Perceptions of degrees in tourism and professional goals: a comparative analysis between the University of Girona (Spain) and the State University of Milagro (Ecuador)

    No full text
Several universities worldwide offer degrees in tourism studies to meet the demand of students interested in pursuing tourism as a career. Researching whether this academic offer meets the expectations of future tourism professionals is important, as this is pivotal to the students’ decision on whether to enter this sector, or not. Taking a quantitative approach, the aim of this paper is to examine and compare the perceptions of tourism degree studies, and their goals to pursue further education and a career in the tourism sector. Two universities in two countries are analyzed: the University of Girona (Spain) and the State University of Milagro (Ecuador). The questionnaire design includes questions related to professional perceptions and students\u27 short- and long-term career goals. An Exploratory Factor Analysis of tourism career perceptions has been carried out in both universities to determine the underlying factors determining the students’ career perceptions. The findings show differences in perceptions of tourism studies between the two countries. In Ecuador, the studies are perceived as a single factor: “General perception about the career”, while in Spain they are perceived as two factors: “Perception of social pressure”, based on what society expects, and “Personal perception”, based on individual achievements or goals related to a tourism degree and the profession. These findings will enable higher education curriculum developers, tourism employers and the government to work together to offer programs that reduce the gap between expectations and the reality of the labor market by examining the personal, professional, and social perceptions of future tourism professionals

In recent times there has been an increase in the supply of different types of accommodation, including tourist housing. The aim of this study is to determine the factors that measure the impact produced by tourist dwellings in Spain, with special emphasis on the territorial location of tourist destinations, so an approximation is made at the provincial scale. Non-parametric statistical techniques and multivariate analysis are applied for the study. The results show that this type of accommodation in Spain is not overdimensioned, that it is efficient and that it has a positive effect on different aspects, especially on the labor market associated with the sector. However, this impact is relative and heterogeneous, as it does not benefit the whole of Spain in the same way. This diversity shows the importance of the spatial location of tourist destinations as a determining factor of its impact, with the provinces located in the Spanish archipelagos and coastal areas being the most favored economically and in terms of employment by tourist housing.

Tourism seasonality and public policy: an exploratory analysis - lessons from Mallorca, Spain

    No full text
The tourism academic literature shows the contrast between efforts aimed at curbing seasonality and the poor performance of the policies. Is there a place for the public sector in managing tourism seasonality? This question is examined in our paper using first principles of public economics. This paper contributes to tourism seasonality theory with a conceptual framework of general applicability for evaluating policies. This framework is much needed, given the scarcity of rigorous policy evaluations in this area. The theoretical analysis argues that market failures, such as the existence of public goods, externalities, coordination problems, and imperfect information, may impede the implementation of product and market diversification needed by tourism firms to curb seasonality. We also consider the hypothesis that seasonal price differentiation may be limited by the intra-seasonal rigidities of wages, taxes and public prices. Our data, using Gini coefficients, reveal little to no progress in curbing seasonality in Mallorca. The empirical results are based on the importance-performance analysis (IPA) methodology applied through a questionnaire to Majorcan hotel managers. We identify eight sets of public policies relevant to tourism seasonality. Our empirical results suggest that public managers should increase efforts to coordinate the different segments of Mallorca’s tourism supply during the off-peak season, boost air connections and facilitate differential pricing through lower taxes and public prices. The results also indicate that public managers should continue deregulation efforts to allow flexibility in order to adapt the tourism product to suit the characteristics of off-peak seasonal demand. Also, the public sector may consider reducing its involvement in policies for diversifying and promoting the off-peak tourism product. Finally, responses from Majorcan hotel managers suggest that the public sector should play little or no role in gathering and disseminating information about products and markets in the off-peak season

Introduction. In 2023, amidst a period of profound relativisation and denial of Fundamental Rights, Chile commemorated 50 years of the civil-military dictatorship. During the October 2019 revolt, serious human rights violations were committed by agents of the State, most of which have not reached judicial closure. In this context, the latest survey of the National Institute of Human Rights indicates that the population negatively perceives the country’s guarantee and protection of human rights. This factor is relevant considering three decades of transitional justice and the human rights commitments undertaken by the Chilean State. Human Rights Education aimed at creating a culture of respect for human rights and generating an education of freedom that combats all forms of discrimination and violence constitutes a significant training component of Social Work, a human rights profession. The literature signals, nevertheless, various difficulties in truly incorporating this approach in educational trajectories and projects. Methodology. An exploratory and quantitative study was conducted of the human rights perceptions of students enrolled in a state university Social Work degree in the north of Chile. An online questionnaire was administered to a simple random sample (154 cases) with a 95% margin of error. The instrument was structured around open-ended, multiple-choice, and ordinal questions which were subsequently processed and analysed. Results. A positive perception of human rights was found. They were understood to be a tool enabling the protection of people\u27s dignity, and were associated with concepts such as equality, dignity, respect, and freedom. However, a negative perception of the guarantee of human rights was also encountered, a finding which is consistent with national results and other perception surveys implemented in Argentina. In relation to human rights training, the participants positively valued the knowledge provided in the Social Work degree. They requested, however, more elements to identify recourse instances when observing violations and more training in specific enforceability tools. Discussion. According to the evidence in the literature, the results coincide with other studies that have shown favourable human rights perceptions, while identifying a series of violations, especially in Economic and Social Rights. Thus, there is a clear need to link human rights training with daily Social Work practice through active methodologies. This would allow ensuring the training of critical agents capable of assuming the defence and promotion of human rights. Conclusions. It is necessary to advance in the strengthening of Human Rights Education in Social Work from a critical perspective. Considering the country’s context of neoliberal rationality, concrete tools must be provided allowing to fully exercise and guarantee the necessary rights.

From On-Air Rebelliousness to the Cult of Positivity: Mediated Identities and Technological Change in Pump Up the Volume (1990) and Eighth Grade (2018)

    No full text
Thanks to technological change, the negotiation of adolescent identities largely takes part in virtual spaces. Mostly lacking parental supervision, virtual spaces become one of the few arenas where teenagers have unrestricted freedom to perform and construct their identities. Teenage films have depicted the possibilities and dangers of adolescents using technology since personal computers became commonplace in the 1980s. This paper analyses the representation of the relationship between networked virtual spaces and teenage identities in Pump Up the Volume (Allan Moyle, 1990) and Eighth Grade (Bo Burnham, 2018), two teen films in which the use of technology and virtual spaces as a means for self-expression becomes key in the protagonists’ process of identity formation. The generational distance between the two films provides insight not only into technological change, but also into shifting social expectations. While Eighth Grade shows a world in which social media use is commonplace and having a social media profile is expected, Pump Up the Volume depicts a pre-internet world in which social media—in this case amateur radio—is produced and consumed by those whose voices and views are not typically represented or heard. As a consequence, although both films reflect on the relationship between adolescent identities and their performances on social media, they place an emphasis on different aspects of social networks that are specific to each film’s socio-historical context. While Pump Up the Volume presents social media as a tool for rebellion, connection and potential systemic change, Eighth Grade reflects an individualised world in which conformity to neoliberal values—and, more specifically, neoliberal girlhood—replaces rebellion

    No full text
16th-century texts include a large number of female-voiced Catalan compositions written in a tone that imitates folk style, popular verse. The study of these poetic texts allows us to understand the development of the lyrical code of women’s song in early Catalan literature. Despite its richness and variety, the phenomenon has hardly received attention from specialized critics. For this reason, this article compiles Catalan women’s songs from cancioneros, ensaladas, broadsheets, and other manuscript and printed sources of the 16th century, examines their main thematic and formal features, and identifies their antecedents in the medieval lyric tradition of the Crown of Aragon (13th-15th centuries), of which it is its natural continuation. Likewise, this article explores the literary influences on the Catalan corpus (mainly Spanish and French), which places Catalan literature in its Romance-language context, and specifies the poetic models it assumed during the Renaissance. Finally, this article focuses on the social spaces of production, interpretation, and dissemination of the identified poems. This tells us that, at least in the 16th century, Catalan women’s songs were a learned, literary product that circulated in aristocratic contexts for mostly recreational purposes. These popularizing texts, therefore, do not reflect authentic Catalan poetic folklore, but rather demonstrate a learned fashion favoured by Renaissance sensibility, which created for this «popular style» a new aesthetic category within lyric poetry.

    No full text
This article leverages Jubilee’s viral YouTube video featuring conservative and liberal trans individuals debating as a means to promote the integration of e-materials in discussions about the entitlements and human worth of trans communities, with special attention to vital rights like toilet access and including nonbinary persons. Using perspectives informed by hauntology and monster theory, I contend that educators can benefit from these conceptual frameworks. Hauntology is a philosophical concept introduced by Jacques Derrida, focusing on the idea of the persistence of the past within the present and the impact of forgotten or repressed histories on contemporary culture. It explores how the «spectres» of past events and ideologies continue to influence and haunt current social and cultural contexts. Monster theory, on the other hand, is a framework developed by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen that examines how monsters in literature and folklore serve as symbols for societal anxieties and cultural conflicts. It interprets monsters as embodiments of societal fears, otherness, and transgressions, bringing to light key elements of cultural norms and human psychology. Both present viewpoints on looking into how the past and cultural anxieties shape our present realities. The discussion in this paper includes pedagogical tools that address transgender experiences, such as the seven facets of Socratic seminars designed to foster conversations on cosmopolitan ideals of diversity. Additionally, the value of guiding students to consistently question «who, where, and why» is emphasised, with a focus on how a monstrous lens can contribute to the enhancement of developmental learning experiences. This article addresses both educators and enthusiasts of gender perspectives, advocating for teaching environments that enable students to explore a world beyond societal expectations. It also appeals to those interested in hauntology and monstrous lens theory, encouraging the integration of these theories to advance educational development.

    No full text
Sexual violence is a form of structural violence that has a profound impact on our communities. Although it is increasingly codified and sanctioned, there are still stereotypes and prejudices that shape this violence and influence its treatment in the courts. This paper seeks to initiate a debate on the need to integrate a gender perspective into the law, particularly in criminal proceedings related to sexual violence. It examines how the use of legal principles and presumptions can still give rise to prejudices about the sexuality of women and girls and highlights the importance of identifying and neutralising these biases in order to achieve equitable justice. To achieve this goal, existing protocols in Latin America that challenge the neutrality of legal norms and promote the application of a gender perspective in the evaluation of evidence will be used. These protocols will be used to analyse different judicial decisions in order to identify and assess gender, race and social class biases and how they affect the evaluation of facts. This analysis will provide insight into how bias can influence the judicial process and how a gender perspective can help to mitigate these effects. The aim of this article is to take a critical look at how biases influence criminal justice and to propose strategies for a fairer and more just assessment of sexual violence cases. This reflection is crucial in order to move towards a more inclusive justice system that is sensitive to the realities of victims.

    No full text
Over the years, scientific evidence has revealed the extraordinary relationship between masculinities and education, as educational institutions have played a crucial role in the construction and transmission of gender roles. Throughout the history of Spanish education, the educational space has become a privileged place for promoting hegemonic masculinity, characterised by competitiveness, discipline, emotional control and authority, under the umbrella of the patriarchal values of the time. The aim of the article presented in the following lines is to carry out a systematised literature review of the scientific production published in the field of the study of masculinities and the history of education in Spain. Using a qualitative approach based on the documentary analysis method, we explore the historical periods on which the published literature is based, the themes and the sources of study. In this way, it can be seen that this line of research, in the Spanish context, has three outstanding characteristics: it focuses on the contemporary period, it is based on the variables of men/women and hegemonic/alternative masculinity and it is constructed on the basis of written and, to a lesser extent, oral sources. The research concludes that the history of education in Spain has dealt with masculinity from the perspective of feminism and women’s education, often as a result of a comparative or contrasting analysis. At the same time, less developed lines of research have been detected, focusing on the colonial perspective, the influence of feminism in the rethinking of masculinity or the role of the education system in questioning it. Besides, there are important knowledge gaps in relation to the experiences of men belonging to non-normative groups, sexist violence and the historicization of male sexual identity, especially in periods prior to the 20th century.
