background: Planetary Health studies the impact of the global environmental crisis on health. Urgent transdisciplinary, intersectoral, and holistic solutions adapted to local realities are needed. Designing training programs attuned to contextual needs of diverse groups and geographical areas is crucial. Planetary health programs are emerging worldwide, but little is known about their scope and learning outcomes. A systematic scoping review is needed to shed light on the state of planetary health education. Objectives: This review aims to identify existing frameworks, competencies, content, and teaching methods in planetary health education. Methods: Following PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines, we included studies targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students, focusing on skills, knowledge, and abilities related to planetary health, published in English or Spanish. No exclusions were made based on geographic area, study design, or publication period. Databases consulted were MEDLINE via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest. Selection and data extraction processes were conducted systematically. Results: We included 73 articles, with 88% from high-income countries and 49% focused on health professionals. Conceptual frameworks identified include "One Health," "Sustainable Development Goals," and the "Planetary Health Education Framework." Transversal skills (complex problem-solving, systemic thinking, collaboration, interdisciplinary) and specific competencies (understanding health interactions with climate change, pollution) were outlined in 45% of studies. Half of the studies described 23 general topics and 93 specific content areas. Teaching methods included in-person (59%), virtual (12%), and hybrid models (29%). Conclusions: This review highlights the heterogeneity in conceptual frameworks, competencies, content, and teaching methods in planetary health education for health professionals. Future research should focus on developing and evaluating evidence-based educational models to address the evolving challenges of planetary health. Recommendations include enhancing collaboration among stakeholders and integrating innovative teaching methods to improve planetary health education. Trial registration: The protocol has been registered in the Open Science Framework database (registration number: osf.io/h2b3j, March 2024). Clinical trial number: not applicable. The CATA-Earth project has received funding from the European Union’s Erasmus + programme under Grant Agreement no. 101128952. Didactic transmedia storytelling: the case of Josep and the teaching of Catalan
This article explores the exploitation of the film Josep (Aurel, 2020), a biopic inspired by the life of the communist artist Josep Bartolí based on his own illustrations. The particularity of this material is twofold: it is a multilingual animated film (French, Catalan, Spanish and English), which will help us to highlight and work on the skills required in a multilingual environment; and there is also a comic inspired by the film (Aurel et al., 2020) that was published at the same time as the film's release. A clear case of "transmedial storytelling and diversification" (Rippl & Etter, 2013, p. 191) is faced, in which a film is brought to a book format. These two formats (audiovisual and visual-textual) provide us with two different types of material with which to work comprehensively, not only on linguistic competences but also on cultural and historical ones, with scenarios that are highly attractive and motivating for learners. This proposal aims to contribute to the discipline by presenting the didactic opportunities that audiovisual translation (interlingual subtitling and dubbing) has as a mediation tool in language teaching and the learning of Catalan, through activities taken from the film and its comic Josep in several teaching-learning scenarios
