    No full text
Political Ideology, Power, and Contradictions in the Chinese Popular Cinema: from the 2012 Turn to Nowadays

    No full text
Since President Xi Jinping assumed office in 2012, there has been a notable shift in Chinese popular cinema. This thesis seeks to address a gap in existing literature by investigating the connections between cinema, political ideology, and power dynamics, particularly from 2012 onward. The project adopts a critical-theoretical approach, drawing on thinkers from Marx to Habermas, with a focus on cinema within its sociopolitical contexts and power relations as the primary theoretical and methodological frameworks for studying Chinese popular cinema. In this context, I view Chinese popular cinema as an ideological institution a collection of participations that engages with the Chinese mass audience and both reflects and shapes the socio-political reality. To explore this, I have selected six of the top-grossing movies in China to analyze to reveal how cinematic narratives not only mirror but also perpetuate societal power dynamics and ideological constructs. This exploration contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate dimensions of Chinese popular cinema within the broader global landscape of film studies. The Fight for Intersectional Claims: An Analysis of Women in Movement

    No full text
This dissertation examines women's political representation and participation from an intersectional perspective in Catalonia. It encompasses three different, yet interconnected research articles. The first paper analyses the claim-making process within the feminist movement. It finds that employing intersectional solidarity enables the improvement of the descriptive, substantive, and constitutive representation of minoritized women and gender minorities. The second article studies the intersectional dynamics of inclusion and exclusion within the feminist movement. It identifies the process of marginalization among women and emphasizes the role of emotions in the transformation of feminist practices. The third article explores the informal rules that facilitate or hinder the participation of women in the racial justice movement, the LGBTI+ movement, and the disability rights movement. It shows how male privilege is sustained, the informal rules that distribute resources in a fairer way among groups, and the factors that contribute to adopting more equitable rules.

Translation and cultural development: historical approaches

Antoine Berman (1984, 12) stated, in a much-cited phrase, that the constitution of a history of translation is the first task of a modern theory of translation. Verdicts of a similar nature have been presented by Bassnett (1980, 38), D'Hulst (1991, 61; 1995, 14), Lambert (1993, 22) and Delisle (1997-1998, 22). Works of a historical nature (whether they be the study of a past translation, a translated author, a translator or a translator theorist) play a leadingTaylor and Francis role within the rich bibliography produced by the discipline, and in the numerous debates, conferences and all kinds of scientific encounters on translation. According to D'Hulst (2014, 21), when discussing the topic of translation history, two different perspectives can be adopted: on the one hand, the study of what translation means for the understanding of history; on the other, what history means for the understanding of translation. In D'Hulst's opinion (2010), the latter viewpoint can itself be understood in three different ways: (1) history can be the narration of the sequence of facts, events or ideas; (2) historiography can be the history of history-writing; (3) metahistoriography can be the explicit reflection on the concepts and methods of historiography. Other authors distinguish between just history and historiography (e.g. Apak 2003). In this respect, for example, Woodsworth mentions that "a distinction can be made between history, understood as the events of the past, recounted in narrative form, and historiography, which is the discourse upon historical data, organized and analyzed along certain principles" (2001, 101). She adds that `the term historiology refers to the methodology of writing history, but that this is if often labelled also as historiography, which is the reason why this has a double meaning. A similar position is adopted by Lambert, who states that `we have to distinguish between the object of study and the discourse on the object of study, although such a discourse can also be itself part of the investigation¿ (1993, 4). Pym, for his part, considers that there is no difference between both subjects: `translation history ("historiography" is a less pretty term for the same thing) is a set of discourses predicating the changes that have occurred or have actively been prevented in the field of "translation" (1998, 5). Similarly, Gürçaglar makes no difference between both concepts, understanding `translation history' as the methodological and epistemological reflections on the writing of history, that is, `the Introduction and definitions Antoine Berman (1984, 12) stated, in a much-cited phrase, that the constitution of a history of translation is the first task of a modern theory of translation. Evaluation of tumor mutational burden in follicular lymphoma

    No full text
Follicular lymphoma (FL) is the most common subtype of indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Although it is considered an incurable disease, it generally has a good prognosis. However, a subset of patients experiences more aggressive clinical course, and there is currently no prognostic index that accurately identifies these patients. Tumor mutational burden(TMB) has been proposed as a predictive biomarker for response to immune checkpoint inhibitors, but its role as a prognostic biomarker in FL and other cancers has not been extensively explored. The primary objective of this thesis is to evaluate the prognostic role of TMB in FL patients and its association with genomic alterations. To achieve this, we employed next-generation sequencing techniques using a gene panel covering 1.2 exonic megabases. Our findings indicate that a higher TMB is associated with a more favorable prognosis independently of other prognosis factors. Furthermore, higher TMB is associated with the t(14;18)translocation and mutations in genes involved in cellular migration and them TOR signaling pathway. Moreover, the clinical characteristics were similar between the groups. Finally, we examined the differences between patients with FL and those with transformed FL, observing similar TMB values in both groups. However, the association between high TMB and prognosis was not observed in the transformed FL group.Programa de Doctorat en Biomedicin

    Uniform temporal trees

    No full text
Motivated by the study of random temporal networks, we introduce a class of random trees that we coin uniform temporal trees. A uniform temporal tree is obtained by assigning independent uniform [0, 1] labels to the edges of a rooted complete infinite -ary tree and keeping only those vertices for which the path from the root to the vertex has decreasing edge labels. The -percolated uniform temporal tree, denoted by T ,, is obtained similarly, with the additional constraint that the edge labels on each path are all below . We study several properties of these trees, including their size, height, the typical depth of a vertex, and degree distribution. In particular, we establish a limit law for the size of T , which states that ∣T ,∣ np converges in distribution to an Exponential(1) random variable as → ∞. For the height ,, we prove that , np converges to in probability. Uniform temporal trees show some remarkable similarities to uniform random recursive trees. This work was supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (RGPIN-2024-04164); Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (PID2022-138268NB-I00); NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship; Fundación BBVA a Proyectos de Investigación Científica 2021

Effectiveness of the Triple P Procedure and its modifications on reducing the blood loss and peripartum hysterectomy rates in women with Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS): a review of published literature

    No full text
Background: Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) disorders has been reported to be associated with a maternal mortality rate of 7-10%, worldwide, and many women who survive, experience life changing morbidity. Triple P procedure (p- perioperative placental localization and incision on the myometrium above the upper border of the placenta; p- pelvic devascularisation; and p-placental non-separation and myometrial excision) was developed in 2010 as a novel conservative alternative to peripartum hysterectomy to avoid severe maternal morbidity and mortality). There have been several modifications to the original Triple P Procedure to achieve "pelvic devascularisation" based on locally available resources. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the Triple P Procedure and its modifications on reducing the blood loss and the rate of peripartum hysterectomy in women who were diagnosed to have placental accreta spectrum (PAS) by reviewing the published literature. Materials and methods: PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar Search searches were made using "Triple P" and "Modified Triple P." Papers selected were assessed independently for content, data extraction and analysis. The following parameters were included for the analysis: total number of cases, total EBL, need for blood transfusion, injury to adjacent pelvic organs (urinary bladder, ureter, bowel), need for embolization, admission to intensive care unit (ICU), post-operative in-patient hospital stay, peripartum Hysterectomy, for "Modified" Triple P Procedure, the nature of the modification.Study characteristics were extracted using a predesigned data extraction table. Results: The literature search identified 6 articles on the Triple P Procedure and 8 articles on the modified Triple P Procedure which were deemed eligible for analysis and comparison, based on the inclusion criteria. 75 patients had the Triple P procedure with an estimated mean blood loss of 2.31 L and a blood transfusion rate of 52%. The bladder injury rate was only 1.3%. None of the patients had a peripartum hysterectomy. Overall, 654 patients had the Modified Triple P procedure with an estimated mean blood loss of 1.4 L and a blood transfusion rate of 64.5%. The mean hospital stay was 3.86 days and 6.1% had a peripartum hysterectomy. Conclusion: The Triple P Procedure and the Modified Triple P procedure are associated with lower estimated blood loss as compared to the reported rates with a peripartum hysterectomy. The Triple P Procedure was associated with lower rates of inadvertent injuries to the bladder and ureters as compared to the Modified Triple P Procedure and reported rates with peripartum hysterectomy. Both the Triple P and the Modified Triple P Procedure are associated with very low rates of peripartum hysterectomy (0% and 6.1%, respectively)

Haunted salt: the Saltpan of La Tortuga Island, slavery, and Atlantic sugar economies, 1638-1781

    No full text
The saltpan of the uninhabited and largely forgotten Venezuelan island of La Tortuga was vital to the functioning of the British and French Atlantic sugar economies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In this chapter I retrace the itineraries of La Tortuga's free and low-grade salt as it travelled in the holds of small Anglo-American ships returning to New England, where it was utilized in curing the low-grade category of refuse fish. By reconstructing the commodity circuit of this salt, I then reveal how it returned to the Caribbean aboard the salt ships, preserving the fragile flesh of refuse fish that was sold as provender for the enslaved toiling on sugar plantations in the British and French islands. To this day saltfish has remained deeply embedded in the culinary practices of the region's inhabitants. Finally, I explore how more than a hundred individually sized punch bowls found in the excavations of the Anglo-American campsites are potent exemplars of micro-globalities, where the regional and global came to be nested in the local, specifically in the form of rum punch, the ingredients of which included sugar and rum-products of West Indian plantations. What results is a peculiar story of a haunted salt harvested on a desolate island, trailing spectral entanglements with slavery across the Caribbean
